Macbook pro 17 starts but then just turns off

My 17 in macbook pro starts with the chime, shows the apple, but then turns off before it goes any further. This happens whether using just the battery or just the power adaptor or both.
More info: Below the apple symbol, there appears the spinning icon and below that an approximately three-inch empty bar that starts to fill up with black from left to right but only gets a fraction of an inch before the computer shuts down. I assume that filling bar is indicating the beginning of the start-up process.
I can 'slave' the computer to another working one and see all my data and so forth. But on its own it simply shuts down.
I have tried starting in 'safe mode' but the same thing happen, with all the same start-up icons and then it shuts down. I have tried holding down command, option and P and R together. Same result.
Any suggestions?
What is my problem?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    Howdy AJBA,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.
To troubleshoot this issue where your iPhone will get to the Apple logo and then restart again, please follow the directions outlined below.
If your device gets stuck during startup
When starting up, you might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time, or your device might restart again. Try these steps:
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
    Get more help
If you still need help after trying the steps above, contact Apple Support.
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
    Take care,

  • Macbook pro starts but won't open

I have a problem with my macbook pro - everytime I press the power on button it starts up and the apple and timer come on and you can hear it whirring but then it turns off and restarts again and the same thing happens? Could someone help me?
    Thank you
    Emma

I'll quickly butt in before I go to sleep
The Mac keeps OSX and your settings and data separate, so an Archive and Install replaces the old system folder with a new one, and then copies all of your settings etc so that the new one works as the old one did. It should look like it did before - although you'll have to run software update to update the new system.
The old system folder is preserved just in case you need to access it - it's a good idea to make sure the new one is working fine before deleting it. You may well need the Leopard dvd to get the archive and install option - you can't do it going from Leopard to Tiger.
    Cheers.

  • HT3964 I have a macbook pro and it randomly will turn off

I have a macbook pro and it randomly will turn off.  This happens when the computer is plugged in and when it is not.  The condition of the battery says: good.

I borrowed someones charger and after 5 to 10 minutes of charging it turned on.  The charger light came on amber and was amber during the entire charge and has been green since.  Unlike my charger which would only come on green, or very very dim green no matter what since the batter has died completely.  Do you think that this is definitely the problem or is there anything I should check while I have it on and running?

    2. I'm getting the idea you now want to use your old "useless" battery.  Why, if it's useless?

  • My late 2007 MacBook Pro starts but all the screen does is flash once then go black.

My late MacBook Pro 07 blinks then goes black, I just replace the hard drive. What should Ido

There is a known issue with the Nvidea GeForce 8600M GT video chipset in that model. Nvidea sold Apple and other companies bad chips that failed usually from heat issues. The only fix is a complete logic board replacement, and I found new, known-good boards are hard to get.
Apple had a repair program that fixed this at no cost for four years from data of purchase; it expired in Dec 1012. Mine died at 5-1/2 year after purchase. You should plan on getting a new computer as the chances of finding a proper replacement board are now getting thin.
Some people may suggest using an external dispaly but that will not work with this failure mode.
I was able to start mine in FireWire Target Disk Mode and connected it to my iMac. I could see and recover files.

  • MacBook Pro boosts up but then automatically turns off

So I was just sitting browsing the Internet, online shopping and stuff. All of a sudden my computer went black, but the light in the corner said it was still on. I held the power button to restart it. It turned off and I waited a few minutes. When I restarted it, the boot up screen came on with the apple and a loading bar. Once the bar finished loading the computer turns off. I keep trying to turn it on but the same thing keeps happening. Someone please help! I don't know how to fix it!

    SMC RESET
Shut down the computer by pressing and holding down the power button.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
    PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer by pressing and holding down the power button.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Macbook pro 15" and 17" display turns off whilst working then.......

