Macbook Pro and/or Imac

Hi folks, I have a few questions regarding Final Cut Pro
I'm a professional musician who requires the use of Final Cut Pro for video lessons; i'm not a professional video editor, but I know my way around for what I need to do. I share my recording studio with two other folks and don't always have access to my studio where Final Cut Pro is installed on my decked out Mac Pro
I m considering purchasing an Imac for home editing and a macbook pro for when i travel (as I travel frequently for my job).
I will only be using the Imac and Macbook pro strictly for basic editing. In other words, I won't be using any fancy effects; there will be text, imported images, transitions, and the video files ; that's  pretty much it
I was wondering what the minimum specs of each computer should be. Would the most powerful current imacs and macbook pros be overkill for my purposes?
I find that even on my decked out 8 core mac pro , certain things are a bit slow (ie exporting 5 minute videos using quicktime conversion (HD video) , can take up to 30-40 minutes!). So I wouldn't want exports to last 10 days on an imac... ( i would probably just use the laptop for editing, and transfer the projects to the imac or mac pro for exporting)
Is there anyone else out there who works in a similar way? Bring their work home, and transfer projects between computers?
While we're at it, for anyone who's doing the same thing as me, are you able to install your single user license of FCP on multiple computers (using it on one computer at a time, of course)?
"2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time."
From what I understand, it means I can install it on as many computers as I want, as long as it's being used one computer at a time (ie my scenario).
I just don't want to get into a situation where I buy the new computers, and I am unable to install FCP on em...
thanks so much!!

You have not included any information about what format you shoot and what format you output. Rendering and exporting/converting can be insanely processor intensive but you might be better served by getting a cmaera that shoots a format that does not require processing.
If you're just doing simple work, get iMovie or maybe explore FCPX.

    Maverick and Your System message
I've updated my Macbook Pro and my iMac with Maverick, updating the various apps (Pages, Aperture, iPhoto, Numbers & iMovie, too) in the process.
On my Macbook, everything functions perfectly. On my iMac, I get the Your System has Run out of Application Memory message. But it's not Calendar, it's Mail that not only won't open, but when it does now, it takes the entire system out with it.
I open Safari, and it works. I open Firefox, and it works and Safari still works. I open Calendar and it works, Safari and Firefox continue to work. I open Reminders, and everything still works.
I open Aperture, and it opens Finder instead, showing the 3.5 update that was installed two days ago (and Aperture has functioned), but doesn't seem to update the app; after about 20 seconds the update disappears and I can now open Aperture and it shows I'm now opening the updated Aperture, which it didn't show before.
I click on Mail, and the cursor spins for ten minutes. The mail window finally opens, but the cursor spins and does not connect to upload new mail, and I finally Force Quit Mail. Since the Maverick update, even though Mail was not updated (and maybe because Mail was not updated), I have been able to receive emails twice, and then the program crashed.
Besides the Aperture app, Pages didn't fully update on the iMac, and I had to remove the old Pages icon from the dock after the new program loaded up from Applications.
    Any ideas?

  • If I own a Macbook pro and an iMac can I have final cut pro downloaded to both with one purchase?

If I own a Macbook pro and an iMac can I have final cut pro downloaded to both with one purchase?

If you purchase Final Cut Pro X at the Mac App Store, you can install it in all your Macs free of charge as many times as you want. The same applies for all the applications you purchase at the Mac App Store

  • I upgraded a MacBook Pro and a iMac to 10.8.3

I upgraded a MacBook Pro and a iMac to 10.8.3.
Formerly the MB Pro was on 10.8.2 and working like a charm. (Lion, not Mt. Lion.)
Now both machines are working ok, just really slow. It takes almost a minute to open mac applications, like mail and Safari. I feel like they are both running like my old dial-up internet connection years ago.
I am so distressed, because it looks like it will be a huge deal to downgrade to earlier version.
I have not tried the combo update since I was so disgusted by all the time I had wasted. Do you think it is still worth a try?
    Thanks!

Try starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
    Does this make a difference?

  • I own a MacBook Pro and an iMac. How can I copy my iPhoto library from my MacBook to the iMac?

I own a 13" MacBook Pro and a 27" iMac and I have different iPhoto libraries for each one of them.
How can I copy the iPhoto library from the MacBook to the iMac without losing the pictures I have on the iMac library?
Is it possible to merge the libraries?
Can I do this without using an external HDD? (e.g. connecting them through an ethernet cable?)
    Thanks for your help!

    1. By eirher a: renaming one of the Libraries or b: copying them to another folder
    2. If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
    3. Yes.

  • I own and work on two Mac computers.. a MacBook Pro and an iMac. Am I required to "purchase" the one-time in-App purchase of $4.99 TWICE, one for each computer..??

I own and work on two Mac computers.. a MacBook Pro (dual core, 3.06GHz, 8 GBs RAM) and an iMac ((dual core, 3.06GHz, 4 GBs RAM). Am I required to "purchase" the Garageband one-time in-App purchase of $4.99 TWICE, one for each computer..??

