MacBook Pro and Princeton Synergy Monitor - why are they fighting?

I have had Macs for about 25 years (starting with a refurb MacPlus with two disk drives and no hard drive) but I am in no way a techie. My Macs have always just worked. My aluminum 13" MacBook and my several-years-old Princeton monitor will work - intermittently - and then the screen goes haywire and is completely unreadable. It seems logical that I have the right connectors, which took me a while to figure out, or else it wouldn't work at all, right? I have seen lots of posts about problems with external monitors and the MacBook Pro, but I can't figure out what to do. I have an appointment at a Genius Bar in a few days, and will carry in the monitor, which I'm sure will then work flawlessly. I really don't want to replace this monitor, because it works. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Not sure why you're pointing the blame at the MBP. I'd say your monitor is on its last legs. Or it's incompatible.
Yes, you do read a lot of posts about incompatible monitors. That doesn't mean it's a huge problem, it means that you read about here, where most people complain. Very few (meaning probably no one) come in here to say that their monitor works.

Compatibility between macbook pro and an external monitor

hi, i have a macbook pro retina 15'', with intel iris pro graphics 5200 and windows 8.1 .
i try to install an external monitor (http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?slg=en&scy=pl&ctn=17S4SB/00) with mdp - vga adapter but the resolution it is very bad and it is impossible to calibrate.
i install the driver of the monitor and the new driver of intel iris, i try every resolution but in the external monitor also 1680x1240 it's too big.
instead with os x, also 1280x1024 (recommended resolution), can be seen perfectly.

Then I would try connecting your display in the off state and then turn it on once your MBP is sleeping. It's possible the MBP, or display in fact, is getting confused.
Also, always be sure your MBP has actually made into sleep by the pusating sleep indicator light. If it isn't pulsating it isn't sleeping.

Have a new macbook pro and on the display there are 2 lines, one blue and one green on the left side. Does anyone know what the problem is. Happened after 2 weeks.

Sounds like a hardware problem. You'll need to contact Apple ASAP. Since it's so new, hopefully they will just replace it rather than making you go through the repair process, but that's up to them.

MacBook Pro and iMac dual monitor

Can I use my 24" 2008 iMac as a dual monitor to use with my 15" 2011 MacBook Pro? I have a friend who can hook his Acer laptop up to his Acer monitor and can drag windows between the two screens. I was just wondering if there was a way to do something similar with my current models of Macs. Any help would be great!

The best way is to copy the iTunes library from your Mac to the PC, so you will move everything, not only your songs. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751 (You have to do the "Restoring your iTunes Library backup" step on the PC)

MacBook Pro and Thunderbolt Monitor

I have a MacBook Pro and a Thunderbolt Monitor. The Lion and the Windows7 operating systems are installed.
My questions are:
1. Why I can't use the Thunderbolt display if I don't connect the MagSafe power which comes from Thunderbolt monitor to the MacBook? But it works with Windows7 while the MagSafe power isn't connected to the MacBook.
2. If I have to connect the MagSafe power to use the Thunderbolt display with MacOS Lion, is it harmful for the battery in the MacBook Pro? (I mean overcharging).

As Kappy said Windows has no power management capabilities for Mac. Secondly Your MagSafe Adapter and battery has been built so that it knows when it's fully charged. After it's charged, it will then become a power cord until, you un-plug it, use up the battery and need to charge it again.

Use Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk and reinstall the Mac OS X if necessary.
Lion Recovery can also help you restore your files from a Time Machine backup.

Monitor adapter for macbook pro and dell monitor

I have a MacBook Pro and a Dell monitor. The laptop has Mac OS X (Version 10.6.8). The model of the Dell monitor is a Dell E193FPp. I'd like to know what monitor adapter to get to be able to connect the 2 together. Anyone have any ideas?

MacBook Pro & Cintiqu 13HD & Another monitor

I have the new retina display MacBook Pro 15 inch 2.3Ghz with Retina display and a Samsung 24" monitor that uses my HDMI port. I would like to also purchase a Cintiqu 13HD. Is it possible to have the Cintiqu and the Samsung monitor all plugged into my MacBook Pro and have 3 monitors essentially? If I need to purchase other cables to make this happen please let me know. I have a 15" MBP and 23" Cinema Display, and my monitor has recently started doing similar things. Computer does not recognize display. Also the display's power on led on the front is not on constantly like it was in the past.
It feels like the monitor is starting to fail.
This monitor was never transported after it was first setup.

Hi, yes preferences sees there is a second display it recognises what make of monitor it is etc but I just get a blank blue screen on the monitor when I change it to the hdmi setting! I have tried with mirroring on and off, rearranging the displays in the preference window and lots of different resolution settings but with no difference.
An old MacBook connects fine so the monitor and hdmi port must be okay. I'm sure we have used the cable before but it could have been with the previous MacBook Air. The current one I'm using is a mid 2011 version running lion and is (according to software update) all up to date.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.
