Macbook Pro 17" Hi-Resolution LED widescreen  question

I'm thinking about purchasing a Macbook Pro but I was wondering, is it worth spending the extra bucks for graphics and video on the 17" with Hi-Resolution LED widescreen or is the Hi-Resolution LED widescreen meant for HD playback?

Wow, seems like this is a problem many people are dealing with and something Apple can't or won't fix at the moment. Wish I knew this before I ordered it. For more information here's a series of postings from a different forum. If you don't feel like reading it all, scroll to the bottom. That describes what I see on my High Res exactly!!
Anyone know if the resolution independence stuff made it into Leopard?

Not in a complete sense. It is there under the hood, available for
application developers to test with, but isn't turned on yet for the end
user because there are too many applications which can't handle it,
including many of Apple's ones.

Is there no way of increasing font size for native tool and menu bars
(whatever the term is)? On a 1920x1200 they go microscopic, and
workarounds aren't very satisfactory. Zooming or else flipping to
lower resolution seems to give fuzzy results, worse than a similar
laptop with a lower native resolution.
One of the problems seems to be a font smoothing algorithm. Put aside
the actual issue of font smoothing and whether you want it or not... I
believe I am talking about a side effect. Try turning off the "image
smoothing" buried deep in the sys-pref/keyboard/trackpad (of all
places). This seems to crisp up the font considerably - it looks
untidy if you zoom in, but without it (even unzoomed) it is as if a
greasy film all over your glasses and you can't focus at all. There is
also a sys-pref for small font smoothing which doesn't appear to work.
With hostile human factors for fonts, it just compounds the pain of
other eccentric factors. That stupid grey font that is used for
example in itunes is too low contrast. Similarly the bookmark bar of
safari is unreadable due to the darkening of the entire top part for
an active screen, which gives no contrast. "universal access" is
pretty useless or else overkillI, and I have searched for endless
"preference" screens to tweak these without much luck...

  • Problems connecting my macbook pro to my samsung led Tv

Hi. I try to present some pictures and videos by connecting my macbook pro to my samsung led Tv but my mac doesn't recognize the Tv (or it could be that my TV doesn't recognize the mac). What should I do?

I have problems too with some projectors and the DVI--VGA adapter that came with my MBP. The projector is recognized by the computer, but does not show any signal.
With the help of Stéphane Madrau, who has written the excellent tool SwitchResX, I found out that the projector reports that it takes digital input when I connect the MacBook Pro, but analog when I connect it to my 12" PBG4. From the DDC information (collected with SwitchResX):
    MacBook Pro, DVI--VGA:
    Input signal & sync:
    Digital
    PBG4, miniDVI--VGA:
    Input signal & sync:
    Analog input with: 0.700V / 0.300V
    Separate Sync
    Composite Sync
Given that the VGA cable is analog only, I would think that the MBP tries (or rather, does) output digital signals only, which don't make it into the VGA cable. If I find a solution I will post it here.
The clue was that the computer did not report any vertical scan frequencies for the external display, while it did so for a projector that worked.

My macbook pro displays a folder with a question mark and won't open. What does this mean and how can I fix it?

it means your HD and the software can't find each other, the following article tells how to troubleshoot this issue:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440
hopefully you have backup of your data since sometimes this means the HD is crashing.
if the article doesn't resolve the issue i would take the mac to apple store or service provider and have it looked at, the following link tells how to find one close to you:

    good luck!!

