MacBook Pro 2011 suddenly slow, battery draining etc

My computer crashed end of December 2012 right before vacation. I went to the Genius Bar, diagnosed as a "software issue".  Had computer erased and started over.  Upgraded to Yosemite while out of town. When I came home, I transferred back data from Time Capsule with Migration Assistant.  I have talked to Apple 4 times and given 4 different answers (remount Time Machine, reset PVRAM, etc).  Read through this thread but I don't see what to do. Here is my EtreCheck.  Seriously I need help because this is my work and school computer and it needs to be fixed. Do I need to get more ram? Battery health says good but it seems as if its draining seriously fast.   And I hear the fan coming on a lot more.
Problem description:
My system is constantly moving slow and programs take a while to open.

Select each of the items shown in RED in Activity Monitor. Click on the Quit icon in AM's toolbar then click on the Force Quit button. You only need to do this if you are unable to quit the programs in the normal way - Make the program the frontmost application, then press COMMAND-Q.
You also have two items in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder. They should not be there. You can remove them. HP should have updated software that replaces the older driver. I'm not sure about the TiVo item, but it should not be installed in that location.
You should check the Classroom Enrichment application for compatibility with Yosemite: See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
As for your backup needs I would suggest this:
Repartition the Seagate backup drive. This removes all the Seagate software. If you want more control over your backups than provided by Time Machine see the following options:
Suggested Backup Software
  1. Carbon Copy Cloner
  2. Get Backup
  3. Deja Vu
  4. SuperDuper!
  5. Synk Pro
  6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. You can download free trial versions of all six so you can try them out and decide on the one you prefer before paying for it. I am a big fan of Carbon Copy Cloner, but that does not mean it's your best choice.
Now given all the above consider that you can always use Time Machine. But until you get your computer straightened out I would refrain from making a backup. There's no point in restoring a malfunctioning backup made of a malfunctioning computer.

  • My Macbook pro 2011 suddenly has a really slow bootup. What can I do?

My Macbook pro 2011 suddenly has a really slow bootup. What can I do? I did install a cannon printer upgrade and security upgrade. Not sure if it was something to do with that. Also I tried the disk utility repair and didn't improve anything. I also reset PRAM and SMC.

    1. Try booting in e Verbose mode - press and hold [cmd] + [v] keys just right after the boot chord sounds till you get a black screen and white letters.
if there are some delays in the boot process  -  you should see where the system is stuck.
this mode is not permanent - the next [re-] boot will be normal.
    2. repair permissions. disk utility does fine. Disk Warrior is better.
sometimes after half done updates (it may happen though should not) there are items that are "belonging to someone else"
    3. try  cache cleaner (or there are some other utilities as well - I just like SlCC  more)  http://www.northernsoftworks.com/snowleopardcachecleaner.html - it's shareware though the basic functionality is free for you to use.
Try caches -> deep cleaning (please read the developers site what it does) and select checkmark at all options - reply yes to the requests and after a reboot the next reboot should be as it is intended.
p.s be sure you do have backup

My MacBook Pro is suddenly slower...is there an easy way to check for viruses?

