MacBook Pro 2010 15" Slow - Crashes
Hello,
My MacBook Pro Mid 2010 is acting very slow.
Seems like it acts up when accessing hard drive (when booting, for instance). I'm seeing a lot of the rainwbow wheel, and now, apps started crashing. This is very unusual, as Macs are always so stable.
Any idea what I could do? Should I reformat everything and use a Time Machine backup?

I'm kind of a newbie here, I don't know how to perform those steps. What I did, based on a forum discussion, was:
- Reset PRAM and NVRAM (Command+Option+P+R on startup, until I heard the booting sound three times);
-Restart in safe mode (hold Shift during bootup);
-Run Disk Utility in Safe Mode (Command+S and then /sbin/fsck - fy in the command line).
I am running Lion, although these problems were already present before I upgraded.
Can you give me more detailed instructions on how to perform the steps you mentioned?
I don't know if this is important, but the app that crashes more regularly is MSN Messenger. I thought it was just because MS apps crash no matter what, but today I decided to install Adium for IM instead, and it crashed twice on me already.

If it isn't put it back if you must, but there's no point trying to look for another cause till you've eliminated this one. You have a huge amount swaps which is what is causing your slowdown. 90% chance that's your AV software doing that. -

Yesterday my Macbook Pro (2010) was really - really slow (happens more often, but yesterday was terrible). So slow that I couldn't open/close any applications. I shutdown my Macbook using the on/off button to restart. Rebooting (SLOW) opened the utilities screen, not OSX Mountain Lion (with all latest updates installed). Utilities couldn't find a startup volume. I tried disk repair, estimated time left was 8 hours, but it stopped after 2 hours "Cannot repair disk, format & recover from a backup". So I formatted my disk and recovered from a Time Machine backup (too bad my last backup was 3 months ago).
Now my Mac is still terribly slow and quite unstable. Yes, I have access to my files now, but a regular task that normally takes 5 minutes (like burning a DVD) now takes about 5 hours. Any idea what is wrong? I already made an appointment with a Genius, but I'm not sure whether he can fix this...
Hope you can give some suggestions / tips to fix this, thanks!Sounds as if your hard drive has failed once and may be failing again. Go to your genius appointment and if they recommend replacing the drive, get an estimate but remember that you can DIY for less.

MacBook Pro 2010 Very Slow Startup for computer and Programs
My MacBook Pro is very slow start up and sometimes fails to. also when using Safari computer will freeze. when opening and closing programs it can take up to 15 min. this all started in the last two weeks. I have also had to update Yosemiti a lot in the last couple weeks. Is there issues with the updates or is there something more going on?
Post an etrecheck report back here, which may give us some clues.

Macbook Pro 2010 Running Slow and Pulse/Click Noise (Not Hard Drive)
Hello. My 13" Macbook Pro mid-2010 (7,1) suddenly began running slow and lagging on certain operations. There is also a light pulse/click noise coming from the center of the keyboard. I am sure this is not a failing hard drive. How, you may ask me, am I so sure??? Well, I originally thought it was a failing hard drive and so replaced the hard drive, and there was absolutely no change, and the lagging and noise still continues. This makes it very frustrating to do basic, low-memory-intensive things like browse on Safari or watch a movie.
I have upgraded to Mavericks, and have 8gb Ram. This problem started suddenly about a month after upgrading to Mavericks. In fact right now my computer is lagging just typing this, Activity Monitor says I am only using 2.75 ram of 8gb.
Steps I have taken with no resolution
-Replaced the hard drive
-Reinstalled OSX Mavericks
-Verified and Repaired Permissions (I still get a message the the following item can't be repaired "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent". But I have read that this is a common thing and can be ignored.
-Restarted the computer holding down left shift-option-control and the power key for 10 seconds (not sure exactly what this resets, but some type of system cache thing.
-Reset the PVRAM stuff ( I restarted the computer holding down command-p-r. I'm not sure I did this correctly as it went to the firmware disk repair screen.
Could there be a RAM issue? Does RAM start making noise when it goes bad? I bought my upgraded ram from ebay, it isn't the official Apple Store stuff. Could replacing the ram possibly help? My System Report tells me the RAM is OK.
Putting a message on here for help is the last step before giving up. I can't do much with this computer because it is hiccupy and overall difficult.

