Macbook Pro 9,1 stuck after boot

There doesn't seem to be a tutorial on the wiki for Macbook Pro 9,1 specifically (it skips from 8,* to 9,2).  I've been following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBook
I already have an Ubuntu partition installed on this machine in addition to OSX.  I am using rEFInd as the boot loader.  I also got an EFI USB (I think) with Arch on it.
I created the "free space" partition.  When I booted with the USB, Arch showed up in the rEFInd menu and was able to boot from the USB.
Now the area where I'm stuck is at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBook#EFI_2.  I assume you're supposed to run `cgdisk` on *something*, but what?  The entire drive or the target partition?  I'm also not sure how to do the "delete the partition you just made" step (why, it's already free space?) and the +128M instruction is confusing.
Assuming that that all gets done, I find the https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Of … tall_Guide instructions very unclear.  There are no specific commands.  I guess you're supposed to do what you want to do, but I need more guidance than that.  For instance I have no idea what to do at the "Format Disks" step, and the "Create an UEFI System Partition in Linux" says to use GParted, but at this point I have no GUI for Arch since it's running off the USB.  The wiki also seems to say that an Internet connection is necessary to complete installation, but at the same time the connection does not work out of the box.  I can't install the wifi drivers since Arch is still running off the USB, but then apparently I can't install Arch on the machine without Internet.
I was also following the tutorial here: http://www.muktware.com/5451/how-install-arch-linux as it has clearer commands, but it seems to be outdated.  I'm wary of experimenting because I somehow corrupted my installation of Ubuntu and was no longer able to access it -- I had to reinstall it.
I also get the feeling that it would be much easier to install Arch from Ubuntu (which I have running), especially since this exists: https://github.com/brain0/genbootstrap -- but I'm even confused about that.  Specifically the instructions say "Create your partitions and mount them..."  Why would I need more than one partition?  I'm also not sure that this will play nice with the Macbook hardware/EFI/rEFInd.
Any advice?

You'll run cgdisk on the drive.  Those instructions are assuming you created a partition for arch with OS X's tool which was in the previous section - if it is just free space, you will not need to delete a partition, just create one.
The installation guide correctly redirects you to the beginners guide if you aren't experienced installing arch.  Follow that link.  You will skip the partitioning steps as you have just done that.  An internet connection is necessary ... so provide some information about the errors you are getting if you want help with that.
Don't follow guides on other websites.  If you opt to do so, no one here will be able to help when you have problems.

  • Macbook pro 5,1 freezing after boot

I installed arch on macbook pro 5,1 and it boots, but seems to freeze at waiting for udev uevents to be processed. I was able to get it to boot with acpi=off, but it acpi used to work in the past. Does anyone know how to get it working again, or should I just downgrade the kernel?

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I forgot to mention, I did test with the latest kernel (2.6.39). In fact, I have tested with several ways to install Arch, like net-install (which gives me the current kernel after installation) and even archboot 2011.05. None of them get me pass UDev uevents. I looked around on the internet and one old post report a successful install using the installing CD instead of netinstall. So I suspected it's the newer kernel giving us troubles on Mac After installing from CD (not netinstall) one boots into the system 2.6.33 but then ran into the same problem after pacman -Syu (which upgraded the kernel only to 2.6.34) but adding apci=off let the system boots again.
Unfortunately, I don't know even to carry the investigation further. But I think it's important for the community to look into this. Mac is a popular platform.
I will have this Mac (MacBook Pro 5.1) on my disposal for little while and be willing to do some more test on it. If anyone has suggestion, I'm more that willing to try.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 2013 stuck on boot every time after iPhone 5S is connected to it.

I have a MacBook Pro Retina 2013 and I've noticed that every single time I connect the iPhone 5S to it at the next boot the Mac hangs.
Booting in Safe Mode will eventually work (after about 20 minutes).
I can reproduce this every single time with this combination. Any advice?

You can try resetting the PRAM and SMC, but both of your devices are new. You can just make a Genius Bar appointment and let them figure it out.

  • MacBook Pro 15" not responding after boot-up?