OpsMgr have methods which can get all host classes. Here my own function which can solve your issue:
    function Get-SCOMClassProperty {
    param(
    [Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Configuration.ManagementPackClass]
    [Parameter(Mandatory = $true)]
    $ManagementClass,
    [Switch]
    [Parameter(Mandatory = $false)]
    $KeyOnly
    function Get-SCOMClassKeyProperty {
    param(
    $ManagementClass
    $ManagementClass.PropertyCollection | ? {$_.Key}
    If ($ManagementClass.Hosted) {
    Get-SCOMClassKeyProperty -ManagementClass $ManagementClass.FindHostClass()
    If ($ManagementClass.Base) {
    Get-SCOMClassKeyProperty -ManagementClass (Get-SCOMClass $ManagementClass.Base.Id)
    function Get-SCOMClassAllProperty {
    param(
    $ManagementClass
    $ManagementClass.PropertyCollection
    If ($ManagementClass.Base) {
    Get-SCOMClassAllProperty -ManagementClass (Get-SCOMClass $ManagementClass.Base.Id)
    $ManagementClassProperty = Get-SCOMClassKeyProperty -ManagementClass $ManagementClass
    If (!$KeyOnly) {
    $ManagementClassProperty += Get-SCOMClassAllProperty -ManagementClass $ManagementClass
    $ManagementClassProperty | Select-Object -Unique
If you need to do it in SCOM 2007 R2 then you can try my scripts from this examples http://systemcenter4all.wordpress.com/2013/05/15/scom-monitoringclass-functions/. Last should work in 2007 R2 and in 2012. Example in thread will work only in 2012.
    For example just run command:
    New-SCOMManagementGroupConnection
    $ManagementClassName = "Microsoft.SQLServer.Database"
    $ManagementClass = Get-SCOMClass -Name $ManagementClassName
    Get-SCOMClassProperty -ManagementClass $ManagementClass -KeyOnly | select Name

  • Macbook Pro 2011 extremely slow wondering if hard drive failure

Hello, I want to start off by saying I'm not a huge computer guru, so that is why I'm coming here first. My Macbook Pro worked very well for a year, and then it has slowed down drastically. I've always been a windows user so mac is kind of foreign to me, but I'm trying to learn.
Some problems I've encountered are 1. Extremely slow running whether internet related, or just an application. I have checked the activity monitor and nothing is hogging up my memory. 2. Spinning wait cursor (rainbow circle) when I try to do ANYTHING. It takes minutes to start computer once it makes it to home screen. The circle just spins for a few minutes. Even just web surfing it's there. 3. Battery drains from 100% to less than 20% in 30 minutes, which again is annoying. 4. When battery drains the fan turns on and seems to drain battery even faster. 5. I get a lot of random errors forcing shut down of programs. I have ignored this problem for two years by not using my laptop or using it very minimally, but I am going to be needing a laptop again for school and not just my iPad and phone so I was planning on taking my macbook to genius bar, but wanted to check here first since Apple is an hour away. Plus I want to be able to use the piece of equipment that I spent a decent chunk of change on. I used time machine to back up everything today. I know its not a space issue as I have 300+ free GB on hard drive. I have tried to read through similar posts, but its overwhelming so I came here to post my own question.
I ran disc utility and there were some errors, which were able to be corrected after a couple tries. Computer still slow though when trying to do anything and running rainbow circle.
In recovery mode I reinstalled OSX
I was finally able to install updates after completing the above that were not able to be installed before.
I ran etre check, this is the report that came up:

Basically I'm wondering if anything sticks out in this report. I was thinking it could be a possible hard drive failure. I know my computer has been dropped on the floor at least a few times. Thoughts are appreciated. Thank you for your patience.

