Macbook pro 2.2 MHZ versus new Macbook pro.

I just started doing some video editing and my computer seems very, very slow for the first time. Never had a problem doing big files in Photoshop. I was thinking of buying one of the new Macbook pro but then realized that the MHZ has only increased to 2.6 to 3MHZ. I can only afford the 2.6, would the upgrade be worth it? How much faster would these new Macbook be?

You wouldn't notice a real lot of difference from 2.2 to 2.6. I would troubleshoot your unit and find out why it is running slower.
How full is your hard drive?

  • MacBook PRO versus new MacBook Black

Does anyone have information or a www site reference telling me the key differences between the 15" MacBook PRO and the new 13" Black (high-end) MacBook?
I have a 12" PowerBook and want to stay as small as possible, but have a MAC with INTEL to be able to run WINDOZE when forced to...
For example: With my PBG4 I can have the an external monitor with a different screen than my PB screen-- I am not forced to have "mirror image"-- but what is the situation with the MacBook vs. MacBook Pro? Questions like that. THANKS!

Here's a comparison chart of the current Mactel notebook line: http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/comparison_chart.html
As far as I can tell, the greatest difference between the Pro line and the BlackBook/WhiteBook line, is the integrated graphics card on the BlackBook/WhiteBook line, which would make things awkward for gamers and graphics professionals who might require the dedicated graphics cards available in the Pro line.

  • Macbook pro versus new Mac pro for editing

    Hi there,
I have been using my Macbook pro to edit some video I shot on a Canon 5D MarkII. It can be slow...
I was contemplating getting a Mac Pro and tried to find some good info on speed difference between a Macbook pro and a Mac Pro. Obviously RAM, hard drive space will make a difference but I would like to get a general idea. I love the portability of my Macbook pro but could I dramatically increase speed in editing with a Mac Pro? Any good info or links with good info will help!

Are you storing your camera footage on the computer's internal system disk?
That will cause problems right away. Your internal drive has plenty to do running the operating system and applications. Asking it to also jump around reading HD footage is overload.
You should at the very least invest in an external FireWire 800 drive for your footage. Depending on your MBP model, you might also have an Express Card slot. This will enable you to use much faster eSATA drives with the appropriate adapter card.
The advantage of the Pro tower is that you can install up to 4 internal SATA drives (up to 8 with a special kit), PCIe cards, dedicated capture cards etc.

  • Old 2.4 white versus new 2.1 white Macbook

Hi there, I'm in the market for a new (or old?) MacBook.
I need Firewire for music recording purposes, so I'm looking at either today's white 2.1ghz MacBook or yesterday's white 2.4ghz MacBook.
They are currently available at various places for around the same price.
The older one has 2.4ghz, but 667mhz bus
the newer one has 800mhz bus, but slower 2.1 ghz processor.
Which one is the more powerful machine?
    Thanks for your help!

Thank you Dave - i had a hunch that might be the case, but since they have obviously taken the white 2.4's off this site it is difficult to tell on the resellers sites exactly what specs they are.
Basically I guess what I'm asking is this: what is new about the white macbook listed here:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=MTE3MjE
if anything? (there's a "new" listed above it, even if it is not the new aluminium model)
Because to me it just looks like the old 2.1ghz macbook with a price INCREASE - am I right.
Kappy - I think I've made it quite clear which laptop I'm talking about - it's a white MacBook, listed on the MacBook page of the Apple store (not the aluminium ones). While it is not technically a new design - it is listed there as "new".

  • Old versus new

Hi all, I'm sure somebody has posted about this type of thing but...
I own a *early 2008 17" MacBook Pro 2.5GHz 250GB HD GeForce 8600M GT 512MB* and I love it. The only gripe I have with it is the size. I carry it around every day and its heavy after a while. Plus I don't really need the extra screen real estate as I nearly always plug it into an external monitor.
So I was wondering whether to sell it and buy a new *15" model but with the 2.4GHz 256MB* graphics. The cheapest one basically.
So I'd like to know how do they compare in terms of speed (as well as any other standout benefits) and graphics and is the 521MB graphics available as an add-on?
Also I jumped and bought my original MBP originally shortly after release in 2006 and I'm on my 3rd after various faults/replacements and this ones working perfectly so I'm a little scared that if I sell this and get a new one I'm going to run into the teething problems I experienced with the first MBP.
    What would you guys do?
    Thanks

