Macbook pro as desktop replacement?

I'm thinking of getting a 15" Macbook Pro and a cinema display to replace my aging imac (snowball) and ibook. I've never used a laptop in this way before. What are the pros and cons to this setup? (i.e., heat issues, keeping the macbook pro on all the time, etc.)
Thank you!

I disagree with the suggestion that an imac is always a better solution unless you need portability.
with the MBP, you get a PCexpress slot which is a significant avenue for further expansion of the machine that you do not get with any model of imac.
these days I think it's important to rethink the whole 'do you need portability or not?' question, because things really have changed recently. not so long ago, getting a notebook meant paying a serious premium, but also accepting the fact that for your money, you had to live with a very underpowered machine with far more limited expansion options and very cramped drive space, compared to what your money would get you in a non-portable computer. so it really was of paramount importance to decide if you really couldn't live without portability in order to get a machine that could do what you needed it to do. it's not so any more. buying an apple notebook gives you desktop-class performance, equal to the very fastest imac you can buy, which even then you need to custom order to get the fastest CPU. yes it's still true that there is a price variation in what you get for your money, but it's not in the same league as when top-flight powerbooks were well over a thousand bucks more than what they are now... and not only more expensive, but also significantly less powerful for your money. so going for the powerbook really did mean you had to think carefully about your need for portability, cos it was a purchase with several drawbacks. nowadays, the idea of portability is something you can consider with much less severity because you're going to get a machine that really doesn't compromise on performance.. so the idea of it being portable as a bonus is something you can really consider in a way you never could before.

I set up homesharing between macbook pro and desktop pc.  I have attempted to sync songs on my mac and pc, but the ipod will not sync the full library.  why not?

    Hey harold WD!
You will want to consolidate your entire library onto one computer using Home Sharing in order to sync all of these items onto your iPod. Use the following article to help you accomplish this:

  • Macbook Pro remote desktop unable to connect to my office PC. Genius Bar told me the only solution was to wipe my Mac. Really??

I work remotely using my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.5.8) to connect to my office PC. I have always had issues using my "computer name" with the RDC but have no problem when using the IP address. Two weeks ago my company upgraded their server and ever since I have been unable to access the server. My coworkers (who use Macs) are not having the same problems as me. My IT guy was able to connect using my Mac, his security clearance and IP address. However, I no longer have the option of using the IP address to log in - per my IT guy. My IT guy is a PC guy so he suggested that I take my computer to Apple to see whats blocking me.
I met with Apple support at the Genius bar yesterday and was told basically it could be a problem with my computer and I needed to wipe it clean and start over. This was the proposed solution to the problem but the Mac guy I spoke with didn't seem completely sure this would solve / is the cause of the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions for figuring out what the root problem is prior to me wiping my Mac? Has anyone had issues working with remote desktop connection from their Mac connecting to a PC?
    I appreciate any help possible!

There are no songs on your iPod, right (since it was restored)?
Make sure the software on your computer is up to date...
    iTunes
    iPod Updater
    Update iPod's Software
Also, try connecting the iPod via a different USB port.
You may want to try putting the iPod in Disk Mode prior to connecting it and see if you are able to restore it (while it is in Disk Mode)...
    Putting iPod into Disk Mode
Finally, if you can't get the iPod to restore, then try connecting it and opening My Computer. Does the iPod show up in My Computer? Try right clicking it and going to Format. Does anything happen?

  • MacBook Pro - Hard Drive replaced now external won't allow me to view any of my back ups from my previous hard drive that crashed folders have red circle with minus sign in them and says I don't have permission, how do I get around this?

My MacBook Pro's hard drive failed a little while back and the hard drive was replaced, however all my items on my external were linked to that hard drive apparently, now I can't get into my back up files for my business as I'm getting an error telling me I don't have permission to view the files, I can't figure out how to over ride this setting to get to my stuff for my business which is really NOT GOOD for my clients or the contracts I'm under, does anyone know how to get past this and get the external to work like it is supposed to?

Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions.

    Hello,
I just had my macbook pro 15 inch (early 2008, core 2 duo) motherboard replaced but It seems like I can´t register it. I just bought a Mountain Lion update as well but it seems that iMessage won´t work while my computer's serial number is not recognized.
There are no available apple stores in my country and when registering, the system doesn't recognize the part number I have.
What can be done about it?

