MacBook Pro 2009 stuck at startup, can't enter Recovery Mode, any ideas?
My Macbook Pro was working just fine until about a week ago when it froze and I had to do a force shutdown, then entered Recovery Mode and it seemed to work well after that. I got it back up and it was working until today when it froze again and I did another force shutdown, now it won't even do into Recovery Mode. I read on here that it might be a fan problem and cleaning it might help, that didn't work.
While it is booting up the upper left area gets quite hot, any ideas what could be causing this? Can I still salvage the stuff on the hard drive? Do I need to bite the bullet and just try and get a different machine?

All of a sudden the screen on my 3+ year old macbook pro has blurred badly - I can hardly read the words - any ideas?
You likely didn't erase the ENTIRE drive of the later OS X operating system before installing Snow Leopard. You just targeted the Macintosh HD partition.
Try again, this time make sure to select the name and size of your boot drive at the top to catch the hidden EFI partition that's responsible for the splash screen at boot time (no screen = white)
It will take two reboots to reset the EFI again, so once Snow is installed and reboots, reboot again.

The wireless internet card in my macbook pro 2009 is damaged, where can I have it replaced or is there any alternative way so that I can connect to wifi?
ThanksReally? The AASP I went to services both Macs and iPhones (and was actually within that list,) and I was very surprised earlier that they refused to help me with repairing my iPhone 5, even if I voluntarily and expressly said that I am willing to pay for the cost. The service provider said he can't help me with anything and advised that I have it shipped to Singapore (and since that is very difficult for me now, I came here instead to ask for advice).
I will try another AASP very soon and shall update you. Thanks for your help, Clinton! -

My MacBook Pro suddenly started freezing. Getting error code -5010D. Any ideas?
Yesterday I noticed my MacBook Pro started freezing up for a few seconds when doing easy tasks, like typing a FB message or browsing. It doesn't seem to be related to anything I'm actually doing, which makes me think it's a hardware problem. I can restart my computer and nothing changes, I can restart in safe mode and same thing, I have run disk utility and it came up with no errors. As the day went on the problem got worse, I started backing up my files to a thumb drive and it was takin forever! I was moving about 45GBs and it was going to take 6 - 8 hours. I was just going to leave it transferring over night but when I set my computer down it apparently got unplugged. No big deal, except now the same 45GBs says it is going to take 14 days. My computer is on it's way out fast! I transferred just the important stuff and ran the hardware test on restart (cmd + r). It shoots back the error code 5010D. I don't know what this is for and can't seem to find anything helpful online. I am currently reinstalling Mavericks after a hard drive wipe, but it's been running for over three hours and it's not even close to being done. I don't think it is a software problem because even after a full format, it's still running slow. I just want to know what piece of hardware I need to replace. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A little Googling seems to indicate a hard drive problem, which sounds right given the symptoms you're seeing. Make sure you've gotten a good backup of everything. The good news is hard drives are cheap and easy to install. You can look up the procedure for your machine at ifixit.com.