Hi there, I'll try to address a few of your points.
The only gripe I have with it is the size.
The thing is that the new MBP is not noticeably different in size or weight. You won't notice any difference in size or weight between the two; the new MBP will be just as heavy as your current one.
how do they compare in terms of speed (as well as any other standout benefits) and graphics and is the 512MB graphics available as an add-on?
    2.5Ghz -> 2.4Ghz
    800Mhz FSB -> 1066Mhz FSB
    6MB cache -> 3MB cache
    512MB 8600 -> 256MB 9600
Personally, I think that in terms of processor speed they're going to be nearly exactly equal. The old one has a 100Mhz faster processor and double the cache, but the new one has a 1066Mhz FSB. In my mind these equal out roughly quite well.
In terms of graphics, the new model will be marginally faster at best. The 8600 and 9600 are essentially the same card, but the 9600 has some more recent shaders and is manufactured at 65nm which is smaller (and more efficient) than the 8600. Overall, perhaps you might see 10% faster graphics in the new model. So... perhaps 4FPS in games, ceteris paribus. In short, nothing spectacular.
    this ones working perfectly
Ah yes, the intangible factor. I think that this is much more important than what I've previously typed. Your machine works perfectly now, and there is no noticeable performance increase (IMHO) going to the new machine. It's going to cost you something to upgrade as well.
Essentially you'd be paying more for only the unibody enclosure and nothing else. If that's worth it to you, go for it. If not, I would stick with your current machine for at least another generation or two. Intel's processor roadmap says that there are bigger and better things coming in the next processor refresh, whenever that occurs.

  • Old airport (2003) versus new AEBS

Hi, what is the difference between the old airport versus the new? I have two macs & iphones that will be connected to it? Is it faster and better range? Both macs are intel. Any help is appreciated. I'm working from home and setting up my network and want to get the best connection I can get.

The circa 2003 Airport Extreme has 802.11b/g wireless, two 100 base-T Ethernet ports (dedicated LAN/WAN) and a USB port for printers only. A dialup phone modem and power over ethernet were optional features.
The newest AEBS (introduced today) is a much more capable unit. It offers simultaneous dual-band 2.4 and 5 GHz 802.11n and b/g modes so you don't have to compromise n speeds if you're also using b/g equipment. It has three Gigabit LAN ports and one WAN port. The USB port can also be used to connect a hard disk drive. It's also a lot less expensive than the original AEBS.
Before today you were limited to creating an 802.11g network if you wanted to use an iPhone with your home network. This eliminates that concern.
Better range... probably, I only say that since I have an Express "n" that's operating b/g compatible with my older AEBS. I have its transmitter power reduced to the minimum of 10% otherwise it dominates my home, and I want my older AEBS to serve as the primary access point.
The simultaneous dual band is a great move on Apple's part. It remains to be seen if Appletalk is supported - I'd rather doubt it since Apple seems to have turned its back on Appletalk as of late. No phone modem either

  • Old Usage Controls versus new Family Base question please.

We currently have Verizons usage controls on both our kids phones at about $5.00 per month. As I understand, the new FamilyBase does the same thing and it is $5.00 to the overall account. If we upgrade to FamilyBase, do we need to cancel the older Usage Controls? Thanks.

Hello mbraun, you pose an excellent question! You will want to remove the usage controls and cancel. After that is completed you will want to add the FamilyBase feature to take advantage of the extra functions. View details on FamilyBase here: http://vz.to/1jYUTsW

  • Old nano versus new one

I just bought an apple (+nano) via the education offer.
I was curious... I bought the old 1st gen nano (4gb) for the same price apple sell the new one (8mb). Wouldn't be fare that they would change my nano with a new one without any harge. I have my nano just for ten days or so...
Isn't it unfair to stack with an old one for just some days difference?

