MacBook Pro 2008 crashes constantly with Yosemite

Hi!
I'm running an early 2008 15" MacBook Pro with 2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB memory, and I just installed Yosemite 10.10.2 as well as the 4 GB memory and a new Samsung 840 EVO SSD 250 GB hard drive and now my computer crashes frequently, seemingly at random. It freezes, for a second, then shuts down and starts up again and this is the report it provides once it has restarted:

I don't understand the report at all and I couldn't find another topic with the same problem, so if anyone has any ideas what is wrong, if there's something I could fix, I'd really appreciate the help! Before the upgrade my MBP was running OS X 10.5.8 and after replacing the old hard drive with the new SSD drive and upgrading the 2 GB memory to 4 GB I first installed OS X 10.6.8 and only then downloaded Yosemite.
I'll gladly provide more information if needed!
Thank you,
H

Thanks so much for the superfast reply!
It seems that the new RAM was the problem, although memtest on both RAMs gave me nothing but okays all the way. But I removed one of the new RAMs anyway and with only one RAM in one of the slots there hasn't been anymore panics. So thank you!
It is kind of a shame though, because with 4 GB RAM my MBP was a lot faster and they were specifically for MBPs too, so I'm wondering what's the problem. The memtest said they were fine too, and my MBP should be able to handle max. 4 GB RAM, so could the RAM still be faulty despite what the memtest said, or is there possibly something I could do to stop the panics and still use the 4 GB RAM? I know it's probably a long shot to ask, but I have to try in case someone is experiencing the same problem and knows what to do.
Still, thank you so much for you help, OGELTHORPE!

  • Final Cut Pro X crashes constantly with unique error.

Just opening FCPX 10.0.6 on my Mac Pro (OS X 10.8.2) makes it crash. From the event log, here's the only error that pops up (and it's the same one that's crashed on me 20 times today.)
    Crashed Thread:  47  com.apple.helium-render-queue-exec-unit-gpu
Even after a wipe and reinstallation of OS X and FCPX on the Mac Pro, I still get this crash and the app is unusable.
It's a Mac Pro 4,1 with an ATI Radeon HD 4870 card (the same card it came with).
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
EDIT: I have NO third-party plugins. This is a straight FCPX install, nothing else is on the box.

I have this same exact crash - except mine happens about 20% of the time when I adjust any parameter (ie opacity or a plugin ) of a clip that is playing IF any currently playing clip has a motion effect applied to it. Any motion effect - even ones I created.
Happens on OS X 10.8.3 on two different macbook pros! - one from late 2011 and one from early 2008. On the new machine I have also installed a brand new 10.8.2 system on an external drive with only FCPX installed and also get this crash when booted from that.
Lack of RAM should not cause a crash - just slow things down - but no lack here - 2008 mbp has 6GB and new mpb has 16GB.
Otherwise these machines are rock solid. I use (or have used) them extensively for performing music/interactive video on stage where everything must work… or else.
On the 2011 machine I forced the use of the integrated graphics for FCPX instead of the real graphics card. Also got the crash then.
I tried with clips imported from a panasonic GH2 and from my iPod Touch. Both caused crashes, so its probably not my video clips.
I did not have this problem in OS X 10.6.8, which i was on until a few weeks ago.
Tried running the trial of Digital Rebellion's Pro Maintenance Tools - here's the output:
    Motion Effect
This crash appears to have been caused by a Motion Effect.
    Suggested Actions
Use Housekeeper to run a Comprehensive clean.
Remove third party filters from clips, or use Plugin Manager to disable them completely.

Report generated by Crash Analyzer in Pro Maintenance Tools
So I ran their comprehensive clean. Didn't help. But then again how could it? - a new totally clean system exhibited the problem.
I can't think of any common thread behind all the machine/OS combinations besides:
    OS X 10.8.2 or 3
    FCP X 10.0.7
Unfortunately I think i just trashed my zip copy of the last verision of FCP X to test, which i tend to keep around for a while when a new version comes out, but as 10.0.7 was fine on 10.6.8 which I was running until recently, I trashed 10.0.6. Is there any way to get older version of software from the app store?
Thoughts? Sounds like a genuine bug to me - the amount of different configurations it happens in. I don't know why everyone isn't having/complaining about this problem.