The MacBook Pro 2,2 is a 15" Core 2 Duo from Octomer 2006-June 2007
It only has a mere 1.5 Gbps SATA 1 connection which won't realize the performance of the SSD which is better suited to a SATA 3 connection at 6Gbps. So basically you put a Ferrari engine into a Yugo.
My advice is to return the SSD and get a 7,200 RPM hard drive, is backwards compatible with your older SATA 1 connections and also provide more storage space and speed you require for that machine which has a maximum RAM limit of 3GB (4GB has to be installed, 2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM modules in two slots, see OtherWorld Computing or Crucial.com for Mac verified memory)
What occurs with that model is there is a lot of memory swapping to the drive due to the 32 bit processor and it's 3GB RAM limit, so your thinking a SSD would speed things up is correct, however your SATA 1 connection is the bottleneck.
So your resigned to using a 7,200 RPM hard drive which will give the same performance as the SSD in your case due to the slower SATA 1, it's the best you can do.
Also, older OS X operating systems 10.6 and earlier have trouble installing on with SSD's a it's a new storage device, there is supposedly some more hoops to go through to enable TRIM etc. as the installer doesn't know what it's looking at when it see's a SSD, but it does with a hard drive.
For that machine, even though OS X 10.8 can be eventually installed on it, it's not advised due to it's vintage age and slower CPU and graphics capability. 10.7 and 10.8 are bloated for newer mor powerful machines, thus it's only going to be a wasted effort and costly for a machine about to die shortly.
For the best OS on that machine (with current security updates) would be OS X Snow Leopard, which you can get the $20 or so OS X 10.6. white retail disk still from Apple online store.
Read:
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
For Snow Leopard Speed Freaks
Why is my computer slow?
IMMO a 7,200 hard drive and 10.6 updated to 10.6.8 is the best, most cost effective solution as something else is going to croak on the machine in the new few years.
10.8 will let you run iCloud etc., however the machine will be so slow and you will have to buy all new versions of software for a machine that's only going to expire shortly.
Run 10.6.8 on that machine for the next few years until the wheels fall off, Apple has got your back with security updates still until it drops to like below 10% OS X market share.
If you require to run iCloud etc., then buy a new machine for that, don't waste your effort going to 10.8 on the older machine, use it for backup purposes. -
Hi all,
I was planning to use bootcamp to install Windows 7 on my mid-2010 21.5" iMac.
Bootcamp recommended I usk disk utility to repair the drive. I had a snow leopard install disk in the drive, (I didn't realise Lion already had it's recovery tools built in to the hard drive.)
Disk utility said it can't repair the drive and recommended I start backing up my data (because the hard drive could be about to fail). Fine, so I restarted, with the intention of backing up everything (all my work for the last 12 months). So I press the power button, grey screen comes up, then the apple logo, then a progress bar appears (found this odd at first, but later found out it has something to do with disk utility and a bad hard drive) it gets to around 20% and then all power is cut from the iMac and the hard drive stops/everything powers down.
Now, I can't seem to get my iMac to boot into recovery utilities or into safe mode because it doesn't connect to the wireless keyboard in time before it shuts down. So, if I use a wired keyboard (I have a dell USB keyboard that I can take from the office), will I be able to boot into safe mode?
Also, if the disk in drive is causing the problem, then I can't remove it because the wireless keyboard won't connect/register any keypresses.Ok so, status report:
Wired keyboard is non responsive when I plug it in before/during boot. So i guess it needs to be plugged in before the iMac shut down. That's that out the window.
Plugged in headphones and I can't hear the startup chime so don't know when to start holding buttons.
To make matters worse, the wireless keyboard is no longer paired with the iMac, getting a green blinking light which indicates it wants to connect to a computer or device.
So I can't enter any commands whatsoever, can't remove the disk in the drive or boot safe mode. It's my worst nightmare. -

Hey treasure hunter,
I found some help for when your computer won't turn on. Try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory
Reset the SMC.
If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).
Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

My Mid-2010 Macbook Pro is stuck in a crash loop after recovery
Yesterday I have used Internet Recovery to restore Mavericks after trying out the Yosemite beta. Didn't have an extra drive for a TM backup.
Anyway, since restoring Mavericks I have an endless loop of crashes, wifi won't reconnect automatically after sleep, fans are on all the time and ReportCrash is using 100% CPU. Looks like there are 4 processes crashing.
I haven't found a solution online anywhere as it seems it's connected to Yosemite somehow, possibly some files from that are broken now. There was one case on some Chinese forum with the same issue, but no solution.
I haven't tried reinstalling again.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
You may need to do a firmware update in order to do a full Internet Recovery: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery -

Can I install only Windows on my Macbook Pro 2009?
Hello All,
For reasons far outwith my control. i.e. I am in the middle of borneo, needing desperatly to get on a full windows machine... I need answers to the following?
I have full gen versions of Windows 7 and MS Office 2010. I want to run these on my 13" MacBook Pro 2009. I know, boot camp, VMware etc are all great. But i can't at this time get those working.
I think, the best option is to just buy a HDD, remove the old one, install fresh copy (of win) onto new HHD.
However, my question is - will this work?
Thanks
CraigAs TheSmokeMonster indicated, you'll need to use either virtualization or BootCamp. BootCamp prepares your system to allow Windows to be installable on it (it also provides the drives for some of the hardware which may not be found elsewhere). Virtualization runs in OS X, so that should be a non-issue. Keep in mind, all firmware updates are only via OS X, so you would not be able to update your firmware unless you have a functioning bootable external OS X volume.
BootCamp does basically give you a full Windows machine... it just allows dual booting between Windows and OS X.