I know there are other threads on this subject but they now seem very bloated and confusing. My 2010 MacBook Pro has ground to a halt since installing yosemite. At first the speed was bearable but now its completely frustrating, I have done all the things suggested in other forums, PRAM, SMC etc. I have attached the etrecheck report (seems to be a **** of a lot of red stuff in it) and if anyone can see anything glaringly obvious I would appreciate the feedback or any other help that can be offered.

MacBook Pro 2010: very slow wireless connection
I know a number of people have posted similar questions, but I think I've done everything I can to fix this.
I bought a 13 inch MacBook Pro last week, and found I was getting a very slow connection to my wireless network. OK when I was right next to the base station, but very slow in another room (the room I want to use it in).
I checked with speedtest.net, which showed I was getting download speeds of around 0.3 Mbps - although, curiously, it showed upload speeds of 1.5 Mbps. I ran my old MacBook in the same room, on the same wireless connection, and consistently got speeds of over 10 Mbps. So it can't be the network that's causing the issue.
After an hour on the phone with tech support, I took the Mac back to the Apple Store, where I was unable to get any wireless connection whatever. They exchanged it for a new machine. Worked fine in the store - but when I got it home, I was still getting very slow speeds. The old MacBook still outperforms it by at least a factor of ten. All the system software is up to date.
Is this a dodgy batch? Or has the wireless range dropped considerably with the new MacBooks?

You're right - there are a lot of issues about MBP WiFi. I think there's a major problem with it.
If there was a ..."major problem with it" you would see more complaints than wifi just being among the top 10 discussion items in a trouble shooting forum. There are millions of MBP users many of whom, like myself, use wifi every day without issue.
Your statement "They exchanged it for a new machine. Worked fine in the store - but when I got it home, I was still getting very slow speeds." would lead one to suspect maybe interference from some source or a configuration issue rather than a "major problem".
You probably already tried changing the channel, resetting your router, changing the security scheme, elimination possible sources of interference, separating your components (router, computer, external monitor, ...), etc. but maybe starting over with a default configuration will help isolate the problem. -
Macbook Pro 2010 Model Keeps Crashing.
My macbook has had a history of restarting randomly like this. Recently i got it fixed (new HD and new Graphics chip) and it's been working fine since then,Up until last night at least. I am very frustrated and fed up with these problems and it is costing me a lot of money.
I was wondering is anyone could tell me which part i need to replace/ is there any point replacing any more parts.
I have a 2010 model running the latest OS (yosemite). 2.66ghz Intel core I7 processor , 4gb memory , Intel Graphics HD chip 288mb.

Here is the crash report for the last time it crashed. I should mention it does not always give a report at all or even say it's restarted.You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by a recall program that has now ended.
Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present.
You may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.

My macbook is very sow since I installed Lion, what can I do?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the time of the most recent boot when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time when you had the problem – the text, please, not a screenshot. For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time. If the problem is a crash or a shutdown hang, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down.
If there are repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included – edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search the archived log, and if necessary the older ones below them, for the same information.

Do the same with kernel.log.
Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please do not post shutdownStall or hang logs – they're very long and not helpful. -
My Macbook Pro 2010 17" keeps crashing even though it's all up to date. Help!!!!!!
It crashes all the time.
I got it back from the apple store yesterday after they repaired the disk and wiped it. Still doing it.
Downloading 10.8.2 now to see if that's going to help but i'm doubtful.

Bad or incompatible RAM is the most common cause of KP's. It could just need to be reset……. to make sure there's a good connection.