  • 2007 Macbook Pro garbled desktop display.

    Hello,
I have a 2007 Macbook Pro which seems to boot ok but when it loads the desktop the whole display is garbled. I can see parts of the desktop background but also streaks and bizzare shapes. The cursor moves but is also displayed in a bizzarre way and beyond that nothing is recognizable on the screen.
Any tips on figuring this out are much appreciated.

  • Why RAM Preview 2x faster on Macbook Pro vs Desktop PC?

    Hello everyone,
I RAM Previewed a few seconds of an AE CS6 project on a Desktop PC I recently had custom-built, and was distraught to discover it was twice as slow as previewing the exact clip on my Macbook Pro. The project involves simple 3D camera movements. Why might this be so, and can I tweak my PC settings to get more out of it?? I will greatly appreciate any feedback I can get...I'm still new to the Adobe world, and even newer to computer configuration. Thank you!

  • Setup for Macbook Pro & XP desktop with one monitor (Cintiq21UX from WACOM)

Is there a way to use the Cintiq 21UX as a monitor for both my my new Macbook Pro laptop & a Windows XP desktop? I would rather not have to change cables and have heard about a KVM switch from IOGEAR that might give this functionality. Ideally, I would use a single display, keyboard and mouse with both computers when using Photoshop. I don't know if the keyboard & mouse is a realistic goal.
    My questions:
    1. Will the KVM switch work at full resolution of the Macbook Pro and the XP? Will I need to adjust any settings?
    2. What should I know about purchasing a KVM switch? What specs are needed to make it work with the single monitor? With the single monitor, keyboard and mouse?
    3. What issues, if any, will I experience?
    Many thanks in advance!

  • MacBook Pro Retina lid replacement

    Hello everybody.
I have a 15" MacBook Pro Retina, and I have recently damaged the top lid.
The damage is minimal - the edge of the lid is now a bit curved inwards in one place. The screen wasn't damaged at all, everything is perfect.
Still, I want to replace the lid. But as I searched the net, I only found offers for full screen-and-lid replacement.
It costs too much, and I would not like to do that.
So the question: is it technically possible to replace the top lid on the macbook? I have read that on some models the display is not detachable from the metal lid, does that appeal to the mid2014 MacBook Pro Retina 15"?

I'm not sure that anyone has experience w/ this problem. It used to be that you could remove the front glass. It was glued in however, and removal was a very tricky process. In many other newer models, the Air comes to mind, there are fewer sub assemblies.  The keyboard, touch pad and battery are all part of the top case and can't be separated. Seems silly but that's the way things are now.

  • Need a guru to advise me on MacBook Pro 17 screen replacement...

Can anyone tell me +with absolute certainty+ whether I can or cannot replace the broken 1680x1050 LCD screen in my 1st Gen. MacBook Pro 17 (2.16GHz) with the higher resolution 1900x1200 LCD screen? (My current understanding is that the graphics cards are the same among the various releases of the 17" MacBook Pro, but... Is that all I need to be concerned about?)
+Please note that I'm seeking a definitive answer; "I think you should be able to" or "I don't see why not" doesn't help me.+
    Thanks.

4-5 years old. And at a point in time when the sweet smell of new models is wafting thru the rumor halls? I would say no. Either get a new one with the latest technology, or get a great deal on an inventory sale item. And if the screen is the only abused component, you may get some cash back by parting out the rest.
If you must go ahead and resuscitate, consider around $200-$300 for a used screen of unknown quality.
Target Disk Mode is good for saving the goodies. Else, take the HDD out, mount it on an external enclosure.

  • MacBook pro retina repair/ replacement

Hi, basically I am experiencing problems with my macbook pro retina which I have only had for a few days. Unfortunately, when I turn on and off the laptop it takes a considerable amount of time to turn off (20-25 seconds), and the battery overheats quite quickly even though there is no software other than the default whereas my mum's takes about 2-3 seconds and she has quite a bit of software installed such as Logic Pro and final cut pro whereas I have nothing and I erased the memory and reinstalled the mac os x and still it is the same. My laptop still takes a long time to shut down and lags whilst on safari or YouTube. I am a bit disappointed as this is a new macbook and it is very slow in comparison with the other one and they have the exact same specs and are the macbook model. I think the harddrive could be faulty so would it do any harm to take it to a genius bar and see if they could either replace the ssd or the macbook?

