MacBook Pro 15" vs. 17" Help Me Decide

Hi Guys!
I'm ready to upgrade from my old PC to a Macintosh.
I'm leaning towards the Macbook Pro. . .
I work in programs like Illustrator, Photoshop, and now I'm learning to design websites.
So, I need the processing power of a 15' or 17'. Now, I NEED the portability option.
So, Many people have told me to get the fifteen inch'er and just get an external screen
at home, which is an option eventually... But then also many people have told me to
go with the 17?
What do you think? Im also a highschool student, so this will go to school..
but keep in mind this will also be my work computer.

IN DEFENSE OF THE 17" MBP!!!:
1.  The larger screen has superior resolution to the 15" 1920 x 1200.  Easier to work with multiple widows.  It has the CinemaScope of laptop displays!
2.  the 17" MBP is 1.12" wider, .69" deeper and 16 oz. heavier that the 15".  Minor disadvantage at best.  Sleeves for are easy to find for the 17" MBP (Apple store).  (Cases a little more so........shhhhhh)
3.  More port options.  3 USB vs 2 for the 15".  An express card slot which allows for eSata connection which is much faster than Firewire.  Very useful when transferring large data files to external HHDs.
The fact that I have two 17" MBPs has absolutely NO bearing on my objective evaluation of the two options!
The truth is that either one will do the tasks which you have mentioned.  I simply prefer the 17".  Which ever one you decide to get, you will have made a good choice.
Ciao.

    gta 4 steam !

If GTA IV believes the system is under specification even though the computer is powerful enough to run the game with higher settings, the following will fix this problem.
This will work if your problem looks like this: "resource usage 230/60" and you can't change any other setting
    Just follow the steps:
    Step 1: Create a text file named ‘commandline.txt’ (without the " ")
Step 2: Put the following statement inside it:
    i5 users: -availablevidmem 18.0 (with the -)
    i7 users: -availablevidmem 22.0 (with the -)
Step 3: Open the main GTAIV folder (C/ program files (86)/ rockstar games/ GTA IV) and copy the commandline.txt file into it.
Step 4: locate the file "GTAIV.exe" (in GTA main folder)
Right click the file and select Properties
Under the shortcut tab, you will see an area that says Target
Modify the Target adding the command line after the last quotation mark (just add the statement you added in commandline.txt)
    (remember, i5 users: -availablevidmem 18.0 / i7 users: -availablevidmem 22.0)
It should look something like this:
Make sure to add space between " and -"
I hope This helps, although late cx

I've installed windows 7 with the help of bootcamp on my macbook pro 2011.
Please help me how to install mac drivers for windows7 64 bit???

You either download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant and save to USB FAT disk, or you insert and use 10.6.x OS X DVD when in Windows and install and run the SETUP from there.

Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc.  The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc.  If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
    3 Follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
Windows that appear only briefly during the installation don’t require your input.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you mustrespond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows.
Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New Hardware  Wizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only).
5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
6 Check for updated Boot Camp drivers by using Apple Software Update or going to www.apple.com/support/bootcamp.
If You Have Problems Installing the Device Drivers
If it appears that the Boot Camp drivers weren’t successfully installed, try repairing them.
    To repair Boot Camp drivers:
1 Start up your computer in Windows.
2 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
3 If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
4 Click Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example,if your built-in iSight camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the iSight driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the Mac OS X installation disc.

you can't add or mofidy partition numbers. especially not if and once you have windows installed.
boot from Windows 7 DVD afterwards
but first you have to tell us and Christopher what and how you partitioned your system.

