Macbook Pro (8,2 - early 2011) freezes/beeps. Safe mode OK.

My MBP (running 10.6.8) just his 3 yrs this month (so of course just out of applecare) and a couple days ago the laptop froze while I was using it and would beep 3 times continually. I was able to do a hard reboot and get back to my desktop but after about a minute it would happen again. I don't get a kernel error and my screen doesn't change - it just freezes.
[Full Disclosure] Not sure if it's associated, but a few minutes prior to this first freeze, I had problems coming out of sleep mode - laptop wasn't waking up, was unresponsive to keyboard, had to hit power button a few times to wake it up. But it did eventually wake without a reboot
I have 2 4GB modules, and they are confirmed correct for my computer, from OWC; they been in there for 3 yrs with no problems.
I have done the following:
1. Ran detailed Apple Hardware Test via DVD - no problems found
2. Ran 2 other RAM tests - Rember and Memtest - no problem found
3. Ran Disk Utility on drive - no problems found
4. Reseated RAM modules  - still froze a minute after booting
5. Swapped RAM modules - still froze a minute after booting
6. Removed top module - seemed to work fine, used for 10-15 mins without problem
7. Removed bottom module, put top module in bottom slot - seemed to work fine, used 10-15 mins without problem
8. Tried each module separately in top slot - each time froze a minute after booting
At this point I figured the problem must be with top RAM slot and figured for now I could just run with RAM in bottom slot. Put one of the modules in the bottom, closed up laptop, booted up and it froze within 5 mins. At this point I had mixed up the modules so I dont remember which one I was currently working with. But based on my testing, the problem did not seem associated with the acutal modules.
I then just put both modules back in and did the following:
1. Reset PRAM - still froze
2. Reset SMC - still froze
3. Removed font cache and removed all startup items - still froze
4. Booted into safe mod  - NO PROBLEMS. Aside from what is automatically turned off in safe mode, everything worked fine and I worked with my laptop for a good while in safe mode without freezing.
So I'm not sure what to do next. I supposed I'll eventually need to make an appt at apple store but I'm thinking they'll want to replace the logic board which (1) may not be the solution  and/or (2) will be very expensive. The fact that it works in safe mode confuses me as it would seemingly point to a software issue - or is that not necessarily true? I haven't installed or changed any apps/extenstions/settings on my computer recently.
Hoping someone here can be my savior. Thanks!

I finally determine the problem to be google drive! Thank God I didn't spend money on repairs!
I realized I had never checked the crash log on my mac. I searched the web for the error code I received and found someone with a similar problem who said uninstalling google drive fixed the problem.
In safe mode (which always worked fine) I tried to connect google drive (it hadn't done it automatically because of safe mode) and immediately received the lock up and 3 beeps. this is not listed in the normal startup items so didn't even remember I had it running.
anway I managed to get it disconncted and deleted it and so far I have been fine!
Since then I have done some searches and found several threads with people have the same problem with the latest update to google drive!
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/drive/NVy9cxgkL_g
So hopefully someone else who has this problem sees this and doesn't spend hundreds of dollars replacing their ram, logic board etc.

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch Early 2011 vs MacBook Air 13-inch 2013

Hello. I currently own a MacBook Pro 15-inch, early 2011 model. It has 8 GB of RAM, a quad-core, 2.3 GHz i7 processor, hi-res, anti-glare display, an AMD 6750m and Intel HD 3000. I bought it off of an Apple product store on Ebay about 3 and a half months ago. It was 1,350$. It was in perfect condition when I bought it, and it still is. I'm really into producing music, and I use Reason 6.5. I also do some other small things on my laptop, like word-processing, web-browsing and I bring it to school everyday. I was wandering if I should sell this laptop on Ebay, and buy a brand-new Macbook Air, 13-inch, 2013 model. The laptop is a little thick and heavy, and its battery-life is nothing compared to the MacBook Air. I really value battery-life I would probably upgrade the RAM to 8 gigs, and maybe upgrade the processor to 1.7 GHz, maybe upgrade the SSD to 256, but I might not. I was wandering if this would be a good idea. How much would I be able to sell this laptop for on Ebay? Is the MacBook Air weaker or stronger than the laptop I am using now? Screen real estate is something that matters a lot when using a music program, which is why I initially went for this laptop. Now, since the MacBook Air is smaller, I know that it displays just as much as this laptop does, so I don't think that the screen size would be that big of a problem. I am thinking about saving up for a 27-inch iMac, which would then be my primary machine, but if I were able to buy one, it wouldn't be for awhile. Anyways, Thanks to anybody who can help me!

