Macbook Pro 4.1 RAM Upgrade Issues

Hello Apple Community. I recently decided to upgrade the RAM on my macbook pro 4.1 (15", early 2008, 2.5 GHz). I purchased and installed 4gb of Mushkin memory (2x2GB PC2-5300 SODIMM), and the computer booted up just fine. When I go to "About this Mac", it still shows 2GB of RAM, 2x1GB. When I click on "More Info" the same holds true while specifically looking at the memory. For some reason my computer is reading each 2GB card as a 1GB card.
Any suggestions as to what may be the issue?
Thank you in advance.
PS. I've been searching forums and the web for the past 2hrs in hopes of finding an answer.

Okay, I will try this out. Previously I had done something similar to that which you suggested, which leads me to think that the RAM possibly could've been mislabeled and I was given 2GB (2x1GB RAM). I took one stick out and booted up the computer and my mac really took its time starting up. When I checked the "About this Mac" section it now said 1GB of RAM. I'll try again with both cards, but it looks like I will be sending them both back for replacements.

  • My Macbook Pro Freezes after RAM Upgrade

I have a newly purchased macbook pro that came with lion, MC700, with 4GB of ram Default. I purchased CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9 from newegg to give me 8GB of ram. After installing the RAM, if i use the macbook for extneded periods of time the screen will hardlock, graphics artifacting is seen on screen and it beeps, causing me to hard shut down the unit. This is most noticeable when using Youtube HD or watching a DVD movie. I ran apple hardware diagnostics and it says everything is fine, I also ran memtest overnight with no errors. Thinking this might be a corrupt lion install i reinstalled clean and still get the issue. I bootcamped windows 7 x64 onto the unit and it will BSOD and hardlock just like lion would. I used the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool and it said no errors. My return time has expired for both the macbook (purchased at a best buy) and the RAM (from newegg). I know i can contact corsair but I dont know if that will even help, any ideas? My system is up to date with the newest updates as well.

I forgot to put that in the OP, when putting back the 4gb stock it works fine, but doesnt solve my issue. THe ram tests fine, is the MBP just that picky? I know i can RMA with corsair but there really isnt anything wrong with said ram its like its overheating when the new ram is put in

  • MacBook Pro 1 GB RAM upgrade...which type?

    Hi,
I am interested in the MacBook Pro, but need some advice on RAM upgrades.
What is the difference between the 2 types of RAM offered on the Apple site?
    1 GB 667 DDR2 2x512 SO-DIMMS
    1 GB 667 DDR2 1 SO-DIMMS
I would only be able to afford one of these above options and would appreciate any insight that anyone could offer.
    Thanks much!

A Macbook Pro is only upgradable to 2gb and has only two SO-DIMM slots Ram ie. 2 * 1 GB ram modules.
    If you opt for - 1 GB 667 DDR2 2x512 SO-DIMMS - you use up both the slots(each with a 512 mb ram)
If you opt for - 1 GB 667 DDR2 1 SO-DIMMS -only one is used up. and one it still free.
and when you got the bucks for an upgrade, or when the OS is calling for one, you can pop one in. And max it to 2GB
    So, a 1 GB 667 DDR2 1 SO-DIMMS is the best deal.

  • Macbook Pro late 2008 Memory upgrade Issue

    Dear Gurus,
I have a late 2008 15" Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz  with 2 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 installed, I just brought a pair of corsair (2*4GB) DDR3 (CMSO4GX3M2A1333C9) memory upgrade and installed it in my macbook pro. I'm running OS-X Lion 10.7.1 before the upgrade now in About This Mac menu show that I have 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 and everything seem to be ok only when I shutdown and power up again the boot time seem to take longer than it is with previous 2GB memory module installed, it took almost 2 minutes from the power button pushed untill my macbook display the login screen. Question: Is the Ram upgrade is OK or I need to return the Ram and get the 1066 Mhz to replace my 2 Gb Ram. How can my mac report that I have 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Ram while the system only at 1066 Mhz bus
    Best regards,

RAM will clock back to match the system bus as long as it's otherwise compatible. Reporting utilities tend to read the RAMs design speed.
    It it works, ignore it.
As for this part of your question:
only when I shutdown and power up again the boot time seem to take longer than it is with previous 2GB memory module installed, it took almost 2 minutes from the power button pushed untill my macbook display the login screen.
that's normal. The OS does a "power-in self test" or "POST" at startup that includes RAM checking. The more RAM installed, the longer the test takes. You quadrupled you RAM, so the increase in start time does not surprise me.