    Paragon CampTune
Paragon CampTune is a commercial product that is designed expressly for this task. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/camptune/ It consists of a downloadable ISO that needs to be burned to a disc and booted from in order to resize the partitions costs US$19.95.
    Securing Dual-System Configuration
Imaging is still the most affordable and robust way to secure computer data. Unfortunately Mac OS X backs up only HFS+ volumes, leaving Windows with dual-system configurations unsecured. You can permanently lose all of your data unless you have a Windows-compatible backup solution.
Paragon’s CampTune and Paragon’s Drive Copy for Mac can secure the entire dual-system configuration. CampTune creates traditional images of volumes or entire hard disks, Drive Copy can copy them to other disks. In case of an emergency, you can restore the previously created image or copy all your data back to its original state.
    GParted Live
GParted Live is similar to CampTune as it is also distributed as a bootable image that needs to be copied to a CD/DVD or USB flash drive. As free and open source software, distributed under the GPL, it will always be available free. Since it has more functions than CampTune, it may be harder for folks who are not as experienced with partitioning hard drives. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
    iPartition
Coriolis Systems' iPartition is a £29.95 ($44.95 US) utility that runs in Mac OS X and allows resizing of all of the relevant partition formats, including HFS+, FAT32, and NTFS. It provides a Mac-oriented user interface that may be easier to manage than some of the free utilities. As it is not capable of resizing the boot disk, it requires a bootable external disk or a boot DVD. (A tool to create a boot DVD is included.)
    Paragon Partition Manager
From the makes of CampTune is a commercial tool that is similar in functionality to GParted Live, but has a more polished/friendly user interface than GParted Live. Previously only the US$79.95 Professional version supported all the features required for this, but as of version 11 the US$39.95 Personal version has also been reported to work. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-personal/
    Winclone/Disk Utility
Winclone is a free tool for creating and restoring backup images of your Windows partition. One of its key features is that it can restore to a larger partition than the one the image was created from.
NOTE: Winclone has been discontinued, but for now remains available and capable of completing these tasks (including creating and restoring Windows 7 images).
Winclone updated to support Lion Winclone updates and download
Disk Utility can resize HFS+ (Mac OS) partitions, but is currently incapable of resizing NTFS partitions, so you could use it to reduce the size of the HFS+ partition and create a new larger placeholder MS-DOS (FAT) partition
    The full process would be:
    Backup Windows partition with Winclone.
(if the new Windows partition is smaller than the old one make sure you set the preferences in Winclone to save the image as an uncompressed dmg)
    Delete old Windows partition
    Resize current Mac Partition
Create new Windows partition as MS-DOS (FAT) in free space after Mac OS partition.
(If the new Windows partition is smaller than the old one an additional step is required: shrink the filesystem on the image by selecting Tools->Shrink Windows (NTFS) Filesystem)
Reboot your computer for the new Windows partition to mount properly (winclone may not restore if you don't reboot)
Restore Winclone partition over new Windows partition
An alternate Winclone based process is described in the External Guides section
    Native OS utilities
MR user Kazyua reports that you can use the disk management utilities provided with the current operating systems if you want to do it manually. Windows 7 and OS X both have partition resizing functions built in. In OS X, open Disk Utility and manually shrink the mac HFS+ partition by dragging the lower right corner. Then in windows go to the start menu and type "disk management" into the search box then hit enter. You should get an overview of the drives you have and the individual partitions. Right-clicking on the partition gives an "Extend Volume" option. The Windows NTFS volume should then be extended into the free space you created with Disk Utility. This method has not worked for other users, so try at your own risk.

  • MacBook Pro smell and need help deciding on which MacBook Pro to buy

So I bought a 17-inch MacBook Pro from my brother in August of 2009. He bought it in March of 2008. A couple days ago I noticed that my MacBook Pro has been releasing a really bad smell almost as if burning plastic. But the smell isn't that bad. What could be wrong with my MacBook Pro? I'm getting a New 15 or 13-inch MacBook Pro in June so idk if I should just not worry about it? And I need help deciding if I should get a high end 13-inch MacBook Pro or a low end 15-inch MacBook Pro?

What could be wrong with my MacBook Pro?
Take your computer to an Apple Store. The staff will be able to check as to the cause of the smell.

  • IMac 24" or MacBook Pro??? HELP!

hi. I want to buy a computer and I can't decide if I want a iMac 24" or a MacBook Pro. I work with a lot of videos and a lot of pictures. Also I use a lot of music. I have a 80 G iPod and it's almost full. I would use final cut express hd, imove, iphoto, all ilife, ilife, safari, mail, ect. What should i buy. Should i buy a 2.16 ghz imac or 2.33 ghz imac. or 256 video ram on 2.16 or 2.33? If i get a macbook pro should i get a 2.2, 2.4, or 17". Help is appreciated!!! Thanks. Anyone know when the Wireless N is in the iMac. Also, how much ram should i put in the computer and do u know if they are going to update the imac 24" with 2 gb ram built in??? THANKS! The more words, the better!

802.11n is available for a couple dollars for the current iMac. Or if you bought Apple's Airport Extreme 802.11n, the software is included.
    The advantage of the iMac:
7200 RPM drive built-in with less seek times than the MacBook Pro.
up to 750 GB internal storage.
    Larger built-in screen.
The advantage of the MacBook Pro. Portability, ability to run during bad weather, faster processor speed. 4 GB of RAM expandability. Express/34 SATA II expandability which may be faster than the drive built-in to the iMac. The possibility for Extra Firewire or USB ports built-in, or camera card reader added via the Express/34 slot which is faster than USB. Of course if you add an Express/34 SATA II card, you lose the portability advantage of it, but it does mean more expansion options for additional hard disk space.

  • MacBook Pro stuck on mute, help!