It's not really unfair. You might not like it, but it's not really unfair
Companies need to update their products to stay competitive.
Apple was not offering the new iPod nanos in the education offer, so even if you bought that computer today, you would still get an old iPod nano.
I would give Apple a call and see what they say. You might get some money back from what you originally paid for the nano (so it's less after rebate), but you wouldn't be able to get a new iPod nano, simply because you bought it with the rebate offer and the rebate doesn't include new iPod nanos.

  • Core 2 Duo versus new core i3/i5

Will the new upgrade to i3/i5 make a serious difference?
I've barely had the Core 2 Duo out of the box for a month and already its been 'refreshed.' Not to mention the price drop...

Yeah I was in the same boat as you. I got my 27" dou core 3.06 ghz iMac at BestBuy a little over a month ago. Luckily my graphics card or hard drive started going out so I returned it. Since I'm a premier silver rewards zone member, I have 45 days to return items with no restocking fee. They gave me a replacement right there on the spot, but when I got home I noticed a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen. I took it back for the 2nd time. When they went to the back to get me another one, they returned with the new 2010 27" iMac i3. For all my troubles they gave me a 10% discount off the price and a $30 gift card. I'm really glad they did that! They weren't even supposed to have the new ones in stock yet. They had to get special permission to sell it to me.
As far as the difference between the two... the new imac is about 16% faster and has a better graphics card.

  • Is there a document that list old versus new functions

    Hi:
Is there a document somewhere that list old "_FIELD" functions and their new version. We migrated from 3.0 to 10g and are still using some of the old FIELD functions, for instance we use EDIT_FIELD to invoke an editor vs EDIT_TEXTITEM. I am looking for a document which I believe I have seen before that lists all the old functions that needed replacement during the upgrade.
    Thanks,
    Thomas

  • Need info on New Gl for a fresh implememtation

    Hello,
Kindly give your inputs on the new gl functionality for a fresh implementation. Please provide some documentation or pros and cons of it.
This is the senario, only one plant is being implemented for the time being, what is the possiblity of implementing the new gl at a later stage . If we activate the new gl can it be deactivated or if we activate can and not decide to use it and only uuse the regulat GL is that ok.
kindly provide your inputs as it is urgent and have to give my suggestions soon to the client.
    points will be awarder generously.
    thanks.

    Ashwin,
Here are my thoughts on the new GL.
    1) Parallel Accounting - This feature allows for much more seemless implementation of multiple GAAP accounting.  Previously you'd have to mess around with having accounts that are specific to different GAAPs, creating FI validations to ensure the entries balanced, and complicated reporting structures to make sure you had the proper reporting.  The only other solutions were special purpose ledgers which may have helped to separate transactions for reporting, but did nothing to simplify the chart of accounts issues.  If you are a multinational company, and will have different GAAPs, it is essential.
    2) Profit Center Integration - With the new GL, Profit Center Accounting is an integrated element of the reporting ledgers.  No need for a fully independent PCA implementation.
    3) Extended Coding Block - Better support for adding customer defined fields to the coding block and having full transaction processing and reporting support.  No need to implement the SPL unless you are doing some truly complicated manipulations to posted data such that you need user exits on flexible field movements.
    4) SAP Stated Direction - This is where SAP is going and they aren't looking back.  If this is a fresh implementation you should consider starting out in this manner instead of performing the transition at a later date.  There are different transaction codes for the New GL than from the old GL, different reporting tables for the RW/RP, etc.
    5) Document Splitting - If you need documents to split automatically for various attributes, e.g. profit centers, business areas, other custom defined fields, this is the only effective way to perform this.
I can't answer to the going back/forth  between the two, e.g. classic versus new GL, but don't see why you would be absolutely in error with going new GL.  I'd have a different opinion, but unlikely, if you were already live on the classic GL and you were contemplating going through the conversion.
I hope this was what you were looking for.  Some points would be nice if so, please.
    Regards,
    Kyle

