Macbook Pro 2008 15 2.5 8600 vs Macbook Pro 2.4 320m

I am wondering what the performance differences will be between a 2008 MBP 15 and 2010 MBP 13. The older one has a dedicated 8600 video card and the MBP has a video chip that shares memory. Any and all information appreciated. I use the machine for normal home use, Photoshop Elements, Second Life
Thanks

Hi Big I,
Here's some good information - http://www.notebookcheck.net
Review for the 320M - http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-320M.28701.0.html
Review for the 8600M GT - http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-8600M-GT.3986.0.html
They appear to be pretty close and I'd say for what you use the machine, both are perfectly capable of handling those three tasks.

  • Problem with Starcraft 2 and Macbook Pro 13" Nvidia 320M

Just got the newest 2.4Ghz 13" MBP with 320M video card.
Played Starcraft for about a week and started noticing severe issues:
    1. sudden frame rate drop, then after about a week,
    2. random tears and jagged lines over the screen when playing
This now almost happens every time the game is played on 1200x800 regardless of quality settings. When I change it to 1024x768, the problem goes away.
I'm guessing it might be a defective video card (transistors blown?).
What do you guys think, is it a hardware defect? I got this computer in Asia with receipt, will Apple stores in Canada honor the warranty? Please help!!

Well, from what you write it sounds as if the game has issues running at high resolution settings on your MacBook Pro 13".
NVIDIA GeForce 320M uses an integrated chipset graphics card with the Core 2 Duo CPU. It lacks dedicated graphics memory but uses the systems main memory instead (in Mac OS X 256 MB from the main memory). Performance is not as good as 15" or 17" MacBook Pro which have dedicated GPU with memory. So you may well find that games perform best at lower lower than the max 1280x800 for the laptop.
If you think you have a hardware issue with your MacBook Pro 13" then run the Apple hardware test (AHT), procedure is listed in your laptops end-user documentation. If it fails AHT then Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service provider are the way to proceed (Apple laptops come with a one-year world wide warranty). But if it passes and your graphics issue is specific to SC2 then you have isolated an issue with the game running on your laptop.
If an issue with the game running in OS X I would definitely check that the laptop firmware and OS X are up to date, Apple recently issued an OS X graphics update that fixed some SC2 issues, and also regularly issues OS X updates to fix known issues we are at (OS X 10.6.4).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4286
Give your feedback to Blizzard customer support about game performance under OS X. Finally, I would bear in mind that Blizzard release OS X and Windows versions of SC2, so it may be worth trying the game run in Windows by Bottcamp on the laptop and seeing if game performance improves (this is also a good test for whether you have a hardware or software issue here).

  • Does my mid 2010 macbook pro's displayport support audio (in addition to the video I know it supports)?

I have been using my displayport to drive a video only HDMI input by way of a displayport to DVI converter followed by a DVI to HDMI converter. It works great but of course there's no audio at the end of that chain because DVI is a video only connector.
That made me wonder... is my displayport outputting both audio and video which could be converted directly to HDMI (giving me both audio and video at the HDMI end)? How can I tell if my mid-2010 macbook pro's displayport connector is outputting both audio and video? My internet search is inconclusive about whether both are available on that connector for my mid 2010 model macbook pro.
    Thank you.

Hi, these MacBooks of 2010 support Audio through display port:
    MacBook Mid 2010 (GeForce 320M)
    MacBook Air 11 inch 2010 or 13 inch 2010 (Core 2 Duo)
    MacBook Pro 13 inch 2010 (GeForce 320M)
    MacBook Pro 15 inch 2010 or 17 inch 2010 (GeForce 330M),
No 2009 Macs support audio through DisplayPort
All 2011 and latter Macs support displayPort audio
so it looks like you can get audio if yo have the Macbook with Geforce 320M

  • Issue with MacBook Air and nouveau

    Hi.
I've installed Arch Linux on MacBook Air with Nvidia 320M videocard. Proprietary nvidia driver does not work at all and nouveau has video artefacts (photo attached because screenshot pictures haven't any problems): horizontal noisy black lines and wrong colors on the left two thirds of screen.

nvidiafb works fine, but it has no dri and has problems with suspend.
How to resolve this problem with nouveau? Is it crtc-related or not? Playing with xrandr does not have any effect (except resolution change).

I had an issue with my MBA seeing my HP printer and could find no good reason for the issue.  In the end I deleted the printers WiFi connection and then turned around and set it up on my WiFi network all over again.  My MBA now finds the printer every time.  Okay ...so I don't actually know why it didn't work the first time, but it does now.  Again, there was no apparent issue with either the HP printer or the MBA being connected to WiFi in the first place, but something different must have occurred in software/hardware the second time.

  • What games can I play on a macbook white?