So, I have a MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8. Four days ago, after taking a pair of headphones out of the headphone jack, the volume bar greyed out, the input & output devices in System Preference completely disappeared, and my computer won't even play the turn-on chime. I've tried restarting, turning off and turning on, resetting PRAM, going on safe mode, you name it. And yeah, obvious as it is, I've tried wriggling inside the headphone jack to no avail. Any other suggestions before I drag it on down to the Genius Bar?

right, allow me if you will to drop a bomb, i am a temporary macbook user but from what i can tell, and from what i have read, my notion are correct in regards to these computers, the woman allowing me to use this computer appearently decided that it was okay to spend $900.00 on a machine that works no better then a 5 year old smartphone, and functions like something i bought infected from a pawnshop, the point is that you get what you deserve for buying this device, i had just got done reading another artical on the apple support site in regards to this same issue, you have got a guy that was using a toothpick to fix the issue and it worked and i can't help but laugh because i have never had this issue when using a windows laptop at or around the price range of $280.00, and windows *****...
    take it from anon

  • GPU 0 Die Temp Sensor ERROR on a MacBook Pro. Can anybody help?

    Hello.
My wife has a 15-inch, 2.4GHz MacBook Pro model 3.1 laptop.
All of sudden the screen started to flicker, and after that,  it could no longer be booted. Applelogo visible but the timewheel stops and nothing happens.
I managed to get hold of a copy of ASD (Apple Service Diagnostic) for her computer, and I found out what was wrong:
There is a test called "Temp Sensor - GPU 0 Die Temp" that fails. I get the following message:
"Temp sensor GPU 0 Die Temp test 1 - Sensor Reads Within Operating Range
    - Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR - Unable to read sensor
    - TEST FAILED -
Temp sensor GPU 0 Die Temp test 8 - Sensor Noise Test
    - Checks that sensor Noise is within spec.
ERROR - Unable to read sensor
    - TEST FAILED -"
If I look in the "Hardware Profile" under "sensor" I find the following:
    "Sensor
    type:            Temperature
    location:            TG0D
    low-limit:            15
    high-limit:        85
    reading:            1.0
    description:        GPU 0 Heatsink Temp
    noise-tolerance:    1.0"
The thing is that the problem seems to be intermittent. It comes and goes. All of a sudden the test passes and I can boot the computer. Some days the computer can  work for a whole day, so it doesn´t  seem to be related to temperature.
What do you guys and girls think? Is this fixable by myself? Does anybody know where this sensor is located? Maybe it´s just a bad connection, since it´s intermittent?
I feel I have come a little bit on the way to be able to solve this issue, and it would feel like a failure to be forced to leave the computer at an Apple Service Center, if it´s even worth it to do that. There is a risk that the computer is not worth a repair.
Could someone please chime in here for a clever advice?
    Thanks.
    Bo Reimer.

    Welcome Bo!
It may be related to a known problem with MBPs 3,1 and 4,1. Some had a bad Nvidea Geforce 8600M GT video chipset that could fail under high heat cpnditions. There is an Apple Repair Extension Program (REP) that will fix the defect at no charge for up to four years from date of purchase:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
You'll need to have an Apple retail store or an authorized service provider check the computer with a special test gadget for positive ID of the problem to qualify. If it does, you get a new logic board. Reported turnaround for the fix is from same day to three days.
If their test does not turn up the Nvideo curse, you still have an affordable repair option if you live in North America (It would he helpful if you fill in the "Geographic Information" field in your profile--at this point I'm having to assume you're in N. America)).
The option is a depot repair. Apple sends your computer to their central refurbishment facility and bascially fixes anything outside of cosmetic damage for a flat fee of about US$315--much cheaper that a new computer. Taxes and shipping may apply.
People who have used this option are reporting excellent results and a turnaround of about one business week.

You're welcome. Your panic report seems to have the same references mine did regarding the graphics card. I went to the Genius Bar because everything I tried to solve the problem didn't help. These are 2 of the links to info. that gave me hope that I might get the problem "permanently" solved without having to pay for repairs.

  • Macbook Pro Problems. Please help!

My computer has recently been experiencing some problems. Less than a month ago I had about 5 kernel panics. Suddenly, they went away, but other problems have arose. Finder keeps on relaunching and nearly every program unexpectedly quits. I have no clue why this is happening, please help. I am using a Macbook Pro, 15" screen, 2.33 Ghz, 2 GB RAM.

and, i might add, since it appears he is still running 10.4.8 and may not have done the 10.4.10 update, it would seem to narrow down the problem to possibly bad airport firmware or bad airport driver. something that apple needs to address. i suggest you call appleCare and get a case number started and join the club.

  • New MacBook Pro disabled keystrokes! HELP!

