Macbook pro 15" retina fan frequently kick in.

HI,
My new macbook pro 5 days old has a weird problem.
1st it became really hot, like untouchable hot near the upper keyboard. and the fans didnt kick in.
So i bought a cooling pad, and now it runs cooler ( w/o switching the cooler on as the cooler has a 'hole' where the mac gets hot. :-)  )
now the fans frequently blast to 6000rpm! with no reason what so ever. so i downloaded istat. my CPU temp is around 42˚C and the ambient room temp is around 30˚C.
It happens every 15-20 mins and lasts for 15-20 sec. I have reset SMC. Still nothing
Also during this period the CPU is doing nothing. it's running at 1 ~2% user and 1~2% system.
And the GPU switches from HD4000 to GT650M. and the GT650M uses ALL the memory.
I live in India and have purchased it from a local reseller. pls advice.

If you tried the resetting of the SMC   http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
And no difference, I would make an appointment with the genius bar, for evaluation, resolve or exchange.

It is un-nerving to say the least when your fans ramp up to 6000 rpm under no load, something is not right here of course.

  • Macbook Pro 15 retina Fan unusual speed

Hi, I have just received my new macbook pro retina 15" but I have a problem with Fan Noise.
Them start randomly to run at full speed (5900 rpm) even if i am just web surfing on facebook, not even using flash adobe.
I checked activity monitor and the cpu is never over 20% of max use.
I did SMC reset, new account, Format and reinstall, PRam reset, None of those makes this strange behavior stop.
the fan start running randomly at max speed for 10-15 seconds then back to 2000 rpm, then them start again still randomly.
I really don't know what to do.
    Thanks for your help.

You say you have done the SMC reset.  At this point there is nothing else that I can come up with that would actually solve the issue.  You are under warranty, use it.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Retina overheating when playing flash

I've recently purchased a new macbook pro 13" Retina but whenever I play any flash content, the cpu usage for the flash player would jump over 50% and within 5minutes, the macbook would get quite hot. I've tried safari, chrome, firefox and on windows 7 under parallels all with the same results.
My macbook would boot up at around 40C. Once I play something with flash, i.e. YouTube, it would shoot up to 85-90C before the fans start to kick in (from 2000rpm to 4500rpm). I'm measuring temperatures using Temperature Guage 4.0 and smcFanControl 2.4. I could manually adjust the RPM using smcFanControl, but I'd rather solve the problem of flash causing high cpu usage and overheating the macbook.
Is this normal or should I take it back to where I bought it from and get a replacement/repair? Only a week old as well.

Flash content will put stress on the GPU/CPU and thus raise the internal temperatures.  The temperatures you are reporting are not lethal to the MBP but may be higher than one might expect.  Not knowing exactly what you are doing I cannot say with certainty but I would at the very least have it checked at the Apple store and recreate the conditions for the technicians.  That way it can be determined if there is a malfunction or you are just stressing the MBP with your flash video selections.
    Ciao.

  • I know many have this issue but i can't find a solution to the problem. i get message saying insuffisiant disk space in the volume iPhoto library and i have plenty of space available. i have the new macbook pro with retina display.

I know many have this issue but i can't find a solution to the problem. i get message saying insuffisiant disk space in the volume iPhoto library and i have plenty of space available. i have the new macbook pro with retina display. i have never seen this message before and i have 2 other macbooks and have had many other also. i am assuming this is a problem with the new macbook retina. does anyone know the exact fix to this issue? i have seen many sugestions to try to fix this issue but none have solved the issue for anyone that i can find in the Apple Support Community. thank for looking into this in advance.
    ******A true apple fan********

Actually your suggestions are the ones that i have tried. i have seen that you have tried to help others with this issue and the only one that i could find that said they found the problem said that it was an ilife update issue and it fixed it and i have no available updates. i know it has to do with something in photo stream because it happens when i create a new library and it is loading the photos but i get the message before i reach the maximum 1000 photos. so i've tried updating, new library(first backing up photos and then deleting them from iPhoto), reinstalling OSX many times, running disc utilities. I called Apple the first day i had this issue and i was the first person to call them for support with the retina display and i actually had it escalated to a senior advisor and we thought we fixed the problem but we did not. i am pretty fluent in dealing with troubleshooting these type of issues and this is the first time i'm reaching out to the community. i figured now that the retina has been out some time now that there would be an obvious answer to this issue. thanks for the quick reply.

