  • Why does the macbook pro restart in few seconds after I select "shut down?"

When I select shut down, the computer goes off and comes on again in a few seconds.  It doesn't come on quickly like it does when I select restart.  It's like a ghost is in there.

Unplug all the USB devices you don't need or put a hub with its own power supply between the computer and them.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite keeps shutting down on its own

I upgraded to OS X Yosemite about a month ago, I have a macbook pro 2010, and in the last two weeks it started shutting down on its own. At first when i'd wake it, the fan would come on loudly and then it would shut down. In the last couple of days, I would make sure all programs were shut when it wasn't in use and then put it to sleep but every time i'd return it would be shut down and need a hard restart. If i just pressed the on button lightly it wouldn't start. And when i turn it on the fan comes on immediately. I'm a publisher so I'm working in indesign and illustrator a lot but I keep a constant look out for my memory and this isn't the problem. I'm working to a deadline here and can't afford to lose my computer for 3 days in the mac store (I live in Barbados) to get it fixed. Any advise?
    Thanks

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic report (with a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic") under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the report—the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang report.

  • When I tried to shut down my IPad( by sliding the red bar) the spinning gear started spinning and it won't shut down. The gear has been spinning for 18 hrs now. What is causing this and how can it be fixed?

When I tried to shut down my other Ipad(by sliding the red bar) the gear symbol started spinning but it won't shut down--the gear is still spinning 18 hrs later.

Try and force iPad into Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

  • Macbook pro wont start up and stuck on a restart screen, after mountain lion installtion failure

I tried installing Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro and the installation failed because my "hardrive was damage and could not be repaired" it then told me to restart my computer and try again which i did. However i am unable to even get back to my desktop because the Macbook starts up and i get the grey Apple logo and then this screen appears:
Instructing me to restart my computer, it has been stuck on this cycle for a few days now and i have no idea how to fix it.
Any help would be much appreciated
    StephBeard

    StephBeard,
if you still have your MacBook Pro’s original box, it can be found on one of the stickers on the box. If you don’t still have its box, it can be determined from your MacBook Pro’s serial number. If its serial number has eleven characters, write down the last three characters; if it has twelve characters, write down the last four. If you don’t have its box, please include in your reply those last three or four characters of its serial number.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot and getting gray screen, help!

I have a Macbook Pro 15" from mid2011. The warranty just expired one week ago.
I was normally using it without any problem, when suddenly the screen started to freeze and get some horizontal line. I had to force shut down with the power button couple times. The next day, my MBP wasn't booting during the startup.
When I turn on, I can hear the chime, the Apple logo show up and the little wheel turns, but after those things the screen remaing gray without any thing happens.
I have tried some steps that I found on discussion, forums, and websites like:
    - PRAM
    - cmd-s (to verify and clean the HD)
    - hold option and restore using a flash drive with Mountain Lion (after I choose the drive, I get a "blue" screen)
    - Remove the RAM and put back
    All those things weren't successful.
What do you guys think I should do now?
What are the main causes of gray screen or blue screen?
Should I replace my RAM or HD?
I'm avoiding to take to a technichian or a geek, because I have a lot of confidential work inside. Luckly, I have a backup of everything.
    I appreciate every reply made.
    Thanks!!

    Hi Eric,
    Thanks for your fast reply.
Yes, I've tried cmd-R. I get a "blue screen" with vertical lines. Pretty weird.
I'm unable to access the Disk Utility.
Do you think the HD is damaged?

  • Macbook pro wont start up and clicking sound

    Hi everyone
My girlfriend spilled a coke on my computer couple days ago and my MBP shut down immediately. After all i took it to the apple store in Turkey and they said the problem is from the battery and they took it off and I started to use it on charge until i get a new battery. All day i used my macbook pro on charge without battery on it. Anyway I turned my computer off and next day press the power button to start it up and it didnt start up at all. Mag safe works OK. Charger light is green light and everytime i press the power button I hear a clicking sound and my built in cam light is lighting up. I couldnt figure it out what is wrong.. If you guys had any problem like this before or know the problem about it please share it with me.. I will be appreciated.. Thanks

Problems related to liquid damage can manifest in different ways.
It is hard to recover from liquid damage.
    Best.

  • My macbook pro begins start up and shuts down.

It gets to the grey screen, the apple symbol shows up and a load bar comes on. Once the load bar is at half it shuts down. Any suggestions? It started occurring after a system update.

  • HT1338 My Macbook Pro is running slowly and Safari keeps locking up. What can I do to fix it?

My Macbook Pro has been running slowly for several weeks. Safari keeps locking up and I have to Force Quit.  It is very frustrating because it has always worked so well. My software is all up to date and I'm not using anything big - normally just Safari, Word, Excel or Powerpoint. Is there something I can do to clean it up or fix it?
    Thanks!

It would of had to be a very powerful magnet to damage, actually erase, the hard drive. That is the only thing that would cause it from starting up, a magnet powerful enough to erase part of the data on the drive. Hard drives are also shielded to some degree to prevent this from happening. If this particular mac was running lion or mountain lion try booting to the Recovery HD, hold down the command+r keys at startup. If that doesn't work try command+option+r key and hold those down until you see a globe on the screen. That will boot the system from over the internet from the Apple servers using the online recovery system. That is if the system can use the online recovery system. Only systems newer then late 2011 model can use it. From either type of boot try to repair the drive using disk utility. If that fails then you will need to reinstall OS X on the system.
I doubt the magnet cause any physical damage to the hardware in the system. So once you repair the drive or reinstall the OS the system should start working again.

  • My macbook pro (early 10") is stuck at gray apple loading screen but will not go further.

I've done start-up in safe-mode but it just shuts down afterward. What should i do?

    Try Safe Mode first ...
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
If you can't boot into Safe Mode successfully, insert your install disc so you can verify and repair the startup disk using Disk Utility.

  • MacBook - bluetooth doesn't work and system will not shut down

    Hi all together!
I have a problem with my MacBook with the newest updated Tiger 10.4.11: First the bluetooth went off and after using the hardware test the system sayed "no hardware problems". After this I recreated my system with the original MacOS-CD. It shut down properly but the bluetooth still didn't work (Meanwhile I've bought one of that 10 EURO external mini bluetooth adapter and it works). After updating, it did not shut down again and showed that bad "circle turning string thing". Then it went blue and nothing else happened. Sometimes it shuts down regularly but the most times I have to use the button for 5s. I don't think that's healthy for the computer. It seems that no one of my friends knows why this happens.
    Greetings

Well, I can't guess for how long it has been like this. Don't take responsibility for something that isn't your fault, even if it is your friend's system. I wont. Should it be your fault I hope you tell us what measures you did trying to help.
Say what PSU you got. Model and name and specs. please.
The only case-to-motherboard connections you really need is  Power. Start with getting that right according to motherboard and case manuals. You will probably not be able to see the text printed on motherboard about pin setting. And guessing will be of little help here. If you know what case it is Internet is your friend.

  • My fully charged macbook air won't turn on after a forced shut down??

last night i forced my MBA to shut down because it kept automatically shutting down and restarting by itself. after that, i tried to turn it back on and nothing worked. i tried all those tricks by pressing different keys to turn it back on but none of that worked. i only got this computer like 2 months ago so im pretty annoyed right now.

A two month old MBA is under warranty.  An appointment at an Apple store genius bar will put your Air back in operation.
    Ciao.