Is the MacBook Air weaker or stronger than the laptop I am using now
Its stronger in alloy form factor, slim design with only ONE moving part, no HD to crash from mechanical failure of impact etc.
Ive got an Imac and current Air, and owned several Air, the air is the hands down choice for myself and I wouldnt part with it for any amount of money.  Also own a couple macbook Pro, new and older one i rebuilt.
Here is an excellent video comparison between the 11” I5 vs. I7 2013 Macbook Air.

    Macbook Air:
Only one moving part, ultrafast boot time SSD, the full power of laptop with the weight of an Ipad (close).
Air is the only Mac that has Haswell, 802ac wifi, and incredible 12hr. batt life in 13" I5. HOWEVER NOW the new Pro have 802ac wifi
Recommend buying the Air with 8gig Ram.
Pack around a regular laptop around about 20 days, then an Air, .....after that the standard laptops stays at home.
Only one moving part, the fan. No moving HD heads to crash or moving platters.  Runs a LOT cooler than anything else out there (which = durability).  Heater is a killer on a scale of 10X over that of accidents.
Also the AIR has far fewer parts to fail inside than a standard laptop.  Really only a few replacement parts
The speakers on the Air, contrary to what most people would assume, are much louder than on the macbook Pro.
The Air in general is faster due to the SSD, also if you have a 802ac Router (i.e. Airport Extreme) then the Air over wifi is a LOT faster.
If youre going to be dragging a notebook around campus all the time, the Air makes things a lot more lovely.
The FINAL consideration of course is your application USE, and needs regarding same (see specs and video above)
The new Air, NOW with Mavericks is just 'king of the hill'. Nothing touches it

  • (MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011) Wi-Fi: No hardware installed...

The Wi-Fi hardware irregularly connects to the network. Once the WiFi is disconnected, it cannot be reconnected unless restart or shutdown. I restart or shutdown to "refresh" the scenario but the problem has grown more frequent. I can connect to the network through Ethernet and when Wi-Fi functions. I really need the Wi-Fi to function to make use of this computer  at home and at work. Aside from going to a Genius Bar, what else can be done to troubleshoot a rogue Wi-Fi hardware connection?
    Thanks!
    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    OSX 10.9.5

    Reset PRAM.
Reset SMC (but no visual indication of reset).
The Wi-Fi is able to turn on and off (improved).
A day goes by with good connection.
Wi-Fi is now disconnecting realiably within 60 min of restart, no ability to toggle on and off after disconnection.
Hardware remains displayed as installed (improved).
The problem is still present. Could this be a hardware issue? I do not have AppleCare and hope to resolve this independently from Apple. Anymore troubleshooting suggestions are much appreciated.
    Thank You!

  • Can I install one 8 GB ram in a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011).

Can I install one 8 GB ram in a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011).  The other slot is not working, I have only one slot that works. It is stated in this link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270#link1 , that the maximum memory is 8 GB where every slot slot has 4 Gb.  Is there any problem if i install only one 8 Gb ram in the working slot ?

You should be able to do that.
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Understand that there is no guarantee it will work, but based on the above it should work for you.

What cable should be used to connect a macbook pro, 13 inch, early 2011 model to an external projector so the project displays the image on the computer screen?