Eab, I feel your pain! I am replying simply to share my similar ongoing experience with my early 2011 17 inch MacBook Pro, running Mavericks with seeming ample hard drive space, [applications requiring less than 100GB, about 200GB data (total drive space of 500GB)] & 4GB RAM. (Disclaimer: I am not a wise or computer-savvy mac guru - simply a fellow traveler who has had a very similar set of problems - apps taking forever to load, rapid battery depletion & super overheated MacBook.  While I am a Genius Bar groupie, getting to the Apple store is, for me, akin to an antarctic polar expedition (i.e. problematic). Having spent endless hours struggling with a similar issue, I offer you a synopsis of my struggle/experience.
    STEPS TO DATE:
1.Installed several memory utility programs (Daisy Disk &  MacCleanse) system
maintenance program to regularly and thoroughly empty application caches (Adobe apps & internet browsers being tremendous hogs), identify and remove language elements and other redundant space hogs, etc.   Result: Small, but real improvement when I forced myself to perform a "scan and delete" session every second major computer run (typically about 6-8 hours in length). However, this did nothing to help the problems regularly detected when I run the Disk Utility which almost invariably demonstrates disk permissions that need to be repaired and, with increasing frequency, has demonstrated actual disk errors that require restarting and walking through a disk repair protocol. I did bring it to the Genius Bar where they kindly reinstalled Mavericks which they could do in about an hour versus the several hours that doing this at home requires.  This did identify that my RAM was, on fact, a limitation on the speed at which I could run certain apps.
    2. My next move was to install an additional 4GB of RAM. I bought the new RAM on eBay for about $90 because, with 3 kids equipped with MacBooks & iPhones, I simply couldn't afford the official Apple RAM. I even installed it myself, with the help of a YouTube video. Result: Giant improvement in speed (starting up or switching apps. If I had realized how simple it turned out to be, I would have done it well over a year ago. Some minor improvement in the overheating problem, but persistent problems with disk permissions continually requiring repair and periodic disk repairs (using Disk Utility) required.
    PLANNED FINAL INTERVENTION:
    3. I am purchasing and installing a solid state drive (ssd) and simply chucking the original hard drive, after considerable discussion with my savvier mac friends. It has become clear to me that, sadly, every hard drive has a finite life affected by a variety of factors. I am, in fact, hard on my equipment - running multiple graphic apps simultaneously, transferring massive GBs of data between my laptop, time capsule and an array of hard drives. I will let you know how it goes, but can share that the decision to get a solid state drive followed many conversations with multiple Mac guru-types (in the hope of saving you similar painful tribulations). The cost varies according to the size of the drive, but $400-$500 would buy a reasonable starting size. I am waiting for Black Friday sales, myself. Amazon (where I will likely purchase the ssd) is already offering a number of pre-Black Friday deals.  While I don't really feel like putting out that amount of cash, I reassure myself that a new drive will almost certainly solve the disk errors (with a solid state one offering more durability) & will help me prolong the life of my MacBook Pro by a couple of years hopefully. It beats buying a new Apple MacBook only three and a half years after investing close to $3k for this one!
I am certain that more experienced forum users could point you to software that could help defragment your drive or may be able to offer other solutions. I've simply had enough of struggling with burning thighs and head-banging behavior triggered by slow performance. I hope this is helpful to you in some small way.  The war is not yet over, but I'm feeling good about the battle plan!

  • Macbook Pro 2011 Very Slow for Yosemite 10.10.1

    Good night,
My macbook is very slow when I power supply to retreat, even 100% loaded this causes problems.
Applications are slow to open, the mouse is slow, loses performance.
The battery was recently replaced. I've had this problem in OS mavericks and was Kernel_task problem, but now do not know what to do to stop this slow using only the battery charged.
    I'm using the Yosemite 10.10.1
System Specification: MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011)
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3
When I remove the charger, the system rises to 90% usage ...
    memory:
    Physical Memory: 4.00 GB
    Memory Used: 3.95 GB

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
Part 1 of 8 done at ... sec
Part 8 of 8 done at ... sec
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. Wait for the final message
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the last message you saw. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Macbook pro 2011 running slow

    Problem description:
my computer has been running ridiculously slowly to the point I am wondering if I am supposed to be upgrading to a different computer?  Applications, documents, everything takes forever to open. Also Microsoft Word crashes pretty often. . . Then I ran the EtreCheck and am now fully freaking out from the multiple red lines reading FAILED. I am not at all computer savvy . . . I saw on another thread that I should uninstall Mackeeper? I have attached my EtreCheck info below for my system. But honestly, is this something I a very motivated novice can tackle or should I be taking the device in some where to get repaired? Is the latter is the case, where do people recommend? Geeksquad at BestBuy or the Apple store? I am at a total loss and my computer is my livelihood . . .
Thanks in advance for the support and direction!

