MacBook Pro 5,1 RAM & Hard Disk Upgrade
Hi Guys
I have a MacBook Pro 15" with Core 2 Duo 2,53 GHz Cpu, 4Gb Ram, hard disk 320 Gb 7200rpm with Snow Leopard and I'd like to upgrade RAM and Hard Disk.
The model is MacBook Pro 5,1 and I have installed the latest firmware, so I have the EFI Boot Rom version = MBP51.007E.B06 (EFI 2.8) and the SMC version = 1.33f8 (SMC 1.2).
Can I install 8 Gb of Ram? If yes, I also need an advice for the brand and the model I can use without worry. What is the brand used by Apple?
The hard disk is become small and I need more space. What is the maximum capacity I can Install in my MacBook Pro and, again, which model and brand. Now I have the original Seagate model, I think I can use one model of the same brand. Is It true?

I'm seriuosly thinking to upgrade my hard disk with a Momentus XT 750 (ST750LX003), I've read a thread about it and I know is a different drive than the 500 gb version.
In the thread about the 500gb version of the Momentus XT (an infinite thread of 16 pages that I had the patience to read from the start to finish) users tell about incompatibility, noise and vibration problems.
Fixed I need a drive free of incompatibility issue, I know my hard disk is very silent and I like to work with a silent laptop.
Do you know if the recent Momentus XT 750 Gb is nearly silent like mine or, alternatively do you know a silent drive model with 750 Gb capacity and 7200 rpm (i know a 1 Tb 7200 rpm version doesn't exist).
P.S.: Like you, I like very much BMW!!!

I am unable to copy files from my macbook pro to my external hard disk. I tried to copy a movie 800mb in size to my EDD and it shows the loading box and it says zero kb loaded out of 800mb and sometimes it loads a a few kb of the file, then after a while it ejects my hard disk and gives a message saying you should have ejected it properly. and it sometimes gives this message
"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “....” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)".
This happens with a range of files if they are more than a few mb in size, so I am pretty sure its not the file problem. It also occurs sometimes when i try to copy from my EDD to my mac.
I have tried everything. I formatted my EDD to MS-DOS (FAT) format because i need to use it with mac and windows. I tried resetting The SMC and the PRAM and NVRAM. I tried verify and disk repair on disk utility. But the same thing happens over again and it is really frustrating. The problem doesnt happen with my PC.
My EDD is an Apollo 320GB hard drive from Imation.
Also are there any particular EDD brands that may not have this issue with MACs and can be used on mac and PC?

So this is follow up from my debarkle with the EDD. I found out my problem with copying files from Mac to EDD and vice versa was a result of a not so good EDD ( i had an apollo hard drive from imation) that was not very compatible with macs. So i did my research and found out that the best hard drives were Western Digital and Seagate. I bought the newest western digital EDD 1TB and formated it to FAT32 and guess what...no problems so far. The only problem is that FAT32 format doesn't copy files larger than about 4 gigs so i couldnt copy a movie from my brothers computer onto my EDD that was 1080p. You could probably resolve that by partitioning a small part of your hard drive in ExFAT? but yeah, hopefully that helped guys.

I had a problem with the hard disk on a 13" 2010 macbook pro. Replaced the hard disk with an Hitachi 1TB disk but when I tried to erase and format, it fails with input/output error and at other times saying unable to allocate memory. Any help much appreciated!
Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

Macbook Pro 15" Mid-2012 hard disk models?

i am interested in buying the 2012 Macbook Pro 15 inch model and plan to upgrade the 750GB 5400rpm hard disk to a 7200rpm.
Does anyone know what model is being used? Thankyou.I know. The WD Scorpio Black comes with a 3yrs warranty (provided you dont buy an OEM device). I understand that many people are actually better off buying the stock option and upgrading themselves. However, I buy Apple/Mac to avoid having to worry about the computer running, it just has to. So, if i can get the upgrade for only 50 Euros, for me this is the better choice. Thus, any defect will be Apple's problem during the lifetime of the Apple Care protection plan. (BTW: I have had bad experiences with Apple support declining to take a Mac Mini server crashing problem under investigation because of myself swapping the memory against Micron Mac-certified RAM and i'd rather avoid some support declining to repair the logic board because they say something went wrong whiie i swapped the hard disk... i am an engineer, but you just never know)

MacBook Pro 15" early 2008 Hard Drive Upgrade & More
I have a MacBook Pro early 2008 15" and would like to upgrade the hard drive to a 1TB but my local Mac Approved Tech Store is advising against it. They suggest 500GB. I have taken up photography and have large jpeg files to store. Also will this machine handle post processing of raw photos in PhotoShop and Lightroom? It only has 4MB of ram and USB2.0 for use with auxiliary hard drives + firewire. Who thought one new D7100 camera would cause so many issues. Thanks so much!
Concerning SSD I am just concerned about how many dollars I pump into a 6 year old box & then something big goes.
That is a very legitimate concern with an Early 2008 MBP. It and the Late 2007 models have the flaky Nvidea GeForce 8600M GT video chipset that is known to fail. The only fix is a new logic board and they can be is short supply; too many used/pulled boards have the same bad chipset. Apple had a program to fix this at no cost to you, but it expired in December 2012.
The failure is heat-related so, in the meantime, do everything possible to keep your MBP from overheating. No gaming, no "skins" on the case. Keep the MBP on a chill pad or at least add some spacers under it to get more air to the case bottom.
Don't run any anti-virus, cleaning or third-party backup software. Unfortunately, watching we videos will also run up the heat to level that could send the Nvidea hardware over the edge.
Avoid using it in clamshell more. And--here's where I failed and lost my Late 2007 MBP to the nVidea Curse--don't walk away during major OS updates. The computer can run hotter during the update process and that was enough to take mine to the recycle bin. -
Very recently my Macbook has been acting really slow. Normally whenever i play a game, it starts off slow then after i hear the fan spinning it begins to speed up. Its like a high-performance mode when the hard disk start running faster. However, my Mac's hard disks seem to be stuck in sleep because whenever i start a game, the fan doesn't spin fast and it acts like when i start my Mac or when i'm at critical battery and it shuts the hard disks off. I've never had this happen to me before and i can't play any games because its so slow. I have tried reseting the SMC and nothing happened. I unchecked "put hard disks to sleep when possible" in power saver options but it's still stuck in a power-saver mode. I really don't know what to do and i would appreciate some help as quickly as possible. Here are my specs:

