Macbook Pro 2008. My screen stayed black and is unresponsive and sleep light is on. I shut down and then restarted and nothing happened on screen but sleep light came on and is solid.

It could possibly be the video card, or the logic board. You could try a smc reset if you have not done s yet. smc reset:

I had an issue similar to this, and there was a bad logic board, hard drive and video card.
You might want to bring it in to the Apple store, they do the diagnostic for free and give you a repair price.
They offer a flat repair rate, which they fix what ever is wrong as long it was due to liquid damage.
The repair cost me about 1/3rd the price of a new machine and the machine has been fine ever since.
It's worth getting it checked out.

I think the behaviour of closing the lid has changed between "before Lion" and "since Lion" - which OS version do you have? There is a free utility called InsomniaX that help control this behaviour - see http://semaja2.net/archives/206 for more info.

From what you describe, the computer is going to sleep.
Have you restarted and reset the SMC?

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

- Charge the iPod for half an hour. Then reset the iPod:
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- if still not working, connect to your computer. If iTunes sees the iPod, restore the iPod.

Hi, I bought my macbook pro 13" (retina display) a week ago. I haven't configured the screen saver yet but today when I was using the apple tv to watch a movie already on my macbook hard disk the screen went black but when I touched the trackpad it came back but the Airplay would get disconnted.

It sounds like you are trying to use an external monitor with your Mac Mini but cannot get more than a gray screen. You can use the following steps to help troubleshoot the Mac side of things here:

Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.

In addition check your Energy Saver Preferences and make sure that your Display Sleep and Computer Sleep timers are properly set to get the expected results.
For example: I want my Display to sleep after 5 min and my Computer to Never Sleep so that I can choose when to sleep it from the Apple dropdown menu.

The problem occurs at a frequency of 1 every 2-3 days, sometimes more often than that. The error message that comes up is very complicated but contains some key words amongst which includes "kernel." This makes me believe that it's an issue with the video card, and was wondering how I can remediate this problem so as to get the normal function of my laptop back. If anyone can be of any help, I would greatly appreciate it.

I just got a new macbook pro and am attempting the setup proccess. Whe I turn the Macbook on the screen will turn white for less than a second and go black again. I have been charging the mac for about 30 minutes now, and the problem still persists, what should I do?

If you just got it and this is the first time you have turned it on the solution is very simple.
Take it back to where you bought it and exchange it for one that works. Don't bother calling Apple. Take it back.
