MacBook Pro 2011- Allowed updates to install for iTunes software and Microsoft office (I think).  After rebooting, computer wouldn't progress past grey apple screen with loading circle.

I have a MacBook Pro 2011.  I allowed updates to install for iTunes software and Microsoft office (I think).  After rebooting, computer wouldn't progress past grey apple screen with loading circle.  No progression bar ever appeared.  It just sits and spins.  I tried rebooting with Command + Option + R + P and hearing the chime twice....this did not work.
I also tried Command +Option+R which took me to internet recovery.  From there, I chose reinstall Mac OS X Lion 10.7 but it says my hard drive is locked so I wasnt able to select it.  What do I do???? Help!  I don't want to lose my files and it doesnt appear that I've used Time Machine Back Up.

I you upgraded to OS X 10.8, then use RecoveryHD by holding Command R at boot time (no option) and reinstall OS X over itself that way so your installing  Mountain Lion.
Also Disk Uility can be used to Repair the Macintosh HD parttion.
Also you can use that RecoveryHD to format and install OS X onto a external drive, then option/alt key boot from it and access your files on the non-booting internal drive before erasing, reformatting and reinstalling OS X fresh.

  • My Macbook Pro will not load past grey Apple screen...

Last night my Macbook Pro froze so I closed it and went to bed. Today when I opened it, it was still frozen, so I held down the power button and rebooted it. It got as far as the grey Apple screen with the spinning wheel and will not load any further than that. I've rebooted a couple times since and it continues to do the same thing, stays on the grey screen forever.
I searched this problem on the Apple Support Communitites and none of suggestions (holding Shift after the startup tone, holding Command+R) have worked so far. Is there any way to fix this problem without losing my data or having to pay to talk to Apple Support? PLEASE HELP! :(

Then we can't help you as we need you to be able to help yourself and the instructions are complicated and long to paste here over and over again for the same proceedure.
Hire the services of a local Mac computer repair before you delete your data by accident.
You can jump down and do #8, that might clear the issue right away, but some programs are not going to work and require updating or reinstalling again.

After Update to 10.5.8, stuck on Grey Apple screen with turning gear... and it just stays there...
Apparently I can't safe mode it
Started it in verbose mode and it say disk02 i/o error
Then I restarted it in single user mode, did a sbin/fsck -fy and it says that:
    *files have been modified*
    *REBOOT NOW*
I reboot and still the same problem.
When I put in the install disk it says *cannot install in this drive* (was thinking about archive and reinstall, but I suppose not ) then when I repair and verify, it says All seems OK
    Yikes. Yikes!
    Please help.

Well, I brought to the Apple Store's genius bar. Can't say enough about the experience... they archived and reinstalled... tried everything else and like sometimes happens, transfer of data can become corrupt in a spot that just makes things go haywire. So the Archive and Reinstall worked like a charm.
Moreover, they replaced my Macbook's top board casing (don't know what else to call it..) (where you rest your hands to type) it was cracked and stuff... not under warranty, but they will replace it free due to design ... I am impressed and pleased... *and me? I am a cynical critic* still, they made the experience as painless and certainly pleasant as possible.
For all who are having problems, I urge you to not damage the wall any further with continuous headbanging: make an appointment and definitely visit the Genius Bar. Your head will thank you

  • MacBook stuck at grey apple screen with spinning logo

I have a 2010 White MacBook that is stuck at the grey apple screen with a spinning logo. This seems to have happened after I installed the newest version of iTunes. The system slowed down a lot and when I ran the system monitor It said all of the memory was being used up. I had to force shut down by holding the power key. Upon reboot, I got the grey apple logo screen, a spinning wheel, and a progress bar. The progress bar gets about a quarter of the way and disappears. The spinning wheel remains. Initially, I let it run for awhile. Nothing different happened. I took off the Mac jack adaptor, and replaced the battery. Nothing happened. I kept trying to start it up and one time it worked. I backed up my files to two external hds via time machine.
Upon the next boot, i have been stuck at the grey apple logo screen, spinning wheel, and progress bar. Each time the progress bar remains and then disappears after going about a quarter of the way. I have tried cmd-D, cmd-s,cmd-opt-p-r, cmd-v but I don't think any of those work (I don't know of i'm doing them right) . It just stays on the grey apple logo screen. I tried using the option button at the startup and it goes to a lock screen. I typed in the administrator name. That didn't work. I tried the apple password. That didn't work. I tried every password that I know. None work.
What can I do to fix this?
    Thank you.

