MacBook Pro 17" Game Distortion

I just had my monitor and some internal pieces replaced, and I am getting some funky effects in the game World of Warcraft. I have went threw them and tried all the software solutions, so I figure it is a hardware problem. In the game, I am getting tons of distortion: sometimes it is lots of lines and planes coming out from other players and objects, and other times it is lots of artifacts. I am unsure what to do now, and I really hope there is an easy fix because I just got my mac back after it was away for 2+ weeks getting repaired. The game worked perfectly before my mac went away, and now it is working better on a computer that has specs that are much worse than the macbook pro.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I also get artifacts on any other game that I play. Is this because of their fix to my mac? It seems that they screwed up the video card. I guess I have to go to the mac store again, and have my laptop go away for a week again. This will be the third time it has to get fixed since I bought it less than 4 months ago. Now I am regretting not getting a Dell XPS.

  • I want to get a new MacBook Pro for games like gmod

I want to get get a MacBook Pro retina 15 inches quad core  i7 intel iris 8 gb  for gaming I will be playing gmod a lot and I just wanted to know if it will run nicely on it or would it lag a lot on high settings or if I should upgrade anything.

The problem with game software is that even what you might not consider a hard core game will require a discrete video card. Now the Iris Pro is very impressive for integrated video, I have one sitting on my desk a work. Still, the question is whether game vendors will support it. If I were buying a computer for gaming 1) I'd want a discrete card and 2) I wouldn't get a notebook.

  • 2007 MacBook Pro Screen becomes distorted and Computer becomes unresponsive

    Hi,
I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this. This is hard to explain with words alone, but I will try: I'll be using my 2007 MacBook Pro with no problems, when all of a sudden the screen will start to flicker and the display will become distorted where everything seems like it is tapering into seperate small rectangles. If I am playing music through any application (iTunes, Safari, Ableton Live, Adobe Premiere, etc.) the music will continue to play and I can still move the mouse around but I cannot click on anything or stop the music and none of my keyboard brightness or volume commands will function. Basically it's a partial freeze. This is very troubling as it is becoming more and more frequent. I did drop my computer once a year and a half ago but have not had any trouble of this sort (or at all for that matter) until about 2 months ago, so I'm not sure if this is related. It happened to me twice before I upgraded to 10.6.4 from 10.4.11, only then it was more serious and when I rebooted afterwards it would give me that ominous gray screen with the restart logo and several languages saying I needed to shut it down. Now when it happens I can restart my computer just fine (assuming I force shut it down with the power button for 6 seconds), but sometimes when it restarts the weird screen effect I described will happen during start up and then go away once it is running again. If anyone has any idea what is causing this please let me know, this computer is very important to me, as I do 85% of my work on it. Help! Thanks!!!!
    Matt

    Welcome!
You may have the "nVidea Curse." Here is an Apple article explaining the issue and providing for free repair for a period to four years from data of purchase:

It applies to MBPs with an nVidea 8600M GT graphics chipset. Apple Store have a diagnostic test for teh problem.

  • Macbook Pro startup screen distorted

I have a 2 Ghz Intel Core i7 16GB RAM, Early 2011 - 15" Macbook Pro running OS X 10.8.3.  When I start it up, the startup splash screen doesn't fill the entire screen.  After a few seconds, the screen shows distorted colors and shapes, and then resizes and boots up normally.  Is this a known problem? Can this be fixed?

If the PRAM reset doesn't fix it, it sounds like a bad 10.8 update or a hardware issue.
Try to see if you can do a #8 here
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Make sure to reboot twice so EFI takes hold as that loads first before OS X .
You can install OS X on a external drive and boot from it, see if it's not a hardware problem.
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive

  • My 2010 Macbook Pro display is distorted upon startup and I can't login or see apple icon/progress bar.  How do I go about fixing it?  Thanks.

I have a 17" MAcbook Pro purchased late 2010.  Recently has developed some display problems, y'day ran in safe mode and it fixed it and I was able to login etc.,  This morning when I boot up, it shows display distorted and I can't see apple logo or progress bar etc., and am unable ot login.  I need to atleast be able to recover my files before I give it for fixing (if it needs to be repaired).  Any steps you folks recommend for me to run?  Any diagnostics or other tips?  If I run safe mode, it seems to hang after a while and it is hard to read the screen to know exactly where it is stuck.....as the display has problems.
    Thanks for your help.

there is an app called daisydisk on mac app store which will help you see exactly where the memory is focused and consumed try using that app and see which folders are using more memory

  • Sudden white screen on my macbook pro resulting in distorted image

After a sudden white screen, I tried to boot my macbook into recovery mode and the screen started to have some purple straps all over the place. Also, I noticed random distorted startup screen (the grey background and apple logo) and then would end up in a white screen or blue screen.
I pretty much tried everything from verifying and fixing errors on the hard drive to running AHT (apple hardware tests) and I am still not sure what caused the issue. After a dozen or so of reboots the computer seems to work fine but I don't really know if I should be worried or not. I am a bit worried that the video card might fail at some point and this is just the beggining.
Did anyone encountered anything like this before?

