What is an SMC reset? The gfxcardstatus worked. Partially. I now know something is either wrong with the nvidia graphic card or its software(the hd 4000 one is better from a performance test by individually testing both cards).
How does the apple exchange work? Just walk in with the Mac and they resolve/replace the Mac or what? Any ideas?
Thanks

The reset is a little tricky and might take a few tries before you do it successfully, keep eye on for the colour change on the magsafe connector

  • Macbook pro retina (Graphic Cad problem)

Hello, I've I problem with My graphic card. Before I was able to play every game decently but now after three week (I was in holiday), I can't play nicely. I think that the dedied card Nvidia GT650M don't work and it's the HD4000 who works in her place. Even when I see in the info that the GT650 is on, when I play, it's not smoothy and all are laging.
Please help me I don't no what to do

This is a known issue, do a SMC reset and it will be back to normal for a while. This only works until your macbook pro have been in sleep mode a couple of times, then you have to do it again. Call apple support and perhaps even go to an apple store, they are not recognizing this as a real issue yet, so the more that report it the better.
Seems to be related to an EFI update that came out a couple of weeks ago, but that may just be a coincidence.

  • How to upgrade my Macbook Pro's Graphic Card?

    I have a Early 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro and it's ***** when I play games.
    Here are the specs:
    - 2.8 GHz dual-core Intel Core i7
    - 6 GB RAM
    - Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    - OSX Mavericks 10.9.2
    - 750 GB HDD 1333 MHz DDR3
It lags a lot when I play such an old games such as GTA Vice City (the FPS drops a lot when my mac getting hot) or GTA San Andreas (quite stable). Both of them aren't modded and still original. Is there any way to upgrade my Macbook Pro's graphic card?

You cannot upgrade the Graphics card on a laptop because everything is built into the logic board. Unfortunately your perticular graphics chip is actually built into the CPU, and is a very low performing chip which would definately make gaming hard.
    Sorry for the bad news.

  • Macbook Pro Retina - nVidia card does not work correctly

    Hi,
having a MacBook Pro Retina. It ran fine till yeasterday when I fired up a game which was laggy and it was running fine before. It took me several hours to find where the problem is and it seems to me that the nVidia dicrete card is not working. But strangely not working. I installed gfxCardStatus to see whether the card is being switched to run the game and it actually is. But the performance is the same as running it on an internal Intel. I took another test and downloaded CINEBENCH to see the differences and sadly the results are the same if I switch to nVidia or to Intel and run the benchmark.
Obviously something is not right here. It happened over night. Before it worked corectly. I do not remember installing something that day/night that could have broken it (in case it is a SW problem). Only one thing comes to my mind - Apple Java update. But I tried to uninstall it and got the same result. I did try to restart several times. But otherwise there is no visible flaw, e.g. flickering or black screen when swithech do nVidia - nothing. gfxCardStatus shows that the system switches the card and I notice no change. Only in heavy load it is obvious that it is slow (slower than it was).
Is there a way to see if the nVidia card is working? I suspect that even if the system is trying to switch to a discreet card it still runs on the Intel in reality. Any way how to distinguish this rather than to rely on gfxCardStatus? Any log that would make this clear? Any test I can run (Apple HW test shows "no problem detected")?
    Many thanks for hints.

To show what I am talkin about I did another test. I downloaded and ran LuxMark. There it is possible to test CPU and GPU separately on a same benchmark scene. FIrst I let the system switch to nvidia and did the test:
Then I manually switched to Intel/CPU in gfxCardStatus and also selected CPU in the LuxMark and did the same test. The result is:
You see? How it is possible that in OpenCL computation CPU with internal graphic card is even faster then the descreet one? This is what I am experiencing now and cannot figure out where the problem lies.
Would the Apple HW test discover a dead nvidia card? Because nothing shows that the card is dead but as you can see it is not performing as it should.