  • MacBook Pro 4,1 Ram Upgrade

I'm attempting to upgrade my ram from 2GB to 4GB on an early 2008, 2.5GHz, 6MB L2, MBP. I've purchased 2x2GB, PC-5300, DDR2-667MHz modules and attempted to install them. After installing the two modules my MBP would not boot. I contacted the manufacturer of the ram and they suggested attempting to install one 2 GB module and one of the original 1GB modules. This configuration functions properly. Both 2GB modules have been verified as functional when used with one of the original 1GB modules and have been tried in both slots. Any ideas as to why my MBP will not boot with more than 3GB of memory ?

    Hi again,
Response from Centon suggests this: "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.6 "
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacBookPro_EFI_Firmware_Update_16.
    I don't think it applies.
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 3 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B00
    SMC Version: 1.28f1
Still at a loss as to why both modules won't work together. Centon advises that system should boot with only one module installed, I'll give it a try.
    Many thanks

  • Early macbook pro 17 inch RAM upgrade

its stated that the maximum recognized memory for this model (macbook pro 2.5GHz, 17 inch early 2008) is 4GB, but someone told me that with snow leopard installed, it will recognize 8GB of memory. is it true?

apple supports up to 4gb in these macs. you can install up to 6gb unofficially. snow leopard will address & use over 4gb of ram, well over.

  • Does my Macbook Pro need a RAM upgrade?

Hi. I own a Late 2011 MBP and its been acting a little slow lately. its not really slow, but the booting does take longer than before. and applications take a little more time to open for the first time than before. since i need to run quite a bit of heavy applications for my college use, i need to make sure it stands up for it.
i just need to know if its time for a RAM upgrade for my MBP? Will it really make a difference?
Also will it support an 8+8 GB RAM upgrade, or should i go for a 4+4 GB RAM upgrade instead?
is it possible if i can do it by myself? or will need to go to a store?
And just to confirm, I'm getting like a 5hr battery backup on this pc. is it normal or lesser than usual?
    Current Specs:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.4

Ram may not be the problem.  Look at this article for possible solutions:

    Not necessarily.

It will support both configurations.  How often do you exceed 4 GB of RAM usage.  Ram not used is RAM wasted.  16 GB might be necessary.  What are the most resource hungry applications that you use?
is it possible if i can do it by myself? or will need to go to a store?
User installation is easy.  No need for the store to do it.  Look in your users manual for instructions.
    Ciao.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram lagging in the simplest tasks

I received a brand new 13 inch macbook pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram (16 gb) about two weeks ago. I was expecting it to do tasks faster than its predecessors (the macbook pro which came directly before it, which my father owns, and the early 2009 which is now a family computer), but became dissapointed when it began crashing basically as soon as i started using final cut pro, and ever since it has been lagging everywhere else! I have check my activity monitor regulary due to this issue and have noticed "kernel_task" taking a large percentage of CPU (when im not using the computer all that much around 10%) and it uses 1.5gb of ram upwards constantly without fail! I am aware that this is the operating system so i dont really want to fiddle around with it but it does sound a little bit high to me. Originally it was slightly tougher work on final cut that would crash it, hence why i haven't seriously questioned it until now, but currently i cannot even move my curser around without getting the spinning beach ball of death! Please help me!

  • I have just upgraded my 2 apple computers to OX Lion and my macbook pro is having ip address issues. I have manually changed the ip address, renewed lease which works but everytime I switch on it does not connect to wi fi until I edit the ip address.