    Hi there, folks
After upgrading to the new MacBook Pro and and the Leopard operating system I can no longer use the keyboard keystrokes that replicated hitting the 0 or asterix on the number pad. It used to be fn+m for ram preview and fn+j for marking during playback, but now when I click those buttons nothing happens. Is there some setting in osX I have to change?
    Thanks for your help!
    Best,
    Fredo

I'll reiterate my vote for a whole replacement keyboard. I have a semi-regular gig where I go to a client's office with my MacBook Pro and do AE work onsite for a day-at-a-time. Without numpad functionality, the MBP keyboard is basically useless in AE, and I'm not prepared to reassign and re-learn a kajillion keystrokes just to get a day's work done.
I used to use a logitech USB numeric keypad, which had all the extra keys like PgUp/PgDwn etc.
But a local store was selling the older white Apple Bluetooth keyboards (not the newer silver ones, which now have no numpad either - somebody at Apple is seriously on drugs) for US$35 each. I bought a couple and use one via Bluetooth on my MBP. Because it's the same keyboard I use on my desktop machines, it makes my work environment identical.
Not the best solution in the world, but one that has, frankly, been forced on me by Apple. They simply aren't considering applications like AE (or ProTools, or a bunch of other Pro apps) when they ditch such basic functionality.

  • I have a Java/CVE-2010-94 virus on my macbook pro. Can Someone help me fix this?

I used Virus Barrier Express that I downloaded from the App Store and it found a virus named Java/CVE-2010-94. I ran Virus Barrier Express again after I prssed the "fixed it" button; however, i'm not sure if this virus or any other virus is still on my MacBook Pro. Can someone please help me know if i'm safe to use my Mac?
*The first sign of any type of virus was when I was on a website and my screen froze. I couldn't move anything or press anything. Something popped up and told me to turn off the Mac. I had no choice and I did turn it off. I used my Virus Barrier Express to scan any viruses, but nothing appeared. It only appeared after I downloaded new updates yesterday.
*I just did some research and it turned out to be a "kernel Panic". http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742 I haven't encountered another one ever since so does that mean my Mac is safe now?

    Steven --
Get rid of the VirusBarrier Express.  At this time, there are no Mac viruses.  All you're doing with that thing is slowing down your Mac.  Look in your VBE folder, to see if there's an UNinstaller.  I don't know why Apple is making these things available.  They're garbage, 98% of them.  Two good ones are ClamXav and Sophos.  But still, IMHO, they are unnecessary.
Kernel Panics, on the other hand, are serious.  If you don't have any more of them, that's good.  If you have any more of them, come back and post your Panic report here.
Here's info on this virus, which should affect only PCs.

But the have some great advice to avoid malware:
Take the following steps to help prevent infection on your computer:
Enable a firewall on your computer.
Get the latest computer updates for all your installed software.
    Use up-to-date antivirus software.
Limit user privileges on the computer.
Use caution when opening attachments and accepting file transfers.
Use caution when clicking on links to web pages.
    Avoid downloading pirated software.
Protect yourself against social engineering attacks.
    Use strong passwords.

  • My Macbook Pro is so slow-.HELP!

    Hello everyone,
I have had my Macbook pro for about 4 years now and it is incredibly slow.  I believe it is because of the lack of space on the hard drive or something like that.  I am not very tech savvy but when I went to my local Apple store they said that my Macbook only has 2g of somekind of internal memory which is why it is running slow.  The guy I spoke with actually recommended buying more memory on Amazon and installing it myself or pay someone because if I did it at the Apple store it would run around $200 vs. Amazon would be around $40.  The processor that I have is a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.  Memory: 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3.  I am running version 10.7.5 software.  Also when digging further it says that I have a 160 GB SATA Disk and that out of all that space I only have 507.7 mb of storage left.  I would that this would obviously be my problem with the computer being so sluggish taking forever to have more that one app open at a time and so on.  Also what is shows is taking up all the memory is labeled under 'other' and has used 158.67GB.  Audio, Movies, Photos, Apps, and Backups all show 'Zero KB'.  I don't understand that though because I easily have 7000+ pictures on this Macbook.  Could they be under the 'Other'?
Any help with the direction to take to make this Macbook Pro faster would be greatly appreciated.  Has anyone ever purchased additional memory or what I need on Amazon to save some money?  Or just tell me what I need lol.  Thank you to everyone who helps me out!
    Donovan
** Also I just received a message after posting this that the 'start up disc is full' on this Macbook Pro and I need to delete some files or something.  Any help here would be great as well.  Thank you everyone.

    Donovan,
MacTracker is just an Apple database - but I was able to find your model by using it.
Only you can determine if you've files that can be deleted. Everything inside your user folder (except the Library folder) is fair game to be tossed. I know you want to keep your iPhoto library, though! You could get an external drive and copy your iPhoto library to it and I'm sure that would free up some space. That may be your best, but temporary, fix. I would still recommend a larger internal drive and more RAM. Since you have a Firewire 800 port, you may want to look at OWC, again, for external drives with FW800 connections - that's the speediest port on your model.
I trust OWC on any of their external drives - they're truly Mac experts. For RAM, I prefer Crucial, although OWC sells fine RAM as well.