I don't. My guess is they will first check it out to determine if it is repairable. Then they get an authorization from Apple for the repair. I don't know how long that may take. Furthermore, if there is already a queue of other repairs, then wait your turn. That could take more than a day in some cases. Not until they determine that it cannot be repaired would they replace it, and not until Apple authorizes a replacement.
I'm afraid I'm of little use to answering the question. You would be better off asking at the Apple store you go to.

  • MacBook Pro Hard drive replaced, now what?

    Hi,
A couple of days ago we took our MacBook Pro to the Apple store to have it looked up. We had been getting the blinking question mark file folder. They told us the hard drive needed to be replaced. The lady said doing it ourselves was faster, easy, and cheaper. So we bought a new internal hard drive and put it in. We then talked to a man at Apple who gave us specific instructions on what to do from there. We opened up disk utility and started the partitioning. However, it froze midway and stayed there all night. The next morning I called Apple again. The lady told me to shut it down and start all over. So I shut it down and started internet recovery again. Then I tried to do the disk utility again. It didn't work. I was then told to erase the drive and try starting over, because there was something on it from the initial attempt at partitioning it. However, it is now frozen again and says that it is going to be another 4 hours, and the time continuously increases. What is going on? If I turn it off and try to start over what will happen? What should I do from here? Please help!! We need this computer for grad school classes that start tomorrow!!
    Thank you SO much!

  • MacBook Pro 2011 / HDD replace with SSD - power issue

I recently replaced on a MBP 2011 2.5 core5 the 500 MB HDD with a Samsung 850Pro SSD. All went well with regards to cloning throught the apple disk utility.
But i noticed the MBP seems to "burn" more power, meaning the battery life is reduced. It is not clear to me why replace the HDD by the SSD means a shorter battery life. Is there a compability issue with the  http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MZ-7KE1T0BW ?
    Any suggestions ?

Sorry, but you typed, "My 2014 model macbook pro 's logic board got damaged."
Apple does not accept trade-ins. You can try selling it on eBay or Craigslist or sell it for cash to companies like Gazelle.com. Then buy a newer model with the proceeds plus added cash, if required.

  • MacBook Pro ( Late 2007) Replacement LCD Issues

    Hey everyone,
I'm new to the forum and I was hoping you guys could help me out.
I have a MacBook Pro 2,2Ghz Santa Rosa, with a failing LCD. ( 2/3 of the LCD panel are just black...) So, I took it appart and found the panel inside my MBP to be a LG LP154WP2 TL-A1. I bought a new LCD panel from eBay which was described as being compatible with my MBP. When it arrived, it turned out to be a LG LP154WP2 TL-A3.
When I connect this panel to my MBP logicboard, I only get a white screen. System boots up normaly and I can see it in the network, and when I hook op an external display, is get a normal dekstop.
I did a SMC reset twice, cleared the NVRAM/PRAM and triple checked al connections ( LVDS on logicboard and display ) but everything is oke.
The eBay seller claims this panel has to work with this model MacBook Pro, and actually send me another panel, also a TL-A3, but I get the same white screen.. When I hook up the original TL-A1, I get picture again...
So my question, Is the TL-A3 panel compatible with my MBP, or do I need a different revision LVDS cable, or what else am I doing wrong?
Thanks for the help in advance

    Hi Wiebo,
seeing you are also from the Low Countries (I am from Flanders), I could just as easily answer you in Dutch. For good Forum order, lets stick to English.
From experience, I can tell you that a blank display is mostly due to a faulty Data Display Cable or connector, in both cases in this thread possibly an incompatible cable or connector, probably meaning you will have to stick to the exact TL-A1 in both your cases. If the new display has a bigger resolution than the original, probably the cable will have more data lines.
Do the connectors on the TFT side look exactly alike on both the defective TFT and the replacement part?
Also, you could as a last resort try to put the connectors on the mainboard slightly askew. I have a Powerbook which was cured in this way.
    Good luck!