Well there are two or three causes of eyestrain with displays different people seem to have.
    1: Small type/UI elements
    2: Glossy screens
    3: Flicker rate
    1:
The higher pixel rate combined with the display set at the higher resolution is going to cause UI and type to be smaller and harder to see. In fact it's advised to set OS X to a lower resolouton so it upscales better to match the pixel of the higher display.
Reports coming in say watching HD 1920 x 1080 trailers on the anti-glare 17" is best as the pixel content matches the display almost fullscreen, where on the MBP-R it's upscaled and thus looks blurry.
HD content makers are NOT going to change all their video cameras to support 2880 x 1800 full screen, so in order to get a clearer image playing HD 1080 content, one will have to do so in a smaller window.
    2:
The new MBP-R dispalys are 75% less glossy, but not 100% less glossy like the anti-glare models so this can still cause some people problems. This can be lowered to under 1%, however I'm suspecting to do so would be considered giving up a military advantage to China where Apple gets it products made.
    3:
I don't know about the flicker rate if it's better or not on the MBP-R's than the previous screens.

  • My 13" Macbook Pro's screen resolution is messed up.

My 13" Macbook Pro's screen resolution is off. I restarted it yesterday and it has been bad since. For best quality I am having to put it on 1024 x 768 (not stretched) which the highest, but still not as good as original and not full screen. HELP PLEASE!

After about three restarts a new higher reolution option appeared (odd) and it is now fixed.

  • How do I hear audio from my Macbook Pro 2009 to my LED TV?

I recently received an adapter for my Macbook Pro 2009, Mini DisplayPort (Mini DP) to HDMI Female Adapter + HDMI Cable for my birthday.  I knew before receiving this adapter I needed something to transmit audio to my TV.  However, th 1/8' (3.5mm) to RCA stereo audio cable I purchased does not work. Does anyone have a suggestion on which cable I need to purchase next to make the sound component work when connecting my laptop to my Toshiba LED TV?

The Mac's audio output doubles as a optical Toslink stereo mini jack, just use a adapter to regular Toslink and plug the optical cable to your surround sound system. Fiddle with the sound settings to enable optical output.
Mac's pass surround sound through, they don't do any processing.

  • 13" MacBook Pro and Apple 27" LED Display Not Sleeping Properly

I recently purchased a new 13" MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,1) and a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display. When they are connected the computer occasionally has a problem being put to sleep. When clicking sleep, the monitor will take a little while to shut off, but in about 10 seconds, it will turn back on. Immediately when turning on, the image on the screen is quite scrambled (it does correct itself). Usually, if I attempt to put it to sleep multiple times, it will end up working. When it does go to sleep (correctly), the screen will turn off much faster than the times where it doesn't sleep.
Anyone else have a similar issue they found a fix to? When speaking to Apple support, they thought it was part of an issue with 10.6.6, however, the update to 10.6.7 did not solve the issue.
PS - I keep my MacBook Pro lid closed when using the display.

By the way, please be aware of a scam - iyogi
Online Technical Support - Call (AU Toll Free) 1-800-029-076.

I saw Apple support and called the number, it ended when I was asked to pay to fix my problem.
I'm not aware of the company, but from what you said I don't see how that's a scam. The advert clearly only says the call is free, not the support. Why should they give free technical support?

  • Macbook Pro 15 inch resolution on external 16:9 display issues

I just bought a Macbook Pro 15inch non-Retina display. I'm trying to connect it to an older Dell monitor I had that is 1600 by 900 resolution. I am trying to mirror the display but don't get a 1600 by 900 resolition when I look at my Macbook Pro display settings. I have a VGA connected to my monitor and macbook using the vga to mini display port. How do I get 1600 by 900 resolution? Do I need a bigger monitor?

  • MacBook Pro 15 Retina Install from TM question

I've been reading of display problems when waking up from sleep.  I have yet to install anything on the new machine.  I just picked up the 2.3Ghz today from Apple.  My question is it ok to install from a 2011 (Spring) Macbook pro time machine backup?  Or would it be better if I install applications from scratch and just reinstall the documents from the TM backup.
    Thanks