  • My Macbook pro 13 mid 2010 with yosemite not installing window thru bootcamp

Hi...I have Macbook pro 13 mid 2010... runnig os x yosemite, but on this os x i m unable to install windows 7 through bootcamp ! what to do?? plz help???

Which versions of Windows work with Boot Camp 5.1?
Boot Camp 5.1 supports 64-bit, non-Enterprise versions of Windows 7, Windows 8.0, and Windows 8.1. This version of Boot Camp doesn't support Windows XP, Windows Vista, or any 32-bit version of Windows. Depending on your Mac, you may be able to use an earlier version of Boot Camp to work with other versions of Windows. For details, see the Boot Camp system requirements for Microsoft Windows.
Check the the table in the link above. It indicates that BootCamp 4.0 will allow you to run a 32 bit version of Windows 7

  • Macbook Pro Mid 2012: Issues with Yosemite update, graphics, and hard drive.

    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
    I've used 192.8 GB
Operating System: 10.10.1 (14B25) YOSEMITE UPDATE
I've been experiencing problems with my Macbook Pro shortly after the two year mark of when I've purchased it. There are a few things that are going on. I recently verified my Macintosh HD disk through disk utility and it stated in red that there was an incorrect number of file hard links & then error: This disk needs to be repaired and to restart and then press "R". However, everything before that seemed to have passed. I have everything backed up on an external hard drive and use the time machine frequently. Another thing that has been happening, usually when I'm opening one my adobe programs, is that my screen will go white for a minute along with unidentifiable pink glitchy shapes that don't move. My computer has not been running like it used to and is running slow, freezing, and periodically going white --- as I just mentioned before. I just know that something isn't it right. I've been having to restart my computer by manually pressing the power button more than I've ever had over the past two years. I always work on my computer on a hard surface in a cool area & my fans seem to behaving okay. I also recently installed the Yosemite update for the mac sometime during this past November too and noticed slower running speed, more freezing, and longer times to boot up afterwards. Please speak up if you're experiencing problems with your 2012 Macbook pro too and especially after downloading the Yosemite upgrade. I don't see how it's in any way acceptable that I should have to deal with issues pertaining to my graphics card. Sorry for this post being a little all over the place.

    Hello brousch,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I see that your Mac is spontaneously restarting whenever you see a certain animation on your screen.  This indicates your Mac is getting a kernel panic caused by that animation.  If you'd like to learn more about kernel panics, including how to troublshoot them, please take a look at the information in the link below.

  • Playing Counter Strike Source on Macbook Pro Unibody crashes constantly

I'm running Macbook pro with the 2.8 ghz processors and 320gb 7200rpm I've boot camped my mac with a xp 32bit cd installed all the drivers from the mac os cd then installed the rest of the drivers and updates from windows update then once that was finished i went to apple.com and downloaded bootcamp 2.1 update for xp. installed steam then bought and downloaded CS. I'll load up counter strike and i turned all the visual effects to as low as they go the resolution is not high same as the ratio which is set at normal.I'll be playing counter strike and within 10 seconds of joining a server to about 4-5 minutes my computer screen will go black sounds will repeat like it froze then i have to hold the power button. At first i thought it was the laptop overheating. XP runs the fans at full speed and my laptop is sat on top of a laptop cooler with 2 fans spinning at 2000rpm. I didn't think this was enough so i put a pretty powerful house fan up next to my computer and put it on full blast. The unibody didn't even get warm it was so good at cooling but yet again 2 minutes playing CS I crashed again. Can anyone help me out? Other then the crashing and having to reset my laptop the game runes at 150fps average even the video stress test said i did 190 fps.