It's no problem. That's what we are here for.

This is the one I would recommend. It is relatively inexpensive and supports Firewire 800. Plus, it is swappable so once you remove your existing hard drive, you can just plug your old hard drive in there to restore your files. When you buy a new computer at some point, it will support USB 3.0. Should you need to buy another hard drive for additional backups or archives, you can just plug it in. I have an external drive very similar to this and it is very useful. Your machine does not support USB 3.0, so you would be on USB 2.0. Your machine does support Thunderbolt, but external Thunderbolt drives are much more expensive. For a backup drive, that isn't critical.
Since you are doing a major swap out of components, make sure to turn Time Machine off on your current system before you start. Do one last backup, then turn Time Machine off. You want to keep your existing backups in pristine condition until things settle down. Once you have restored onto your new hard drive and everything looks good, you can turn Time Machine back on and point it at your new hard drive.
Post back if you have any problems.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 - running slow after installing Yosemite

Can anyone help me - my late 2011 Macbook Pro is running very slow since installing Yosemite.  Also my Microsoft Office for Excel is not allowing me to type into cells - I can copy and paste but not add new text.
I have run the Etre diagnostic app (as suggested on another thread) and these are the results I get. Can anyone help - or do I have to uninstall Yosemite and how would I do this?

  • Macbook pro (2011) running slow on Word?

When ever I run Microsoft Word on my macbook pro, esp. publishing layout view, it runs super slow. When I add a picture to the doc, it spins its wheels. When I want to print, it spins its wheels. Please help, thank you.

I suggest you post your question on Microsofts own forums for their Mac products as it's their software you're having issues with:

  • Macbook Pro 2011 too slow for FCPX?

I have a MB Pro 2011 i7, 2 ghz processor and recently upgraded to 16gb ram for my video editing. im using fcpx but I didn’t see much difference when in terms of speed when I upgraded my ram from 4-16gb when I’m using this program. I was just wondering if this is because of my processor?

Ram Does not speed up any process, but it alowes you to work with bigger files 16 gb (HUGE FILES) The program itself will not run noticebly faster by upgrading the ram. The processor does all the thinking. (making things a tiny bit faster tho) Video editing is all about the processor.
    That's why a processor cost 3-400$ and a 16gb ram cost about 60..
But then, you could upgrade your harddrive to a SSD! THAT my friend would certainly speed up every process in your computer, From boot time, to end time!
You can go a LOONG way with a 256gb SSD if you work with files up to 200gb, But you would have to have a external harddrive to store your files!
    SSD: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-sata_6_0_gb-2-5-Inch-MZ-7TD250BW/dp/B0 09NHAEXE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1353334079&sr=8-1&keywords=Samsung+ssd+256
    External HD: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STBV3000100/dp/B00834SJ U8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1353334112&sr=8-4&keywords=external+hd
NAS: http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-35887-StorCenter-diskless-Network/dp/B007DAJWXQ/ref =sr_1_24?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1353334196&sr=1-24&keywords=NAS+4tb  Then buy 4 or 6 tb harddrives and put them inside.
Also keep in mind: A i7 DESKTOP processor is about 40% faster than a i7 Laptop Processor
    Hope this helped

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Suddenly dying ! HELP !

    HI all,
Tried to open my Pro the other day to just access safari and it freaked a bit, first the trackpad cursor decided it was possessed and jumped all over the screen until it decided to slide the screen off to dashboard by itself and even when I plugged in a USB mouse it still freaked all over the place.
NO liquids of any type have been anywhere near the macbook by the way.
Next thing is the whole laptop almost grinds to a halt ! Crazily slow totally unlike it ?
Then to add insult to injury the screen starts looking flickery and red and lined / pixelated in areas and apps on the dock when selected bounce for ages and do nothing. So I looked at SMC reset, and PRAM reset also and these worked in the way that they were carried out correctly but still no changes.
I left it a week, the laptop goes dead ! Charge battery and leave on mains power, and now whole screen is fuzzy and doesn't even show anything normally ?
Please help help is it worth me taking it in for a repair or is it a waste of time ? and why all out of the blue ? This thing cost a lot of money and I'm now tempted to bin apple altogether as its let me down big time! !