You will need a cable or adapter with a minidisplay connection for the MBP.  That will be inserted in the Thunderbolt port.  The other end is dependent upon the connections of the projector which you have not listed.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. Corsair RAM is compatible with your Mac and the Early 2011 MacBook Pro supports 16 GB of memory. Make sure you buy the correct memory for your MacBook Pro. See > http://www.corsair.com/us/memory-by-product-family/mac-memory-upgrades.html

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011) not staring up at all

    Hi Everyone,
I have MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011). Since couple of weeks my Mac suddenly shuts down, when I try to restart it again I am not getting any response, no fan voice, no screen start up, no lights nothing. I read couple of blogs and found that in such situations we should check the battery by pressing the side button however no light flashes there. Since two weeks I am observing that sometimes after 3-4 days when I try to switch on my mac it works perfectly fine and after using it for 1-2 days it again unexpectedly shuts down and if I try to switch on it just after this it is not responding at all. When it is dead and I connect charger to my mac I see only dim green light which is unusual. When it is working and I connect the charger I see the green light as it was before.
I had also given my mac to Authorized Service Center for repair, they have already reset SMC, PRAM, however my issue isn’t resolved. I told them that this is happening again and again, they are saying that we have checked everything and there are no hardware issues, probably we need to format the entire mac.
Looking at the problem I described, do you guys have any suggestion? Formatting my mac is the solution or there is a hardware issue?
    Please suggest.
    Thanks!

You can install OS X on a external drive, boot from it and test it and rule out the possibility of software being the cause.

  • Repeated crashes - MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011

Just this evening, my MacBook started crashing repeatedly. It has occurred 4 times in the last 4 hours.
The first time, I was watching a gif. My screen went completely black and did not come back (though the backlight was still on) and I restarted the computer manually.
The next time, I was watching a video. The screen turned black just as before and the audio stopped, but after a few seconds, white and red vertical stripes appeared over the entirety of the screen. I restarted the computer manually.
The third time, I was watching another video. The screen turned a lilac color with white vertical stripes. The audio was skipping. I restarted the computer manually.
The fourth time, I was just reading over a website when my computer went black and turned itself off.
    Any help?
    Here are some specs:
Type: MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011
Processor  2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

    Erik
You either need to put the photos in iTunes and share them or look at getting OS X 10.8 purchased from the app store then you can mirror your MBP as it is a mirror supporting model (early 2011 or newer for MBD and mid 2011 or newer for all other Macs.)
An app like airparrot could also help which has a free trial if you want a look.

It is a known issue in 2011-2013 MacBooks Pro. Today Apple has announced a free replacement program for those MacBooks Pro with defective GPUs (it looks like yours is one of them) which starts today in the United States and Canada, and in February 27th in the rest of the world. • Logic board for MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) has broken with no reason

I have MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011), i bought it 2 years ago, and few weeks ago suddenly my mac stop working, so i forced shut down. Then i started to use it again and my mac stop working again (it happende more than 3 times). So, i decided to bring it to the service center. After a week in the assistant diagnose my mac, they said my logic board has broken (failure), but when i asked what's the reason, they only say it had just broken and there's no reason behind that. The only way to fix it is only to replace my logic board with the new one.
Because my macbook doesn't registered in Apple Care protection, I need to pay around $1000 if i want to replace my logic board. It's really expensive and dissapointed with apple because the low quality for the macbook.
They said there's a lot of case like this with the mac book pro. I reaaaaaaaaaaaaally dissapointed . Is it really there's a lot of case like this?

Logic boards can and do fail, it does happen, just as in any other type of device, components break.
Where did you bring it to, a repair shop, or an AppleStore Genius Bar? Are you in the U.S.?
I recently had a LB replaced in the states at an Apple store 2010 15" MBP, I fortunately did have AppleCare so there was no charge. But the work order did have the price it would have cost had I not had AppleCare, it was
    Part Logic Board $487.50
    Labor $39.00
    Plus tax
No where near the $1,000.00 you were quoted, that's why I ask where you brought it to, as well as where you are located. If you are in the States, and it is not an Apple store and some repair shop, run away from them, they are trying to rob you. Try an Apple store if you are in the States, you may also ask about the flat rate repair policy. If you are located elsewhere then I can not speak for the repair price. (Though it does seem high)