My MacBook Pro 15” has an issue and won’t work! Yesterday I went to my MB to load it up for my daily commute into the city. As I was loading my bag I tried to disconnect my ext. backup drive that works via Time Machine.
When I left it the night before for its nightly back-up everything was five by five. However in the morning I couldn’t disconnect the device nor did my trackpad work (no mouse cursor). I was forced to perform a cold shut-down.
When I returned home last night I initiated a power up on my MacBook Pro. Everything booted up fine however I didn’t have control of the trackpad. My keyboard didn’t work either. I shut it down and repeated the process a few more times. Each time after the boot-up I had the same problem. I can see the mouse cursor, but have no control and the keyboard will not respond to any key being depressed.
Does anyone know what is wrong my MacBook Pro, beside user error or the “Nut behind the wheel?”
Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.
    Cheers~

Did you try booting up using the system disk? By rebooting into the system disc, will test whether the keyboard problem is localized to the installed version of OSX or a larger problem.
Here is a little follow up. I went home and tried the system disk. No luck, now I have a system disk in my machine that I cannot remove because the eject button doesn't work.
I took my MBP to the Genius Bar as scheduled. The “Genius” did the normal reboot and head scratch test. However when he plugged in an external mouse and keyboard, voila Bob’s your Uncle and it worked. Hi expert firm determination had concluded that the trackpad and keyboard were no functioning on my MBP…
The trackpad and keyboard are connected to the motherboard via a ribbon cable that had been fried at the connection. They will be keeping “left brain” for the next few days to RR the trackpad and keyboard.
The good news is that I have the service plan that will cover all expenses and parts. It was worth it to spend the few extra monies upfront, because I could only imagine what this would cost without it.
The other good news is that they will not send my MBP to the Tennessee repair depot, it will stay at the store to be worked on.

But now after installing Windows 7, many things in windows doesn't work (sound etc.). I made a clean installation because I needed to go from 32 bit to 64 bit.
Or should I just update bootcamp in Lion? (cause when I search for "boot camp" in Windows 7 there's no result)

You don't say which year you have, however...
...there are known problems with the mid-2010 models (see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) as well as early and late 15" 2011 models (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0).
Apple has taken ownership of the problems with the 2010 model but, unfortunately, the free logic board replacement for that model has probably long expired for you - three years after date of purchase.
One the 2011 models Apple has admitted no defect. You'll just have to skim the articles to get an overview of the problems that people are having (usually showing up as screen glitches at first and then going downhill from there).

my macbook pro just gets stuck at grey startup screen

    Reinstall OS X:
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
    OR:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) will only boot in safe mode.

I've been unable to boot my MacBook Pro normally. It will boot in safe mode, and, until today, I was able to get a normal startup after resetting both PRAM and SMC. Running "Repair Disk" on the startup disk did not reveal any problems. I have also done a recovery boot to reinstall OS (10.9.1), which did not help either, though I did not wipe the hard disc first (I did back it up).
Had to take it to Apple back in January when the screen started acting funny, i.e. getting static-y and going blank for seconds at a time but then coming back. Their tests showed that there were no hardware problems, and the screen issue was eventually resolved by doing a PRAM reset. About 14 months ago, I had the logic board replaced.
Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but when I have been able to boot normally, if I quit Google Chrome, the machine will freeze completely.

First try doing a Software Update.
Then restart and see if that works.
If not then I would update Java.
Restart and see if that works.
If not then delete the following plist items.
    [invalid] com.oracle.java.Helper-Tool.plist
    [invalid] com.oracle.java.Java-Updater.plist
    Should find these in:
    /Macintosh HD/Library/LaunchAgents
    /Macintosh HD/Library/LaunchDaemons
Now restart & see if that works.
If that doesn't work try deleting everything in:
    /Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems
    Hope this helps.

  • 2007 macbook pro keeps restarting won't boot up

    Hello,
I have a fairly old MAcbook Pro (2007). Recently, after rrsinsatlling and erasing the hard drive, my MBP will not Boot up. Ive tried Resetting PRAM, SMC, etc. The symptoms are as follows.
the chime then apple logo---then it RESTARTS. I can't open in safe, or verbose, or run Apple hardware test. since it just restarts. I can't boot from DVD or External Flash drive because it just restarts after selecting the alternate startups. I also can not boot from the recovery HD because it just restarts. the only thing that delays the restart is if I don't select a startup disk after holding the option button. or if i hold the N key...at which point after about a minute or so of searching for a network disk it restarts. when i hold down the V i would see a few lines of code and it then restarts. It will continue to restart for hours until I disconnect the power adapter. (finally there is no battery in the device and hasn't had once for over 3 years when it exploded. Please help
    Thank you.

