Macbook pro (2010) having graphical glitches after Mavericks update

What is your take?
graphical glitches appear and disappear randomly. Didn't have them before Mavericks update!
Thanks a lot for the help

15” MBP Mid 2010 models have been recalled for GPU issues.  See https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5681.
Official Apple statement: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of this Knowledge Base article and go to an Apple store or Apple Authorizes Service Provider with your machine and the documentation.
Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ .
or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider https://locate.apple.com/country
If it has been three years since your date of purchase then you are past the date covered by the recall but sometimes they honor it anyway.

  • MacBook Pro 2010 crashing / kernal panic after Mavericks update

After we  updated our MacBook Pro (late 2010) to mavericks, it has a kernal panic crash not just on wake/sleep, but also when a program is opened (usually 2 or 3rd program).
it happens when plugged in and when unplugged. I have tried a few of the "fixes" but nothing has helped. Doesn't seem to be the power issues some have sugested. Also, doesn't appear to be a HP issues others have also had.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

  • Macbook pro very slow few weeks after Mavericks update

    Hi,
Please I am in need of assistance. I have noticed some significant performance degradation after my OS upgrade. Slower system, spinning wheels, hanging and once crashing and restarting. I used to be able to run many apps simultaneously while zipping along. These days not so much.
I have run an etrecheck (following the example found in some other discussions). Please see output below. Any suggestions or advise is very welcome:

  • My macbook pro 13'' boots very slow after mavericks update, and after booting its loads for a long time

Processor:     2.9 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory:        8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    HDD:             1TB (5400rpm)
    Graphics:       Intel HD Graphics 4000
    OS:               OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes   after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entirecontents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Macbook pro 15-inch, Mid 2010 crashing very bad after mavericks update

    Hello Community,
I updated my 15-inch, Mid 2010 macbook pro from snow leopard to mavericks with the gratis update that appeared one day in march i believe. Since then its been crashing sporadically with the simplest of actions like creating a new folder. I thought it was due to some peripherals USBs (which sometimes helped when unplugged) but now i cannot single out anything.
I must admit I am not really knowledgeable when it comes to software fixes, but i will try to do anything you recommend can help. (really would like to avoid a clean sweep of HD...)
    Thank you all in advanced,
Here is a copy of the latest panic report:

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may have a logic-board defect covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they should still be covered.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

You might want to consider pairing waaaay down on the User Login Items.
Having all of these apps launching at startup/login is probably slowing down your Mac's startup time AND having all of these apps running in the background is both eating yo CPU cycles and RAM.
    Add or remove automatic items
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
    Do one of the following:
Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.
Google apps  like Chrome and Drive may still not be playing well and are NOT 100% compatible/compliant with OS X Mavericks.
Until Google releases a proper fix or official update for OS X Mavericks, completely uninstall these Google apps.
If you do not like Apple's Safari Web browser, as an alternative, try using Mozilla FireFox.
Mozilla constantly updates FireFox and just released a new update recently and is ,usually, more stable on OS X Mavericks.

  • 13 in macbook pro (early to mid 2011) : after the update, computer freezes with spinning wheel every 30 seconds first with safari and now with all the applications. I don't have any programs installed and still had good enough memory on the RAM.

After the update of my 13 in mac book pro (early to mid 2011) , it freezes every 30 seconds with the spinning wheel and now it just freezes. Ive never had this problem until I recently updated. Also, I just checked now for available update ( which there was one), the update would process till the last step and it shows it cannot be expanded? Now my computer wont even restart (just have a grey screen with a cursor). Can someone please tell me what the heck is going on with my computer?
I also checked the memory and it showed available memory was over 1.5 GB. I dont have any programms installed and do not have backup yet ( dont really need it anyways)
Problems: first with spinning wheel every 30 seconds and now whole computer just freezes when I restart, it only shows grey screen after the starting sound or it takes about 8 to 10 minutes to restart.
This ALL happened right after the update with google chrome crashing. I know my apple care plan expired so I cant even go to genius bar. Do you guys know how much it would cost to get it fixed ? Or any recommendations I can do to fix this?

    Try a smc reset:

I just got it back after a warranty case where something on my old Logicboard died after 8 weeks after purchase. I bought it this June. I have that Nvidia graphics in there. Here is a pic I made: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42689244/IMAG0090.jpg

What is an SMC reset? The gfxcardstatus worked. Partially. I now know something is either wrong with the nvidia graphic card or its software(the hd 4000 one is better from a performance test by individually testing both cards).
How does the apple exchange work? Just walk in with the Mac and they resolve/replace the Mac or what? Any ideas?
    Thanks

The reset is a little tricky and might take a few tries before you do it successfully, keep eye on for the colour change on the magsafe connector

Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  Take copy of the display image with you just in case the MBP starts behaving in front of the technician.

