Macbook Pro 2.16 (late 2006) and Seagate Momentus XT 320gb. Does it work?
I would like to upgrade my macbook pro 2.16 C2D (late 2006) with a new hard drive like the Seagate Momentus Xt SSD Hybrid 320gb.
Somebody told me that the hard drive is not compatible with my mac as it supports just 160 GB 5400 RPM or 200 GB 4200 RPM hard drives.
Can anybody tell me if it is true or not? If yes any suggestion of HD?
I already placed the max of ram (3gb, unfortunately) and the hard drive represent the last chance to have a speed boost before a new purchase
Many thanks.
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
As far as I know, there is no intrinsic limitation on the size of the hard drive you can install other than possibly the 9.5 mm height requirement. WD and some others have a 1 TB hard drive which is 12.5 mm tall, and it will only fit in a 17" pre-unibody Mac. The old G3 processor has a limit of 128 GB as I recall, but as far as I know there are no capacity limits on G4 processors or anything since.
If Apple replaces the drive, they will only replace a drive with one that could have originally shipped with it, which would be a 120 GB, a 160 GB, or a 200 GB 4200 RPM drive for the 2.16 C2D. So they would not be willing to install anything larger. This may be where someone got the idea that you couldn't install anything else.
However, there is no reason why you can't.
I recently replaced my original 250 GB 4200 RPM drive with a 500 GB 7200 RPM WD Scorpio Black, and it's working just fine. I see no reason why you couldn't replace your drive with a 320 GB or even a 500 GB Seagate hybrid. I've only heard good things about this drive and know of no reason why it wouldn't work.
Good luck!

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

I have a 2006 15" Macbook Pro with a broken Superdrive and my external USB one just quit working
Why can my LG Portable Super Multi Drive (GP08NU6B) burn discs, but not read them? Right after I burn a DVD successfully, I stick it back in the drive and it says "The disk you have inserted is not readable by this computer" I have a 2006 15" Macbook Pro with a broken Superdrive, and this external disk drive is the only optical drive that worked via USB. This external drive was bought in 2010 and worked fine up until a month ago. This is supposed to be a Plug and Play device, and LG assures me the drivers are already included in Mac OSX, yet it seems somehow my Macbook lost the drivers and it won't let me watch DVDs now or recognize any discs at all!
How can I find and somehow reinstall the firmware for this optical drive?Sounds more like a hardware issue to me.

Macbook Pro 2.16 late 2006 fans ALWAYS running at 6000rpm from boot and on
OK..
So, I've read most of the help documents already on this issue .. and I can't seem to find a solution from anything that works for me. No, I do not have anything running that takes a ton of CPU, no, nothing in Activity Monitor shows up taking an ungodly amount of CPU (actually, nothing is really taking anything ....), Yes, all of my updates are installed, and no, my temperature sensor seems not to be broken.
I haven't done the startup test from the DVD yet, but judging from several fan control applications (such as Fan Control, the pref. panel.. or SMC Fan Control, the app) my sensors are working just fine. One of my fans needs to be replaced sometime in the near future (bearings are going out for the second time and it has a horribly annoying whine to it), but I know that the fan is still working quite effectively in cooling, by temp of the computer to touch and by the sensors. I would love any ideas that are out there as the whine from that fan is driving me nuts and killing my already poor battery life.
Thanks in advance!!!!
-MI think Evan's point was that if you have used fan control software there could be a chance that modifications have been made to the system's internal fan control behaviour that is causing this problem.
Using fan control software to boost the speed of the fans can also cause them to wear out prematurely.
Run the AHT off the DVD and see if it throws up any codes. If it does, then you may have faulty temperature sensors despite what the fan hacks say. If that is the case, Apple will replace the logic board free of cost if you are under warranty (Applecare).

Can't upgrade MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) to snow leopard
I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and a copy of snow leopard on DVD. When I try to upgrade it says that snow leopard cannot be installed on this computer
The details are as follows:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B06
SMC Version (system): 1.33f8
Serial Number (system): W88460TU1GA
Hardware UUID: B0F6EC73-8CE7-58F8-B300-769B4BBB1353
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
The retail dvd I have has a part number: MC223Z/A
I am currently running 10.5.8
Anyone know what the problem might be?
ThanksPerhaps the HDD does not have sufficient room. It needs a minimum of 5 GB for Snow Leopard.
In all other respects your MBP should be able to install 10.6.
Disk MC223Z/A is the appropriate retail disk.