I have 2 macbook pros. One 17" and the other 15" both are the non unibody ones. The 15" had this problem a while ago but my 17" never did it until today and then it did about 5 mins ago.
Whilst I am working (never seems to happen when I am not using it) the display turns off whilst working. The power light remains constant (ie:- not fading in and out when asleep). But here is the strangest thing. The mac repetitively makes the same noise as if it was ejecting a disk. Has anybody else had this? Know a cure? I recently upgraded to snow leopard but don't think this is a software issue.

I got the same problem with mine, 15". I bought it refurbished from apple store. I had this problem when i bought it then nothing happened for 4 months. But now my MBP has started doing it again. And i don't think it's a software issue. My display switch on after few sec, or 1-2 mins it's depends, and it's pretty random. i'm a bit of worry

  • How do I fix my MacBook Pro that continues to abruptly turn off, no matter what I am doing? Even after deleting items/trying resolution methods?

How can I fix my MacBook Pro? I have a relatively recent model of the MacBook Pro. I’ve been running Mavericks.
For the past few days, it has been randomly clicking off by itself, I guess crashing. I would be online or just doings on it, sometimes nothing at all, and the screen would go black, the computer would turn off. Then, I would proceed to try to turn it back on, and it won’t turn on for several minutes, no matter what buttons you push. I tried doing an SMC reset for myself. It did not help much. I deleted all my personal files, including plug-ins, especially flash player. I thought that helped, but the computer proceeded to turn off minutes later. Then, out of frustration, (as I have done twice or so before since having the computer) I did what may be called a factory reset for my computer. I erased the current operating system information/memory in disk utility, and then went on to reinstall OS X. This was working fine, and then, a few minutes into the downloading process, my computer turned off once again.
Now, I have no system to operate on. I keep turning the computer back on to try to do it again. But now, the computer tries to do a remote or internet recovery, and tries to re-download an operating system using my WiFi. I’m sure this would be successful, but the computer can’t function for more than a minute or two without crashing/turning off.
I am fairly certain that my power button is NOT stuck.
I did earlier notice the fan making noise, before doing the SMC reset.
The computer did seem to say there was no batteries available at one point.
(But all of this was okay after some point, and I was just doing the reset to try to correct the turning off the system was still doing)
A week or two ago, I did have a glitch where my desktop picture was flashing and acting weird, and other functions on my computer keyboard not working, like volume, keyboard brightness, etc. But I did fix it.
I have not ever had much on this Macbook pro. I do not download applications. I do not store nearly any files on the computer. I usually only use the flash player plug-in. This computer is only used for doing work/business, and for personal use online.
I can’t see why I would have so many problems.
Is it possible that erasing the memory twice or so before is causing an error or issue in the drive?
What is the root of this problem, and how can I fix it on my own?
I can’t really make any progress on the computer since it turns off after only a minute or two no matter what you are trying to do.
    What do I do now?

    kapots3v4,
if your MacBook Pro doesn’t stay active long enough to perform an OS X Internet Recovery, then you should make an appointment at your nearest Apple store or Apple-authorized service provider to have them diagnose what’s ailing it.

  • I hear my 2010 17" Macbook Pro starting but no picture on screen. HELP!

I have a 2010 17" macbook pro with no upgrades besides software updates, instillation and small normal things like those. I left it on one night when i fell asleep listening to pandora (internet radio). The next morning i connected the charger to it and tried turning it on. I heard the top left part of the key board (opposite to the cd drive) come to life but couldn't hear the cd drive boot up. Neither the keyboard or screen light up either. I tried changing the RAMs but that was't the case. Any help?

Is the small "sleep" light at the front blinking or pulsing slowly, or off?
It would have gone into sleep mode automatically when the battery falls below a certain point.  Sometimes they need to have a little charge in addition to the power adapter before you can wake them up (by pressing Return, not by pressing the Power switch).  Replacing the RAM in the middle of this state complicates things.
You might try a Force Power Off by holding the power down for 10 seconds, wait a bit, then power up again.

