Macbook Pro 17 shuts down in minutes even when battery is full

Hi, this has been going on for a while, i took it to a Apple Service Center in Barcelona Spain with a friend who had the same problem, well, her MBP turned back on with a black screen and they replaced the video card for free, and when they looked at mine they said it was not the video card Apple recalled that was a problem but the battery, DVD player, they basically described the logic board which is what they replaced on my friends but refused to service it even though i have several years or some time left now, i got it in Sept 2006.
Anyone know if there is a solution or recall on this problem please do advise.

If we're talking about the MBP 3,1, then you could not have bought it in September 2006 because it was first released in June 2007. If you actually bought it in September of 2007 and have 3 year Applecare, you should still be covered, even if your logic board etc. problems are not the ones in the NVIDIA program. I know, because I have exactly the same MBP bought in September 2007.
Is it possible that the Apple Service Center was not aware that you had 3 year Applecare? The NVIDIA program is good for 3 years after the purchase of the computer, even if there is no 3 year Applecare. If they thought you were out of warranty (or if you actually are) then there wouldn't be coverage for anything other than the NVIDIA problem.
Did they diagnose a battery problem? If so, the cure may be a new battery. Check in the System Profiler and see what it says.
Even if you are under warranty, they will likely not replace the battery for you unless it is clearly defective.
Good luck!
Thanks for corrrecting the year, yes your right about it, its a 3,1
The apple service place claimed that there was nothing wrong with the video card, they said that the problems was the DVD player, BT, battery and possibly the logic board itself but for that they would have to charge to test further, the test was free and the bill was over 500 euros, sounds un fair to me.
Me and a friend have identical computers and both had identical symptoms, the only difference between them on the day we took them there was that i have a USA keyboard and she has a Spanish one, my battery is a bit bloated on one side as well, but even after putting her battery in mine and seen that it still shut off in ten seconds after unplugging the mag-safe the apple care store only slapped me a bill for 500 euros in parts which they replaced in hers due to damages from the video card and telling me it is up to apple to authorize this recall and they probably will not until it dies like hers, so i said in the meantime your asking me to keep replacing parts on my expense that that where damaged from something your recalling even though you know why it happened in the fist place and acknowledged it publicly by offering a recall program.
Its scaring me know, i am forcing myself to use it more so the screen dies before its too late if its not already, i would like them to replace the parts they tested faulty with the acceptance that the battery since it still works but looks fat on one side.
The best part is the dvd player still burns and plays dvds, and bt works.

  • Macbook pro shuts down two minutes after start up

    Hi
Can anyone help with a problem on my Macbook Pro. I have had it for two days and loaded all of my info and set up everything as I would like it and it froze.
I waited and waited and in the end had to power down. When I restarted it I get the spinning wheel for about two minutes then it just shuts off the power. I have tried to start in safe mode etc to no avail.
I feel so unlucky with Apple as month ago I bought myself a new Imac and within three weeks the hard drive failed. They have replaced it with a new one but now this problem is making me feel unsure about Apple am I just unlucky? Thank you

  • My MacBook Pro Shuts Down 5 Minutes After I Unplug It, Whats WRONG!?!?

Recently, whenever my Macbook Pro is ever unplugged it shuts down in less than five minutes. It works absolutely fine when the power source is plugged into the wall. Do you think i have a faulty battery? Are there other Possibilities? I have searched around and it seems like people who have the same, but less extreme experiences-have faulty batteries...
    Thanks for the the help!

Defective battery. I know some folks with early MBPs that had this problem, and it was a bad battery in those cases. Call AppleCare. Assuming it's in warranty, they should ship you a replacement battery with a mailing label to return the bad one.

  • PowerBook G4 shuts down without warning even when battery is over 60%

My powerbook has started to shut down without any warning - even if the battery is over 60% charged. The battery is the second (being sent free by apple under the replacement programme). I cannot restart until I have inserted the power cable.
I have tried to reset the PMU - but, following the instructions from apple support ('after shut down simultaneously press Shift - ctrl - option - power, wait 5 secs then press power button') does not work - PMU does not seem to reset. Apparently, when the PMU has been reset, the time and date change and need reseting - but this does not happen - and mine still shows the current date time after attempting a PMU reset.
so - still the Powerbook still shuts down working on a nearly full battery. Battery info seems ok.
I think this is a software problem - any ideas?

