MacBook Pro 2011 i5 SSD Upgrade w/ Yosemite

Hello all!
So I'm a part time YouTuber who enjoys using photoshop and editing videos mostly 1080p and 720p, but basically I'm always mobile and I don't get to use my Custom Built PC as much as I'd like so I was wondering would it be worth buying a MacBook Pro i5 2011/12 for around £500 and buying a 240gb SSD for it for around £75, the specs of the MacBook are:
4GB RAM (Upgradeable)
250GB SSD (If I install it)
i5 Processor (Sandybridge 3rd Gen I think)
Mac OS X Yosemite
Any thoughts on this? Would It be a good laptop for editing on and all?
I've looked up the SSD and it apparently supports TRIM so im guessing it would support OS X Yosemite, its a Kingston 3K 240GB SATA III SSD

Apple removed OS TRIM support from 3rd party SSD's within Yosemite. The debate is on about which SSD manufactures use Active Garbage Collection (aka TRIM) and those that depend on OS TRIM support.
There are many who are going to remain on OS X 10.9.x until this issue is further considered by Apple.
In the mean time, search Google for Yosemite SSD TRIM and you will find out a lot more about what's going on. That said, Upgradeable (i have no affiliation with them) indicates they're all using Crucial SSD drives with Yosemite without issues. Link below if you're interested!

MacBook Pro (2011) 13" keeps crashing with Yosemite 10.10.2

My MacBook Pro8,1 (early 2011) "Core i7" 13" started crashing after I upgraded and installed the free Yosemite 10.10.2 from Apple. Has anyone else with a similar model MacBook Pro laptop experienced this problem in general? Problems with Yosemite started soon after the upgrade install... the startup would get to full boot up after several restarts then crash after a time. At first I thought it was a conflict with other applications. Then after days of trouble shooting and even changing to a new Samsung EVO 250 SSD the problem still recurred repeatedly. I have re-installed the original install CD numerous times checking disk utility, partitions, etc. and got Snow Leopard 10.6.6 installed OK. Then I would update all that I could clicking updates on the Apple menu icon up till OS 10.6.8 and some other applications. Up till that things seemed to be OK. As soon as I downloaded Yosemite OS 10.10.2 and installed it...then all the crashing problems began. I could get into safe install every now again then restart only to get in a startup crash loop. I've repeatedly check my new SSD with disk utility and volumes are OK. I've run virus checks with no infection. I've run a hardware test (provided on one of the original CDs) with only good result. So I'm really baffled when my understanding is MacBook Pro of my vintage can accept OS 10.10.x as it doesn't appear to be OK on my laptop. Perhaps it clashes with my virus checker (MacKeeper) or some other application. Can anyone shed light on this problem or have a similar problem?

You probably have some software that you keep installing that is not compatible with Yosemite. The first thing you need to do is remove MacKeeper, which is a scam. See:

Beyond that, it's impossible to say what might be causing the problem without more information. I would suggest downloading EtreCheck:

Macbook Pro 2011 - running slow after installing Yosemite

Can anyone help me - my late 2011 Macbook Pro is running very slow since installing Yosemite. Also my Microsoft Office for Excel is not allowing me to type into cells - I can copy and paste but not add new text.
I have run the Etre diagnostic app (as suggested on another thread) and these are the results I get. Can anyone help - or do I have to uninstall Yosemite and how would I do this?

No Sound, Safari Slow & MacBook Pro Very Slow after upgrading to Yosemite.

Hi All,
Upgrading to Yosemite has resulted in the following issues with my computer/laptop:
1. I have lost all sound and the sound options are no longer there after looking in Preferences.
2. Safari only loads parts of pages and then takes forever to load the rest.
3. Generally the computer has been slow with processes taking over the CPU and there seems to be a lot of hard memory swaps.
Attached is the EtreCheck.    Any help would be appreciated.   It appears that I also am missing some daemons that are launching.

Macbook Pro 2011 Toshiba SSD

Hello! I am just wondering whether about the stock SSD that comes when you customized your Macbook Pro from Apple is a Toshiba HG2 SSD which is a 2010 Model? I was pretty disappointed about the performance of the SSD, it seems to be on par with my Intel X25M SSD which is a year ago. I could buy a better SSD with double performance, double write and read rate with the same amount of money that i topped up to get the SSD straight from Apple.

