Macbook Pro  15' (MacBookPro3,1 2007) Issues

The MBP ran rock solid and super silent on 10.6.8 on a  new Battery (bought a month before Lion rollout) averaging on 4 hours of working on one charge, but after the upgrade to 10.7 the battery wouldn't last more then 2 hours, since the 10.7.2 upgrade I barely get above 1 hour of usage and changing the battery from status Normal to Service the battery  plus the MBP's vents are running like crazy most of the time - making my MBP the laudest machine wherever I go, also the CPU temp is on 97-100 degree Celsius most of the time. I believe there's something really wrong with the Lion's underpinning responsible for battery and CPU management. Do You also have any similar problems with older MBP after upgrading to Lion?

Bartaloni,
a MacBookPro3,1 can run Mavericks if it meets all of Mavericks’ system requirements. Note that you’ll need to upgrade to Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.something) first, and then run Software Update to get to 10.6.8, before being able to upgrade to Mavericks.

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine.  I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one?  Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well?  It is not saved in the cloud.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

I am using an early 2008 MacBook Pro and am having issues with it deleting text on its own (in word, emails, etc.). As I am typing it all of a sudden starts deleting and I can't stop it. This happened once before and it was due to a buldging battery pressing on the track pad. I checked the battery and it appears to be fine. What can I do?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display Issues with Wifi with Bluetooth.

I have a Macbook Pro with Retina Display, 2.3 Ghz model.  I've noticed that while on wifi, when I use a bluetooth mouse or even turn on bluetooth on my computer, the wifi performance severely decreases for a short period of time.  While using a bluetooth mouse the wifi intermittently fails and I need to shut off wifi and turn it back on to correct the issue.
Using the ping utility on terminal I have confirmed this in that when bluetooth is turned on, a large number of packets are lost for about ten seconds.
Has anyone else been experiencing this problem and is this an issue I can correct myself or should I contact Apple?
    Thanks

I have the same issue with my macbook pro with retina display. I have 2 macbook pros. I never would of thought that a bluetooth signal was interfering with both of them. I had a gateway wireless router that only had 2.4 Ghz 802.11 b/g, which is the same frequency of bluetooth. I know that bluetooth bounces from channel to channel, whereas wifi sticks to one constant channel (normally). I have reinstalled my mac twice, thinking that somehow my drivers were corrupted. This was false becuase everytime I reinstalled it did the same thing, Act fine for 5-10 minutes and randomly the internet connection would freeze up all together for 10-20 seconds. I have also tried contacting apple multiple times and they tried to do a smc and pram reset. They also tried to get rid of my chaches in my computer. It all seemed to be fine, and then when I got off the phone it would act us once more.
I have read numerous articles to try and fix the situation; one of them was to try change the location of the network and change the MTU size. No help. I called At&T (my internet provider) and got a new router and that did work for a while. But eventually acted up again. The router was still 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g. I read this article and found out that my Magic Mouse might be causing the issue. Turns out to be true. Everytime I would browser the internet or browse the itunes store and it would freeze, i would immediatly turn the bluetooth off and what do you know, it works!!! This is a huge dissapointment in apple however. It seems to be only a macbook pro w/ retina display issue. My other macbook pro only acts up when i'm using my newer one (something is wrong with the bluetooth and wifi in the retina for the 2.4 ghz frequencies.
I just got a Airport express, and have not experienced this issue what so ever. This is due to the fact that it is a dual band wireless router. It supports 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz both at 802.11 a/b/g/n which is a major improvement compared to what I had. I use the 5Ghz frequency and have no issues still.
This is still an issue however because if I want to go out and use anothers persons wifi, I can't control their frequency. So I will still have this issue.