After starting it and loading into a game i still had the same problem. Processor seems to be napping practically since i couldn't hear the fan spinning faster like it normally does and i was averaging about 15 fps to my normal 60 to 70-ish. Sorry if this is too much, i really don't know what is relative to the problem and what isn't. I hope this helps! if there is a program that takes console logs and filters them create clean logs let me know and i'll do it.
Oh and i'm also going to try verifying the disk on disk utility now. -
My MacBook Pro crashed two external hard disk !

Six months ago I bought my MacBook Pro, three weeks after one of my external hard drive crashed when it was plugged to my Macbook pro. I thought it was because of the age of my external hard drive (5years). I lost everything. I bought a new external hard drive, (Western Digital passport). Everything was OK until TODAY, I plugged it to save something and in 1second the hard drive has been removed/disconnect sudently with out reason. Then impossible to reconnect it, my MacBook pro doesn't detect the external drive. And like the first one, it makes a "clic clic" when It is plug, like something is broken inside.
I'm really sick of this and I don't understand what is going on !

Even if there are problems getting them to deliver where you live, you can get ideas of what works well with your system. -

You will excuse me by I'm not english...
I have a MBP, default but 7,200 HD optional. The Mac is ok but it has a problem: the hard disk sound like a fan with a "tic" sometime. If I put the fans@1,000 I not hear them, the only sound it's the HD (maybe...), if I push the part of the MBP over the HD the noise stop. In this part, under the HD, the black rubber pad (one of four...) isn't at level, don't touch the table ! So, I push over the HD, at dx of touchpad and the HD noise stops !
Anybody with this problem ?
ThnaksI solved the heat-issue in Windows Vist32 (tested and worked!)
This should also work in XP, XP64 and VISTA 64 although not tested.
Goto the Nvidia website and download the latest notebook drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_drivers.html).
Uninstall your old notebook drivers through device-manager and restart.
Now install the Nvidia notebook drivers you just downloaded and restart.
*NOW THE IMPORTANT PART!!!*
After numerous hours of testing i found out that installing new Nvdia display drivers overwrite some Nvidia chipset drivers. This causes your fans not spinning at all under heavy GPU load.
*THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE BECAUSE TEMPERATURES CAN EASILY PASS 100 degrees celsius.*
Now for the fix in four easy steps!
1. Under Windows insert your MacOS original install-disc (the one with the bootcamp drivers)
2. Choose to explore the Bootcamp folder.
3. Now open the drivers folder and browse to the Nvidia folder.
4. Now install the package called nvidiachipset. These come in all flavors (XP, XP64, VISTA, VISTA64) choose the correct version for your OS.
After installation a reboot is not even necessary. Start your favorite game and notice the extreme humming of your speeding fans! Should sound like music!

MacBook Pro + Time Capsule = Slow Hard Disk Access..
Hi,
I know it's an issue with my MBP as my imac is fine with my TC
Basically connections fail, are sometimes not possible and accessing D/L and Up/L files is so slow I can't even watch a movie from my TC..
It's only a problem with my MBP though, my other computer is fine..
I know I could do a re-install of OSX Lion but.. that's a major chore for me..
I have degraged my comp, used Onyx, I have no viruses and everything is fully updated..

Clean install is definitely required.. the very idea of upgrade installs have never worked properly AFAIK.. you can patch an OS not upgrade to a new one..

Every time I try to back up my Macbook Pro with an external hard drive using Time Machine, I receive the error of "the disk does not have enough space". I have a 500GB external hard drive and only 120GB Macbook. It worked fine before the latest Maverick's update. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My guess would be it has created an entirely new backup of your drive when you upgraded to Mavericks.

Is it possible to run two different versions of Apple operating system (for ex. 10.6.8 and 10.9) on a MacBook Pro, either on the same disk or from an external hard disk? If so, where would I find the details? (In order to be able to use the older applications no longer supported in 10.9)
If you want to add a second partition to the internal drive (in Disk Utility, select the drive, then open the partition tab and just click the + button), you should first be sure that you will have enough room to accommodate whatever the second volume will be. I am currently doing this for Snow and Mountain Lion.
To get to whatever volume is not the startup disk, restart and hold down option/alt at the chime, which will bring up a selection of the two volumes. Use the left or right arrow keys to select it and then hit enter/return. -
My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?
Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

0 B Page-outs1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