    Try resetting your SMC.
Resetting the SMC of an Intel-based portable Mac with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: This will not delete any data.
The SMC is responsible for controlling various system functions. None of your data will be deleted by resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Release the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
    I hope I helped.

  • Macbook Pro 13 Audio Distorted

Out of nowhere, any audio (iTunes, Youtube...etc) that I play on the macbook comes out normal initially and then approx. 7-10 sec in the audio starts distorting, slow downs, echoing and then completely goes out. The same thing applies when I plug in headphones. What could be the issue and how do I resolve this?
Could it be the speakers? Then again, why the issue still be noticeable when I plug in headphones? Or (hopefully, cause then it'd be easier to resolve) could it be the latest OS update?
I've tried the sudo killall coreaudiod command in terminal but to no avail. I've also resetted the PRAM as well as the SMC (because of the issue mentioned below) before. I'm unsure if that has done anything to help resolve the issues. One thing is I've noticed; the startup chime doesn't go away anymore If I mute/completely lower the volume prior to shutting down.
This is the 2nd issue I'm experiencing after the power button started failing. Now, I have to press and hold the power button for 20secs or so, release and press it once more before it turns on (if macbook is completely shut down).

Sorry i found the solution, it was the balance which was not in the middle..

  • Macbook Pro 13" Screen Distortion and Flickering

    Hi Guys,
please help me if you can, got this problem where the screen keeps flickering and distorting... got a couple of videos here, need some help!.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k5Dqj1KlnY
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhthT9XHIus&feature=channel (not so frequent)
it shouldnt bug me, but its a £1000 laptop which has problems?

That should definitely bug you! I'd go crazy.
Generic advice time: Looks faulty. First I'd start with making a full backup of your drive, then reinstall snow leopard fresh.
If you get no luck, then it's probably a hardware issue. If your laptop's new, take it back. If it's an old laptop but this is a recent development, you may have to get it repaired. Whether you do this through the apple store or a third party is up to you.
    Hope this helps

  • Macbook Pro jack Audio problem

Hi, suddenly the audio output from the jack of my macbook pro 13" is "distorted ". everything happened from one day to another. I did not do anything special, I tried to try different audio outputs to see that it was a cable problem, but as occurs with everything that I connect I'm afraid something has happened to my mac. What should I do? Thanks!

I found a temporary solution - killing the coreaudio process resets the audio and I'm good. But what causes it is still uncertain.

  • TS1248 trackpad stuck down on intel macbook pro

Any advice on help for my trackpad which is stuck down, 5 year old computer and has had no misuse

Try removing the battery. You have to make sure that your have your computer plugged into the mains, and that it doesn't become disconnected whilst you are using it without the battery installed.
Place the laptop back onto a flat surface (without the battery installed, but still plugged into the mains), and see if the fault has been rectified.
What happens, is that, over time, the heat generated by the MacBook Pro warps and distorts the battery casing. The battery is housed over the trackpad circuitry, so that as the battery casing warps, it presses up against the circuitry and causes all sorts of mayhem.
If you discover that this is the cause of your problem, the only remedy is to replace the battery.

  • MacBook + Dell Vs. MacBook Pro

    Greetings everyone,
I would like to know what would be better. Getting a MacBook (2.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, SuperDrive, 100GB HD) and putting a 256 MB Nvidia 7950GT in my Dell XPS (3.2 GHz P4, 1.5 GB RAM, 250GB HD) for $1900 or getting a MacBook Pro (2.16 GHz, 1 GB RAM, SuperDrive, 100GB HD, 256 MB ATI X1600 Pro) for $2300?
As far as what I do with a computer, it's basically a bit of everything. I play some games, do a bit of video editing (just iMovie stuff), some photo stuff, etc. I'm just unsure if adding a video card to a computer with a P4 processor is worth saving $500 or not, or if it will even out perform the MacBook Pro in games.
    Thanks.

The P4's were notably the worst CPU ever churned
    out by Intel
    Not exactly.
While the first incarnation (Willamette) was awful, the Northwood CPUs (especially with the 800Mhz bus and DDR400 RAM) were probably one of the best that Intel had released at the time, far outperforming comparable Athlon processors. (which were hotter and more power hungry then their Intel counterparts, and would spectacularly smolder and melt if their cooling solutions failed [unlikely but reflective of a poorly designed response to thermal runaway]) Intel lost that performance crown when AMD introduced the FX line of CPUs, and the Netburst microarchitecture petered out when Intel tried to go to 90nm with their Prescott core. Since then, Intel's CPUs have been relatively lackluster until the debut of the Core line of processors.

  • About to buy a Macbook pro

Well here is my question, i just made the switch from pc to mac in october. I bought a Macpro desktop and a Macbook but now i want a Macbook pro for games and what not, because my macbook does not have a decent video card. And i was wondering should i buy one now or when apple releases the macbook pro with leopard installed? and i keep hearing about alot of problems with the new core macbook pros is this true any advice would be awesome.
    thanks in advance!

coming from PCs it's easy to be scared of upcoming OS changes. if you were buying a PC before vista came out, it was indeed a good idea to wait and buy a machine that was totally set to go, with vista installed and working on it.
not the same thing for OSX going to leopard. apple did all the under the hood foundation work a long time ago with OSX, so new OS updates, even 'major' ones like leopard, are all pretty much smooth sailing.

