Macbook Pro 17" Black screen when selecting Windows 7

I got a Macbook Pro 17", late 2010 that has been experiencing an issue when selecting Windows 7 as my Boot OS. This is an intermittent issue. It happens like once every 8 or 10 usage. I already took it 2 the Apple Geniuses twice and I was turn around because, They say, They don't do Windows.
At this point, I'm hoping that Apple will come out with a Firmware Update or anything that will fix this issue. I know There are other users in the same boat as me or worst waiting for Apple to come out with a remedy.

You might want to reformat and re-read what you had.

I recommend buying Paragon NTFS if you really need to write to Windows (you shouldn't, I never have but had used NTFS driver at one time).

  • My macbook pro shows blank screen when I started..help me..

My macbook pro shows blank screen when I started . (It's like in same state when power off. ) fan sound and hard disk is running. So i connected it Through external monitor via mini display to VGA cable. I can see everything on external monitor. My display of Mac needs to change? How much it cost ?? I found so many forum discussion said that if nvedia card is faulty then its happen...let me know suggestions...I given it to apple care service station n they r telling yr display needs to change its cost me a lot.. I can't afford. And can't spend that much for 3 yr old version as new versions of macbook pro is cost vice reasonable.. can I have any suggestion?

If running 10.7 or later hold down Command-R at Startup.
    This should invoke recovery Mode.
    Choose Disk Utility.
Select your Hard drive. Inspect the SMART Status in the lower right of the window for "Verified".
Select the Mac OS X Volume (originally Macintosh HD) click (Repair Disk)
If errors, run again until it comes clean or gets stuck.
    Report any error messages.

Time to take a trip to the Apple store genius bar for a free diagnosis.  It could be a faulty GPU, faulty display or a bad display connection.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Black Screens and Becomes Unresponsive

I've been having issues with my laptop where all of a sudden it would black screen and become unresponsive. Checking the console messages I see a lot of records referring to "AppleVTD: waiting space". This seems to be a reoccuring problem. I've already repaired my disk once and now it's happening again, I've ran the disk utility and it is telling me that my hard drive needs repairs again.
Here is an extract from the console messages from today:

I got about a hundred lines within that same error within that second
Witin the next 2 minutes I was able to reboot and it is running, for now. I'll be doing another round of disk repair, but this isn't sustainable. Can anybody elp me in identifying the root cause of these issues?
    Thanks in advance,

and then my entire system freezes.  This has been happening at least once daily, and it's killing my productivity.
Have you figured out what was going on?
And, are you running any virtualization software, like Parallels?
Anyone out there know what's going on?  I'm pretty desperate here...
    Thanks so much!

  • MacBook Pro 2010 - Black Screen of Death / Blue Screen on Windows side

only recently i have been having problems 3/4 times per day with the computer going from working okay to the black screen but still able to see the keyboard lights are on. As nothing happens shutdown needs to be forced by holding down the power-on button.
There appears to be no set list of programs running at the time and shuts down completely at random.
Also while on the Windows side i get the BSOD, and other times while using Excel/Powerpoint they crash when i go to edit text boxes everytime.
I think it might be a RAM issue as i also run Parallels for Windows with Windows 7 ultimate as i need to run some Windows programs.
    Laptop is
    Ideas anyone?

just happened again and here is the Error report it generated, maybe someone can tell me what this means (apart from giving me a Black screen)

  • 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro crashes (black screen) on Windows 7

Hi, I am running Windows 7 (bootcamp obviously) and out of the blue my screen went black, my only option was to make a hard reset. I can then run Windows on Safe Mode, and I found out that if I turn off the graphics card (HD 4000) then Windows will run OK in "normal" mode.
That happened a month ago, and the only thing I could think of was re-installing Windows via Bootcamp. Windows ran flawless until  a couple of days ago where the black screen appeared again and the only way I managed to get into Windows again was either on Safe Mode or in normal mode (with the graphics drivers unabled).
Please help me, I really need to run Windows for work and this is really bothering me.

Try reseating RAM that can often cause a display problem.