Airdrop does not work between macbook pro & iPad air 2
From the document I posted above see this:
System Requirements
To see if your Mac works with AirDrop, make sure you’re in the Finder by clicking the desktop (the background area of your screen), or by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock. Then, check to see if AirDrop is listed as an option in the Go menu. If you don't see AirDrop listed, your Mac doesn't support this feature.
In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
your iOS device needs to include a lightning connector
your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed
your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model with OS X Yosemite installed
Your Mac and iOS device both need bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. You do not have to be connected to a specific Wi-Fi network.
To transfer files between two Mac computers, you need the Mac models listed below with Wi-Fi turned on and OS X Lion or later installed.
MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)*
MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)*
iMac (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010)
*The MacBook Pro (17-Inch Late 2008) and the white MacBook (Late 2008) do not support AirDrop.
For help identifying your Mac, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu. You can refer to the Apple Support website to find out if your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch includes a lightning connector. -
Logic board liquid damage of macbook pro retina display late 2012
there were water spilled on my macbook pro 13" retina (late 2012) and I sent it to apple service in Trieste, Italy and they said that the logic board is damaged and I need a new one with a new top case.. which costs as buying a new macbook..is there any suggestions or alternative cheaper way to fix it?!
i will in any price cheaper than buying a new one..I see nasty corrosion on that logic board
whoever told you they could genuinely "fix" it , lied to you
I also know for 100% certain theyre not going to desolder any of those micro-connections and add new components.
among the laptop repair community, thats called L.C.D. (lost cause destruction) , ...when it exceeds new-unit replacement cost. -
Where can I buy a larger hard drive for my late 2008, 15" macbook pro? From reviewing questions and answers on the support community it would appear that having Apple remove the old and install the new hard drive is recommended. But how/where?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance -
Hi. My question is pretty much as the heading says :
Is it safe to use an 85watt adapter from a 2006, 17" macbook pro on a late 2011 15" macbook pro?
As far as I can tell from googling and searching around, it does appear that it is safe to do so.
Specifically this page
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2346
But I just wanted to double-check for confirmation that it is indeed safe to use the adapter from such an old mbook pro in a newer one.
The wattage is the same.
I wish to do so as I prefer the T-connector, and my older adapter has a much longer extension cord on it.
If not I may order another one from ebay.
Any idea how to check that an adapter from ebay is a true / legitimate / authentic apple adapter?
Thanks for your help.Benway1 wrote:

Yes.
I recommend you buy one directly from Apple. There are many counterfeit power adapters on the market that could damage your MacBook Pro or potentially cause a fire.
Any idea how to check that an adapter from ebay is a true / legitimate / authentic apple adapter?
Nearly all of them are, even if the seller insists it is "genuine OEM". Legitimate adapters from eBay are likely to be used, not new. There is nothing wrong with used, as long as you know what you're getting.
Identifying a counterfeit is possible only through close examination. -
MacBook pro 8,2 late-2011 after series of kernel panics and video glitches stopped booting
Hello, friends... I am shattered, my MacBook Pro stopped booting today. It all started two days ago, when I came to India and got USB modem dongle from Tata Docomo. It was making Lion kernel panic whenever it was connected to Internet, but had no effect while disconnected or unplugged from the laptop. Then yesterday I had a kernel panic while playing a video in VLC, then while using Skype, and after a while I figured out the pattern, it would crash every time computer switched on the graphic card instead of the on-board CPU graphics. It would also crash with striped blue screen and misplace it horizontally. All this time I was looking for the solution on the internet, and ran two hardware tests, both normal and extended, both showed no issues, tried booting into safe mode getting the striped blue kernel panic screen after the progress bar filled. Resetting the ram also didn't help. Now it will not boot at all, only the hardware test is still working. After the logo screen in normal mode it just goes power off or hangs in grey screen for infinity.
Please, I need your help guys, I'm desperate, went to India for a few months and laptop breaking down almost straight away, and I'm also a dj, so its like a musical instrument to me, that I cannot work without...
Again - MacBook Pro 8,2 Late-2011, 2,4 ghz, 750gb hdd, 4gb ram, ati 1gb graphic card and running Lion 10.7.3, thanks!Try the fixes here, take it back for a warranty call

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) suddenly very slow and laggy
This seems to be a popular question so I apologize, but I know there can be a number of issues that cause a computer to run slow, so I want to post my computer's specifics and hopefully someone can diagnose the issue for me without my having to bring it into the store. Thank you in advance.
Specifically my MacBook runs slow when trying to open or close Microsoft Word, iTunes, or access a folder with pictures and short videos in it. Frequently I get they are not responding, or have to close out of everything else in order to get the spinning wheel to go away and sometimes that doesn't even help.
I would just like the computer to be able perform simple commands in a timely manner like it used to. If there is any way I can get back to this I would be eterrrrnally grateful!
Problem description:
MacBook responds very slow when trying to open applications. Slow, lags, rainbow spinning wheel all the time, even just to open a folder with pictures.
