The best way to look up exactly which Mac you have is with Mactracker:
http://www.mactracker.ca/
When you find your Mac, it will tell you which display you have.
I am assuming that you are using a site like ifixit or PowerBook Medic?
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/
They usually tell you how to take something apart, but then just tell you to follow the steps in reverse to reassemble it. This is annoying, but doable. You should also be able to look up the exact display you need at either of these.
Good luck!

  • Installing Windows XP on Macbook Pro 17 inch with broken screen...

My Macbook Pro 17 inch's (2.16 ghz, 2006) screen is broken, and displays only the top 1/4 accurately, with the lower 3/4 a series of lines, etc...
Up until recently, the screen would work after a period of time so long as I did not move it. However, now, it is a complete loss, as mentioned above.
My problem is that I cannot install Windows XP using bootcamp because I cannot see what on earth I am doing! And the last thing I want to do is accidently format my OS X partition while blindly fumbling around in the Windows XP boot screen.
I was able to install (obviously) Leopard by closing the laptop screen immediately after startup, forcing the computer to use my external monitor. This, however, does not work once the computer begins the windows installer, it simply reverts back to the laptop screen.
Any advice would be of great help! I have searched forum after forum, but have found no one with a similar problem.
    Thank you!
p.s.- you'd think a $3200 laptop would last a little longer. So far I have replaced the HD twice, as well as the left internal cooling fan...

    As the topic says,
What cable do I need to buy to connect my Macbook Pro (2011) to a VGA screen? I tried the "Mini DisplayPort to VGA", but apparently it doesnt fit the 2011 Pro version...
    Help me out please.

    Yes ... minidisplay
But what I do not like in that picture (my personal view, others may think differently), is that there is much plastic around the connectors where the cable must fit.  You may ot may not be able to get the cable to *fully seat* with the adapter.
Other adapters (http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0334087, yes I know this is a DVI) hve no plastic barriers to connections.

Unfortunately this means that there is a problem in the boot sector of your hard drive. It might be indicative of a fundamental corruption in the coding that allows your computer to boot your operating system from your hard drive. I had this problem twice and it resulted in me having to get a new hard drive and restore my data.
In other words, your computer can't talk to your operating system so you can't access your data.
Here is my advice: DON'T CALL APPLE TECH SUPPORT though they are kind and usually helpful it will take you an hour just to explain the situation and they will only tell you to do what I'm gonna say here.
First: Shut down your computer completely
Two: boot up while holding down the following keys: command, option, p, and r. The computer will reboot 3 times. This solution will likely fail so if you're frustrated skip to the next step.
Three: Boot up while holding down the option key. Select recovery drive. Select your default language. Select disk utility, click on Macintosh HD, and select "verify and repair volume." Likely the verification will produce some line like "unused node not erased." Or something like that. If anything using the words "node structure" comes up, you need a new hard drive.
If after verification and repairs you still can't boot I sincerely hope you have apple care because you will need a new hard drive. Set up an appointment to come in to the apple store, they will tell you to go and get data recovery, just ask them to give you the old hard drive. Unless you have an up to date backup in which case you can just restore from that. If you're lucky the only issue is with the boot sector which means that if you ask them to give you the old hard drive, you can buy an enclosure and you have effectively been given a free external hard drive. It still works to store data just not to load an operating system.
If you have a back up drive bring it to the apple store and they'll do the whole thing right there, it should take around an hour and a half but may take longer.
Hope this helps, it's annoying but it's your safest bet.
    All the best.

  • How to erase a Macbook Pro Hard drive when the screen is dead

I have a Macbook Pro (2007) with a dead screen and a motherboard issue. Just bought a new macbook and i was planning on transfering the hard drive over and selling my pro on ebay for parts, Is there anyway i can securely delete my data from the computer without seeing it on the screen before i decide to sell it?

Be sure your dead Mac isn't covered by this program:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
If it is, you can get a free repair, and it would be worth a lot more on EBay.
    Good luck!

Use a alias, but you might have to use a zip code that matches the location used.
Also if you click the right button there is a way to bypass the registration, like register later or something, Apple has it hidden. Also to bypass the internet connection to send the registration off.
Never place your name on a Mac or PC, it's spread throughout the entire machine, in emails, on the network in plain sight etc.

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro start up? White screen and flashing question mark.