  • What are the Windows Experience Index numbers for Windows 7 running on a MacBook Pro 13 Retina Display?

I am curious to know what speed those running Windows 7 on a MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display are obtaining.  I am interested in purchasing a MacBook Pro 13" Retina (i7) and will be running Windows 7 frequently since some of my business software only runs under Windows.  I have heard that the best PC is a Mac.  Just wanted to confirm the Windows Experience Index values are for those MacBook Pro users are seeing when running Windows 7.  The Windows 7 Experience Index numbers include one for Processor speed, Memory (RAM) speed, Graphics speed, Gaming graphics speed, and Primary Disk speed.

Hi - I connected my superdrive but it does not seem to be working - now all I get is a black screen with the prompt - no bootable device; insert boot disk and press any key.
Any thoughts on this? I put an ISO image on my desktop and also created an image on a USB drive - however it has encryption software on it which did not get overwritten so Im not sure if this is why that won't boot.
Does anyone know if the Superdrive can't be used?

  • MacBook Pro with Retina display in game graphics and SMC

I recently bought a MacBook Pro with retina display and started playing STC2 on it. I experienced  great gameplay with maxed out graphics and 30fps, however recently the fps was down and as part of my trobleshooting I reset the SMC and that seemed to correct the issue. However the computer heats up much faster now and the fans seem to labor to keep it cool. When the fps was lower before i reset the SMC the computer did not get nearly as hot. My question is; is this the OS trying to protect the hardware from overheating or just a glitch?

Well unless you want to go through the hassle of waiting for a replacement unit you can try a few things on your own.
Make sure it is plugged in and charging (Orange LED light will indicate it is charging Green means it is fully charged)
Once it is plugged in make sure everything else is unplugged
The only thing plugged in should be the power adapter
On the left hand side of your keyboard press down and hold the Control Shift and Option Keys
While you are holding down those three keys hold down the power button as well
Hold down all 4 of these for 10 seconds
    After 10 seconds let go
    Try turning your mac on
    If this works problem fixed!
If this does not work try calling 1-800-MYAPPLE (You get 90 days of free complimentary phone support on your product)
If you purchased AppleCare you have 3 years of it and you should have this number on hand it can really help you out
I always advise friends and family to purchase applecare if they plan on having their product longer than a year
You will get 3 years of phone support as well as hardware support
That means if you have any questions or anything goes wrong just call Apple
It also means if your computer breaks it is covered! Meaning no out of pocket expenses unless it is water or accidental damage
You may really want to look into purchasing applecare

  • MacBook Pro with Retina Display Wakes Up By Itself

My MacBook Pro with Retina display wakes up by itself on battery sometime with reason "EC.PME (User)".
Any idea what is that? and what causes it?
    Regards
    Andrew

I have had my new rMBP 13" do this twice over the last 2 weeks. its only 3 weeks old. Take it out of my bag after closing the lid and putting it to sleep to find the screen blank and the fans running at full blast. only way to stop it is to hold the power key down till it re-boots. I would like to know why this is happening too.
Macbook Pro Retina, 13 inch, Early 2013 model.

  • Macbook Pro with Retina display overheating

I just bought a 13.3" Macbook pro with retina display yesterday and it's been overheating like crazy. Right now I have only Chrome open with this page and it's uncomfortable to put this computer on my lap right now. I watched youtube videos last night and I could hear the fan, when normally this machine is extremely quiet. I'm afraid that because this computer runs so hot, it's going to damage the display. Is there something defective with this machine, or are all the ones in this model the same? Should I get the regular 2012 model instead?

I bought my Macboook Pro with Retina Display laptop during Christmas, only use it about < 10 times because I have other MACs that I've gotten used to.
    OSX 10.8.2
    15" Retina display
    1.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    4GB 1333 MHz DDR
A month ago, after not using it for several weeks, I picked up the laptop to move around.  Wow - the box was hot like it just came out from the oven Literally - this macbook pro was not used at all - just laying idling, no programs used and was sitting in a dark corner in a room, not exposed to sun or any heat or warm area.  I wasn't motivated in using it since.  So, it was left laying around the house again.
Today, my son tried to use the laptop - when he touched it, he jumped 'ouch' as the laptop was hot for no reason. Again, not exposed to any warm elements or anything that is running that could have caused it to be hot.
I should have read all reviews on here - I now resented not returning this macbook pro notebook.  I don't have time to go back and forth to the Genius and sitting at the bar waiting and wasting my time for something that I just paid and expect it work properly and not wasting my time.  Please do something to help regain my confidence in Mac products.  Not happy here!  I guess I'll have to sit at the genius bar anyway.  But just want to chime in that I have the same Macbook Pro overheating problem.

