MacBook Pro and PC Gaming?
i just bought a 13" macbook pro with retina and am dying to finally start PC gaming. Specifically Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. Will this run well on my new Macbook?
Only you can be the judge of that... MacBook Pro's, and the 13" model in particular, aren't really good gaming machines. The 13" (and some 15" models) lack a discrete GPU that can help out with FPS, etc. You can always install Windows via Boot Camp and try - but don't keep your expectations too high.

I have seached through a bunch of the threads here, but still can't find solid information about gaming with a MBP.
I the last gen 1.5 G4 Macbook that I travel with, but lately Ihave been really upset with the performace I get when playing games (specifically WoW). I have been thinking about getting a new computer solely for gaming while I'm on the road. Choices are Dell XPS, Alienware m9700 w/ SLI or a MBP with the 256 VRam. I really love the apple products, and I will still keep my apples at home, but can the X1600 in the MBP compete with the others?
I primarily play WoW, but I don't want to limit myself to that (I will be weining myself from the game shortly). With Bootcamp, seems like almost any game is fair play now?
Anyway, please gamers give me your opinions on the X1600...games, frame rates, settings, OSX or windows as much detail as you can would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advanceI just quick-tested Oblivion on my MBP (256MB VR).
On medium settings it looked quite well. With fluid gameplay.
On my slightly older PC (Nvidia 6600GT), I have to put a lot of effort into tweaking just to get the same results as the MBP.
In my opinion, a MBP is good enough to play any recent game at least with medium settings. I don't think it is that much of 'future ready', so games comming out this or next year will probably be to much in terms of graphics.
It also gets very (VERY) loud and hot while gaming. (I have to max out the volume to understand any dialog in Oblivion).
But I don't think dedicated gaming notebooks will do any better... -
I just ordered a macbook air today and need to know if the 128gb SSD is enough space. I presently have a macbook pro and am using only 30gb hard drive space so, the apple rep said 128 is enough as I do not load much pictures or gaming etc. Also is i5 ok.
Id choose the I5 yes, depends on what your usage is going to be,
....your question about "128 gig being enough" begs the question for IDEALIZED USE of your macbook AIr
In the case of a Macbook Air with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace. You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
*Generally, unless you NEED the data at least once every few weeks or once a month,...it really does'nt NEED to be on the SSD of your Macbook Air.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
Ive got more APPS than any human should have on my 128gig AIR,..(50 or so),....and 10gig of working data, important files etc etc.
Still have 82gig available....... the entire point is that someone shouldnt consider the Air a "storage device" for tons of pics, music, vids, etc.
*Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
For needs of packing around a LOT of "big data" with your Air in its case..., get a nice 1TB HD for $70, or even a 2TB drive not much bigger.

Thanks!I'm going to go ahead and disagree with wjosten on this one. Macs can be great gaming machines. For example, the iMacs always have the 2nd best mobile graphics chipset available. The same can't be said for the MacBooks Pros, but if you take wjosten's advice, you won't have the luxury of the Mac OS either. I have a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro, and I play Guild Wars 2 under Boot Camp. I can play it on medium-low graphics settings with no lag, and it still looks great. I have also installed it on the Mac side using Winskin, but that's much more complex, and the results aren't as good. If you opt for the cheapest 15" MBP, you'll get a dedicated graphics chipset that will be able to play the game on high graphics settings no problem. Do the kid a favor and get him a Mac, and not a PC...

Why did my Macs initially print fine, but now will not print at all?
Full Story:
I have a wireless network at my house that consisted of a 30mb cable internet, Netgear 900n, HP Officejet Pro 8600, 2 Dell Laptops with Windows 7, a Lenovo Laptop with Windows 7, and Dell Tower with Windows 7 - All printed just fine.
The HP Officejet 8600 was added to my network about 2 months ago.
I added a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Air about 3 weeks ago. Both Macs printed just fine for about a week. Then suddenly they stopped. I spent about 2 hours on the phone with HP Service, and they finally said it must be my router. So I called Netgear. Netgear was useless! They wanted me to agree to charges for services before they would even discuss the issue.
Due to information provided by HP's service support, and because Netgear will not support their product, I promptly purchased a new router - an Apple Airport Extreme.
The Macs recognize the printer, will print if hardwired via a USB cable, but will not print wirelessly to the Officejet Pro 8600. The PCs print fine.
The frustration that is being felt is compound by the fact that the Macs printed just fine with the Officejet Pro 8600 2 weeks ago, and now the printer just shows "idle"... even with a new router. (see image below)
Please help, I appreciate any support.
As a side note, the HP Service rep was very friendly, and definitely tried to support the HP Product, which is much more than I can say about Netgear.