I'm thinking in change my notebook for a white macbook, and I wanted to know if I can play the games that I currently play in my notebook, because my notebook has a nvidia 330m graphic card and the macbook has a nvidia 320m. Thanks

You can go down through this list of games and compare system requirements for the games with your MacBook hardware and OS version....

  • Windows Vista or XP for Bootcamp?

Does it matter what version of Windows Vista I can use?  I found Vista Ultimate, Home Basic, Business, Home Premium.
I want the cheapest one that will work fine.
I only want to run some basic Window's programs, internet.  Nothing extensive like music, videos, pictures, games.
Also, I have heard that Windows Vista is "junk" compared to XP.  Is this really an issue?
    I have OS 10.6.8, 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
    Thank You

For two years I had Boot Camp with Vista Sp2 on a 2008 MacBook Pro. Prior to Vista this computer had Boot Camp with XP Sp2.  I used these principally for PC games not available on Mac OS.
While Vista has a bunch of annoyances it was a much better system than XP which required replacement several times. The reason I no longer have Vista is that the 2008 MBP had the 8600 graphics glitch which even though it was repaired by Apple ended up being given to a relative sans Boot Camp and Windows.
Go with which version you prefer but the Home Premium was the most used. You should not have any problems with the things you state you wish to use.

  • Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT question

Is anyone running Vista 32 bit using Bootcamp on their SR MBP with the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT?
I ran a vista compatibility scan on the MBP and it said that the card would not work in Vista.
I am curious whether this is true or whether others with the same hardware are able to do it ok.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi Luis,
Yes, I am running Vista via Boot Camp on my Early 2008 MBP (SR with 8600 GT). The drivers were included on my restore DVD. You shouldn't have a problem. Good luck!

  • Constant Freezing on Windows 7

    Hello,
I recently recieved my Macbook Pro 13inch (Nvidia 320M Model) about a week ago and Windows 7 has been a problem since day one. First time I installed it the installation wouldn't get past the first boot screen (Detecting Video Drivers and such) then after the 2nd install and installing the Boot Camp drivers I had freezing issues to the point where I couldn't even use Windows 7... then I installed a hotfix that was supposed to fix all the freezing and it helped me actually make Windows 7 usable but the issue is every time I watch a HD video or play a High Quality game I get some minor freezes that shouldn't occur on a computer with specs such as this.
    Steps taken:
    1. Re-Installed Windows 7 twice
    2. Updated Windows 7 completely
    3. Used Bootcamp Drivers
    4. Installed Hot Fix
What's left? Is something wrong with the bootcamp Nvidia Drivers?
Is anyone experiencing this issue or anything similar?
How have you fixed this issue?

Use Nvidia Mobile drivers after u uninstall what Apple installed (Programs and Device Manager driver) would be step #1.
Step #2: disable (rename) AppleHFS and AppleMNT which - not everyone - can be buggy and BSOD.
Mac HFS filenames with special characters etc are invalid for NTFS and I suspect could also cause problems with Windows 7 now.
    Rename AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys
By doing the following you will disable HFS mount / read mode on windows XP, Vista, 7.
Navigate to c:/windows/system32/drivers/AppleMNT.sys, rename the AppleMNT.sys file to something like AppleMNT_keep.sys or something of your likings.
The faulty HFS driver is a valid concern. It seems to happen on many systems.
    You find it in Windows/system32/drivers/AppleHFS.sys
Renaming to AppleHFS_disabled.sys will avoid the blue screens until you have found another solution or Apple updates Bootcamp 3
After renaming both myself because they are no longer "*.sys" or something? they are gone. In my case AppleHFS prevented Windows Backup from running to end and was causing error "some files skipped" and while some might find reading convenient, I prefer Windows not have even read-only access.
You can probably do better with MacDrive8.

  • IMac Graphics card (help please!!)

    Hi there!
I am using the newest iMac 21.5 inch with the 2.7 ghz i5 and the nvidia gt640m. I really want to play RCT3 which was released on appstore not too long ago, and the macchecker on some gaming website says my graphics can handle, but the list of supported graphics cards on the mac appstore page for the game lists the following as compatable:
    NVIDIA GeForce 8600, 8800, 9400, 9600, GT 120, 320M, 330M, 650M
Does this mean that my GT640M will not be supported like the GT650M and other lower end graphics card are? I know that this game also supports intel HD 4000, I might even be willing to purchase an MBP with HD 4000 to play this game (if I haveto.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'd tend to think they just haven't tested the 640M, since far lesser cards are supported.

  • Tried the "Apple Bake" on my early 2008 macbook pro and it worked, does that mean for certain it is my Nividia chip that is bad?