  • MacBook Pro freezes every 15 minutes after Mavericks upgrade

After upgrading to OS X 10.9.3 my computer freezes every 15 or so minutes in the middle of working.  The keyboard and touch pad stop working and the mouse curser disappears.  I'm using Ableton audio software and the audio will continue playing and looping normally but I loose any control to stop the audio or the program and I can not switch windows or even control volume.  The only way to stop it is to hold down the power button and reboot.  When restarting I tried pressing the command option +P +R through 3 whole sequences and still once I begin working again it freezes again.  This has never happened in the 5 or so years of owning this computer and everything worked great while using lion.  Only after installing the new upgrade of OSX did it start to do this.  Any help would be appreciated.  I live far away from any Mac store or Genius Bar.

Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • MacBook Pro hangs in gray screen after security update

I just allowed software update to download and install the latest Safari update and Security update 2009-6. During the restart my macbook just hung on the gray screen with the spinning gear.
I've tried starting in target disc mode but the iMac doesn't register the MacBook's HD.
I started from the install disc (10.4.5) and launched disk utility but it won't read the HD either.
I tried Safe Start-up, resetting PRAM but still the hang.
    HELP

If not for the coincidence of a restart after those software updates, I'd say
you need to get a correct version of Disk Warrior and see if it can repair
or rebuilt the hard disk drive's Directory; since that is a likely item to have
been corrupted somehow. And corruption of data, including the System,
is a serious matter. A near-capacity or over-full hard disk drive can cause
odd issues including corruption; so there may be more going on in the Mac.
Other third party disk utilities may be able to help get into the failed computer
and the problem is likely the hard disk drive. Sometimes, a software issue in
a drive can related to a hardware failure; so to consider a strategy that may
include a new drive for the computer and an external enclosure for the drive
that is now in the failed computer, to then maybe further your recovery of data
    if it comes to that.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Macbook pro cooling fan runs continuously after software update

I updated Mountain Lion last night (Mar 15, 2013). I forgot the version number, but it was 10.8.? I think.
After restarting the computer this morning, the cooling fan suddenly shot up, making crazy noise. It didn't come back, so I had to turn the computer off with physical switch. While the fan was running, battery was draining so fast. I began with 100%, but went to 65% in 45 minutes. Such thing never happened before. I did not run the computer with complicated Apps when it happened. I was using Safari and Logos Bible software. Does it have anything to do with the new software?
It is quiet right now, after restarting. I paid more than $2k for this computer last fall. Didn't have any problems yet. But it happened all of a sudden. Anyone has any idea??

Next time this should happen try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If no success, look at Activity Monitor to see if you have a 'runaway process' and terminate it if not required by the OS or perform a restart.

  • I have a MacBook Pro and a Canon MX452. I updated the operating system on my MacBook to Yosemite 10.

I own a Canon MX452 and a MacBook Pro (2010 model). This week I updated the MacBook operating system to Yosemite 10.10.3. Afterwards I found the printer / scanner functions would not work. I re-loaded the CD from the printer and was also prompted to download more currrent drivers from the Canon website, from which I chose the ICA Driver V4.0.0 and the Canon IJ Network Tool V4.5.0 (not sure if these were the right ones or not).
I managed to only get the printer working when using the USB cable to the printer. I could not get the printer and scanner working wirelessly. The printer blue light shows it is connected to my network ok. I also noted my iPad and iPhone can no longer "see" the printer either.
I have deleted and re-loaded the Canon software several times. I have followed Canon instructions to:
-Connect the MacBook to the router with an ethernet cable and go through the instructions to "connect" the Canon MX452. But afterwards, the MacBook says the Canon MX452 is "off line" and I can only make it work with the USB connection.
Any guidance would me most appreciated to:
-get the printer and scanner working wirelessly
-getting the Air-Print feature working with the iPad and iPhone
    Thanks
    Stephen
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi John. Thanks for that input. At Step 6, after clicking "Next" I get a window telling me my OS version is unsupported and the installation may not complete. I am prompted to go to Canon's web site to "Check Latest Info".
I've had this window on previous attempts and from Canon's web site I downloaded two drivers as follows
    - ICA Driver V4.0.0
    - Canon IJ Network Tool V4.5.0
I'm not sure if these are the correct / complete drivers I need for this install or not.
I continue to follow all the steps. At step 9 I click "Wireless Set Up using USB" amd get a License Agreement (a little different than instructions)
I click "Agree" and it goes to a Setup window with two progress bars showing the installation. I've not been prompted to connect the USB?
After the Setup window is done, I am then prompted to connect the printer via USB. I connect the printer and click on "Redetect". It is not detected.
I then try following the Canon on screen instructions for connecting to the wireless LAN amd enter the password. It searches and indicates "Connecting" on the window, but it never connects and the blue light just blinks
So, at this point I am stuck??
    Thanks
    Stephen