You can manually enable TRIM or use this to turn it on. This will work with any SSD on a Mac. Also, if you buy an SSD with a new SandForce 22xx controller (like an OCZ Vertex 3), I was told by their support that you don't even need TRIM turned on in a Mac. The controller has "garbage collection" and DuraWrite technology built in it and this will take care of wear leveling to keep performance like new. Apple SSDs don't even come close to this. Like I said, you are buying last year's technology.

How do I permanently erase my entire MacBook Pro 2011?

I am giving my Mac to somebody and don't want any recoverable traces of me to be on my computer. It's a MacBook Pro 2011 13" but it has Yosemite 10.10.1

Before Selling or Giving Away Your Pre-Lion Mac
Deauthorize your computer from iTunes, if applicable.
Back up your data using Time Machine or other backup methods for OS X Mavericks or Mountain Lion.
If you use Find My Mac or other iCloud features on this Mac, complete these steps:
Back up your iCloud content.
Choose Apple Menu () > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
Deselect the Find My Mac checkbox.
Sign out of iCloud. When you sign out of iCloud, you're asked whether you want to remove iCloud data from your Mac. Removing iCloud data in this way makes sure that the data isn't also removed from any of your other devices that are using the same iCloud account.
If you're using OS X Mountain Lion v10.8 or later, sign out of iMessage:
In the Messages app, choose Preferences > Accounts
Select your iMessage account, then click Sign Out.
5. Follow these steps for installing the original version of OS that came with the computer.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
         with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
         After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
         a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.

Try a Safe Boot to clear the dyld_shared_cache (dynamic loader cache)
SafeBoot http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
Safe Boot, which automatically rebuilds this cache (among other things).

Macbook Pro 2011 running very slowly after upgrading to Mavericks

I am in deep trouble with my wife so any help would be gratefully accepted.
Shortly after Mavericks became available I upgraded my wife's Macbook Pro 2011 to use the new OS version. Ever since then, the Macbook has been running noticeably slowly. In particular, Mail is almost unusuable taking minutes to open and showing long delays while moving around messages, folders, etc. Excel and Word are also much slower, Safari is slow, in fact just about everything is grinding.
Any ideas on what can I can do to improve things and apease my unhappy wife would be much appreciated.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

1. It depends on what Mac model you have. If it's incapable of running Yosemite, installing an intermediate version won't help with that.
2. You'll lose the ability to run PowerPC software, and some other programs may also be incompatible. If something goes wrong, you might lose data; back your computer up first. There aren't any issues specifically associated with skipping versions.

Good question now that Mavericks is free to all.
It used to be - and is probably still the case - that to comply with the license you should erase and re-install the OS that came pre-installed on the Mac when new. If there were restore disks they needed to be passed on with the Mac.
I'm happy to be corrected on this by someone who's more au fait with the legalese, but an upgraded OS is tied to an AppleID whereas the original OS is tied to the computer, not an AppleID.
My guess is, that if you launched the Recovery HD, erased the drive using Disk Utility and re-installed the OS, Lion would be installed.
Be interesting to see what others say.

Some drawbacks, you can't boot from any OS (OS X or Windows) installer disk from a external optical drive the Superdrive goes into when you install the kit.

Macbook Pro (2011 Model) suddenly does not boot from SSD in main bay

I have been using Macbook pro 2011 and Samsung SSD (256GB) for about a year.
All of sudden, the computer will not from SSD from the main bay, but it will boot from the optical bay.
I have tried an Intel SSD 120gb which came with the computer, but it does not work either.
However, it will boot from the regualr hard drive from the main bay.
I have read somewhere that it could be due to the hard drive flex cable.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

It may very well be a problem with the SATA cable... for some reason (and I don't know why, but...) SSDs seem more prone in 'detecting' a faulty SATA cable than a standard hard drive. Where a hard drive will boot, an SSD will not.
I would advise purchasing a new SATA cable - from ifixit.com or powerbookmedic.com - and replacing the cable. That (normally) clears up the problem.