"Don't think it's the inverter since that helps turn on the backlight on."
Actually the inverter bumps the 5 V. ? from the logic board and bumps it up to high voltage to drive the back light.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/51132/MacBook+inverter+board...how+to+test
Checks you could try would be to check the input voltage to the inverter board. Check the inverter cable for shorts. These are easily seen on close inspection.  If there is a short it could have taken out the tiny fuse that's on the logic board. Or the inverter board itself could be bad. Sub board repairs would require known good replacements. I have identified that fuse but on an earlier model and repaired it after replacing the inverter cable but no tech would go that far.

  • My Macbook Pro crashes(Grey Screen) when i unplug my 3G USB Dongle

Not sure if this has happened to anyone else, but just after I installed Yosemite my 3G USB dongle Huawei K4305 Vodafone is not working anymore and when I unplug the dongle my macbook Crashes.
I have installed the latest firmware and software for the dongle.
I have done the hardware diagnostic on the Macbook, everything is working and the dongle is working fine as I tested it another Macbook with Mavericks and it works.
I tried to reinstall Yosemite but my machine just hangs on black screen and won't reboot.
    MacBook Pro 13" 16GB Memory, i7 2.9Ghz 750GB HDD

    HI vojtabe,
What I did was, I uninstalled the Vodafone software completely first, then restarted the mac, then installed the Huawei driver and connected up the USB dongle and did not select to install the software and i just pushed the eject icon in finder and unplugged it, and it never crashed my machine after this.
Don't install the software as currently the Vodafone software only goes up to Mavericks.

  • Late 2007 MacBook Pro intermittent black screen

I have this very odd issue with an intermittent black screen on a late 2007 MacBook Pro (4GB/320GB 7200rpm) Mac OS X 10.6.8 v1.1
Apologies for the length of the post.
In cycles separated by a few days to a week, the screen will flicker to black, initially very briefly, then for longer periods until it is black continuously, where it stays from a few hours to a couple of days then it flickers to normal, again very briefly then with longer intervals until it is steady and normal. It can then be fine for a week or more.
When the screen is working, it's perfect; no lines, stripes, colour shift or any difference to what one would expect. When it is black, the backlight is still operational (and dimming when on battery power) but there is no image - all pixels are solid black. Shining a torch on/through the screen does not reveal any image. When mirrored, the external monitor shows the brightness adjustment moving up and down in response to the key presses but it has no effect on the internal screen.
My external display (Eizo) is always functional no matter what the built-in one is doing and is completely solid at all times.
There is no correlation to temperature (I have SMC fan control), sleep, restart, fan speed, power source or anything environmental. The MacBook is on a fan stand for most of the time. External connections make no difference. If the fault is present before changing any of these factors, it is there after.
I am aware that this machine has known vulnerabilities with GPU and display issues but none present quite like this. I have performed the usual trawl on the net and I now know more than I ever wanted to about attempts to fix it.
    Software remedies attempted:
    Resetting PRAM and power manager.
No sleep image file (never used this option). I deleted the old swap files that were there in any case but this unsurprisingly did nothing.
Resetting the display settings via keyboard commands or Sys Prefs.
Screen savers and settings are not implicated.
Nothing whatever in the console logs that I can see.
TechTool Pro gives video RAM a clean bill of health and all other components pass including tests on the HD with TTP and DiskWarrior.
Safe boot and booting from systems on backups seem to have no effect but one safe boot restored the screen briefly - I think it was a coincidence.
I updated the OS from 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 while this fault was coming and going and it made no difference. I usually prepare the machine for updates by running the cron jobs, repairing permissions etc.
In expectation of suffering this fault when the external monitor was not connected, I installed iScreen on the MacBook and use my iPad as a supplementary display and that works well too. Having all three operating, when the internal is functioning, is quite fun.
    Hardware tests:
I removed the upper plate holding the keyboard and the interior of the machine was very clean with only some small dust accumulations in the fans, which were removed. There was no sign of any discolouration, corrosion, or other unpleasantness on the PCBs. All connectors and wiring looked good.
Every part of the logic board, cables and connectors were percussed, gently deflected and spray freezed, both while the fault was present and not (machine running) with no effect.
Display back was removed and the LCD board given the same treatment. No changes.
Display cable disconnected at both ends and tested for continuity (probe resistance accounted for) and consistency with a Fluke 87 multimeter - passed OK. On a scope, active signals and power were present on all the pins when the display was working but the fault did not occur during this test, which might have been interesting.
No apparent shorting of the display cable but without removing it this cannot be proved.
Problem not affected by hinge position, pressure on any part of the display, twisting, percussing etc.
Used compressed air to blow out the connectors which were reseated carefully.
After all this, the machine remains in exactly the same state, cycling between operational and black with various flickering stages as it comes and goes.
All I can deduce is that as the external monitor has always been OK, the GPU itself is probably working fine and the fault is more likely in the LCD panel electronics. I doesn't feel like a software issue to me but heck, I don't know what is going on.
Does anyone have any experience of something like this?
    Thanks,
    Joel.