After several more tests I’ve arrived at a solution.
There seems to be a random element in Boot Camp’s installation process that creates an IRQ resource conflict in Windows. The BSOD I was getting indicated that “IRQL not less than or equal to” and a BCM.sys file was responsible for the conflict. This file is related to the Broadcom Ethernet driver.
Reverting back to Boot Camp 2.1 actually made Counter Strike crash even sooner, but suggested to me that Boot Camp drivers were responsible. I performed a complete uninstall and reinstalled to Boot Camp 3.0. Hours of game play later and no crashes or BSOD.
If a complete uninstall and reinstall doesn’t fix it for you the first time, try it again. I think it just has to “randomly” assign the IRQ correctly. Manually assigning the IRQ probably won’t work as Windows apparently cannot detect the conflicts until it fails.
Direct X 10 is not responsible for the problem. I tested this by running CSS in 9.0c mode via an advanced start command and it still crashed. Oh, and I also discovered that Direct X 10 is integrated into Vista and cannot be uninstalled or rolled back.

  • MacBook Pro fan running constantly with no utilization

Just got my boss's MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) model back from Apple after a GPU related repair (which appears resolved).  They replaced logic board amongst other things.
As soon as I turn it on I hear the fan, quietly running.  If I close the lid, it runs for about 20 seconds then stops. This is not loud; they are not running full blast (that is a much different sound).  But I can hear it in a quiet room.  Owner of the laptop was complaining about fan noise before; I assumed he was stressing the CPU but now I can see what he was complaining about.
Activity Monitor (with 'All Processes' selected), sorted by CPU, shows nothing running more than 1-2%, and 'Idle' at the bottom is showing about 99.65%.  So there are no runaway processes. The room (ambient temp) is about 66F (not overly hot). The laptop is on a tile counter - no obstacles to airflow. Same issue occurs on battery and wall power. Over a several hour period, I never hear the fan stop.
I did an SMC reset (ctrl-opt-shift-Power) and this seems to have no effect (this seems to be the magic bullet for most of these issues, after tracking down runaway processes).
So my question is - does anyone know what the design is - could it be that the fans are designed to run all the time on this model, but they are (supposed to be) super quiet and not audible at low RPM, and maybe these fans have been become noisy, therefore I'm hearing it?  Was this a specific design issue for this model of MacBook pro (with NVidia GPU)?

Update.  I downloaded a nice free program called "Macs Fan Control" from MacUpdate. It shows me that I have two fans "Left Side" and "Right Side" and they are both running at the minimum RPM; the window shows Min RPMs as 2160 and 2000 (left/right), and the 'current' is 2161/2005 (changes all the time but very close to the minimum). Max RPM shows 5940/5499 (left/right).  "Control" is auto, meaning the program is not trying to control the speed.
I tried setting the minimum below the values above (eg, I tried changing the minimum to 1,500) but it would not let me. I tried setting the minimums above the values shown, and it allowed me. There is obviously a 'safety' feature in the fan program to prevent slowing down the fans to a value below what is considered safe.
I then installed the same program on my MacBook air.  I cannot hear any fan on my MacBook air, but - Macs Fan Control shows a single 'Exhaust' fan running at minimum value of 1200. If I press my ear hard against the bottom of the MacBook air, I can just about hear a faint, faint noise.
So my theory now is - the fans are always running on every MacBook (Air, Pro, etc) - the issue is, how fast they run.  And, it would appear (from my MacBook Air experience) that the fans are generally quiet.
I then used the program to speed up the left side fan; the noise grew significantly and was unpleasant. At 4,000 RPM it was a deep, throaty sound.  I then slowed it back down, and did the same to the right side fan; at 4,000 RPM it was a gentle 'whoosh' sound. SO ... this tells me the left side fan is messed up (bad bearings, etc).  I PRESUME the two fans are the same, and should sound 'similar'.  Would others agree with my assessment?