    Hi,
I've had my MacBook Pro for almost 2 years now and I installed OS X 10.8 about 4 months ago.
Today I turned the MacBook Pro on and a white screen with a flashing question mark appeared. I tried then getting the startup manager up: turning on the laptop and immediately holding in alt (option). But nothing appeared for about 25 seconds until a rotating Earth labelled 'Internet recovery' appeared that gave me options to join wireless connections. However, my internet wasn't in the options and when I tried typing in the information required to join my internet the laptop would just load and never find it.
I then tried putting in my Mac OS X install DVD (10.6.7) and help in C until the apple logo appeared on the screen and the little rotating loading circle appeared. That then disappeared and a cicle with a cross through it appeared (similar to a no entry sign). Then after about 30 seconds a blue screen followed by a grey screen appeared until eventually the disc ran properly. I then went into Disk Utility but there was no option called Macintosh HD, only the discs content. It wouldn't let me first aid, erase or repair anything.
I'm totally stumped and have 4 exams at university within the next 2 weeks. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me out here?
    Thanks,
    Best wishes,
    Connor

The support article linked below is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to starting up from an installation disc, you should instead start up in Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
If you don't have a current backup of all the data on the startup volume, and you want to preserve that data, then you must try to back up before you do anything else. Ask for instructions if you need them.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to reinstall OS X from Recovery, if necessary. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

  • My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update

My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update. It ran beta 5 great but failed on restart after beta 6 install. There is no cursor but I can hear the HDD spooling up. I have tried booting in safe mode, PRAM reset and SMC reset but nothing works. After the first 5 days of every now and then trying to start it, it started fine. I used the machine all day with no problems, it had rolled back the install and was back on beta 5. I decided to try the update again, the same thing happened and it has stayed black for over a week now. It wont work with a monitor either. Help!

    Hello Adam,
I would try instead of installing the beta software, to install the official build of OS X Yosemite from the Mac App Store to see if that gets you passed the no video issue when updating the beta software.

  • 2012 macbook pro retina display artifacts on screen when using onboard video

2012 Macbook Pro Retina Display artifacts on screen when using onboard video.
About a month ago I've noticed these strange artifacts (blocky pixelated looking) running vertically down the screen. It first started when using Safari. Then it started to happen all the time. I turned off the auto switch video in preferences, which I'm assuming forces the computer to use the separate video card and the artifacts go away.
On top of that issue I also have had the ghosting issue.
    Anyone else have this problem?

artifacts onscreen could mean a faulty gpu. You said by forcing it on inbuilt gpu you do not find this issue highlights that. Do take it in to apple for service and also tell them of your ghosting issue.
There are a few retina owners who have faulty gpus.

  • MAC address change under MacBook Pro MB133PL/A (Penryn) with Mac OSX 10.5.2

    Hi,
Do you know how to change MAC address of ethernet LAN card (not Wi-Fi) under MacBook Pro MB133PL/A (Penryn) with Mac OSX 10.5.2 (Leopard) ?
    Thanks,

    I use the terminal.
sudo ifconfig en0 lladdr /enter valid mac address here without the slashes/
    press return
    enter superuser password
    press return
This will change the regular wired ethernet port on you MBP. To change the wireless MAC you should replace the en0 with an en1 but if you have a Airport v1.0 card then it will not work. It might work if you have a v2.0 but people seem to have off an on success with that. Also you can attempt putting ether in place of lladdr if you still have issues that need troubleshooting.
I know there are some legit reasons to change the MAC address and many non-legit ones but lets just say for instance a friend of yours has a network or wireless and they forgot their password to control the settings on that network. Long ago when they made the network they limited access to it by binding it to certain MAC addresses namely theirs. Now they have given you permission to use the network but you can't because your computer does not have their mac address. They cannot make the network give you permission because they forgot their password so they give you thier MAC address and let you trick their network into thinking your computer is actually your friend's and then you are able to surf the internet. They won't just let you use their computer cause they need to write an essay offline for a few hours. This does not violate any terms of service, you got permission and unless there are some other extenuating circumstances this is a legit move. I assume this is the exact reason you want this information.

  • Macbook pro charger cable.. broken!

I have only just realized that my macbook pro's charger has broken at the neck, right under the plastic part that attaches to the computer. The wire inside has frayed and the coated layer of the wire seems to have melted.
I have only had my macbook pro for 5 months and am very disappointed this has happened already. Has this happened to anybody else? But more importantly, will Apple replace my charger free of charge under warranty?
    Thanks guys.

CCan I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but computer seems fine

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.