More likely the issue related with Multicast, which Apple devices relies on to communicate with teh device through the network.
First try unplugging the router for 30 seconds.
Plug it back to the power and wait for 2-3 minutes.
Turn the HP printer Off and back On, then check for any difference.
If the same persists, try changing your router configuration as following
Note: the settings below are not related with the HP product, I provide you the steps as a best effor and those are only based on my own knowledge. you may try modifying the router settings at your own risk:
Open the router configuration page (can be found listed as the Default Gateway by clicking the Wireless icon on the printer, then print a network configuration report.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Setup option from the menu, then click on WAN Setup.
Make sure to uncheck the box next to Disable IGMP Proxying and Apply the changes.
Click the LAN Setup on the same Setup menu.
Set the RIP Version as RIP-2 and Apply the changes.
Reboot your router and then check for any change.

I have a MacBook Pro and an 1TB WD my passport for mac. I bought a second hard drive to act as back up and when I went to do this the original passport won't mount. It is showing in disc utility but it will not repair. I am told the mac cannot repair it and I need to back up the files and then restore the hard drive. But I can't open the hard drive to move the files onto the new one!

I have a macbook pro, and am trying to update my software. I recently bought an iphone 5, and my software is to out of date to sync my phone with itunes. I currently am running 10.5.8 and I need to update to atleast 10.6.8. Just wondering if I need to purchase it from apple or if there is an easy/free way to update it.

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?
Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first. -
i have a sony vx2000 and a macbook pro and i obtained the 9 to 4 inch firewall cable. my issue is that cant get any footage from my vx2000 to my imovies. i have looked up how to do it online and they make seem like you just plug it in and go its all golden. but not for me what am i doing wrong it does seem to be recoginize that my camera is even plugged in and no way letting import of capture any of my footage to my imovies. please help
The camera must be plugged in to AC power (not batteries only). And generally, the camera should be set to Play mode, not recording mode.

i bought and downloaded iWork when i bought my macbook pro and i used to save my documents on words. then a few weeks ago, i downloaded a free trial of microsoft office but unregistered and deleted it a week after. now i can't save my documents on word. It used to ask me if I want to save my documents on word, now it doesn't. And the W icon keeps on appearing on my dock. Can I return my computer to an earlier date? Please help me. Thanks

If the purchases are all from the same account then you can share the content by authorizing each device.
If you have separate accounts then you have to be authorized to use the content purchased from another account.

I have a Macbook Pro and am having difficulty printing documents from ‘Pages' from my Hp Deskjet 1510. I have installed the necessary software for the printer and it is connected via USB. Every time I try to print the printer icon comes up as it should, 'printing' and then 'job completed' and then the icon disappears. (Nothing is printed.) I thought it might be something to do with Pages compatibility with the printer but exporting the document to Word or making it a PDF doesn’t change anything. I don’t have Microsoft Word on my computer. The scanner does work and when I printed a ‘Test Page’ that worked too.
Let me know if you know why this is happening.With these settings the network now works flawlessly, however, when i have my ethernet cable plugged in, my internet access via my airport card(on the macbook pro) is no longer available. Educated guess. The networking devices have priorities as to which are used. The standard order is that Ethernet has a higher priority than Airport.
While your Ethernet is unplugged it is inactive and the Mac ignores it. Once you plug it in, the Mac sees that it is active and switches traffic to that interface.
I actually take advantage of this feature at home, but configuring my Airport and Ethernet with identical fixed IP addresses. Normally I'll use Airport, but if I'm copying a huge file and I want faster performance, I'll just walk my MacBook (previously iBook, previously Powerbook) over to my Ethernet switch and plug in my MacBook. Magically, the Mac detects that the Ethernet is active and continues the file transfer uninterrupted over the faster 100baseT Ethernet connection. When the transfer is finished, or if I really need to move back to the Comfy Chair, I unplug the Ethernet cable, and all activity reverts back to the Airport, all without disrupting any existing networking connections.
You on the other hand have totally different settings for your Ethernet and your Airport, so when you switch to Ethernet, you basically loose your Airport connections.
Something you can try:
System Preferences -> Network
Gear icon on the bottom left, next to the [+] [-] icons.
Select *Set Service Order...*
Now Drag the network interfaces into the perfer priority order you want. In this case put Airport above Ethernet.
NOTE: You may want to create a new Network Location for this, instead of messing with your normal home Location (which is most likely the default Automatic. That way you have your original you can always fall back to.