  • Macbook pro retina graphic glitch

    Hello,
I'd like to share with you my story with the problems I've had with my macbook pro retina 15' 2012 (with both intel and nvidia graphics) and ask for some help.
First of all, back when it still had Mountain Lion as its OS I already detected some graphic glitches. When I started the mbpr, 1 out of 5 times it would load buggy. The dock would shake whenever I move the mouse over it, exposé would lag a lot and eventually scrolling in Safari was terrible, incredibly shaky. Basically every animation on the OS went laggy or just at 10 fps.
However the performance in terms of speed and results was still OK. If I played a game I would detect no error whatsoever.
So after some months of ignoring it because I had work and couldn't take the mac to the store I decided to take it. It was getting worse as it started to happen more often than usual. By then I had already upgraded to Mavericks (no clean install, just updated) and the problem still persisted.
    Visit #1:
After explaning the problem and being able to show it to the genius they took my mac. They called a couple of days after telling me it was a OS issue and they did a clean install of Mavericks.
So I took it home, reinstall everything from scratch, they told me it may be an account/user issue so I better not use time machine to recover anything.
After a month it started to happen again. I have to say that it happen after I had already installed everything quite some time before, not right after installing any particular app or while running any.
It would load buggy again 1 out of 2/3 times and it wouldn't stop until I restarted and if I was lucky enough it would load OK.
    Visit #2:
I returned to the genius and explained again the problem. They decided that it had to be some graphic issue related to the intel or nvidia systems so they replaced the logic board.
Again a couple of weeks later I detected the problem again.
    Visit #3:
Once more to the store, they were quite puzzled that even after replacing the motherboard it would still show the issue.
After doing some tests they decided to reinstall Mavericks. Once installed they found no issue so they decided it was solved.
After this I had to return once again because it turn out that they forgot to connect the keyboard backlight system and it wouldn't light.
Anyway, this time I decided to install only the absolutely necesary apps for my work. I even downloaded the newest versions of all of them (if they had newer). Most of those apps are from the Mac App Store and the ones that are not are absolutely famous and used by thounsands of people, not that I use alphas or betas of any app.
One important detail is that the problem was getting worse. Now every time I started the mac it would be buggy and it was extremely shaky, it was impossible to read while scrolling in Safari now. Sometimes when using exposé/mission control it would even show weird pixels on screen. Every time I had this problem it was worse, more shaky and more often.
    Visit #4:
Being already a VIP visitor of the genius bar I went decided to solve the problem once and for all. I told them every detail, they saw the problem and I insisted on the software I had was completely "normal". They told me they would replace the screen, the logic board again and the IO just in case.
So imagine my surprise when I receive a call from the genius who was repairing my machien saying that after reinstalling Mavericks it showed no issue! I was furious. They insisted that it was some app I had installed and that I needed to install one app at a time, wait ONE WEEK and if nothing happens install the next.
They were not kidding aparently. After complaining I had no choice but to take my mac back and....here I am.
So my question (after the diary I've written, sorry) is:
Is this really being caused by an app I have installed? Is really an app capable of crash the entire animation system and only while in the OS UI and not in games? I've never had any app running on the background besides Fantastical (from Appstore) and Dropbox (updated).
I am listing the apps I had last time I resintalled everything:
    1. 2Do (appstore)
    2. Indesign CC
    3. Appcleaner
    4. Autocad 2014
    5. World of warcraft
    6. Dropbox
    7. Evernote (appstore)
    8. Fantastical (appstore)
    9. Keynote, Pages & Numbers (appstore)
    10. Pixelmator (appstore)
    11. Sketchup 2014
    12. Skype
    13. Steam
    14. The unarchiver
    15. Transmission
    16. VLC
    17. iPhoto
So, 17 apps, which I believe are just a few. Is there any of those apps you think may cause any issue? I haven't installed anything yet. I am using my old macbook pro (which btw have every app I had in the buggy retina with no problem whatsoever) while I try to see if the problem persist while installing nothing.
I still don't believe it is a software problem. Since it appears every time sooner and with more "intensity" I suspect it might be hardware but I am no expert.
Thanks for any help or info you can share!

Go for a few day (2-3) without installing any apps. Then install AutoCAD 2014 first and run only that for another couple of days. See if the problems resurface. If not, go ahead and reinstall all software, making sure that you create a clone after everything's installed (try Carbon Copy Cloner - they have a few 30-day evaluation period, I believe).
If problems resurface, you'll know that it's hardware.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

Your machine is rather new and thus under the one year warranty.
I would highly suggest you purchase AppleCare for a additional two more years of coverage.
Have your vent fins behind the fans cleaned annually.
The MacBook Pro's are NOT 3D gaming machines, you are substantially contributing to it's early death by playing intensive 3D games on laptop machines which are not designed to handle it.
The Retina's are the worst, because it gives you 3D performance which heats the machine up, but also inhales more dust than normal non-3D gaming operations and the exhaust port vents can't be cleaned by the user. Which dust eventually blocks the cooling fins and hot air can't escape the machine properly.
The video chip gets overheated and dies prematurely depending how much 3D activity is generated.
If your a serious 3D gamer, then you really need to consider using a Windows 7 3D gaming tower instead.
You can get video card upgrades, use multiple video cards, clean the dust out and also perform video driver and other updates to improve performance.
What is up with 3D gaming on Mac's?