  • MacBook Pro 3,1   2007 disk not recognized at install

    Hi,
I installed SnowLeopard on two of my Macs without problem. Trying the same on my MacBook Pro 3,1 2007 with a 320GB drive gives me a headache. I erased the volume completely, started up from the install-DVD and clicked install. However, the installer did not recognize the volume and did not list it in the selection window. Even running DiskWarrior on the empty volume did not change things. Several attempts to no avail.
The earlier system was 10.5.8 with the latest updates.
I also notice that the Installer DVD takes a long time to start up and to initialize the installer.
Does anybody have an idea why the volume would not be recognized?

Hi donv: I repartitioned, rechecked with DU, even ran a hardware test, still not recognizing the HDD from within the (family pack) installer.
Restoring 10.5.8 works and the machine boots just fine. I am at a loss.
The disk is a WDC WD3200BEVT-22ZCT0. Could the disk be a problem? A year ago a certified technician replaced the original disk with this one.

How can i install the mac os x 10.4.11 or 10.4.9 again without a cd ? with an external hard drive maybe but how ? Please help !

  • Apple Logo Stuck While Booting (Macbook Pro 15 (Late 2007)

As I have installed Mac OS X 10.7.2, I tried to put it on my computer on the Macbook Pro 15 (Late 2007) I tried everything to make it work. It just still shows with a Apple logo with the "beach circle" on it. Once i turn it on, I just know that the software went in but It does not show the screen about it.
    Please help if you can.
    I want this to work

    oo close. but no.
Once you download the recovery disk assistant, doublt click it and it'll open up an installer. This installer will ask you where you want to install the RDAssistant. Make sure you choose your USB drive not your hard drive. Name the usb drive before doing this if it is unclear which is which.
    something like "MyUSBdrive" or "LionRecoveryA".
And then proceed to install it on the usb.
Once you have done that you will plug it into the computer that you can't get into and run the usb through that. To get to the usb recovery partition, you'll have to hold option down to get to the drive.
if this doesn't work, go to an apple specialist (apple store) who can assist you directly.

The Mid-2007 model didn't come out until June 2007, so you must have bought an earlier model. It won't run Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.x), but it might run Lion (10.7.x) if you can get hold of a copy, depending on which earlier model it is.
Lion requires at least a Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The first MacBook Pros came out in January 2006, but they had "Core Duo" processors (no "2"). The Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros came out in October 2006. You could have bought either in March 2007.

  • Macbook Pro 3,1 Display Issue: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT or Display?

Is this an issue with the monitor or the video chip?
    2007 15" Macbook Pro 3,1 2.4Ghz

Purchased my MA896LL in Jun 07, the original video card failed in Aug 08, before Apple offered the 'xtended Nvidia warranty program' ... w/ no applecare, I told the apple store and their phone support of this known issue being reported, after alot of negotiating they repaired for free ... was satisfied with response at the time ... until almost exactly a year later in June 09 the same problem started again, distorted video etc ... went to 2 differant apple stores, they both ran the infamous Nvidia test, both said it was not the GPU ... I told them it was a matter of time until it failed completely and in Aug 09 it did ... verified failure @ apple store, computer is out for repair under the xtended warranty ... 2nd failure !!! to me its very clear this is not a issue of a bad lot of graphics cards but a design issue, and I'm confident it will fail again in another year ... to their credit Apple has been helpful but replacing the logic board is just a bandaid ... in my opinion the only proper solution is to replace failed MBP's with a new model w/o this design issue, and bill Nvidia for it ...

  • MacBook Pro 17" (Late 2007) not starting up after battery calibration (depleted)