  • Macbook pro with retina display keyboard Turning off

Hello everyone im having a problem with my Macbook pro it's my first mac so i dont know about it a lot sorry for my bad english and the problem is that after using it for like 2-5 Hours the keyboard turns off so i have to restart macbook so it works again I dont know why it happend but i usally clean it with some water when it get dirty not a lot of water just alittle bit but i dont think it's the problem because after restarting it it works fine

SystemUIServer is a background process that controls some of the user interface. Try opening Activity Monitor, in your Applications>Utilities folder and, in the upper right hand corner, copy and paste SystemUIServer. See how much of your CPU % that it's using. There might be a memory leak with one of the applications that you're running - though I've never seen it with PS CS6 and/or Safari. If it's using even 1% of your CPU, quit the process (it will relaunch).
If you're still running Lion, as your profile says, I would try upgrading to Mountain Lion to see if some - if not all - of your random log-off issues stop. 10.7.4 is not really very stable with the 2012 MBPs and I see a number of processes running that are giving you fits. ML may recitify most of them.
Don't really know what else to tell you - perhaps someone else can come along and comment about some of the other items in your log.

  • My Macbook Pro (2010, 10.9.5) turns off by itself randomly

    Hi all
My Macbook Pro (mid 2010, 2.53 GHz, ram 4GB, Intel Core i5, Mac OS 10.9.5) turns off randomly while I am working. The screen turns black and I get a message that my "mac was turned off due to a problem". It turns on again and all seems normal. I haven't lost anything (yet), but it happened three times in the last 10 days and I am getting very nervous. Last time it happened I was working with MS PowerPoint, MS Office, Preview and Firefox. I repaired disk permissions, restarted and I am preparing to empty the system cache. I have Avast-antivirus installed on my mac. Any other suggestions?
Does anyone else experience the same problem?
    Thanx i advance
    Stavrinski

Thanx for the prompt answer. I checked the link and it could be the case. But my machine is 4 years old and- if it is a hardware issue- is not covered for repairs from Apple
I really don't want to mess with Apple service, it is expensive and takes an eternity...
Followed your tip and uninstalled Avast, although it has repeatedly located and blocked malware on my mac...

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro 13 in 2011 not turn off after upgrading to Lion?

I upgraded to Lion when it came out, but I tried to run a PowerPC only game and the entire system crashed. I was then prompted to reinstall lion, so I did so, but after reinstalling it, it doesn't completely turn off. I click powerdown and it goes to a gray screen where it looks as though it's loading something, but will just stay on this gray screen until the battery dies out. There is no responsed to clicking with the track pad, nor to keys. Any ideas?

Boot to the Lion Restore disk (hold down option key when rebooting) select Disk Utility and then Repair Disk.

  • Macbook Pro with Retina Display suddenly turned off and can't turn on

I've been very happy with this new baby, for about a week now. It never gave me any problem. Then tonight it suddenly died, without any sign. Then I couldn't turn it back on again, no matter what tricks I tried. Is there any solution besides bringing it back to the Apple store tomorrow morning?
Very frustrating for an old Apple fan... I don't want to waste a couple of hours trying to fix a tech problem on a brand new Macbook Pro...

Well unless you want to go through the hassle of waiting for a replacement unit you can try a few things on your own.
Make sure it is plugged in and charging (Orange LED light will indicate it is charging Green means it is fully charged)
Once it is plugged in make sure everything else is unplugged
The only thing plugged in should be the power adapter
On the left hand side of your keyboard press down and hold the Control Shift and Option Keys
While you are holding down those three keys hold down the power button as well
Hold down all 4 of these for 10 seconds
    After 10 seconds let go
    Try turning your mac on
    If this works problem fixed!
If this does not work try calling 1-800-MYAPPLE (You get 90 days of free complimentary phone support on your product)
If you purchased AppleCare you have 3 years of it and you should have this number on hand it can really help you out
I always advise friends and family to purchase applecare if they plan on having their product longer than a year
You will get 3 years of phone support as well as hardware support
That means if you have any questions or anything goes wrong just call Apple
It also means if your computer breaks it is covered! Meaning no out of pocket expenses unless it is water or accidental damage
You may really want to look into purchasing applecare
