MacBook Pro as an iPod?

All of my music is on my old G4 Powermac. I would like to attach my MacBook Pro and have it sync, just like an iPod. Then I can take it to the living room, work, etc. and listen to all of my music.
I know I can replace my MacBook Pro's music library by using FireWire target disk mode, but a simple iPod-like sync would be much easier. Any way to do this?

well if it's as the OP said that he just wants to be able to take the other computer into the living room and listen to what's on the other machine, then shared music library over the wifi network allows just this.
otherwise, it's not such a big deal to copy the itunes library folder from one computer to another.
or, you can get an airport express or apple TV and then stream your music to the home stereo or TV or whatever.
but I don't really see what would be easier about some kind of 'sync' system.. shared music over the network already allows a cleaner way to achieve the same effect. and for the times you want to access that music away from being on the network, then there's nothing stopping you from just copying the itunes library to your second machine. it's just a folder. drag and drop. how much easier can it get?

  • I just got a new Macbook Pro, plugged my iPod into it and lost all my songs on my iPod.  How do I get them back?

I just got a new MacBook Pro, plugged my iPod into it and noticed all my songs didn't transfer, including the 6 new ones I just purchased.  I then brought it back to my PC to sync, and lost all my songs on my iPod.  I'm now receiving all kinds of weird messages that the name of my iPod is a duplicate and cannot be synced (no matter what I put in it).  During the process of loading it on my Mac., a bunch of odd emails were popping up to sync.  I just kept deleting and adding mine.  Is it corrupted? What have I done??? I am a personal trainer and live by my iPod.  Please help.

Your post is abit confusing, especially on getting those weird messages and emails,( assumed in your Windows machine.)
Most likely you have Restored the iPod using the new Macbook pro, using the same name as that in your Windows machine, hence the duplicate name warning, as it is trying to sync Automatically.
If you are syncing your iPod to both the Mac and Windows, you must set it to Manually Manage Music, in the first machine that you setup iTunes with the iPod. Read thsi Apple Support Article
In iTunes, Preference, tick on Prevent devices syncing automatically
Hopefully your music are still in both your iTunes library,
Connect the iPod to the Mac
Restore it (just to fix any filesystem corruption by the Windows end)
Set it to Manually Manage Music
Sync your selected songs in your library.
    Whern sync complete, Eject it
Connect it to your Windows PC.
Select the song in the library
    Sync it.
It should work if your ipod Hardisk is not giving any problem.
    Good luck!

  • Sync MacBook Pro to my iPod

I need to sync my MacBook Pro to my iPod but all I see so far is taking the sync the other direction.
I have 1400 tunes on my iPod.
Same tunes are on my iMac so I can use either the iPod or the iMac to put the music on my MBP.

I have airport express but it is not recognised by either my macbook pro or my ipod on my wireless network. It does not show in airport utility. Might I not have an airport card?
If both your MacBook Pro and iPod are unable to "see" the Wi-Fi network provided by the AirPort Express, it is most likely NOT that you are missing an "airport card," but the Express may be the issue instead.
One quick test is to see if either device can "see" other Wi-Fi networks. If they can, then you can definately rule both of them out as the issue.
By default, the AirPort Express will broadcast an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. Can either device see this network? If not, then I would recommend that you perform a "factory default" reset on the Express, and then, check again.

  • My ipod classic wont work with my new macbook pro?, My ipod classic wont work with my new macbook pro?

My ipod classic, (that I've previously used on another mac), is not working on my new Macbook Pro??  I've had all my music transered to my new Macbook, but can't upload anything onto my ipod :-(

When I tried the headsets again, they all work. I didn't have one of them plugged in far enough. I guess didn't want to breakanything. Thanks for your reply. All fixed!!

  • MacBook Pro not charging iPod Touch 4G!

Hello. Today I plugged in my iPod Touch 4th Generation into my 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and it started charging, but about 15 seconds later it would stop charging it and I would have to unplug it and then plug it to charge it again. I grew suspicious that something was wrong with my iPod and not my Mac, but when I plugged my iPod into an outlet, it charged all the way with no problems. Is something in my MacBook denying the charging of my iPod Touch 4G and how do I fix it??
I also don't want this to effect syncing issues as well, and converting music to iTunes from my iPod.

Did you tried rebooting the Mac?
    Tried another USB port?
    Did it work OK before?
When the Mac sleeps the USB ports will not charge the iPod.

  • I plug my iPod touch into my new macbook pro and the iPod icon shows up in iTunes, but does not show up anywhere in the finder or on my desktop...?

I need to transfer the music off of my ipod onto my mac but i cannot do that when my macbook will not recognize my ipod touch in the finder.

This is correct.  It will not show in finder.  It is not an external storage device.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.  Open itunes connect ipod, do not sync, click File>Transfer Purchases

  • MacBook Pro killed my iPod?

I recently purchased a 15" MacBookPro and swapped all my data over from my Powerbook, including my iTunes library. When I decided to sync my iPod with the new laptop it said that there were differences between the MacBook and iPod libraries and would I like it to line everything up. I didn't understand why there would be any differences because the libraries were pretty identical (I hadn't added much music to iTunes since my last iPod update, maybe 2 albums) but I gave it the ok.
Well I guess it decided to completely copy everything over to the iPod because it took quite some time. I walked away, and returned a few minutes later to find that the MacBook had gone to sleep. I tried to wake it, but when it came back on I had the spinning beach ball. Every app I tried to use would freeze in succession. I finally pulled the iPod out of the MacBook, which allowed it to return to normal operation.
Now the iPod won't turn on past the black Apple. It won't show up in Disk Utility, and the iPod Updater won't see it. I can hear the drive spinning, but thats all it does. Many resets have done nothing to help.
I believe this one is referred to as a 3rd gen iPod (4 buttons)?
What happened and what can I do to fix it?

    Hi,
First, the faulty HDD does not mean it is Dead, or it can be just some bad sectors on it. Of course, I can be wrong.
Hope that you can see your iPod under the disk utility, then try to do the following
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
I have no experience to replace a HDD, so I can make any comments that whether it is worth to replace the HDD, however, do remember that the fresh HDD is without any iPod software pre-installed, it is running a risk that it cant be recognized by a computer to do a Restore. With a cost of $115, I will rather to go for a new iPod instead.