I recently upgraded to OX Lion and have an ipod, ipad, iphone and other apple mac computer on the network besides my macbook pro.
Since the upgrade I am having issues with my ip address. I have edited this number under renew lease, taken it to a manual edit and on any of these occassions found an address which allows the computer to go on wi fi.
However everytime I use my computer it starts off without wi fi and I have to manually go back to ip address and either adjust to manual or renew lease.
    Any ideas?

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t have Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.  https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

I am currently running OSX 10.6.8 on my MacBook Pro. Can I upgrade straight to Yosemite and if I can what issues will I face?

    1. It depends on what Mac model you have. If it's incapable of running Yosemite, installing an intermediate version won't help with that.
    2. You'll lose the ability to run PowerPC software, and some other programs may also be incompatible. If something goes wrong, you might lose data; back your computer up first. There aren't any issues specifically associated with skipping versions.

  • Macbook Pro 2014 (16gb ram) running very slow in excel.  Can anyone help?

My Macbook Pro 2014 is running extremely slow in Mac Excel 2011.  I just recently made the purchase (Last week) to upgrade from my Macbook Pro 2013.  The upgrade was for work as I handle large spreadsheets in my new role.  It would take some time to load before, and I was told it was because I only had 4GB of RAM.  Now, I have 16 GB of RAM and it runs slower than before.  Can anyone assist me with a solution?

  • I'm running 10.5.8 on my MacBook Pro. Can I upgrade to Mountain Lion.

I'm running 10.5.8 on my MacBook Pro. Can I upgrade to Mountain Lion. Thanks

The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Other countries...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
    Next...
    Upgrade to Mountain Lion
With Regard to ML...  Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
You should also consider more RAM... Get the Maximum you can for your Mac...
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM

  • HT4628 I did the security update on 4-2-13 and now my airport card will not turn on. OS 10.6.8 Intel imac 4,1 core duo. My macbook pro did not have this issue and wifi here is working on that. Is there a setting that was changed? Thank you!

Airport card will not turn on after security update yesterday. worked normally (for the download of the update) until then. Wifi here works fine with my Macbook Pro right now so the issue is with the card / computer / software not the provider. Did the update change something?
OS 10.6.8 imac core duo.  The indicator is on the tool bar but is empty.

My memory is 4gb for my macbook pro what is ram??

    RAM = Random Access Memory
the 4GB you quoted is your system memory, people say get as much as you can as it attributes to the performance of your system with major impact.
    other people disagree..

  • Help only have 14 gb left of 500 gb on MacBook Pro. Can I upgrade to 1Tb?

Help only have 14 gb left of 500 gb on MacBook Pro. Can I upgrade to 1Tb? (I purchased it August 2010) If not any suggestions to increase storage. Majority of my 500 gb is Desktop (assuming that is mainly snow leopard?) pictures and music. Don't really want to delete any of that.

    extremely easy, see ifixit.com  on a 10 scale its a 2
And mende is right, dont consider data archives of important info via wifi, and its slow.   That you "can" doesnt mean you "should"
#1  You can just CLONE the original internal drive, you dont have to "install" anything.
grab carbon copy cloner or superDuper CLONE app.
2 attach target clone drive via USB in an enclosure or HD dock. Firstly format the target (external new) HD or SSD in disk utility in “Mac OS extended journaled”
3 clone internal HD to target HD or SSD (external) [takes about 40 mins depending on size]
    4. Boot ONCE from external (go to sys. preference to boot from external) to TEST the new Clone
5 open bottom (see videos on ifixit or youtube on same) and remove old, install new.
(this video is for a 2012, look at this site for YOUR specific year / model)
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Replacing+MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+Hard+ Drive/10378/1
Done    (FIRST TIME after installing, boot will be SLOW,...normal and ignore that).
    Clone APPS
Superduper does not clone the recovery partition, but that is NOT necessary if you keep the original HD as a “backup clone”. Most don’t bother with the recovery partition in a clone, however that is your prerogative.