Hi, I have spent most of today skimming through the advice given on these forums, but to no avail. I cannot power up my MBP. Since it is Sunday, I will give my best to find every piece of "soft" advice to try before giving up my daily workhorse to the official Apple Support.
    Machine specs:
    MacBook Pro 17" Hi-Res pre-unibody (2007)
Second battery - original bloated about a year ago (lasted 4 yrs! of continuous use)
    SSD primary, HDD secondary drives
    6GB om RAM
    2.4GHz C2D
    MacOS 10.6.8
Logic board replaced a few years back with faulty graphics (re-call).
    This is what happened:
I decided to recalibrate my MBP (replaced, non-original NuPower) battery over the weekend.
I'm using my laptop at home and at the office, plugged in mostly. So it was advised to perform this procedure for the sake of a healthy battery.
Dreained it to the state of sleep nd then waited for the sleep light to go off.
A couple of hours passed after that when I returned to my desk and plugged in the adapter.
The LED went on GREEN (weird, I thought, but hoped it just did not pick up the completely drained battery right away).
Let it rest with that state for several hours. LED remained GREEN at all times.
Tha laptop sat still on the desk the whole time...
    This is what I tried:
Unplugged, took battery out briefly, replugged - GREEN indicator.
Tried another adapter (60W instead of the original 85W), that adapter showed green as well.
Tried my AC adapter to charge another MacBook - charged fine, AMBER light.
    - THIS MEANS the problem is with my MBP unit (incl battery).
Unplugged, took battery out, held the power button for 5secs (SMC reset), reassembled - no improvement
Tried all key-combos, held power button for 10secs
Took the battery out and tried to bott with plugged adapter, this normally works fine, but now nothing - no sound whatsoever
    - THIS MEANS the issues is not with the battery, it is with the power management.
Sad thing is, that if it is the motherboard somehow that got damaged by itself, it means the end of this fine and capable machine. It is not worth the investment of a replacement motherboard and buying them from ebay is not a sustainable option
Tomorrow I will swap AC-adapters and batteries with an identical model of a friend. I will let you know.
I expect little you can help me with, but for future reference, the story might prove useful for similar cases. I was upset and surprised mainly because of the timing - not powering up after drained battery during calibration process.

Dreained it to the state of sleep nd then waited for the sleep light to go off.
A couple of hours passed after that when I returned to my desk and plugged in the adapter.
Did you wait 5+ hours?  Per article - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7261 "After your computer goes to sleep, turn it off or allow it to sleep for five hours or longer."

  • Brand New MacBook Pro and Display Adaptor Issue

Hello fellow Mac users, I've been a long-time Mac user and owner.
I just got a new MacBook Pro after using a 2006 model for 2 years and am having a display adapter issue that I need help and advice with:
The new MacBook Pro has the mini DVI display connector, my non-Apple external display is does not support the mini DVI, no problem there, I bought the display adaptor...
Except that it doesn't fit the adaptor that fit the 2006 MacBook Pro.
    Please See Image at Link:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/sdjOcw1jrddqtAfjAU0Trw?feat=directlink
File comment: This is the adaptor that connected my 2006 MacBook Pro to the the display. It changes the connection from the Mac's DVI to fit the VGA connection of my display. There are the four extra pins around the flat pin to the left of the connector.
Somehow the male end of the mini DVI to the full-size DVI adaptor doesn't fit the female end of the full-size DVI to VGA adaptor! Please see the images. It seems a few extra pins prevent the connection!
    Please See Image at Link:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/4bG788QVKGCOIJUkzHcjKg?feat=directlink
Comment: This is where the problems begin. The flat portion lacks the four holes needed for the DVI to VGA adaptor to connect.
Is it possible to just remove the four offending pins in the Full Size DVI to VGA Male End?
Any help or suggestions highly appreciated, because as of now, my brand new MacBook Pro is less useful than the 2006 model, which can connect to my external display.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi Rob with a Mac and welcome to the boards.
My suggestion would be that you simply take the adaptor back and get a mini-display port to VGA adaptor instead.
I ran into a similar problem myself recently when I wanted to connect my own MBP13 to an overhead projector. I had assumed that I could use the mini display to DVI adaptor that I use for the DVI capable external monitor with my new MacBook, combined with a DVI to VGA adaptor that I had for my 2007 MBP, connected to a VGA cable to do the job, but this is not possible.
MiniDisplay to VGA adaptors for the newer MBPs are readily available at Apple dealers or through the online store and not too expensive.
    Cheers
    Rod