  • G5 1st Gen No video after adding new HD and Ram

I was doing this as a favor for a friend who got this pristeen iMac for free at a 2nd hand store outreach center. The HD and ram were missing and a I T tech we thought knew told us that was all it needed. The mobo capacitors are all looking great so I don't think they're the problem. After installing 2 Gb of new PC 3200 400 mhz ram,new Western Digital 320 Gb 7200 rpm 32mb cache Sata hard drive, new apple wired keyboard, new Turtle USB Mac mouse, the brand new OS X Leopard disc is inside the disc drive but no video! I'm thinking this needs a replacement mobo but I'm wondering if there are any keyboard commands to get my disc back without dismanteling the disc drive. Also if I'm missing anything obvious please help. Thanks

Thanks I'll try the eject disc advice (in AM). Otherwise with no video whatsoever I wont be able to run the Apple Hardware test. This is the first Mac I've ever seen so I'm not sure how Bios etc works. I'm thinking I should see a splash screen or something on start up even without the disc but it's possible I put the disc in reversed. I'm thinking while looking at the screen I should be able to read the disc I'm inserting neverthless I might have been wrong.I'll let you know when I retrieve the disk.

  • Backing up both windows and mac os

if i get a new macbook how do i get mac os and windows from my old computer to my new computer exactly as they are, so i don't have to reinstall mac os and windows?

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
OSX Time Machine is a good backup solution for your OSX volume, but doesn't backup your BootCamp Windows.
WinClone http://twocanoes.com/winclone/ is an OSX application which can make image files of your BootCamp Windows for backup.
Placing these image files on your OSX partition will get Time Machine to backup this file.
A Windows backup program to have a look at is Casper http://www.fssdev.com/products/casper/ but that needs to have an additional Windows file system (NTFS) partition on your external harddisk as destination for the backup.
Keep in mind that because of the hardware changes (old Mac versus new Mac) it might be better to use the 'fresh' OSX on the new MAc and only restore your user files and apps, not the whole OSX system.
    Same for your BootCamp Windows.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • No video whatsover G5 1st gen iMac

My friend got this pristeen 1st gen iMac for free at a 2nd hand store outreach center. The HD and ram were missing and a I T tech we thought knew told us that was all it needed. I had no experience with anything Mac but I'm willing to learn. After installing 2 Gb of new PC 3200 400 mhz ram,new Western Digital 320 Gb 7200 rpm 32mb cache Sata hard drive, new apple wired keyboard, new Turtle USB Mac mouse and the brand new OS X Leopard disc and..... no video! I'm thinking this needs a replacement mobo but the mobo and capacitors are all looking great(appears new) so I don't think they're the problem. If I'm missing anything obvious please help. Possibly there's a video card missing and I don't realize it yet. Otherwise I'll be looking for one of those replacement G5 mobo's or a trade plus difference deal for another refurb or used Mac. Any ideas?

Is it starting up, but with no video? Or is it not starting up? I'm not certain an iMacG5 will handle a SATA disk drive successfully. Another possibility is that whoever had it before saw it die, salvaged the HD and RAM, and junked it. Sometimes you get what you pay for! You could get an external case for a SATA Hard disk, and maybe find someplace that would take the RAM in trade for some that's right for a new Mac, and be ahead to just buy a new one. If you're like me, I HATE to see one bite the dust with no hope of resuscitation!

  • Rounding to 2 decimal places in Derived column transform editor

I want to replace the contents of a value column with itself but rounded to 2 decimal places.
The current column is a double and I have tried to perform this using the following expression but it fails to work.
    Code Snippet
    Round(cc_vl,2)
    How should I achieve this?

I’ll take a guess here but you started with this –
    123.45678
    Got this –
    123.45000
    Wanted this –
    123.45
So the 123.45000 is absolutely correct, the value has been rounded to 2 digits. A double however has a scale greater than 2, and you only wanted two digits after the point because you were concerned about how the value looked rather than the actual value. This is certainly not a bug. It is how you format the data for display.
Your solution is the way to do this, either on the Derived Column or Data Conversion Transformation. You got it in the end, the replace versus new, because you cannot change the type of a column. You may convert the value, but the storage type of the column means it will implicitly revert to the base column type when you put it back, albeit with a value that has been rounded.
    Does that explain it?
