MacBook Pro and Final Cut Express

Hi,
I want to know if Final Cut Express 4 runs smoothly on a MacBook Pro 15" 2.2 GHz with 60 GB hard drive. (If additional space is needed I’d use Verbatim SmartDisk 250GB FireWire/USB Portable Hard Drive)
I know I meet the minimum requirements to use FCE, but I need to know if I can make edits decently or well enough.
If not, what can I do to improve its usage?
Thank you!!!

MBP is fantastic for FCE/FCP/FCS.
I suggest 2 GB RAM at LEAST. I got 3 GB but mine is an older model; the new ones go up to 4 GB I believe.
Get the super fastest internal HD you can get. And then a FW 800 external (large as you can get).
I am saving up for a super large external screen; got a lousy analog 1024 x 768 right now but it works well for my FCE browser window and also sometimes for Canvas Preview.

OK all, I'm a Mac novice here. Just bought my first Mac last month and added Final Cut Express to it in order to have some nice advanced features when it comes time to edit all kinds of home video shot on the Sony DCR-TRV140 Digital8 Handycam...
But I'm having trouble figuring out how to get my MacBook Pro to recognize the camcorder.
I have a 4-pin firewire connector on the camcorder, and a 9 pin firewire connector on the Mac. Is it as easy as buying a 4/9 pin cable?
I thought about trying to hook it up through the USB cable... but haven't had any luck there either.
As you can tell, I'm quite new to this, so please be nice. Ha!
If I can provide any further information, please let me know.
Specifications for the Sony camcorder can be found here:

    Pretty much.
Hello and welcome to the forum.
Here's one source of such a cable:

I'm not sure what Easy Setup you'll need to use in FCE, but, if you're in the USA, I think it will be DV-NTSC DV Converter or maybe DV-NTSC Firewire Basic.

  • Standard MacBook Pro and Final Cut Express and other great Pro Apps

Hey Guys - tell me if this configuration of a MacBook Pro would be ok and work great for Final Cut Expess, Aperture, Creative Suite, and other Apps without slowness and other problems
    2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    Superdrive 8x
    2GB 667Mhz DDR2 SDRAM - 2 x 1GB
    Thanks in advance.

Yes. However, if you want to run +more than one+ of those listed apps simultaneously, the best thing you can do is add more RAM. Go to the max - 4 GB (2 x 2 GB). Note that Apple overcharges for RAM (and they don't make RAM, they just buy it from Samsung, Micron, and others, mark it way way up, and resell it). So, buy Crucial (the consumer division of Micron, in fact) or Kingston RAM. 2 x 2 GB sticks can be purchased for a little over $100 (compared to Apple's $200).
    Hope this helps...

    Hi,

Short Answer: Yes, it'll run just fine.
Long Answer: Yes and no. It depends. For the normal stuff to some more process-intensive stuff you'll likely be perfectly fine. The only hang-up could be the fact that your internal drive is so small. Yes, you have the external 250 which is nice but your computer by default uses the extra space on your internal hard drive for data-swapping. Dropping below 10-15GB you'll notice a substantial decrease in speed, especially when you work with large files such as those involved in video post-production.
Internal drives are dirt cheap these days. Seagate makes some very high performance laptop drives that will work great in your Mac. Likewise out of all the drive manufacturers I know Seagate's have the best reputation for internal use. LaCie's may be best external manufacturer, but last I checked they didn't make their own drives.

  • MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio 2

Hello, all. I currently have Final Cut Studio 1 (with Final Cut Pro 5, DVD Studio Pro 4, Motion 2, LiveType 2, Soundtrack Pro, and Compressor 2). I have an old PowerMac G4 from 2003, which Motion doesn't work on (and DVD Studio Pro doesn't run so great on, either - I haven't worked with Soundtrack Pro, LiveType, or Compressor too much). I'm thinking about buying a new MacBook Pro, and I'm wondering if all of FCS 1 (and especially Motion) would work on either the 13" or 15" models.
If I got a 13", here would be the specs:
    2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
If I got a 15", here would be the specs:
    3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 512MB
Anyone have any experience with running an older version of FCS - or even FCS 1 - on a setup like the ones I described above?
    Thanks, everyone,
    Kevin

Short answer: 13", no, 15", yes

  • New Mac Pro and Final Cut Express HD

Ive just taken delivery of a new Mac Pro 2.8ghz quad core with ATI Radeon HD 2600. I've tried to open Final Cut Express HD and am getting an error message
' This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing -
    AGP graphics card"
I've tried re-installing but no luck, any ideas ?
    Thanks

    Hi(Bonjour)!
You can use keyframe on filters from version 3.5 and later. And the new FCE HD 4.0 (who doesn't includes soundtrack nor the complete content of livetype library) includes newer filters and supports AVCHD.