  • Macbook Pro Retina Screen Resolution Issues

I have just bought a retina display Macbook Pro (Early 2013) with OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion.
Before getting it, I did not realize what an effect it would have on the use of my existing programs, and had I known, I would have thought twice before switching from my non-Retina Macbook Pro. I have never had so many problems with a brand new computer. On my retina screen, programs such as Microsoft Office 2011, Adobe Creative Suite 5 and Acrobat Pro X run with an awful screen resolution and impossibile legibility. The pixelated graphics and image quality hurt my eyes, beyond the fact that I cannot see my lines, images and text properly in order to work with them.
In these programs, the "Open in Low Resolution" button is enabled permanatly and cannot be changed as it's option is ghosted out. I do not know how to make it look better or what to do. I cannot work using this low resolution and this issue has affected my productivity.

    nadia_d,
You have a new MBP you have 14 days to return/exchange, 90 days of free phone support, as well as 1 year at the store. Take advantage of this.

  • Unsatisfactory 15" MacBook Pro Native Screen Resolution

I recently purchased the latest 15" MacBook Pro and am disappointed with the native screen resolution (1280 by 800), in which the fonts are JUST a little too small.
On the Apple site, it lists 1440 by 900 as the native resolution for this model, but I have yet to see that option listed under System Preferences. There only "Native Screen Resolution" (just small enough to drive a person crazy), or "1440x800", so on and so forth.
What am I missing here? Has anyone else seen this on their models?

For the MBP, the highest resolution on your machine is the one you want. In your case, it's 1680 x 1050. Don't worry about "native"; in some cases, the setting is wrong, and it should in no way affect your computing.
I had a feeling that this was just the way the machine was built. I'm aware that it has no effect on the computing. I just wanted to bring up this issue because it's disingenuous from Apple's side and frustrating to a customer to list the aspect ratio specs on the site and not have the machine actually reflect that. Whatever is listed on the site should be what a person buys.
I am assuming that there is no fix or software update that would help correct this issue. However, i do want to make the comment that while this machine is great, I personally feel that it would be nice for future models to have the system fonts in the highest resolution to be just slightly larger. The current resolution for this MBP is set where it is just small enough to be hard to read. My two cents.
    Thanks for your help.

  • MacBook Pro won't startup - Folder with question mark appears

I have tried multiple times to startup my macbook pro (I am not sure if I have lion or not) and it will only come to a white screen. Sometimes an icon appears that is a folder with a question mark in the middle. I have an external hard drive, but everything is not backed up.
What is going on and what are some steps I can take to remedy this problem.
I have tried Command + R as well as Shift while starting up.

  • MacBook Pro A1286 Late 2008 WiFi Hardware Question

I'm working on a Late 2008 15" MacBook Pro model A1286. It had a plethora of issues, from broken trackpad, broken keyboard, broken display panel and a shot hard drive. It wasn't working when I got it in so I couldn't verify much. Upon fixing all of those issues and firing it up the WiFi is not working. The odd this is that the webcam uses the same cable, and that works just fine. Thinking it must be the card then, I ordered a replacement Airport card and put that in today, and the WiFi still doesn't work. What else could it be? Is it possible that only part of the cable would be bad for some reason? The owner says the wireless was working before the hard drive crash. The broken trackpad, keyboard and screen all happened prior, and they brought it in after the hard drive crashed, and had been using it like that for a while. Not sure what to do at this point... Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    owen-b,
Installing an SSD is very simple - just like installing a hard drive - all you need is a Phillips #00 screwdrive and a Torx T6 screwdriver. See the video here -> http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_15_unibody_hd/.
I prefer Crucial SSDs (probably because that's what I have!) and you can go to their website and look at the available drives. You can usually get a few bucks knowcked off if you purchase from Amazon.
Before you install the SSD, download Mavericks, quit before it tries to update and you'll have a file named "Install OS Mavericks.app". Get a 8GB+ USB thumb drive and use DiskMaker X to create a bootable installation drive. Hold down the option key with the USB thumb drive in place and elect to boot from it. Then use Disk Utility to format the SSD ("Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition. Quit Disk Utility and then install Mavericks.
    That'll do it!
