MacBook Pro 17" late 2009 - Black screen on boot, not even a grey screen

Got a monstrous problem.
Started up my MacBook Pro (bought in Feb. This year, core 2 duo 2.88GHz/4 Gb RAM - basically the top specced model.)
Booted up today, no grey start-up screen. No screen at all. Yet I can still log into Snow Leopard, but again no screen. Rebooted into boot camp, heard windows start. Managed to log in again no screen. Volume controls, keyboard illumination work. Just a black screen.
I have tried resetting PRAM, etc. with no success. Cannot use hardware test as the screen simply does not start.
Any ideas before I throw the effing thing from a 5th floor window in frustration?
Is this the Nvidia problem other folk have experienced?
I am tempted to ask for a new machine spending 2 months on and off with my previous MacBook Pro in and out of repair if this is a hardware problem that has been fixed in recent Macs.
Regards,
J

I had the same problem just now. My 15" MBP (6.2). I followed the following steps and it worked for me. I used another Mac in my house to use screen sharing to accomplish these things:
1) access the /private/var/vm/ directory on the nonworking computer from the working computer. This is invisble so you will have to press cmdshiftg in the finder and go to /volumes/YOURHARDDISKNAME/private/var/vm to get there or use an application that lets you view invisble folders like PathFinder.
2) delete the sleepimage file
3) delete the /system/library/extensions.mkext file
4) eject the drive (drag to the trash)
5) press the power button to turn off the non working computer
6) turn the nonworking computer back on normally(cross your fingers) then if it works,
7) open up the the terminal.app in /applications/utilities
8) type sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
9) make sure there is no sleepimage file again
That worked for me...hope it helps for you!

You are correct that the SMC reset procedure is slightly different from earlier MacBooks...

  • Problem installing Windows 8 via Bootcamp on MacBook Pro 13 (late 2009).

    Hello,
I've installed Windows 8 Pro on my MacBook Pro 13 (Late 2009) which does not support Windows 8. I've started installing Windows 7 via Bootcamp, then interupted the installation and pluged-in the Windows 8 Disk, and after formating the partition, I've installed Windows 8 64-Bit.
Here is the problem. The Windows works fine, BUT after restart when I hold 'Alt' and choose EFI Boot (Windows 8's partition), Windows 8 starts loading but then suddenly there is a white flash and it restarts again. So after shut down or restart I cannot boot it.
Do you think that this is because I do not have Bootcamp installed on the Windows 8?
I've downloaded the supported software for Windows 8, but when I click setup.exe, it is giving me the following error:
This version of Bootcamp is not intended for this computer model. I've been trying to install it for more than 78 hours, so I'll be extremely gratefull to whoever help me. Thank you in advance.
P.S. Mac OS X partition boots fine.

If it is really not possible, I get it. But there are plenty of people that are running Windows 8 on the same model, that is powerfull enough to run Win 8. I'm actually running it, but until shut down or restart . Can't I edit Info.plst file alternative for Windows 8 like I did to allow BootCamp to image burn my USB on my model? I mean my model is same as the next one. I can't see why the drivers for mid 2010, won''t work on mine...

  • My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update

My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update. It ran beta 5 great but failed on restart after beta 6 install. There is no cursor but I can hear the HDD spooling up. I have tried booting in safe mode, PRAM reset and SMC reset but nothing works. After the first 5 days of every now and then trying to start it, it started fine. I used the machine all day with no problems, it had rolled back the install and was back on beta 5. I decided to try the update again, the same thing happened and it has stayed black for over a week now. It wont work with a monitor either. Help!

    Hello Adam,
I would try instead of installing the beta software, to install the official build of OS X Yosemite from the Mac App Store to see if that gets you passed the no video issue when updating the beta software.

  • How to reset the SMC on macbook pro 15" late 2009

Does anyone know how to reset the SMC on the macbook pro 15" late 2009?
The instructions listed at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 does not work.
There are alot of posts in here about it, but I cant find any solutions on who to do this on the late 2009 model that have the build-in battery.

Turn it off, connect the power supply then hold down shift/control/option while holding down the power button for 5 seconds - the power supply light will go off and on to show it's done.

If you replaced the Ram in your machine at any time, you may not have been aware of the fact that Apple computers have always been a little picky when it comes to 3rd party Ram.  Apple computers have always run very well on 2 different brands.

  • How do I Reinstall Yosemite on MacBook Pro 15 " late 2009

After upgrade ️to Yosemite the AirDrop and iMessage on my MacBook Pro 15" (late 2009) do not work. I've been advised  to reinstall to Yosemite may help, but I don't know to do it.  Can anyone help please.