I also have a Late 2007 MBP 15" that, after 5.5 years, finally succumbed to the Nvidea curse. Nvidea sold Apple a lot of video chipsets (yes, if you have a 2007 MBP, you could have the Nvidea curse) that were faulty and would fail with heat. Mine failed during a software update too.
Aple had a repair extension program for this but it expired in December 2012.
I called around a lot, finally calling Cupertino to be told the 2007 MBP not longer qualifes for a flat-rate repair due to a lack of parts.
My point is you may not be able to get the flat-rate repair. I replaced mine with a refurb entry-level 13-inch MBP that nearly twice as fast, has over 4X the hard drive space, and cost half of what the old MBP did. That was after getting several estimates for a new logic board from third-party service centers that where in the US$500-900 range. I paid US$1020 for the refurb 13-incher.

If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My macbook pro is very slow after installing mountain lion

my macbook pro is very slow after installing mountain lion?  Is anyone else having this issue?

If you don't use an SSD and bump your RAM up to 8 Gb's you may experience slow speeds, but I noticed slow speeds with your general configuration in SL.
one thing you should consider right now is, Spotlight is Reindexing your hard drive, that takes time and resources, (resources which you don't necessarily have to spare).
If you continue feeling like your performance is slow, you have a few options with this computer (I have the same one).
the express card slot can house a wintec SSD drive. That little door on the side of your machine is pure gold for a really quick solution for speeding up your machine. I have one in mine right now i'm using as a scratch disk for CS6 but I used to boot from it, and the speed boost was out of this world.
You could take out the internal HDD and put in a new SSD (I have a Vertex 4 from OCZ) it is completely over kill but my experience is pretty fast and I keep up with the later MBP models colleagues have.
There are some other options for you like taking out the optical drive (however I don't know if I'm supposed to talk about that here). Google Data Doubler.
You need to also set it to always use the 9600 chipset, this will increase performance a lot too. to do this go to system preferences>energy saver>Better Performance. This switches the video card to the better one and makes a world of difference.
Lastly, your RAM. after an EFI Firmware update, our computer support up to 8GBs of RAM. Do it!

  • Why is my Macbook Pro slow to wake after sleep?

Why is my Macbook Pro slow to wake after sleep?

I am having the same issue. I hook it up to the charger in the evening and close the lid. When I go to use it the next time it takes a good 30 seconds or so to wake up. The screen shows the log in screen but typing doesn't work and the cursor is frozen. Sometimes it will even give the rainbow wheel for the cursor, so it seem like it is processing whatever to get going. I also notice that my battery won't be fully charged at anywhere from 95%-99% after being charged a full evening. What can I do to change whatever is happening because it is pretty crappy to charge it all night expecting to have a full battery for the next use, plus the issue of having to sit there waiting for it to boot every time.

  • Macbook pro runs really slow after sleep mode

My MBP ( MacBook Pro (13-inch, medio 2012), 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB), runs very slow after sleep mode. I notice that when I wake it up, my memory usage is nearly 8 GB. After a restart it is back no a normal level, between 2 and 5 GB depending on how many programs I am running. Any ideas what causes this? My IOS is Yosemite 10.10.2
    Kind regards

    Hi Japib

  • Macbook Pro cannot start properly after Yosemite v10.10.3 update

    Hello,
I have a serious concern with my MacBook pro 13Inch Retina. After the recent update to Yosemite v10.10.3 on 18 April, whenever I start my Mac book, the Apple icon will not show up immediately as usual just black page. It only appear after I press the power bottom again( or sometimes by luck a 5 mins wait) then the icon will appear and system turns into login page.  This is not normal!
Anyone please help! I am not sure if I were the only one experiencing this or this is a bug come with the recent update.
    Thanks!

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Now, download and install the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after upgrade to Mavericks

    Hello,
After the upgrade to Mavericks my MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after a couple of minutes of usage - after successful install and the use of some apps. Not bad enough the system is now always crashing if I try to boot. PM reset didn't help. Booting from the restore partition was possible, but I decided to go back to a working backup of 10.8.4 made a minute before I tried to upgrade. Why 10.8.4? Because 10.8.5 causes the strange problem that the Mac freezes after wake up from sleep.
    Any suggestions?
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Kind regards

I did a clean install of mavericks on my MBP (mid 2007) and still it freezes at arbitary points. The very first time when it booted up it worked for longer and when I started to apply updates from app store, it froze. Successive boots froze much early, like within few seconds of booting.
I am going to check this by booting in safe mode.  I am losing hope with mavericks on my MBP (mid 2007) and will switch back to snow leopard (10.6.8) which was working seemless.
I checked so many things, based on other posts to make sure if my MBP is really Mid 2007. IT IS.
    Rgds,
    Raj.
