Macbook Pro after attempt to update to Mavericks will not start-up - it will not go into recovery - reset SMC - reset NVRAM, still grey screen, logo and spinny thing

Updated my Macbook Pro with Snow leopard, then updated that to 10.6.8, then downloaded and began installing mavericks.
Mavericks apparently installed? I looked away and when I looked back my computer was off!  It has not worked since.
I tried safe mode - where you could see progress and a repatitive error message scrolled (very fast) firever down the screen.  Nothing seemed to be futher going to happen so I turned it off again.  All other discussion forums I have followed say try time-machine back-up (I do not have it).
Really, I am wondering, what an earth is going on?

If there's any way to read that screen message it probably explains the problem.
You might try to boot into "verbose mode" to see if that makes it any easier to see the message.

  • My Apple TV is not mirroring my Macbook Pro after I installed OS X Mavericks

My Apple TV is not mirroring my Macbook Pro after I installed OX X Mavericks?

Installing Maverick does not change the hardware requirements.
Did it work prior to installing Maverick?
Does the device meet the hardware requirements?
    Supported Macs
AirPlay Mirroring in OS X takes advantage of the hardware video encoding capabilities of 2nd and 3rd Generation Intel Core processors. Hardware video encoding allows AirPlay Mirroring to efficiently deliver high frame rates while maintaining optimal system performance. The following Mac models have processors that support AirPlay Mirroring:
    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you keep your data backed up?
If not, you should always do so*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
You never know when a hard drive or a directory might go bad.  Having a bootable clone is a must.
That link also shows you some tools you can use to recover data.
If you aren't backed up, try buying those tools first, before attempting to repair the directory.
Directory issues can be fixed with these tools*:

  • Plugging official DVI to Video adaptor to Macbook Pro 3,1 recently updated to Mavericks killed my Macbook's SMC

So it happens that since Lion and now, of course, Mavericks, the DVI to Video/S-Video support is not only unsupported, but crashes your 2008 Macbook Pro (MacbookPro3,1, 15 inch) if you plug the official adaptor in. The screen went with artifacts and the computer needed a hard reset.
What happened after that is that the computer wouldn't start. Of course I immediately did SMC and PRAM resets without results. No leds, no start chime, nothing. Only method found was to bypass the SMC (which is done via holding de power button with battery/power cord unplugged, then plugging power cord still holding it, releasing, and pressing it again). Everything is then ok except, of course, everything controlled by the SMC (no battery, leds, fans at full speed). Did Apple's Hardware Check, full test, no errors found. Reflashed manually the SMC via an EFI Shell, as found on the internet: the SMC is in "U" mode and can't be correctly reflashed. After that, I unmounted the logic board looking for any kind of corruption; found nothing.
In resume, did everything I could for a week. The last thing I found out is that plugging the adaptor itself, without connecting to any external device (no TV), still crashes the screen with artifacts. I beleive this has to do with the adaptor having inside some chips, since it's function is not to rewire cables, but to convert one signal to another. What happens after that and a hard-reset again, and after that hard reset the now installed rEFIt screen doesn't appear, so I believe that, effectively, connecting the adaptor affects your computer's boot system somehow.
I know Apple doesn't support computers old as these anymore, and I don't even care they quit the Video-out support with their new free OS, but if by doing that you enable your own official 20-30€ adaptor to kill an otherwise fully functional Macbook, that's foul play.
Any advice will be greatly received. Thanks for reading.

Forgot to mention that the DVI adaptor works ok if plugged to a DVI monitor, so it's not a physical problem from the DVI output plug.

  • Constant Kernal Panic on Macbook Pro after 10.8 update.

Ever since I updated my MacBook Pro to 10.8 the computer has been crashing almost every hour. It is rediculus. Each time it crashes the BSD process name changes. I have tried multiple methods to remove programs such as littlesnitch which I had heard was a problem, but this did not work. The computer had not had a problem for 3 years until I updated it to 10.8. Is the new operating system broken this badly? Can someone please help me.

  • Messages on MacBook Pro after iOS 8 update on iPhone not working

So, all my Apple products and services have been working smoothly until I updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 8. Oddly enough, after that my Messages app on my mac stopped working. I logged out, and TRIED to log back in, but it says "Your Apple ID can't be used to set up iMessage at this time." and then it gives me a customer code. I rely heavily on this feature, and would love to use this feature when I finally get my hands on a 6, BUT how do I fix this?
    Any solutions?

    Hi,
    If it looks like this:-
The only "Fix" is to call Apple Support.
You have to be clear is is an Account issue with logging into the iMessages account from the Mac.
Sometimes you have to ask to speak to the Level 2 person as the front line people are working to a Script and will  tell you your Warranty has run out and you need to pay.
It is NOT and Hardware problem.
It is NOT a Software issue.
The Messages App just happens to be the one reporting it.