    Thomas,
Thanks for your post and I'm sorry you have suffered the same problems.
My trust levels are not very high because it's clear there is some systemic display problem with this model, which is why Apple are fixing them. As I mentioned, we have no idea if the replacement boards are any different to the originals. From your experience it would look like they are not and my suspicion is that it is very unlikely that Apple made a new batch of these logic boards a long time after the model was discontinued. If anyone has evidence to the contrary, I stand to be corrected.
As you say, the difference between our two faults appears to be that a physical deformation of some part of the machine does something with yours but never did with mine. At one point I felt that a short in the internal display cable seemed like the best explanation for the problem but it looks like it's more complex than that because of the behaviour of our external displays and subsequent strange booting behaviour.
If, as I have read, the soldering of the GPU was faulty and leads to progressive failure of the graphics sub-system, then all kinds of strange behaviours could arise and produce the intermittent problems we have seen. Micro-fractures of the chip interconnects would suggest that tiny movements might change the presentation of the fault. If soldering really is the issue, then keeping the machine as cool as possible will extend the life of the connections. Consequently mine will sit on a fan-stand for the rest of its days, which is no problem because it just had Win 7 installed on it and I don't want to be seen in public with it in that state ;-)
All we can conclude is that a logic board swap fixes the problem for some indeterminate period, so the problem is on that board. Whether it is a design fault with the NVIDIA chip itself or a manufacturing fault with the board is not clear but we can probably forget LCD panels, cables, sleep issues, power supplies and all the other peripheral issues unless there is yet another design issue that causes the GPU to fail.
Are you intending to present your machine to Apple for another go at a fix?

  • Macbook pro a1278 black screen , restart after 5 sec

hello, i have a macbook pro 2010 (a1278) , everything works fine until I changed my ram and my hdd.
Now I have black screen and my laptop start (i hear the fan, and hdd..) and 3-5 sec after he restart.., i do pram-smc reset, power management reset.... i put back the old ram and hdd and the same problem.
If somebody have a idea what is the problem..thank you

Take it in for diagnosis. Something you did when you made the changes apparently caused the problem.

  • Macbook Pro - pitch black screen. solutions?

My Macbook Pro 13" bought in late 2011, the screen is pitch black when i switched it on this afternoon, i had used it last night and there was 0 issues. i have tried to restart it a few times, but nothing seems to work. How do I solved this problem?

    Try SMC reset:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Late 2008 Macbook Pro Random Black screen

My Macbook Pro had been having this problem for the past year or so, but lately it has gotten significantly worse. Whenever I am watching a YouTube video, or playing music, the screen will turn black for about 10 seconds and then turn back on by itself. This happens whether or not the computer is plugged in to an outlet, or is just running off the battery (I just replaced the battery last week). It will even do this when I am just sitting here browsing the internet. I took it to an Apple Store and they reset the SMC and had be purchase a new battery saying that was the problem, which I doubted, and the problem is still here. I have all my energy saver preferences off, ran system updates, and have done pretty much everything I can think of. Does anyone know what can cause the computer to randomly go to sleep for 10 seconds and then turn back on?

    Hi,
I tried it all but it didn't work,
The Nvidia problem is when the screen is fully black, but when my screen gets black I can change the background lighting, they also tested the Nvidia chip but that was fine.
I also tried the Pram/Vram etc but it didn't work.
I now downgraded back to 10.5 and upgrade again to 10.6 and I hope it will be fixed,

  • Macbook pro continuously black screening and rebooting-any solutions?

Ever since upgrading OS to Mountain Lion there have been numerous times when waking the Macbook, it goes to black screen and reboots.  Several times it has rebooted then immediately shut down and rebooted again.  I am also running Paralles 9 which I needed to install after upgrading to the OS 6 operating system.  Has anyone else had this problem and is there an easy fix?

    You might try this:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
