Macbook Pro 17" 2.8 GHZ Core 2 Duo, or MBP 15.4" 2.66 i7?

Basically I cant decide which laptop to get.
I can get the older version for 1299 or the new one for 1799.
I will be using the laptop for internet, music, little bit of basic photoshop, creating some music etc.. But nothing heavy graphics based..
What am I better going for, as im taking it that the i7 is really for the heavy graphic user to up speeds etc?

I switched about 7 years ago and have never found a situation where even a 2 year old Mac isn't as fast in use as anything but a blown out the doors gaming Windows box. Mac just seems to get up and running fast for some reason. Other than recently when good deals have caused me to flip 3 MBP's in about 5 months, the last one I had was 2 years and previous to that was 4 years. I only upgraded the 2 year one to get the unibody model. My main Mac Pro is the original 8-core model and I have no interest or need to upgrade it any time soon. My wife used her 12" Powerbook for 6 years before we finally upgraded her this year. Macs are like rocks, they never wear out.

That's too hot, for just Internet.
I can see if you just stopped playing a 3D game and then went to use the Internet you would get that sort of temps.
Try booting a cold machine, then only surfing the web, if you get 63-73 C temps, something is wrong, it should be 40-45 C.
The integrated graphics machines are hot, but yours seems too hot.

Can I upgrade my Macbook Pro 15" 2.16 Ghz Core Duo superdrive?

Currently, my macbook pro core duo has a superdrive that does not support DVD DL burning, I am wondering if it is possible to upgrade my superdrive to a newer version that does support DVD DL burning. If so, will I need to reformat my computer and reinstall Leopard?

2010 13in macbook pro wifi slower than original core duo 15in mbp.

hmmm...ive been noticing that on my new comp 2010 13in mbp that that wifi isnt as strong as my original 15in mbp.
when i alt-click the wifi, its substantally less and also the range drops off faster. i have a 2.4/5ghz dlink extreme that used to give me constant steady 300mbs connection. Now it seems as if i avg 150-250 with a RSSi of -57 sitting 10ft from the router.
Was wondering if this is due to the latest airport update.

Maybe you should take a look at your Firefox add-ons and get rid of the ones you don't really need. Also, you have two torrent items mentioned in your report. Downloading torrents runs the risk of bringing in malware.
Another thing to do as maintenance is to start into Recovery -- holding down Command and R keys together while booting up -- and using Disk Utility (bottom of the box that appears) to Verify your disk and Repair disk permissions.

The installer just before it starts has in its package contents an InstallESD.dmg file a DVD burnable image to install on additional computers in the home without downloading over again. You can run OS X Mountain Lion with 2 GB of RAM, but you cannot be sure that it will work correctly.
"MacBookPro3,1" belongs to the Late 2007 MacBook Pro, so it is compatible with OS X Mountain Lion. However, you say your MacBook Pro has got an Intel Core Duo processor, when it should have got an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. You can check which processor you have in  > About this Mac.
I recommend you to upgrade RAM. You can buy more RAM at OWC or Crucial.

It actually shouldn't allow you to upgrade. Your configuration should be detected and then it should reject your attempt to upgrade.

Brand new macbook pro 17" 2.2 ghz core i7 keyboard and mouse freeze

I just got the macbook pro 17" as a replacement for a broken earlier model. I ran all the software updates and installed xcode and ran software updates again. Other than that it's a clean system. I've literally only had it for hours and was starting to install stuff and the keyboard and mouse completely froze. The power button worked correctly and got me the options to reboot etc, but since the keyboard didn't work i had to hold down the power button.
This is going to be a pain because it's probably intermittent. There was nothing in the system.log to indicate a problem with the keyboard.
Anyone else been experiencing this with this model?

I now have a Monoprice HDMI to Mini Displayport. I am trying to connect my Macbook Pro 15 to my new recently bought Sony Bravia 46'. I also have SwitchResX on my mbp.
Anyway, it's not working at all. The Sony is not detecting my MBP.
I fiddle with SwitchResX and nothing works. I look everywhere for my TV's specific EDID profiles. No luck.
Anyone out there care to help me out, please.

The other way around is the same. I tried "detect display", nothing happens. Nothing showing another display at all.
If it was a defective cable then I would NOT get a replacement because I just don't want the hassle of working on it and the problem will be the same.
Most likely to mail it back to get cash back.
Umm, to add, I am running 10.6.4 and have NOT yet upgrade it to 10.6.5. I still don't think that'll solve the problem.

Also, from time to time, the macbook pro freezes, and it just sits there, i cant use the trackpad, keys, nothing... it doesnt even respond to closing and opening the lid, i always have to hard-restart/reset it.
It has already happened like 4 or 5 times since i got it (about 3 months).
Just wanted to add that up.

Installed BootCamp 3.1 on Macbook Pro 1,1 (early 2006) Core Duo - Mac OS X

No problems - installation went smoothly, all features and functions work, including eject button. Running Windows 7 - very fast. Even though my model is not supported by Apple for this upgrade, it works fine. Whew!

Same here, on a 2.66 Xeon Mac Pro and Windows 7/32.
The interesting aspect was that I pulled all but the Mac Boot HDD and the Windows HDD which was getting the install on a stand alone disk. I then simply followed the instructions on the bootcamp installation guide to complete the install. After Windows 7 was up and running, I re-inserted the HDD with my original Windows XP bootcamp partition. Windows 7 saw the drive (along with mac drives as well), making it a straightforward process to copy files over and install software. Very impressed that some fairly elderly XP software worked under Windows 7.
For some reason, I thought Windows 7/32 allowed for the use of more RAM. I'm only showing 2 GB available out of 8 installed. Windows accurately reports the total RAM installed.
Didn't want to mess with Windows 7/64 due to software compatibility right now. It still looks and feels like a faster version of XP though. Not exactly earth shattering.

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current Tiger Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and later.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
E. If updating:
Download and install update(s)
Use Software Update, or
Download standalone updater(s).
