Macbook Pro 2013 HDMI Monitor Goes Black for a few seconds

So I purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 2013 (specs below) and for the entire time I have been using it with a BenQ RL2455 via HDMI with no problems at all. Recently though I have started to experience problems between the computer and the monitor. There is no particular sequence as to when this will happen but the monitor screen just goes completely black for a couple of seconds, and then goes back to normal.
There is nothing to suggest that the monitor is being disconnected from the mac, as it still detects the fact that the two are still connected. I have followed each cable back to the source and they all seem to be properly connected.
As you can imagine, this is very annoying and inconvenient, and it would be much appreciated if anyone knows any solutions to this. I just thought i'd see if there was anything i could do before i contacted apple, just incase i was being a total idiot and missing something obvious!
Thanks!
Specs:
Macbook Pro Retina 2013

1TB SSD

15" or 13"? How long have to had it?
I've noticed my HDMI monitor comes up blank on reboot sometimes. Using a late 2013 MBP Retina 13" for a couple of days now.

If you  have AppleCare, call them.  Let them deal w/it.

  • Monitor goes black for a few seconds then recovers

This has been a great machine. Since 2014, the Monitor keeps going blank for 3/4 seconds then comes back. I have done my driver search and have installed the updated driver software but the problem persists. Please help. Bijou

Yeah, I'm using the HP2210m monitor to another computer with the same cable.  The end result is the monitor seems to be working okay.
The other monitor I test to my computer is a different type of monitor and using a different cable.  The end result is the other monitor stays up.
    Basically, here's the situation
    My computer (computer A)
My HP 2210m monitor (monitor A)
My DIVX cable (Cable A1), My VGA cable (Cable A2)
My Nvidia 560ti video card (Video Card A)
    My Windows 7 Platform
    Other computer (computer B)
    Other NEC monitor (monitor B)
    Other VGA cable (Cable B)
Other integrated video card (Video Card B)
    Other Windows XP Platform
    So here's the set ups:
    1) Computer A + Monitor A + Cable A + Video Card A = Monitor starts blinking
    2) Computer B + Monitor B + Cable B + Video Card B = Everything okay
    3) Computer A + Monitor B + Cable B + Video Card A = Everything okay
    4) Computer B + Monitor A + Cable A + Video Card B = Everything okay
I will try testing set up 1 (My computer) with Bios and Safe Mode.  I'm not even sure if my computer came with an integrated video card since I had the computer built with another stand alone video card (an ATI) before I switched to an Nvidia.  Just in case you were going to ask, I no longer have the ATI card in the machine and I used Guru Sweeper to completely remove all left over driver information from the ATI.

Cannot get iPad 2 charged beyond 1%.  All charging ports tried: AC adapter(s), USB 2 port on MacBook Pro. How can I get it to charge beyond 1% so I can proceed to troubleshoot?

I have had your exact problem with my old 3GS, now I cannot even get it to turn on, I still see that it is supposed to be charging though, but it never charges any so it seems.
I replaced the Lower Dock Connector Assembly back when it still charged while hooked to my PC, and it found it made no real difference.

At this point I am not sure if I should replace the battery and hope for the best, or just junk the phone, I cannot really sell it if I cannot reset it...

    Hello @bobbiy58,
I understand that your HP ENVY Recline 27-k150xt TouchSmart All-in-One CTO Desktop PC is going black for few seconds and coming back. I need to ask has this just started? Like since you connected your X-box? If so have you tried disconnecting the X-box to see if it stops?

  • My 2010 Macbook Pro will randomly go to sleep for a few seconds during use, before it starts itself back up again to keep running.  Any ideas?

I've had this computer for about a year, and only recently has it started doing this spontaneous sleep thing.  It will be working fine, and then without warning the screen will go black and all the lights will shut off for just a few seconds.  I can hear the fans stop running, and then several seconds later, the fans will resume running, the keys light back up, and the computer resumes functioning like nothing ever happened.  It happens at least once a day now, and I would like to know what is going on and how I can fix it.  Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

HAve you tried using a different power chord? If the power chord is not the issue, it could be the power supply inside your mac.

  • U3415W, randomly goes black for like 2 seconds?

Just got this monitor and I'm having the exact same issue. Goes black for like 2 seconds randomly. It's differently on the monitor side of things, as I have another monitor connect through DP(daisy chain) and the same issue happens on that monitor as well. Both random, but sometimes at the same time with each. My third monitor which is connected through DVI has zero issues. I have tried the Dell without anything else connect, but getting the same issues.
    Any ideas?

