Macbook Pro 3.1 looses power completely when battery at 6..9%

I recently got a new battery for my 2007 Macbook Pro 3.1. Whenever I'm running on battery, the Macbook gives me a warning at 10% remaining battery life and loosed power all of a sudden when reaching 6..9%. All work is lost, when I reconnect the charger cable the Macbook restarts completely and doesn't just wake up from sleep.
Questions:
- How can I calibrate the battery correctly if a complete shut down happens before reaching 0% (as I understand the calibration procedure I need to discharge the battery from 100% to 0% in one go)
- Can a faulty PRAM battery cause this problem?
- Can I check the status of the PRAM battery?
Thanks for any help
John

Shown below is the discharge curve of my A1275 battery (it contains 3 individual cells) vs. time. After 2h6min the hard shutdown occurs each time - at a 'remaining' capacity of ~300mAh.
The battery itself doesn't get calibrated to a lower value, it remains at some 5044-5090mAh when doing a calibration.
The true capacity seems to be only ~4600-4700mAh, but since the calibration procedure doesn't work successfully with this battery, the problem will persist.
Maybe there is a way to lower the battery capacity on purpose to a lower value. There might be a possibility with IO_reg.... (?)

  • Why has my MacBook Pro stopped saving state to disk when battery runs out?

In the past, when my battery was running low, I could carry on working safe in the knowledge that the system state would be saved just before the power completely failed. When power was restored, the saved state was restored and I could carry on.
Now it seems to just die and then I'm left to the mercy of any app-based autosave.
    What's changed?!!

Doubt your cpu needs any thermal grease... Upgraded my MBP (early 2010) to ML when it first came out, prior to this everything was working flawlessly and I mean one couldn't ask for anything more... After the upgrade it was total garbage with big time overheating, program crashes and a problem where it refused to come out of a deep sleep without a forced shutdown. One thing I never really looked into was how it affected the battery life but one can only assume it took a toll on it as well.
Needles to say I downgraded back to the originally installed OS X ASAP, thankfully we regained our original stability and sanity to boot with no ill affects on the battery. Have read countless posts about these problems and as of yet have not found a resolve to my issues, too gun shy after the experience to even think of giving it another whirl... Lost confident's in Apples ability to get it right as this was downright deplorable in my opinion.
Sorry if this wasn't much help but from reading your post you say "after upgrading" which sounds to me like all was fine prior to switching to ML, no point in tearing apart anything if that is not need.

  • MacBook Pro does not go into sleep when battery is exhausted

My MBP 2.4 GHz doesn't go into the automatic sleep when the battery is exhausted. I've only experienced this while playing Sim City 4 and I usually turn off the sound so it doesn't annoy others around me. I see and hear no warning--Sim city places the display into some other mode so the battery warning dialog isn't seen.
The machine freezes at that fateful moment for several seconds and then shuts off. I've presumed it was preparing for sleep but perhaps didn't complete before the battery was exhausted and the MBP lost all power.
My older PB G4 goes to sleep when the batteries are completely exhausted. Once connect to power and it wakes with a key press and all is restored.
What is going on here? Is it a battery calibration issue?

Could be a battery calibration issue, as calibration is how your MBP more accurately determines time to charge and time to discharge.
When did you last calibrate, and did you do so properly? (Charge to full, leave on AC for 2 h, unplug, use until it sleeps on it's own, and leave asleep for 5 or more h, then plug in and charge to full.)

Try a #1 SMC Reset and see the Apple links, if that doesn't work make a appointment for a evaluation.

  • Is it possible to virtually bypass the battery on a macbook pro (retina 2014) and power the mac directly via AC power?

Is it possible to virtually bypass the battery on a macbook pro (retina 2014) and power the mac directly via AC power?
E.g. Dell allows you to plug the laptop into AC power but prevent battery charging.
Note: I do not want to physically remove the battery.
If there isn't an option on Mac OS, is there anything I can download to bypass the battery when I want?

Thanks for linking me! Wow I had no idea the clock speed would be cut so severely! What a bunch of rubbish, as if the AC won't provide enough power!
I guess the only solution to my question would be an app which virtually disconnects the battery but tricks the mac into thinking the battery is still connected. I'm just surprised Apple haven't yet started to build prisons for the government - considering how well they lock up their software and hardware!

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • MacBook Pro constantly on AC power

I intend to get a macbook pro 13" and plug it to A/C source 90% of the time. I thought such behavior would normally shorten the battery life significantly due to overcharging. The sales person told me that the battery won't be affected in such manner since once the battery is fully charged, the computer will then tap power solely from the AC source only. However I couldn't find any official information from Apple that verify this claim.
does anyone out there has any information regarding my concern?
    Thanks

Well, I'm really happy to hear that, guys. I used my Toshiba laptop like that and its battery died pretty quickly. After having it replaced, I had to use it only for travelling, disconnecting it every time when running on AC power. That's why it bothered me a lot that MacBooks Pro had no way to disconnect the battery. So that's really very smart of Apple to prevent short cycles by never starting the charge at >95% of battery power remaining... Please correct me if I'm wrong but that means my battery's gonna be ok if I use my MacBook on AC power every evening (4-5 hours) and discharge the battery twice a week to keep its ions running! But there's one thing though. The laptop gets pretty hot on AC power, wouldn't that damage the battery? Or Apple has already taken care of everything and I really have nothing to worry about? Sorry or dumb questions, that's my first macbook

  • Can I use a US MacBook Pro with a UK power adapter?

Can I use a new US MacBook Pro with a UK power adapter? I am pretty sure I can as the output of the adapter says 100-240v, but would welcome any input other than my assumption! Many thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Yes the MagSafe can be used with any 100-240 volt supply, you'll get best results if you use a cable/adapter that has an earth or you might feel a tingle in your palms when using it ...

Trying to find it using the "find missing photos" in the library menu does nothing.

You could just try changing your Input Sources under System Preferences>Language & Text:
But I kind of doubt that's going to work. It may be a hardware problem or a system problem. If you take it into Apple they might be able to determine which and might advise a reinstallation of System software. I would take it to an Apple Store or an AASP but, first, make sure that you have a backup just in case they suggest a clean install of the system.
    Good luck,

    Thanks,
Yes, I did that. They have uppgrades for the dongles, but just untill Mac Os 10.7. Their solution is to buy a new modem from them or getting one for free if I sign a contract for 24 months! So, i think from that side not very helpful.
It is just that I do not want to buy a new modem, when it works in quite recent computers and after having spent money in the new Mac.
But thank you for your reply!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iphoto '11, version 9.4.2

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