The answer to your question is not about the GarageBand content but the concept of downloading any apps (or in-apps purchases) from the app store. The Key is your Apple ID.
Whenever you download an app (it doesn't matter if you pay for the app or if it is free) you have to to be logged in to the App Store with a valid Apple ID. That becomes your "Online License". Whenever you are logged in to the App Store with that Apple ID you will see your Purchase History, what apps you downloaded and also what apps have updates available. As you see, this procedure is independent from your actual computer. The App Store is only interested in your Apple ID for verification.
To download an app or content on a different computer, just make sure you are logged in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you did for the initial purchase.
The button will now display (instead of Free or the price tag) "Install" because the App Store knows that you purchased the item before (with that Apple ID) and that you computer you are on at the moment oesn't have th app installed. Just click the "Install" button to download the app.
Here is how the Button looks like depending on the condition.
The same principle applies to in-app purchases. With GarageBand, when you try to restore Purchases, make sure you are logged in in the Apple Store with the Apple ID you made the original purchase.
One more thing: You don't need to be logged in to actually run an app, only for online activities (downloads, updates)
    Hope that helps

  • Transferring data between existing MacBook Pro and new imac

    Hi,
I have just purchased a new imac and I'm wondering the best way to transfer data from my laptop to the new mac. My Macbook Pro was running quite slow and was a bit tedious, so I'm concerned that if I use my current time machine backup to launch the imac, then some of these issues might affect the new computer. To be honest, I'm not even sure if you can do that....
I was also wondering if anyone is aware of a method which I could use to keep both computers synced, but still maintain control over what info is actually synced (the hard disk on the imac is way beyond what's available on my laptop).
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

It would be a mistake to replace a new fully functioning system on your iMac with a potentially dysfunctional one on your MBP. If you need to transfer personal data then you can connect the two via FireWire cable and use Target Disk Mode to transfer your data manually. If you have a MobileMe account, then you can sync your Mail accounts, iCal calendars, Address Book entries, and Safari bookmarks that way.
You can use ordinary backup software to sync two computers connected by FireWire and using Target Disk Mode. You can use a USB flash drive depending upon the amount of data you need to move between the two computers. You can use an external hard drive as intermediary. However, Time Machine is not a utility intended to keep two computers synced.
You should give thought to what you need synched, as your question seems to imply you think that means everything, but I doubt that's what you had in mind.

  • Should I use a macbook pro as my laptop and desktop, or have a macbook pro and an iMac?

i was wondering if i should use my macbook pro as a laptop and desktop, or if i should go ahead and buy a mac desktop too?

Just look at how many posts are on this forum, let alone the Boot Camp forum, about Windows on a Mac.
Got to any of the virtual machine software forums and take a look. Why do you thing there are 3 different virtual machine program available for the Mac to run Windows, let alone Apple's own Boot Camp system.
If it wasn't needed do you think Apple would have there own system for installing and running Windows on all Mac computers.
I personally don't know of any Mac users, and I know quit a few, that do not have a version of Windows installed on there Mac computers. Either in a boot camp partition or in one of the virtual machine programs.
There is some software that has just Windows versions. If you need that software and you own a Mac you need Windows to run it.

  • Can Time Capsule be the wireless router for my MacBook Pro and my iMac G5?

My MacBook Pro was simple to hook up to Time Capsule, but now my iMac G5 will not connect to the internet. Any ideas?

Hello bluefeather. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
How do you have the iMac G5 connected to the Time Capsule (TC) ... by Ethernet or wirelessly? If wirelessly, try connecting via Ethernet ... can it access the Internet now? What version of OS X are you running on the iMac?

  • Interactive portions of web sites are not working. I click on the interactive buttons and nothing happens. All these sites work normally on Safari. I am using a MacBook Pro and an IMac.

Examples are click to purchase or click to download PDF files. This is happening on most if not all websites.

Well that's nice and all, but why not just spend the 50 bucks on a router? Also, why do you need a crossover cable? Modern operating systems do not require crossovers anymore.

  • Does anyone know how to sync the pictures folder between a MacBook Pro and an iMac?

I want to be able to load my pictures onto one computer and have the other one(s) sync with that computer so my pictures are all there on both computers.

  • I have a Macbook pro and a iMac and I can't seem to connect to the wireless internet at the same time. Please help.

Invariable on eof them will connect and the other one doesn;t. I have to constantly disconnect eth router and re-connect it for the computers to pick it up. I also sometimes get an error message that I am sharing the same IP address and i don't know how to change it. Please help!

Open the Network preference pane in System Preferences on each Mac. If necessary, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the preference pane. Select the wireless connection from the list on the left. Click the "Advanced" button, and in the sheet that opens, select the "TCP/IP" tab. From the popup menu labeled "Configure IPv4," select "Using DHCP." Click OK to close the sheet, then click "Apply." Try again.
