MacBook Pro 15 Retina Install from TM question
I've been reading of display problems when waking up from sleep. I have yet to install anything on the new machine. I just picked up the 2.3Ghz today from Apple. My question is it ok to install from a 2011 (Spring) Macbook pro time machine backup? Or would it be better if I install applications from scratch and just reinstall the documents from the TM backup.

I cannot open my older version of Preview and do not appear to have a newer version which i thought would be on the Snow Leopard dvd. It is always installed with whatever new version of OS X is installed or appropriate updates. Since you plan to go forward your choice depends on your model. I would urge you to perform a clean install instead of continuing the upgrade path which may interject incompatibilities.
Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Yosemite, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)

Before attempting a clean install you want to first download the appropriate installer application from the App Store. It will download into your Applications folder. You need to make a copy of it in your Downloads folder so you can make a bootable USB flash drive:
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
Use DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.

MacBook Pro 10.6 install from 10.8 iMac?
I have a MacBook Pro that will not run Mountain Lion. Last Mac OS update it will run is 10.6.8 and wouldn't you know it, the DVD drive no longer works. I'd like to do a clean install of 10.6 on the MacBook Pro but when it's put into target mode on my new iMac OS 10.8.2 the 10.6 installer disk will not run. App icon shows the universal NO symbol. Is there a way to run the 10.6 installer disk to the MacBook Pro in target mode?
That will only work if the computer with 10.8.2 can boot from a Snow Leopard DVD. That would require an iMac for 2010 or earlier.
Go buy an external optical drive or clone your Snow Leopard DVD to a USB flash drive. You can do that on your iMac. -

Is been awhile since I have order the macbook pro with retina display from singapore apple online store and there has been no update recently and no indication that when I will received my MBP.... Can someone tell me when the stock will arrived to Singapore?

Installing Windows XP on a new MacBook Pro with Retina Display.
I just purchased a new MacBook Pro with Retina display and need to install Windows XP on it so that I may run 3 Windows programs. I have watched a few videos on the internet on how to do this through Boot Camp Assistant, and it says at one point to use the driver CD from Mac to install the drivers. I did not get any CD's with my new MacBook Pro. I also saw on some of these boards that said Boot Camp does not support Windows XP. The people at the Apple store said it can run Windows XP, so I have ordered an original version.
Question 1. Does my MacBook Pro with Retina Display running OS X version 10.8.3 able to run Windows XP?
Question 2. How do I install the drivers?Would this work? And also, what is the VM I need? Where do I get it?

How to Clone Hard Drive from Macbook Pro to Macbook Pro with Retina
Hey everyone! I had a question about cloning my laptop's hard drive. I was considering buying a MBP with Retina, but was wondering how I would accomplish copying over my current hard drive to the retina, as I know you can't take out the retina's hard drive, and it is flash. Any suggestions?
Connect the two with a Firewire cable if they both have Firewire ports (or use Thunderbolt if the both have Thunderbolt ports.) Boot the new computer into Target Disk Mode and the old computer normally. The new computer's disk drive should appear on the Desktop of the old computer.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination
entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new computer's drive Source means the old computer's drive.
Be sure the old computer is running a version of Mountain Lion that is later than the version installed on the new computer. After cloning you will probably need to run the new 10.8.2 updater for the new computer. I have the latest 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display. I just recently installed Windows 7 through Bootcamp assistant but when I am in Windows the internet doesn't work. How can I fix this??
I found where to download it in bootcamp, I just can't find my usb drive I will need to buy a new one and then give it a shot. I am sure I will be back to ask more questions... thanks for your help.

How do I install iWork disk on MacBook Pro with Retina Display?
I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro with Retina Display and would like to install iWork on it. I do not have the device needed to use disks on this laptop as it doesn't have an optical drive. Is there any way I could download some sort of software and use a key to identify my disk? Or something along those lines because I'm sure apple would have thought that this problem would occur.
ThanksThat's why Apple no longer sells disks. All its software is now available on the App Store. So you can either purchase/download the iWork components from there, or, if you have access to another Mac with an optical drive, share the DVD from that across the network (System Preferences - Sharing - turn CD/DVD sharing on) and install that way.

Installing windows 7 on a macbook pro with retina display

I just purchased a new macbook pro with retina display and I want to install a copy of windows 7 on this machine. I've gone through numersous postings online about the proper way to do this - and I had a few questions as it is a little confusing.
What I have:
15" macbookpro with retina display
External superdrive
Physical copy of windows 7 64 bit
a burned image of the windows 7 disk (as a .CDR file)
Several postings have indicated that I need a flash drive; is this the case if I have the actual disk and the superdrive I can use for reading it?
If not and I do in fact need a flash drive - I have an 8gb with encryption software on it - if I need to make an autoboot for the windows .cdr is there a special way to do this or will the .cdr image work as it is?
I appreciate any help provided.

LennyHi - I connected my superdrive but it does not seem to be working - now all I get is a black screen with the prompt - no bootable device; insert boot disk and press any key.
Any thoughts on this? I put an ISO image on my desktop and also created an image on a USB drive - however it has encryption software on it which did not get overwritten so Im not sure if this is why that won't boot.
Does anyone know if the Superdrive can't be used?
My macbook is 3 weeks old - it is all the latest and greatest stuff... -

Possible to install a new SSD to a 13-inch macbook pro with retina display
I just bought a 13-inch macbook pro with retina display last week from apple. I want to make this macbook a protable workstation, so I upgraded the RAM to 16G. I also purchased an Samsung 1T SSD 840 EVO, which is suggested from most of the web, but when I took my laptop apart, the macbook is using a different SSD call PICe SSD, which is much smaller than a normal SSD.
Not sure if anyone has encountered the same issue? Is it possible to upgraded the SSD in this case or have to stuck with it?

your 840 EVO can’t be installed in place of your PCIe SSD. In theory, you could upgrade your MacBook Pro’s PCIe SSD with another PCIe SSD, but the availability of third-party PCIe SSDs is nearly (if not actually) zero at this time. In the interim, you could put your 840 EVO into an external enclosure. -
I just migrated from MacBook 13' OSX 10.6.8 to MacBook Pro 15' Retina OSX 10.8.2 with the use of Migration Assistant. When attempting to install my Magic Trackpad, the Bluetooth Assistant mentions "name not available" so that the device cannot be detected. In have disconnected the firewall.Thanks for assistance.
Create a new, temporary admin account and see if you can set it up in that account.