I am indeed, just a single mDP to DP was supplied. The issue was there with just that cable and the Dell monitor connected.
I have since turned off DP 1.2 on the monitor and the issue has gone away. Problem is that my graphics card supports DP 1.2, so that shouldn't have been causing any issues. (Sapphire R9 290 Vapor-X)
Dell support were support to contact be back again today so I can update them, but never got a call.

  • Voice Signal Goes Dead for a Few Seconds From Time to Time

I live in a rural part of Marin County that has poor signal:  one bar or less.  I've purchased a signal booster which has increased my bar level to 4 -- which is terrific.  What I'm noticing however is that the voice signal goes dead for a few seconds (5 - 10 seconds) during a conversation.  This happens every few minutes. Voice connectivity then returns for a few minutes only to cut off again for a few seconds and so on.  This happens if I'm inside my house.  If I go outside, it doesn't seem to happen.  I've turned the booster box this way and that but no change.  I've also changed the ariel this way and that, but no change.  What's up with this?  It's very annoying to be on a call and have the sound go dead.

  • Macbook Air only connects to the internet for a few seconds at a time.

My 2013 Macbook Air (10.8.5) will only connect to the internet for a few seconds. It recognizes the wifi, but will just timeout when trying to access a website. If I turn Wifi off and then back on, it will work for another few seconds, only for the same issue to come up. I've tried EVERY SINGLE troubleshooting tip I could find and nothing works. I've renewed DCHP, rebooted my Mac, rebooted the router, network diagnostics, everything. I've scanned with Sophos multiple times and nothing has been detected. My 2007 MacBook Pro works just fine on the network as well as my roommates Macbook and my Apple TV. I have no clue how to fix it and am praying someone knows what to do. Please help!

Start by getting rid of "Sophos," which is worse than useless.
Remove the Sophos product by following the instructions on this page, and also this one, if applicable. If you have a different version, the procedure may be different.
Back up all data before making any changes.

  • Using KVM causes MacPro's display output to go black for a few seconds

I have a Mac Pro plugged into a IOgear 2 port DVI KVM. The Mac Pro's other DVI output is plugged in, via VGA, to a second monitor that is not switched.
Whenever I switch to my Mac Pro, both displays go black for 2-4 seconds and then come back. This is not the most critical problem I have ever had, but since I rely on my KVM to quickly switch between computers, it is really annoying.
    Anyone have a fix?

I had a similar problem with an IOGEAR kvm recently. I have the IOGEAR 2 port DVI/USB kvm (model GCS932U), which I am using to connect my MacPro and a linux box to share a monitor and keyboard.
I was running into the problem that if I had the primary monitor connect to the KVM and switched back and forth, the MacPro would actually hang and be unresponsive. After contacting IOGEAR they verified that this was an known issue with Mac's. BTW - the IOGEAR tech support was very good.
Fortunately I have a dual display setup and simply connected the secondary monitor to the MacPro via the kvm while the primary monitor was, well, the primary monitor on the Mac. Problem solved.
This is a little tangential to the current discussion, but perhaps someone may run into a similar problem at some point.
    Cheers

  • Mini-DVI port: monitor goes black for a moment if wiggle the adaptor

I have an Early 2009 mini 2.0GHz, which I'm using with the included Mini-DVI to DVI adaptor.
I've discover that if I press down on the adaptor plug just right, the monitor flickers to black for a moment, as if the adaptor were pulled out of the Mini DVI port.
    I know: don't do that.
But it can also happen if the monitor cable gets tugged on just right (how I discovered it), and I'm concerned that the Mini DVI port may be loose on the motherboard, that it may get worse, that it may flicker intermittently without provocation, etc.
On the other hand, maybe this is just how the mini is built and I'll be wasting my time getting service.
So I'm hoping some of you can poke at your minis and see if it happens to you too.
    Instructions For Proper Poking:
º Have everything plugged in with computer and monitor on
º Press down gently on the plug that is plugged into the mini's Mini DVI port
º Try a little wiggle, press from the end of the plug where the wire comes out to get a little leverage, etc.
º Try gently picking the mini up a few times, so that the monitor cable is hanging down from the mini
It only happens sometimes for me.
    Thanks

So I just ran through the little test matrix you outlined in your first post with my Early 2009 mini. Result: no trouble whatsoever with intermittent connection. I would say what yours is doing isn't normal. Maybe some other people will try and report their results.
Mini DVI has been out there for a long time, albeit not on the Mac mini, but on other Apple notebook products. I have not heard that the connection is not "robust" ever. And I've been following the MacBook and MacBook Pro display forums for a couple years now.

If you just got it and this is the first time you have turned it on the solution is very simple.
Take it back to where you bought it and exchange it for one that works. Don't bother calling Apple. Take it back.