  • 13 " Macbook Pro and Final Cut Pro X

    Hi there,
I have a 13 " macbook pro 7,1. I meet all the requirements for the Final Cut Pro X editing software. My questions are:
    1. Will it work fine although I have only barely met the requirements (will it be too slow or worth running on the computer?)
    2. Looking on my graphics information my computer says its "pixel depth" is 32-bit. In the advertisement on the software it mentions something about 64-bit
    Any help would be appreciated.

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro and the Final Cut Pro X forums. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • MacBook/Macbook Pro and Final Cut Studio

I am about to buy a Mac, but im not sure if I should get the MacBook or MacBook Pro? Which is better suited for Final Cut Studio? Is there a specific version of the MacBook/MacBook Pro that would be best? Thanks so much!

Exactly. It will install, but if you have any problems and you need to call Apple, they won't give you any support. If you're going to spend $1,200 on some software, you should pay for a computer that supports the minimum requirements.

  • Macbook pro and final cut 5

I have a macbook pro 2.2 ghz with a stock 120 gig 5400 rpm Hd with 2 gigs of memory. On a relative smal final cut pro file with a few layers I am getting dropped frames resulting in very slow play back and stops any help?????? Should I get a faster HD @ 7200 rpm or increase the gigs or is there something in final cut I should turn on or off. Other than this everything else has been running extremely smooth on my macbook pro

Ok stupid question the transfer rate of the 800 is better than the 400 correct? So would you recommend going with http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MS8U7100GB16/ or
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MS4U7100GB16/
I was thinking of going with the 7200 rpm instead of 5400 rpm would that make that much of a difference?

  • MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio

I'm trying to put together a mobile editing system. From what I've researched regarding the type of camera I'll be using, a MBP and FCS seems to be my best bet. I've primarily been a PC guy. However, I'm let down by the additional peripherals and high cost of editing programs on the PC, so I thought I'd dabble in Macs for a bit.
I've had a chance to work with FCP before, but I'm worried about picking up a MBP that is too slow. Also, Color's requirements include a 17" monitor. However, I'd probably already be so far into post-production by that point that I'd use the MBP with a larger Mac monitor instead.
Am I on the right track here? I'd love to hear some input and experiences!
    Thanks in advance!

Well, there's no such thing as 1050p60. You need to simply use the easy setup that matches the format of the material on the tape. It's most likely 1080i60. If shot in the US... if not post back.
The Easy Setups are found in the Final Cut Pro Menu... Just select the format of the tape (it will show on the on screen on the camera's LCD during playback. You may have to turn this feature on on the camera/deck if it's not already displaying the playback format.
The easy setups will also set your sequence settings correctly... If you have to render a clip when you just put it in a sequence, it's because your sequence settings don't match the format of the video being placed in it. The Easy setup for HDV 1080i60 will make things great as long as that is the format of the source material. Which I'll bet that's what it is. (it's the most common of the formats).
Why do you have to capture the audio separately? Was it recorded on an audio tape or something? If so you'll have to sync it in a sequence like it was an audio ciip... then if you want it to be the same as an audio/video clip, you need to use the "merge clip" command, after you've established the sync for each clip. A pretty tedious process I'm afraid. Read about "merged clips" in the online manual.
    Jerry
P.S. It's pretty bad form to "threadjack"... don't do it next time. Start your own thread...

  • Recommendations? Macbook Pro and Final Cut Pro

Trying to decide what system I want to buy to use Final Cut Pro on. I'm looking at the 15" model, so my question really is what upgrades would run Final Cut Pro 5, or 7 the best.
I own a copy of 5. I am deciding on if I should buy 7..

The things that will make the most difference are:
    1. RAM - max this out or put in as much as you can afford
    2. Hard drive - get the largest capacity 7200rpm drive possible

  • Macbook pro and final cut pro 5.0.4

Am looking to get a macbook pro for occasional editing on the move.
Currently running 5.0.4 quite happily on my main edit suite.
Should there be any problems with running 5.0.4 on the macbook pro.
I know there are things in 6.x that are good but everything is fine as it is.
    Pete Snowdon

Again, 5.0.4 is not compatible with Intel Macs, so performance and compatibility are real issues.
5.1.x was the first to this, but isn't available any longer.
Upgrades from qualifying products range from $499.00 to $699.00