Provided you can take all these, try it.
      Start up in Safe Mode.
      http://support.apple.com/kb/ph14204
Hold the option key down and click the battery icon in the menu bar.
      Does the condition say "Normal"?
Is there any Bluetooth device nearby with failing batteries? If so, replace the batteries.
Clean the trackpad with a dry microfiber cloth.
Close all windows and quit all applications.
Click the Spotlight -the magnifying glass icon- in the menu bar. Enter Disk utility in the box.
Select Disk Utility. When the Disk utility window opens up, select  Macintosh HD, then First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk  Permission
    Ignore the  time remaining estimate.
Last 1 minute may take longer.
    Run Apple Diagnostics.
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
Can you run EtreCheck and post the report here please?

  • Macbook Pro 2011 running slow - mountain lion

    Hi,
Since updating to mountain lion my mbp is running very slow,
Have repaired disk permissions and ran clean my mac but no improvements.
The hard disk is less than half full and no login items up on start up.
    What more can I do?

So it's the 13" (early 2011), MC700LL/A (2.3 GHz)? You can install up to 16GB of RAM in that machine, although Apple only 'officially' endorses 8GB. I run 16GB and find that I actually use up to 13+GB at one time - but I'm able to run many memory-hungry apps concurrently with no swaps, etc.
If I were you, I'd install at least 8GB - take a look at the Crucial site and click the System Scanner. You'll be offered the recommended upgrades.
As to a clean installation of the OS - I wouldn't really worry about that at this time. It doesn't sound as if you've an OS/software problem... there's no telling why your friend's MBP (the same as yours?) seems faster.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Macbook Pro 13 Extremely slow (early 2011)

    Hello,
My 2011 Macbook pro got really slow recently to the point where it's not usable. It takes minutes to boot up and then even opening finder takes 2-3 minutes of the spinning "beach ball". I currently have Mavericks on it, but the same problem exists on Lion and Mountain Lion.
Ive cleared (and reflashed) SMC, NVRAM, re installed the OS, replaced the SSD, battery and RAM and nothing makes a difference. Short of replacing the logic board I've tried swapping most of other parts and it make no difference.
Extended diagnostics show no errors, but during verbose startup I can see this error:
"ERROR: MMIO regMap == NULL - fall back to old SMC mode". No other SMC errors.
Interestingly Linux (Mint) runs fine on the machine and so does windows with BootCamp, but OS X is basically unusable.
    I would appreciate any help/pointers.
    Thank you
    Yuriy

If you reproduced the problem with a clean installation—no other software installed and nothing restored from a backup—and no peripherals connected, then it's caused by an internal hardware fault. You seem to have ruled out everything except a bad logic board, or perhaps a SATA ribbon cable.

  • Macbook pro 2011 battery question.

I got a macbook pro 2011, and I'm charging, draining and recharging the battery daily, i have the mac for almost 2 months and i have 75 cycles complete and the battery is on 92%, i want to know if I'm doing a good work charging the battery the way I'm doing it, or do i need to use another method, i work daily with this macbook pro in design, thanks in advance for the answer.

Honestly, I think you're cycling your battery a little too much. Apple recommends that you cycle your battery 2-3 times a week. So this means
    2 months = 8 weeks
    8 x 3 (cycles) = 24.
You should have roughly 24 cycles for the duration that you've had the computer, 75 is a little much for 2 months, don't you think?
I would strongly suggest cycling the battery only 2-3 times a week. Also, only do a FULL discharge every month. You should make the change NOW before you permanently damage your battery. I have the 2.3 2011 Hi res 15 inch MBP.