  • Macbook Pro getting really hot and loud under stress.

To put it simply, i use my macbook pro for game development. Some of the programs/games i run on it are high quality and make my macbook pro (with a 750M installed) incredibly hot. Judging from the app (iStat) the average RPM's of the fans are around 2000rpm. When i have to render something, the macbook starts to get really really hot, and the fans start getting really loud. I checked the fans RPM and it shows that they are going at 6000rpm.
The average temperature when not doing things of the CPU and other components is around 35-50 degrees celcius. When i'm working and it has to render something, and i have to play/test my creation the temperatures go up to around 90 degrees celcius.
Is this safe? I don't want the inside of my brand new laptop to melt under the stress. Keep in mind, i bought one of these because it was suggested that mac's are the better option for graphics and design rather than PC.
If you look at the picture and see that my OS is not Yosemite, that is because i've seen many bad reviews that it can cause overheating. I'm trying to prevent that as much as possible with the workload i have to work with.
    Thanks for any help possible.
    My Specs = http://i.imgur.com/fIGlzcZ.png

I just got mine a week or two ago and I also have noticed how loud and hot mine gets. Mine also has the GT 750. The heat is normal enough but how loud it gets is very annoying.
I think I know why its so loud but cant say for sure. I think its one of those fans on the gpu with side fins rather than a normal fan. Ive had graphics cards before with those fans and they are louder than the normal fans when under load. Now I go for a card that has a couple of larger "normal fans" to keep it cool. Also these side fin fans would be better for a laptop as they will shoot the hot air directly out the back.
Im still not sure why the fan spins so fast when playing a simple game. Its understandable with a more demanding game.
Hopefully you know what I mean though im not explaining it that well.

  • Looking to buy new Macbook Pro...

I'm a grad student with only so much money to spend on a laptop, so I'd like to know whether I can add the upgrade graphics card and more RAMM memory later... oh, and how about GHz speed? Can I upgrade for the GHz speed as well later. The more important thing to me is the graphics card though. Thanks for the help. The only reason I'd want the upgrade graphics card is if I'd like to play some of the newest games at some point.
I will be buying the Macbook Pro 15.4" laptop with 2.53 GHz, 4 GB SDRAM DDR3, 250 GB serial hard drive and anti-glare screen.

Thanks for the answer. I do have a couple more. I currently have a Dell Inspirion 9100 with 3.20 GHz and what I think is a 9700 radon graphics card. Will my Macbook Pro 2.53 GHz dual 2 be faster? Oh, and will the 9400 graphics card in the Macbook Pro support games such as Diablo, Macgees Alice and Wonderland, various Myst games and Stronghold 2 (yes, it will be in PC mode because it's only available for PC and I will be buying the VMware 3)? Thanks again. I am really new to Mac, however, when I started college many years back, I had bought and loved the Mac Classic (which I still have and use from time to time .

  • Game froze my MacBook Pro, now I have internet problems-What should I do?

    Hi,
I recently bought a game to play on my macbook pro, it is Sims Castaway Stories for Mac by Aspyr.
My laptop meets/exceeds the requirements to play it.  It only uses little ram and hardrive space.
I installed it a few days ago, my laptop started to get really worked up 30-60 mins into playing the game.  My laptop was making A LOT of noise and got pretty hot, I could hear that it was making a lot of effort to ventilate the heat out and to keep my laptop cool.
About 5 hours into playing the game My laptop completely froze and I had to force shut it down and restart.
Everything seemed fine when I restarted it.  I played the game the next few days and it ran fine for over 5 hours.  However my laptop is still very hot and noisy every time I play the game, and even when I don't have the game open, but just the disc in.
When I have the game running and go on the internet the videos I watch are distorted, images are fragmented + oddly colored, pages load in computer code, and pages won't load occasionally.
I have the same problems with my internet when the game disc is not in my laptop. (disc out= no super hot and hyperventilating laptop problems)
I have even uninstalled the game completely and the internet problems are still there.
I use google chrome, but I have the same problems on safari.
My home windows pc has the same internet problems as well, my second windows pc does not.
Is this a bad internet connection problem or has this game damaged my laptop?
    What should I do?

The Internet is sent to you in packets with an error-detection code on them. Ones that come through with errors are rejected. Distortions and problems with display are caused by problems on your computer itself, not by bad data from the Internet.
Most games, including ones tied to the Internet, work your computer very hard. It will get hot. When it starts to get hot, the fans will go on high. Putting the DVD in the drive makes a motor spin it up and that causes heat as well.
Do you have enough RAM memory to support all the things you are doing at once? If not, your Hard drive will be on all the time to do Paging to simulate more RAM memory, and spinning its motor all the time will make your Mac really Hot.
To cool the underside by convection, at least 3/4 inch (20mm) space is needed underneath. A smaller space is not effective.