  • Macbook Pro 13" crashes constantly while watching video (like Netflix with Silverlight, Flash games, or other games like Diablo III)

I would like to point out that I upgraded my RAM memory to 4GB from the original 2GB... that's the only thing that I've ever done to make me think that maybe it's making my machine faulty.

OK, I found the kernel panic last log and here's the text... hope it helps... HELP PLEASE!! This happens to me at least once every two days...

  • Pro  cs3 crashing constantly with extra audio

As described above; when putting another audio wavefile on the timeline [track 2] pro cs3 starts crashing [pc boots!] when moving along the timeline and using the ripple edit tool.
Project doesn't want to open again afterwards...
I use aspect hd to edit hdv in a cineform pal preset.
All updates for pro cs3 are taken care of.
Tried the same thing in Pro 2, and no crashing there.
Currently i am using pro2 again, but i was wondering if there are more people who are experiencing this.

    Some additional information:
Sound card is a Claro Plus XT not XP.  Used to typing XP heh
Also, the video capture works with the included blackmagic capture software, as well as freeware solutions like VirtualDub and a Japanese freeware program I use.  I'm able to capture video and audio without issue on those.  Just don't know why Premiere doesn't do it...

  • I installed my new iMac with my Macbook Pro 2008 backup and created a network with the iMac and now the Macbook Pro cannot get internet.

I installed my new iMac with my Macbook Pro 2008 back up.  I created a iMac network with Airport extreme, but now my Macbook Pro cannot get internet.  any ideas on why or what to do about it.

    Hello 1BillyMac,
It seems you have a network conflict that isn't allowing your MacBook Pro to connect to the internet. This may be caused by both computers sharing identical network settings. You may want to consider creating a new network location on your MacBook Pro to assign new network settings. The following article will instruct you on how to do that:
OS X Yosemite: Add a network location
A network location is a group of network settings
A network location is a group of network settings for your various network services (Ethernet or Wi-Fi for example).
If you often change network settings, you may find switching between locations quicker and easier than repeatedly modifying individual groups of settings.
For example, you might want to make a location for “home,” where you connect to the Internet with a telephone modem, and a location for “office,” where you connect to your company network and the Internet using Ethernet or AirPort.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Network.
Click the Location pop-up menu, choose Edit Locations, then click Add .
Enter a name for the location, then click Done.
Enter settings for each network connection service you want to use in that location.
After you create your locations, you can switch all of your network settings by clicking the Location pop-up menu and choosing a different location.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

    Try this:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Macbook Pro Retina crashes after SMC Reset

Hey guys. My macbook pro retina is constantly running its fan at full speed at random times. The fan is always running on high even when I do not have any background apps running. And every time I try to perform SMC reset, my macbook crashes and I have to reinstall OS X all over again. Some other issues are that I cannot update my computer without crashing and having to end up re-downloading the software again. Also, when starting up my macbook on the new Yosemite, the loading bar when logging in gets stuck, which again results in me reinstalling the software or restoring from an old backup. People have suggested replacing the SSD in the computer but I believe it may be the motherboard that may need to replace. I own a Macbook Pro Retina 15" early 2013 running OS X 10.10. And everything is factory when it comes to hardware.

I just bought a new charger and it appears to be working, so looks like that problem was not with my MBP but rather with the charger itself.
I am noticing that my fan is a little quieter now, but still doesn't sound normal. I have looked at Activity Monitor and nothing is using a lot of CPU at all (highest is Chrome at 6%). The MBP does get hot when the fan is going. I have looked at videos for cleaning/replacing the fan, which I think may be a good idea, but I don't have the proper tools at this time. It's something I'll keep looking into.
Also, Chrome and Mail both seem to be working now, randomly, even though I haven't done anything else. It's weird that they both stopped working immediately after I did an SMC reset, but maybe it's just a coincidence?
I will do another SMC and PRAM reset if further problems persist. Thanks for all the help!