Hi, Pieterrr, and welcome to Apple Discussions. No, my post above is absolutely not an official (or unofficial) statement from Apple. These are user-to-user forums. I'm just another Powerbook user like yourself; I have no connection with Apple. Apple employees very rarely post in these forums, and Apple policies are never announced here.
What I wrote is a personal view and recommendation based on reading all the posts in the 15" Aluminum Powerbook forums for a while now. I've posted very similar comments many times before, and some (not all) owners of prematurely-old replacement batteries have succeeded in persuading Apple to replace them again after I suggested trying to do so.

  • Macbook pro shuts down during reboot after flat battery

Hi, I have a macbook pro (early 2011) And it went flat two nights ago whilst watching a movie. It was plugged in but I've been having charger issues. Anyway, now that it's fully charged, whenever i turn it on it gets to the apple logo with a progress bar (restoring the previous session maybe?), but then shuts down. I've tried a few times and its the same everytime.I suspect that it's trying to restore the last session (the progress bar - I cant recall whether that happens normally) and running into problems because of the flat battery episode. Can a session restore be cancelled?
I can still boot up the windows partition by pressing the option button during start up, its just the mac partition that wont boot. Also, I am still running Snow Leopard (what it came with, though with all updates).any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • MacBook Pro shuts down and won't charge, battery light on the side is off completely?

    Hey guys,
So about 20 minutes ago, I walked over to my macbook pro ('17) to plug in my phone charger. The top was already open, so I didn't have to pull it up. I clicked the touchpad to turn it on, and it turned on for literally half a second, and turned black with a bit of a static noise I believe. As if it blew a fuse.
So I look on the side of the computer where you can press that little button and a bunch of lights will turn on according to battery life, and nothing. Not one light turned on. I got this computer fixed a month ago with a replaced battery, screen, graphics card I believe, and operating system.
What happened?? It won't charge or turn on. Is there any chance I can revive this or is it toast?

Hi, I am having the same exact problem! Anyone who know what to do?

  • MacBook Pro shuts down when i close the lid

    Hey,
My MacBook Pro shuts down when i close the lid.
It started to do this one or two times, but now it is every time.
I have the latest battery update, so this should not be the issue here..
    Any sugestions??
I have started to suspect the it might be some faulty conecctions or somthing..

If it's unable to go into the proper sleep state for some reason then it will do that.
Run /Utilities/Console and click 'All Messages' top left then close the lid, wait a minute then open it again - if it's shut down then reboot and open Console again and check the latest log lines looking for 'sleepimage' - it should give you an indication of what happened/didn't. If you're not sure what it all means post _just those lines_ here.

  • MacBook Pro shuts down when I close lid. How can I prevent it?

MacBook Pro shuts down when I close lid. How can I prevent it?

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • My macbook pro shuts down OSX and all my programs when the lid is closed

    Hi,
I am having a problem. My macbook pro shuts down OSX and all my programs when the lid is closed. I close the lid, and then I hear the shutdown music and then when I open it again it automatically restarts OSX and all my windows and programs are closed, any info gone.
This doesn't happen all the time. Just once a day or maybe twice a day. It seems like it happens basically when I have my computer just the way I want it, to keep an eye on things for the day.
I just recently switched to a mac and while somewhat savvy, I am not a programmer or techie, but it seems to me that when I shut the lid, it should do the same thing every time.
I have a intel core 2 duo 17 inch macbook pro with 2.33 processr and 2 gig ram, if that helps.
I am in alaska and there is no genius bar here and I am hoping to figure this out before I begin bugging our local independant mac store about this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Lylah

    Ahhh, enlightenment!
That would make sense. What I usually do, after closing the lid, is to wait for the apple to turn off and then set it down on it's side leaning it against the side table. I will try to wait for it to indicate that it is fully asleep before I move it next time. Personally, I prefer my computer to NOT fall asleep at all, but I am told it is not an option. Apparently this function is hardware related accoring to my local mac shop. They tracked it down for me because I hated this feature when I first bought my computer and was trying some way around it.
The shutdown music I was refering to was that music the mac makes when shutting down, which doesnt usually occur when it goes to sleep, unless it is malfunctioning like this.
What does resetting the pmu do? (what is a pmu as well?)
    Thank you very much.