  • MacBook Pro Retina 13' HDMI Problem

    Hi all,
Two weeks ago I discovered a problem with the HDMI output on my external monitor (LG IPS 234) when connected to a MacBook Pro Retina 13'. The monitor wasn't able to display greyscale information. E.g. the underlying greyscales of a Google preview search suggestion when hovering a mouse over the suggestions. Also the whole monitor display looked washed out and fuzzy. I thought it would be a problem with the monitor, so I hauled it back to the store. We checked the monitor with a MBPR 15' and everything was fine (screens not in sync - important see below). I started thinking the new 13' MBPR might be the issue. But before leaving the store and blaming my MBPR 13' we checked out another 13' MBPR and (supprise!) the same effect again. To double check we tried another external monitor from Samsung (ok, I know if Samsung is not working with an Apple MBPR...). But seriously... The same effect again.
I contacted the Apple support and after discussing this with the 1st level (with little helpful tips ... SMB reset etc.) I was forwarded to the 2nd level. The guy wasn't able to help me either. He blamed my monitor and that it might need a firmware update. The problem could be linked with some incompatible HDCP. But a firmware update can only be done by the monitor vendor or a service partner and LG doesn't even indicate that this is possible at all.
Now my question is, does anybody else experience problems with external IPS displays and the MBPR 13'?
As I said, we tested it with 2 different MBPR 13' and 2 monitors from different vendors. In each combination the same problem. Always the same effect. For me this is an indication that there might be a bigger problem under the surface.
    Kird
PS: a friend with a MPBR 15' has the same effect but only when the internal and the external IPS monitor is in sync
PS: the Apple 2nd level support promised me to give me a call regarding further steps to solve the problem (with a fixed date on Monday this week) ... They never called... Poor service Apple!

    Hello Daniel,
I gave Apple a call last week and asked for a feedback on my ticket. The guy I talked to at least tried to help me with the issue. In the meantime since my last attempt to receive something from Apple nothing has happened on the issue. Surprise! So we started from 0 again... Ok... Bought in customer with a decent pain level...
I received some test tools from the guy that I ran on the MPPR creating an encrypted file (...yes I can imagine what you think and I can assure you I had similar thoughts...) and mailed this stuff back to Apple. Now that they have insight of my whole digital live (ok I distend it a bit, but in reply to my question what's all included in this file the guy mentioned something like "don't worry only technical stuff..." Ah yea... That's why it is encrypted... You might find an info about a malfunction in the HDMI inside... very confident... Ok... What you all do for a chance of solving an HDMI problem).
So the current status is: Apple engineers are spending nights in the office to dig into whatever this tools squeezed out of my innocent MacBook. You see I have reached a state where I am slowly drifting into sarcasm ;-)
The guy mentioned there might ! be a patch coming with the next release if Apple finds the issue important enough ! and ! enough other customers have the problem as well. And on this I am not kidding. That's what he said.
Hmm... Will 3 customers be enough? I doubt it... We'll find out with the next release. Maybe we can increase the complains from release to release and empirically estimate when Apple starts taking customers seriously.
My personal guess is that they will dismount the HDMI port and send us an aluminum plug that fits perfectly in the hole. I have a flashback... There was once an issue with an antenna and they offered a piece of plastic to...
I am getting carried away so I better stop now :-) and return to my wine
Let's stay in touch if you find out something on the GB

  • Macbook Pro Retina 2014 HDMI problems

    Hi,
I'm new to the Mac world, so please forgive me if I'm overlooking the obvious.  I'm trying to connect my new 2014 Macbook Pro Retina to my VGA monitor via a HDMI adaptor.  I've used this adaptor without problems on my Lenovo laptop running Ubuntu.  However, when I connect it to the Mac, the Macbook display flashes, sometimes I see the display preferences and it correctly identifies the monitor, an old Acer wide-screen, flash up and it flicks between various resolutions and preference options; other times it just flashes and then goes blank (the only way I know to get back from the blank screen is to turn it off and on again).  Other times it just flashes and then does nothing, certainly in display preferences I don't see the other monitor and the other monitor is blank.
I know the cable and monitor work, I can understand their being a resolution problem, the monitor is way less capable than the retina screen.  So, is there any way to tell the Mac to use extended mode instead of mirror mode from the start?
Can I basically set-up the monitor and then plug it in, so it doesn't have to try and auto detect everything and have a heart attack?
Also, it seems like all the failed attempts have stopped the Mac even trying to figure out what to do.  I have deleted the plist files, which I assume are the configuration files so it will try and figure out what to do again, but it just seems to have now succumbed to the fact it doesn't want to work with it.
    Any suggestions, very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately the monitor is not available to be selected under Display > Colour.  When I have the display properties open, it does flash up a new window with the correct monitor and various resolution settings, but it is not possible to select one or do anything as the display keeps flashing and the cursor keeps jumping to the top left of the screen, then everything goes blank.
The HDMI to VGA adaptor that I use is a CAMAC (not the best in the world I'm sure but has worked solidly with my Lenovo laptop and Unbuntu).
The monitor I'm trying to connect to is a Acer AL1916W (again not a great monitor but has worked flawlessly with every over computer connected to it including the Lenovo with the HDMI adaptor).
The Mac is defiantly recognising the monitor, it just can't seem to decide what to do with it, flashing up display property windows and swapping between settings before giving up and everything goes blank.
Any other suggestions very much appreciated.

