Macbook pro 2010 crashing on Mountain Lion

Hello all,
I have a 2010 Macbook Pro. It used to run perfectly but now it keeps crashing since I upgraded to Mountain Lion.
I saw many threads here about the graphics board and how downloading gfxCardStatus will "solve" the problem.
I found a new thread saying I should download the NVIDIA driver (http://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDownload-March2009/confirmation.php?url=/Mac /Quadro_Certified/5.0.37/cudadriver-5.0.37-macos.dmg&lang=us&type=Other) to solve it, I did and still crashes... it just crashed once I turned off gfxCardStatus (see report below).
1- Can anyone tell me if this problem has been fixed or not?
2- What can I do other than getting a new board? (Because when I had Lion, it would never crash.
3- Will downgrading to Lion or Snow Leopard solve it?
I know there's a few threads about this, but none of them seem to give a solution (IF there's any).
Thanks

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000

                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
             com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bringing the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Macbook Pro 2010 killed by Mountain Lion

First post here, so hi everyone...
    MBPro 2010 w/Crucial m4 SSD
I downloaded ML on saturday, and went for a clean install. I used a 8gb usb thumb drive to make a bootable usb. Restart, command+R, erased the SSD (partition mac os jounaled) and then installed ML from the thumb drive.
By that time my time machine backup drive wasn't recognized by ML, so without knowing exactly how time machine recovery worked, I restarted and press again command+R, this time I went for Restore from time machine backup just to get back to snow leopard, my last full backup... So from that point, I just reinstalled ML from the ML installation app, all my apps where there, but the crashes started real soon...
For no reason, every now and then, my mbp was just randomly restarting. I think this is called Kernel panic. There wasn't any particular app open that I could trace to the problem, this was happening even without "any app running" ( geektool, sophos, wd manager, displaypad were running at the top bar though) so instead of removing one by one, I assumed there was a problem with my installation/restore/installation method, and I went for a clean install again.
So today I went to my office, Restart, commad+R again, partition 1, clean installation, great!!! Download all my apps from the MacAppStore and some third apps like VLC, and everything was fine until tonight. I use a kodak software to capture x-rays from a sensor, the program won't run on ML so I decided to get a second partition for windows (32Gbs) just to use this software.
Just in the middle of the partition process, my mbp decided that it was the perfect moment for a kernel panic!! Boom! Restarted!! With a half partitioned disk I lost the bootdrive and the screen turns black with a DOS like message: no bootable drive, please insert a bootable drive and then press any key...
Restarted, grey screen, restarted, command+R and now, as I write this, my mbp is on internet recovery mode.
I have read similar problems here but I don't know if this is a common issue. I'm not happy with this, I need my computer because I teach with it, and the only reason I went ML was to get ibooks author.
Hope this issue gets resolved soon.

Internet recovery is done, restart, everything back to normal, and the bootcamp partition was there.
So I deleted the bootcamp partition and tried to set it up all over again and I'm back to square one, grey screen with apple logo, no loading wheel.
Comand+R again, internet recovery again. Something is wrong my SSD or my bootcamp assistant, so THE LAST PART of the post above HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MOUNTAIN LION if i'm right.
I guess I wont be able run my xray software on this computer and will have to get a PC just for that.
Well hope this thread helps someone anyway. I will let you know if the crashes continues.

Can anyone recommend a portable USB 3.0 drive with hardware encryption, compatible with OSX Mountain Lion and Windows 7.  I need it for my MacBook Pro 13”, 2012, running Mountain Lion & Windows 7 Ultimate - BootCamp.  I’ve heard that the Buffalo MiniStation Encryption does not work with OSX, is that true..?  I'd like it to work with both operating systems, using the built in hardware encryption.  Thanks

No. The architechture is too old. I think Lion will be as far as you can go, as a guess without knowing your specs. But if the machine cannot run Mountain Lion then there is no way of doing it (short of replacing the mechanics which would be more expensive than buying a more up to date Mac)

I have to input a password to log in to my Macbook Pro Santa Rosa under Mountain Lion. Now suddenly the built-in keyboard doesn't work at all so I cannot use my computer. I also notice that the bluetooth function is activated automatically even though I turn it off. It looks for an external keyboard. Please help me out. Many thanks!

I have the exact same problem trying to use the Remote app on both my iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 with either my Mac or ATV2.  My Remote app used to work on my phone - I can't recall if I ever actually used it with my iPad, but when I tried today, I got all the same results as you did (on both iPad, and then iPhone).  I  was using my ATV2 to play music from iTunes on my Mac and wanted to use the Remote app, but it would not connect to either device no matter what I did.

  • Macbook Pro runs slow using Mountain Lion?

I have access to use a Macbook Pro which is running Mountain Lion. However, the MBP runs very slowly and the coloured wheel is constantly spinning with almost everything I try to do. I do not know why and would like to be able to have a normal running MBP.
I wondered whether installing Yosemite might help? Or I have read some posts about resetting the System Management Controller. Please can someone give me some advice as to what to do that will work?
    Thank you

Installing Yosemite will probably NOT help.
Slow MBPs usually are a result of a failing HDD, third party software (often so called 'cleaning' or 'performance' applications) or unnecessary AV software.
SMC resets are good for certain hardware issues and will also probably NOT address the issue.
Download and post an Etrecheck report which may provide some clues:

I rebooted my macbook pro recently and downloaded mountain lion. Afterwards iPhoto dissapeared and I canr seem to restore it. Any suggestions?

Rebooting is the same as restarting. That should not have any effect on what software is installed on your machine unless something is very, very wrong. Do you mean that you erased the hard drive and installed Mountain Lion? If so, you will also need to reinstall iPhoto. What system did your machine originally ship with? If it came with disks, you can reinstall the iLife apps from the Applications disk.

    Hi,
I have the old MacBook Pro. Upgraded to Mountain Lion which completely wrecked the system. So downgraded to Snow Leopard.
Then updated the combo update. Now stuck on blue screen at start-up.
Need help. Greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Macbook Pro (2010) crashing

    Hi,
After a year and a month of no problems, my macbook pro has crashed 3 times in 2 days. The screen gets that black wave, like a blind coming down, and then turns black. Twice a notice came up telling me to turn the computer off. The other time,it was just the blind thing to a black screen.
The first time, I was watching a streamed TV show. I turned it off and on but, although the power button was on, nothing else seemed to be working. Instead, it gave out 3 longish beeps every few seconds.
I left it for a couple of hours and then it turned on ok.
As soon as I tried to watch a youtube video, the same thing happened. But this time without the beeps.
I left it for a few hours again, and again it turned on fine.
This evening, I was downloading files from Fileserve and it crashed again. And the beeps are back. I'm going to leave it overnight but i'm worried the next crash will be the one that kils it.
I really hope this is something I can fix at home. I have a work deadline for next week and can't afford to have the computer in repair for the next few days.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!!

Unfortunately, this cannot be fixed from home. Back up your data (if you still can, or if you already use Time Machine), and take it in. Fortunately, it is something that can be replaced while you wait, and won't take days.