You need an internet connection, and the process takes a long time. Directions are here:

  • Late 2011 17inch MacBook Pro OS X Mavericks Black Screen on reboot

I'm typing this on a Windows XP PC
I upgraded to OSX Mavericks from Mountain Lion a couple of days ago, The upgrade went OK and my MacBook functioned OK.
Today I decide to re-boot it. All I see now is a black screen. The keyboard backlight comes on, but if Itry to type in my password (blind) it just makes the alert sound. I have attempted to use Command R on reboot, but this is not giving me anything - I'm probably not pressing it at the right point in the boot process.
I bought a Mac because it was easier to repair and more reliable than the alternative....
I haven't a clue what to do next - anyone have any ideas? The Mac is vanilla, it has no external devices attached and most of the software on it is Apple.
    Tried Safe Boot, no joy,

I have the same problem. I went to the Apple Store and they say that the LCD screen is faulty and needs replacement (500 pounds - 800 USD).
I'm completely devastated by Apple's low quality and terrible customer service.. In my third year the motherboard, the hard drive, the charger and the screen failed. Lesson learnt, I will never buy again Apple junk. The most expensive computer I've ever bought has been the worst.

  • Recently upgraded my macbook pro 13 late 2009 to an ssd but only getting a quarter of the speed

Hi, i recently upgraded my macbook pro 13 inch to a OCZ VERTEX 3 240gb ssd. The drive is supposed to be able to have write speeds of 500mb/s and read speeds of up to 550 mb/s but when i run a speed test on the disk im only getting a max write speed of around 105 mb/s, and read speed of 137mb/s ish, now the negotiated speed is only 1.5gb/s I have trim enabled, and i have tried changing the link speed but with no luck. The drive is rated for 6gb/s also. The drive is not in the hard drive bay because my hard drive cable is broken, i have it in the optical bay right now, could someone please help me or tell me how to make the drive at least go up to sata 3 speeds,

The 2009 MBPs were built with a very cheaply made HDD to LB cable. So I bet if you change that cable you will see more speed from that SSD.

  • Mid-2010 macbook pro has started having "black screens"

apple store diagnosed as "software failure".  they wiped it clean & gave me instructions to reinstall/restore from backup at home.  successfully reinstalled but another black screen after about an hour.
i am NOT a computer person so i need kindergarten language/instructions/suggestions (fitting, as i was a kinder teacher).  i am a 6 hour roundtrip to the apple store, living in a rural town after 35+ years of living in an area of 6 million with MANY apple stores close by.
has this happened to anyone else & if so, can you tell me how you corrected it?  again, VERY elementary language please!
    thank you!
    p.s.  i have since upgraded to OS X 10.9.2 & while it's listed that i have vmware fusion (i do), i don't use it...

You may have the mid-2010 problem. There's an issue with the graphics module on that machine. There was a program in place to replace the motherboard within 3 years of purchase, but you're probably outside of that. Some folks have supposedly gotten theirs changed outside of that period, so you can try. There's a very specific test Apple has for this called the VST, which should detect the problem. I don't think all the Genius Bar folks are aware of this issue, so it's best to ask for it specifically. Take along a copy of your kernel panic report if you're getting one.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
What you can do to use it is download gfxstatus from http://gfx.io and force the graphics to Intel. That will lessen the panics at the expense of graphics speed.
You may be eligible for a depot repair, which is a flat rate of about $310. Ask at the Genius Bar.

Your kernel panic is being caused by a fault, of some kind, on your GPU.
If I were you, I would make an appointment at your local Apple Store/AASP and take you computer and a print out of the kernel panic with you.
    Good luck,

  • MacBook Pro 13'' (late 2011) blacks out all of a sudden?

It's been a couple weeks now.. all of a sudden while browsing the internet or during other regular stuff, the screen of my Macbook blacks out. I press Esc several times and also the keyboard lights out. Then it starts working back normally as if it went on stand-by. This started after a while I installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and at first I thought, having overwritten the previous OS, that the whole thing might depend on that. But then I completely re-installed the system and it happens at least once a day. Anybody else experiencing this and has anybody found a way out of this thing?rn is that
My concern is that it might be a symptom of a hardware malfunction :S

  • Stuck pixel on Macbook pro 15" Late 2008 LED screen w/applecare

Greetings I was researching and I know that Apple cover warranty for stuck pixels, and also I was researching about what stuck pixels are, so I take my mac to a certified apple center where I can process warranties and the manager told me that those were not stuck pixel but damaged pixels caused by contusions or misusing, but i was researching a lot and i bet those are stuck pixels, you can see them more bright on white backgrounds. So, how can i demostrate that those are stuck pixels or what can i do? the warranty expires on September and Im very worried about my screen.

Thats what i said, there is no way i can cause that damage, because i treat my mac like a baby, always in a sleeve and in a bag.
Actually Im in the Dominican Republic and there are other repair center but like a 80 miles from me, so I think i dont have the time to go there cause my job.
I have a Express Lane Case to call Apple in USa but i dont know if it will help.