  • Macbook pro retina ghost image problem

I have heard about the burn-in problem on macbook pro retina display especially on LG screen. After I got my macbook retina for 3 months, the ghost image problem become really really unacceptable. After 4~5mins, the image on screen will burn in obviously for quite a long time. IT IS VERY OBVIOUS!! So I drop by apple store and find a genius, he did a persistence test on my macbook. The test is under a very low brightness, and I can not even know how he was operating. After 6 minutes, he said there is no burn-in problem. He explained that, if my macbook pass the test, it means my screen is within inspection. But I can tell if this screen is good, APPLE you should take a look at your inspection and change it RIGHT NOW. Everyone of my friend who have seen the problem on my screen says it is unacceptabe, how can it be within inspection? If anyone need a photo of that, i will provide.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Wireless Connection problem

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro Retina (late 2013) w AC wireless capability, and I have not been able to connect to my wireless network at work. Other computers, including my previous MacBook Pro (mid 2008) and my iPad 3 are able to connect to the work network without problems and I have no problems connecting my new MBP to my home or other networks. I have Windows 8 on a Boot Camp partition, and when my MBP is booted under windows, it still does not connect. My MBP is running OS X 10.9.4. My work wireless network uses a Linksys Wireless G Access Point model WAP54G v.2. Rebooting the router does not help. When my MBP tries to connect to the work wireless network, the status in Network Preferences says "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.216.147 and will not be able to connect to the Internet."  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
For troubleshooting a self-assigned IP address, I would suggest reading over and using the following article as a reference and resource.

  • NEW MacBook Pro Retina cracking sound problem

I recently bought a MacBook Pro Retina after using a MacBook Pro for a year.  From Day One my MacBook Pro Retina makes a cracking sound from the body on the right side. not acceptable from such a expensive machine. Apple would not replace it! Now I don't know what to expect, but I never expected this. Laptops worth 400bucks are not this cracky. After browsing through i see im not the only one with this problem. The local apple service center said they have checked it everything is fine and it is not damaged, it was a manufacturers defect. Why should I be the victim here?

Resetting the NVRAM/PRAM didn't work. The crackling sound is especially bad around the 4:00 mark in the following Killzone Shadow Fall preview:
    http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/20/watch-the-ps4s-killzone-shadow-fall-shared-di rect-from-the-con/
Several songs in the iTunes store, when previewing, also have the same crackling issue.
I'm just glad it's not crackling for every single video or song, at the very least.

I've got a MacBook Pro 13" Late 2012 Non-Retina 2.9GHz intel core i7 model. Is there any way for me to install a graphics card in it? Upto 1 GB at least? If not, what is the maximum memory I can install? And which company's graphics card should I buy? I don't have a budget as my father won't buy me a new Macbook Pro, but he doesn't care what the graphics card costs. • Macbook Pro (aluminum) graphic card issue?

Hey guys, sorry if this has been covered but I can't seem to find an answer to my specific question.  I have an older macbook pro, 17" running os x 10.6.8 (I believe.)  It's one of the first intel versions with the square aluminum case.  I did upgrade the RAM, which I've seen can cause some problems, but I don't think that's what's causing mine.  It's been over a year since I installed the RAM and have only had a few messages about unstable RAM.  I just restart and it goes away.
Anyway, was watching Netflix and paused it, when I started it again the video froze in weird lines.  I restarted, everything was fine.  Played the video again, this time it didn't even start, just straight to glitchy weird frozen video lines.  Restarted again, apple splash screen and processing wheel come up like normal but now it just boots to white/grey screen.
I did the PRAM reset (or whatever it's called) and it didn't work.  I also ran both Apple Hardware Tests (the short one and the long one) both came up empty.  The computer WILL boot in safe mode.  So I guess my question is, is this a graphic card thing or a third party thing?  Any advice on how to go about "updating or uninstalling third party software?"  Which is, I'm pretty sure, what I'm supposed to do.  But with a five + year old computer, that's a very daunting task.

It's a logic board failure.  Thanks for all your help.  I'm awarding myself 10 of your nerd points for solving my own problem.