Macbook pro 2010 keeps crashing
hi,
it has been a good 2 weeks that my macbook pro 2010 13in keeps crashing. It can happen during games or even during light browsing. When it does occur i can hear the sound being looped in the backround. Ive brought it in to apple twice already and they cant seem to reproduce the problem. The temperature doesnt seem to be an issue because even light browsing 50C it crashes. I have to do a hard reset to get it working and sometimes it doesnt recognize my drive or the apple logo boots and after some time it has an O (nothing can load, kinda like no smoking signs with the barred cigarette). Occasionally it also has wifi problems, it disconects and does not reconnect unless i hard reset. All these problems also occur on the windows partition (same circumstances). Please i need some help because i have work and i cannot trust an unstable computer to do work on. 2010 Macbook Pro Running Very Slow

And about a year ago I found that they performed better with Mt Lion (10.8) than Mavericks. Each version of the Mac OS has required more memory than the version that came before it and that means that every couple of years the minimum acceptable RAM is increased. Apple signaled this quietly at the Apple Store - only one computer now ships with 4GB of RAM. (And I can tell you from personal experience that in that configuration it is not fun to use.)
Bottom line: you need at least 8GB of RAM or an SSD. Both are better. In the meantime run as lean a machine as possible. MacKeeper is a waste of money no matter what anyone might tell you. At best it is not necessary and is a waste of money. -
How to Solve Windows 8 Metro App Crash on Macbook Pro 2010 13"
There is a known problem

that many notebooks equipped with nVIDIA GPU and running Windows 8 will crash some Modern UI (Metro) apps,
including Game, Camera, Remote Desktop, ... apps.
My MacBook Pro 2010 13" has an nVIDIA GeForce 320M.
I installed Windows 8 Pro RTM gotten from DreamSpark Premium and Boot Camp Software 3.2 on my MacBook Pro.
Unfortunately, I met the Modern UI app crash problem.
I fought against this problem two days and almostly surrended.
Unbelievablely, I could solve it.
Yes. We can simply solve the crash problem by installing the latest 301.42 driver download from nvidia.com.
But it is not perfect: we will find we can't adjust the brightness anymore.
I also tried many methods, including modifies .inf files and change permissions but all are failed.
Except one for which I got an idea from Windows Event Viewer.
I found I got an error event when I launched the problematic Modern UI app. For example,

The steps to solve the crash problem and simultanously preserve the brightness adjustment function are:
1. Download the latest 301.42 driver from nvidia.com. Then, click it to extract files to C:\
and we don't install it.
2. Copy the Boot Camp nVIDIA driver files from "13-inch MacBook Pro Mac OS X Install DVD,"
ie. this folder:
(DVD drive):\Boot Camp\Drivers\NVidia\Vista-Win7_64
3. Replace the older nvd3dumx.dl_ with the newer one.
I.e. overwrite
Boot Camp\Drivers\NVidia\Vista-Win7_64\nvd3dumx.dl_
by
C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\301.42\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver\nvd 3dumx.dl_
4. Follow this tutorial to turn off driver integrity check:

and reboot.
5. Install the modified driver by clicking
Boot Camp\Drivers\NVidia\Vista-Win7_64\setup.exe
6. Reboot your computer and good luck.The method described above is too complex.
I found a more easy way to solve the Modern app crash problem.
That is to download the legacy driver 296.10 here

2010 Macbook pro is running slow in Mavericks. Do I need more than 4gb ram?
My late 2010 13" 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro is running slow since upgrading to Mavericks. I currently only have 4gb of ram. When I boot up It takes quite awhile (nearly 5 minutes or more) before the system is usable. Or it takes almost as long to switch to another user. Once I let it sit, it runs fine. I'm mostly using Safari and possibly MS Word at any given time. I looked at the Activity monitor and I believe I'm using aboiut 3.6 - 3.9gb of physical memory and over 4gb of virtual memory. Swap is using 0 at all times.
Do I need more RAM? Wipe my drive and do a fresh install? I'm reluctant to do the latter, because I don't want to have to reinstall all of my apps (even witha TM backup).