See if this Apple note will help. When it gets to Disk Utility, boot holding the command and r keys down so you get into recovery mode, and run Disk Utility from there. Assume you have OS X 10.7 or later. If you're still on OS X 10.6, then follow directions to boot off the OS X DVD sent with your system or a retail OS X 10.6 DVD.

While you're in itunes, with the leftside window open, click on Apps. Then, look across the top middle of your itunes screen. You will see several choices: All, Iphone/iPad Touch, Ipad, Ipod Games, List, and Updates.
Clicking on each of these gives you a different view.
When you select ALL you will see all of your apps. When you select Updates you sill see only the apps that need to be updated. When you are in Updates you will see the Update button in the lower right corner.
    Hope this helps.

  • MacBook Pro: Tiger wont boot past grey apple screen w/ spinning gear, HELP!

    Hey everybody,
I have a 1.83 Ghz MBP with 512 mb of RAM (lame I know). The other day someone was using my computer to burn a CD on iTunes when all of my programs began failing. On instinct I rebooted my computer to solve the problem. Alas, now I cant boot past the grey apple screen, and the gear is spinning away. Saddest part of the story is that I had time set aside to back up my computer the day after this happened . Anyway what is the best thing to do from here? I haven't made any moves to fix it yet really, so what is the best thing that I can do to try and get my files back?
    Thank you,
    Sam A.

Hi, I posted to you in yoour other thread.
I very much doubt Disk Utility or fsck will fix an +Invalid Node Structure+ error. That's a pretty serious error and DU is just not robust enough of a utility to repair it.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Cheers! DALE
p.s. If the +Invalid Node Structure+ is real bad, there's a risk even the mighty DiskWarrior will not be able to help. Normally it will come thru; it's only in the severe cases it won't be able to do it. If you don't have a backup, and need the data bad, it's worth the try!

  • My macbook air wont go past the apple screen with the loading circle.

My Macbook air (Early 2008 edition) Boots up fine, but it stays on the apple screen with the loading circle for a few minutes and then shuts down. I did the Command+v and it always stops at the same spot with:
    disk0s2: I/0 error.
    (see picture)
I have already tried pretty much all the commands while booting up possible, and to no avail.
    Please help.

Sorry for delay been super busy at work - have you tried to boot to your operating sytem disc - by inserting the disc  - then power down the unit - then power it up again while holding down the C key until you see the gear start spinning.  Once it comes up - go to utilities at the top of the screen - then disc utility - then selcet your hard drive in the left hand pane and then on the right hand pane select first aid and click verify disk in the lower right hand corner - your hard drive may be failing and this test will let you know if that is the case. If so you need to backup your hard drive - replace it and put your data back on the newly placed drive.  - please let me know how the verify disc goes

  • MacBook Pro A1297 ... re-install for sale

    Hi,
    I am planning on selling my MacBook Pro A1297 17" Laptop - MC725LL/A (2011)
but I have misplaced the original factory install disk (snow leopard 10.6.6) that came with the machine.
I have been trying to locate those disc online to purchase, but with no luck.
Apple sells a retail copy of  Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, but I wanted to be sure that this version will work without issues for my machine.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard?afid=p231%7 Ccamref%3A11l4k&cid=AOS-US-AFF-PHG
Any assistence will be greatly appreciated.

The Mac OS X Snow Leopard disc sold by Apple includes Mac OS X 10.6.3, which is a version released before your MacBook and which is not supported, because the minimum OS X version supported by your MacBook is Mac OS X 10.6.6.
To get the discs that came with your MacBook Pro, call Apple > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Reboot, hold the option key down as soon as you hear the chime. When the Boot Manager appears select OSX instead of Windows.

  • Macbook pro is super slow overnight...upgraded software and still slow...thoughts?

I have had my macbook pro for about 5 years with no problems at all and then overnight it started locking up when I would try to open the internet.  I have updated my software (had not updated anything in 5 yrs...didnt want to jinx anything) and that seems to have made things worse.
Is there something that I should be "cleaning" out?  I really only use the computer for internet and pictures.

And thank you for replying with that information.
To summarize, you are experiencing degraded performance on a MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Core Duo and it appears that you have enough RAM and physical HDD space for the OS to function normally.  The fact that you have near-idle CPU utilization is also good.
You have also performed Software Update (which is a good thing, but I recommend in the future to always do it incrementally as they are delivered).  And performance has gotten worse since doing the updates...
    Some things that might help.
Reboot the computer (there may have been some patches that could use a bounce)
Launch Disk Utility and run a 'Verify Disk'
You may also need to run a 'Repair Disk'
I think we can save you from having to buy a new Mac, unless you want to