So I had my early 2008 macbook pro (A1260) not wake up after clamshell sleep. After researching the boards felt confident it was the logicboard issue. Not being able to afford a replacement I decided to try the "apple bake", as I have been employed as a maintenance tech for a corrugation company and was comfortable doing the work myself. Anyhow it worked (350 degree f - 8mins) and my mac was back to life working as normal except for the fans running at %100 all the time. The fix was short lived, only lasted about 5 weeks and wouldnt wake up from sleep again. (yes, I applied new thermal paste the first time haha) I did the bake again and again it was revived this time fans working properly (still not sure what that was about) I have since had to do it one more time and now I just dont ever close it or let it go to sleep. I found a guy online who will replace the gpu for a good price ($150), my question is, is it actually the Nividia chip thats the issue and not something else? Is there any other issue that would be reolved by doing the bake and Im just thinking its the faulty 8600 geforce chip?
    Macbook Pro 4,1 - 10.6.8 - 2.6ghz Core 2 Duo - 4gb 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
Other issues I had aside from not waking up from sleep
-Strange feedback noise coming from speakers in between any audio being played. (intermittent) any audio will stop the noise. (might be unrelated)
-Dark lines from bottom of screen to top. Screen reset will fix (shift+cntrl+eject)
    -Pixeleation when gaming (intermittent)
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks in advance

  • MacBook pro (late 2008) shutting down even without the battery

    Hello
I have a MacBook pro late 2008 model, recently it started to randomly shut down.
    I have tried the following
    - Reseting Pram
    - Reseting the SMC
    - Recalibrating the battery
    - New hard drive
    - Returned to original RAM (from 4 to 2Gb)
    - Removed the battery and run with the MagSafe only
    - Downloaded a fan control program to run it at max and verify if this was not a heating issue (although this also happens right after starting the laptop)
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm already loosing hope on my Mac :(
Thanks for any help that you could provide

    Hi V,
Even though the symptoms don't match up exactly, you may have the NVIDIA issue. First, go to System Profiler > Hardware > Graphics/Displays and see if you have the GeForce 8600M GT GPU. This is the GPU covered under the free repair program. While there, also look at PCIe Lane Width. If it says anything other than x16, the GPU has issues (but this is only one potential symptom). If you have the 8600 GPU, bring the MBP to an Apple Store or AASP for free testing. If Apple's free test confirms the issue, repair is free. Read all about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Also, whether you have the 8600 or not, you should run all the updates in Software Update.

    Jamesandmacbooks,
if by “free” you mean “gratis” (as opposed to, say, “open source”), then there’s only one version of OS X to date that’s gratis, namely Mavericks. You can only download Mavericks if you currently have Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later installed. If you’re still running Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.something) on your 2008 MacBook Pro, then you’ll need to first purchase the white retail Snow Leopard DVD, install it on your MacBook Pro, and run Software Update to get it to 10.6.8, after which you can download Mavericks gratis from the Mac App Store and install that. Be sure that your MacBook Pro meets all of Mavericks’ system requirements before trying to install it. If you currently run any PowerPC apps, note that they won’t be supported in any version of OS X after Snow Leopard.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 - Macbook Pro and Macbook Air will not print

    Products:
    HP Officejet Pro 8600
Macbook Pro (Mac OS X, Version 10.7.5)
Macbook Air (OS X, Version 10.8.2)
    Question:
Why did my Macs initially print fine, but now will not print at all?
    Full Story:
I have a wireless network at my house that consisted of a 30mb cable internet, Netgear 900n, HP Officejet Pro 8600, 2 Dell Laptops with Windows 7, a Lenovo Laptop with Windows 7, and Dell Tower with Windows 7 - All printed just fine.
The HP Officejet 8600 was added to my network about 2 months ago.
I added a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Air about 3 weeks ago.  Both Macs printed just fine for about a week.  Then suddenly they stopped.  I spent about 2 hours on the phone with HP Service, and they finally said it must be my router.  So I called Netgear.  Netgear was useless!  They wanted me to agree to charges for services before they would even discuss the issue.
Due to information provided by HP's service support, and because Netgear will not support their product, I promptly purchased a new router - an Apple Airport Extreme.
The Macs recognize the printer, will print if hardwired via a USB cable, but will not print wirelessly to the Officejet Pro 8600.  The PCs print fine.
The frustration that is being felt is compound by the fact that the Macs printed just fine with the Officejet Pro 8600 2 weeks ago, and now the printer just shows "idle"... even with a new router. (see image below)
Please help, I appreciate any support.
As a side note, the HP Service rep was very friendly, and definitely tried to support the HP Product, which is much more than I can say about Netgear.
    Thank you,
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
More likely the issue related with Multicast, which Apple devices relies on to communicate with teh device through the network.
First try unplugging the router for 30 seconds.
Plug it back to the power and wait for 2-3 minutes.
Turn the HP printer Off and back On, then check for any difference.
If the same persists, try changing your router configuration as following
Note: the settings below are not related with the HP product, I provide you the steps as a best effor and those are only based on my own knowledge. you may try modifying the router settings at your own risk:
Open the router configuration page (can be found listed as the Default Gateway by clicking the Wireless icon on the printer, then print a network configuration report.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Setup option from the menu, then click on WAN Setup.
Make sure to uncheck the box next to Disable IGMP Proxying and Apply the changes.
Click the LAN Setup on the same Setup menu.
Set the RIP Version as RIP-2 and Apply the changes.
Reboot your router and then check for any change.
I hope you may find that information useful, you may also use the user guide below for further information:

  • Install Windows 8.1 64bit on a Macbook Pro Late 2008 (using bootcamp 4.0.4033)

Hi everyone, I just tried to install windows 8.1 64bit (x64) on my MacBook Pro 15'' Late 2008 (Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz - 4GB RAM - Nvidia 9600M GT 512Mo), running Mavericks (10.9.5), and successed it with bootcamp 4.0.4033.
I installed it from scratch (new partition, no update from windows 7), in less than 1h following these very simple steps :
    Step "0" :
    - You'll need an two-button usb mouse plugged
    - Make sure your 64bit kernel is activated by typing this line of command in the terminal :
    sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
If you need to cancel it, simply type this :
    sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386
I don't really know if this activation is necessary, but I did it 6 months ago for After Effects and maybe this activation has an effect on what happens next.
Step 1 : download the contents of bootcamp 4.0.4033 on a USB key, downloadable here :  Boot Camp Support Software 4.0.4033
After the download, you'll need to unzip this file in your usb key.
NB : This bootcamp only works from XP to windows 7, but it will be enough for your old-timer laptop.
Step 2 : Create a new NTFS partition on your HDD (using the disk utility)
Windows 8.1 64 bit needs at least 20GB, so I recommend a 100GB partition as a minimum for a correct running OS (the "15%" rule).
NB : Windows 8.1 will run over a NTFS partition and nothing else.
Step 3 : Insert your bootable windows 64bit 8.1 (CD or USB key).
Step 4 : Reboot your laptop, and keep pressed the Alt key just after the boot bell sound.
The OS selection screen loads. Once appeared, you can release the Alt key.
Step 5 : If your bootable device is working, the OS selection screen will display a "Windows 8.1" HDD or CD icon. Click on it and presse "enter".
Maybe you'll see a "UFI Windows" or "UFI Boot" or "UFI something...", this doesn't work.
After pressing "enter", the windows 8.1 installation process will start.
Step 6 : During the installation process, you'll have to chose the destination partition for your OS.
Select the partition you've created earlier (step 2)
Following the windows 8.1 steps are very simple.
NB : Don't forget to press the Alt key when windows 8.1 tries to restart!
Step 7 : Eject your windows 8.1 CD/usb key, then reboot holding Alt key, and select your freshly installed windows OS in the selection screen
Step 8 : After windows 8.1 is loaded, insert your usb key with Bootcamp 4.0.4033, open the "bootcamp" folder, right-click on the bootcamp setup, and click on "properties".
    Select the "compatibility" tab
Check the box "run this program in compatibility mode for"
In the list below this box, select "Windows 7"
    Click "Apply" then "Ok"
Now launch this boot camp setup (press "enter" or double-click)
Step 9 : Complete the BootCamp installation process, then restart (like step 7)
Don't forget to hold the Alt key after the bell sound
Step 10 : Enjoy your freshly installed windows 8.1!
You can acces your bootcamp parameters from the task bar (click on the tiny booycamp icon to open the quick menu and then click on the parameters/configurater). Here you can set your keyboard preference, your trackpad preference (multi-touch works), etc.
Following this procedure, I can use the built-in Apple-maped keyboard of my MBP. Every function keys works (Volume, luminosity, etc.)
Coming from Windows XPSP3, I was very surprised by the speed of the windows 8.1 installation (using an external USB super drive), and more surprised by this OS running flawlessly on my undying MBP!
The only issue I have is that my ethernet port isn't recognized, but it's a minor problem and i'm gonna found it quickly. I think it's due to my installation which wasn't perfectly clean (I try to run manually bootcamp 5.0.1 first, so there is some crap drivers somewhere).
So in order to confirm this procedure, i'm gonna re-install windows 8.1 from scratch very soon, because it take less time to do it (from step 1 to step 10) than write this article!

    And I used this method:
    1. Install Windows 8.1
    2. Download BootCamp 5 and unzip to folder BootCamp5 of a USB drive
    3. Start CMD as Administrator
    4. Install BootCamp 5 by entering the following commands
D: (Assuming the USB drive is assigned to letter D
    CD BootCamp5\BootCamp\Drivers\Apple
    BootCamp.msi
No need for InstEd might be considered by some as even more elegant as bezodziu's method

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.