  • My MacBook Pro with retina display got extremely hot while closed an in a carrying case

I have a new Macbook Pro with Retina display.  I left my house at approxomately 6 p.m and I took my macbook pro with me.  I put it in a protective Incase sleeve which I put in my messenger bag.  When I got to my final destination about 1 hour and 40 mintutes later when I went to retrieve my macbok the entire messenger bag was hot.  When I went to get the macbook out of the sleeve the actual computer was so hot I could barely touch it.  I could even smell the computer (you know that new comptuter smell) standing a few feet away from it in a cafe that his good ventilation.  When I left my house the battery was at 100% charge.  When I discovered the computer in this state I had to hold down the power button to get it to start.  When i logged in the battery was at 47%.  I discovered that I left iphoto, chrome and microsoft word open.  Should I be concerned?  The machine was so hot that I can not imagine that if this turns into a reoccuring issue that it won't damage the computer.  I wonder what would of happened had I not discovered it.

When it gets to a certain temperatue it would have gone into thermal shutdown, from your scenario it looks like your machine failed to enter sleep mode or power nap due to some applications that was holding it up.
as this machine was inside a sleeve and still running the machine couldn't dissipate the heat and ramped up the fans to attempt to cool itself hence the battery drain.

  • My macbook pro with retina display

As a person that likes apple products like me i love the macbook pro with retina display, but there is one complaint that i have that i dont know how to fix. my macbook pro with retina display is getting to a point when it starts to overheat when i play graphically intense applications from the play store or off steam which has games as well. i dont know why this is that the macbook heats up i would like to fix this problem because i dont want this thing to start burning the internals and my computer starts to break itself because of heat problems. if anyone knows how to fix this problem please tell me i would like to know.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
All PCs and Macs get hot while running heavy apps that require hardware work harder than with other tasks, so you shouldn't be worried about that.
However, if you feel that your computer doesn't turn on fans automatically when it gets hot, you may have a problem. Morever, this is a bigger problem in the MacBook Pro with Retina display, that has got less space to cool down your computer, getting higher temperatures.
If fans don't turn on, run Apple Hardware Test, holding Option (Alt) and D keys while your computer is starting. Connect the MacBook Pro to the charger, choose your language, mark the option to make extended test and start this. If at the end you see an error, copy it here and take your MacBook to an Apple Store.
If you don't get any error, you can use an application like smcFanControl to set up temperatures as you want. You shouldn't set up a speed higher than 2000 rpm if you don't want to damage your computer

  • Macbook pro with retina display , noisy when streaming

    Yesterday I bought macbook pro with retina display 2.4GHz, 8Gb RAM, 256Gb flash storage ( 2088 SG$ ) from Challenger , Singapore.
If I watch online steaming ( e.g youtube.,etc ) , my macbook pro's fan start noisy and increase body temperature because of load .
I checked in activity monitor, CPU usage increased. So How should I do now ?

I had this exact problem when watching streams on my Macbook pro retina 15". For the sake of testing, I tried opening the same stream i was testing in chrome, using 120 % of cpu, in safari, where it uses roughly 3-10 %. dont't know if this will solve your problem, but I advice trying it.

  • How do i turbo boost my 2.7 i7 macbook pro 15" retina to 3.7?

    Hello everyone...
...can someone tell me how to turbo boost my 2.7 i7 macbook pro 15" retina to 3.7?
Being quite new to laptops (my G4 lasted me 9 years!) I'm not quite sure what to do or look for.
    Any advice much appreciated!

Turbo boost isn't user controlled, it's technology that automatically (and dynamically) kicks in based on the usage of your machine. For more information:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Turbo_Boost
Or just google, 'Intel Turbo Boost' for tons of resources.