  • My MacBook Pro shuts down when i connect a USB cable.

My MacBook Pro shuts down when  i connect a USB cable, only when its a 30 pin apple cable. Well one USB shuts it down and the other one doesn't work at all.
it only happens when i use an apple cable. It has no problem with my external drive nor with other things.
Ps. i did use different apple cables and they all shut it down.

What are you connecting? iPad, iPhone, what?
When you say a 30-pin Apple cable do you mean a Lightening to USB cable?
    Little more info needed...

  • My macbook pro shuts down automatically

    Hi,
My macbook pro battery condition has been showing that it needs to be replaced soon. Ever since I knew my battery was weak, I started using my macbook by always connection it to the power adapter that way the power source would be from adapter. Since last two days, while in use macbook pro shuts down on me automatically. It never said shutting down or anything like that. The screen just went blank instantly and when i checked the battery indicator lights, all of the battery is drained. When I presses the power button it started and then instantly shut down again. After few mins of  repeating, I am finally able to see that my computer is getting turned on. But this issue repeats almost on a daily basis since the last three four days. Even if my battery went bad, I should be able to use my computer by connecting it to the power adapter, right ? or do I have to mandatorily replace battery for my computer to work ? please help.

My girlfriends Macbook Pro shuts down at the Apple Logo....
    1)I start the computer
2)It loads to the apple logo
3)A progress bar shows and loads about 5% then it dissappears and a few seconds later the macbook pro shuts down.
    Any solutions?
If not, is there any way for me to reinstall the os without losing any files such as(any of her pictures, music, etc)?

    Hi S,
See if you can run Repair Disk: Boot frominstall disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down c key andkeep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screenselect the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in themenu bar > open Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the leftside> click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’thappen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directoryis damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damagedHD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HDitself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, andrestart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > DiskUtility and run Repair Permissions.

  • Macbook Pro shutting down. Hardware error code 4MEM/62/40000000:0x7f537f90

Macbook Pro shutting down. Not the same action making it shutdown. Anywhere from being online to attaching a photo to an email to working in Word or Photoshop. Even after it's closed and not being used. I come back to it being shut off and saying it had to restart because of a problem. I ran the Hardware check and got the Hardware error code 4MEM/62/40000000:0x7f537f90.
I must say I am quite disappointed. I have used Mac for work but had a PC since day one, and I JUST got this Macbook Pro in Dec. I was delighted that Mac usually didn't have as many problems with viruses etc as PC. And now last couple days, constantly shutting itself down. The closest store to me is a few hrs away. I am in South Dakota, store is in Minnesota Any help would be appreciated.

Can you post a screen shot of About This Mac -> (More Info) -> System Report -> Memory and click on each DIMM and post the bottom right pane. You can also do the same without a screen shot using just text version using the following highlighted command in OSX Terminal. The output is also listed.

  • My 15" Macbook Pro, shuts down by it self (Random occurrence).

My 15" Macbook Pro, shuts down (randomly) by it self, some times it will not turn on, and some other times (very rarely) the fans go on “very loudly” the second I turn it on. But the computer, does not turn on at all, even with the battery fully charged and the fans runing full blast.
Some other times, it will not wake up. It will only turn on or wake up if connected to the power adapter, even if the battery is fully charged.
I have already reset (a couple times) de firmware, the smc and he pmu and the problem persists.
Al this goes on randomly and unpredictably. Some times it works just fine for 4 or 5 days and the suddenly something happens.
I also think that some times the computer runs extremely hot.

    15' MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have the same thing happening with a new macbook I bought my wife and I called apple today and after going back and forth between apple care and apple customer service they are shipping me out a new replacement macbook as it is less than 30 days since I bought it. I am waiting for their email with the Fed ex info so I can send this one back and then they will send out the new one.
If it is still in warranty I suggest you call Apple customer service and let them know how bad it is and insist on a new one!
This one also reboots at the slightest movement and it took me several tries to finally log in on it tonight to delete all the user accounts before I send it back!
Hopefully the replacement one is glitch free!
