MacBook Pro - Battery behaving very strangely

I have noticed there are already many threads on this, couldn't decide which one to post in so am starting a new one.
I have a MBP 2.33 C2D 17" from late 2006. Last year I experienced the 'expanding battery' problem, my battery totally warped out of shape and was not working properly. After a fair bit of trouble with Apple France (who basically said, too bad, buy a new one), I eventually was able to go above their heads and get Apple to send me a free replacement. This seemed fair seeing as I had bought my MBP within the timeframe of an official battery recall published on the Apple site. The new battery worked absolutely fine, and is now still less than a year old.
Recently though, it has started to behave very strangely. I hadn't made any connection that it could be to do with having upgraded to Snow Leopard, but in retrospect, after reading many of the threads here, it does seem likely that this is the case.. I recently did a big upgrade from Tiger to SL on this very machine, and it has been since then that I've had very erratic battery behaviour.
My symptoms are similar to many I've read here: The remaining battery time (when not connected to AC) will jump from say 3 hours down to 15 mins very suddenly. Then sometimes it will jump back up again. Sometimes my battery health condition will say 'replace now', other times 'replace soon' or other times 'normal'. Also, sometimes the machine will just go to sleep with no warning, even when it had estimated more than an hour of battery time left.. upon reconnection to AC, suddenly it says 0%.
I have always been careful to power cycle the battery properly, to let it run down regularly. Also since noticing this problem, the first thing I tried to do was recalibrate.. But I've tried twice now with no success. I let the machine run right down till it went to sleep, then left it on overnight, waiting for the power LED to stop flashing on the front of the machine.. But it wouldn't stop flashing even after being left off overnight. I have yet to try an SMC reset, will do that next.
I realize my battery is not brand new, nor is my computer. However, this was a replacement battery I received less than a year ago. I'll put the battery stats below, but I'm not sure I believe them because I've been checking what is says a lot recently and sometimes it even shows a full charge capacity of a negative number! Something strange is going on here. I obviously don't expect full performance from a battery nearly a year old, but what it's doing here seems to be more than just a case of a battery getting old, especially having seen that many other users are having a similar set of symptoms after going to Snow Leopard.

I just got off a call with Apple support. The tech agreed that my symptoms were not normal, even for a battery with a cycle count over 300 like mine.. especially with the fact that the system profiler is showing bizarre info that makes no sense such as a full charge of a negative number. He said that basically the only thing I can try is to do an archive and reinstall of Snow Leopard, since it seems that the operating system is possibly corrupted. I don't think it's anything to do with the physics of the battery, it is more likely that the OS is not interacting properly with the battery, thus giving false and conflicting readings and information.. He seemed quite certain that it can't be a problem with Snow Leopard itself, seeing as all of the laptops in the Apple Support office were on SL and did not have this problem. So in his opinion, a corrupted OS was the most likely explanation. In any case, he said that batteries are only covered by a 90 day guarantee, so if it turns out that after a reinstall, my problem doesn't go away, then I'll have no choice but to buy a new battery because they won't cover it... This doesn't seem very fair to me because if it turns out that the OS has nothing to do with it, then it must be a faulty battery, because this kind of behaviour is certainly not what I'd call acceptable for a battery of less than a year old.
Anyway, I'll perhaps try the archive and install process on the weekend and see what happens.

My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
    HELP PLEASE
    Very worried!!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • My MacBook Pro is running very slowly! Please help!

Hi all, as of late last year my MacBook Pro started running very slowly. As I'm a novice when it comes to computers I thought I'd turn to the interweb for solutions. I've tried a couple of basic things but don't seem to be getting anywhere.I ran the EtreCheck program as it seemed to help others. Would love some help interpreting this...

    Thanks in advance! Mike

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but there should be no beachballing. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Dota 2 and Macbook pro battery

My early 2011 15 inch macbook pro battery drains while connected with 85w charger when i am playing dota 2. Dota 2 runs faily well with very little lag in almost high setting. Shouldn't 85w charger provide adequte power for gaming. Dota 2 is not even a very demanding game. I have only played few small 2d games in my pro and this may be the first time i am playing a 3d game. And also sometimes it doesnt drain even when i play 2-3 matches but most of the other times it drains in single match. I have yet to see it drain down 90% but still. What options do i have to fix this? I am graphic designer so i sometimes do video editing in my macbook pro and i m quite sure some of those renderings are more system hungry than dota 2 and no drain while doing that. Thanks in advance.

What do you mean it didn't work? Are you having a battery issue that the update did not fix? Need some more info. If you look at the webpage that I linked to, it advises to have affected batteries replaced.
    Identifying an affected battery
Affected batteries will have one or more of the following symptoms:
Battery is not recognized causing an “X” to appear in the battery icon in the Finder menu bar.
Battery will not charge when computer is plugged into AC power.
Battery exhibits low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count (as shown in System Profiler) of less than 300.
    Battery pack is visibly deformed.
Note: If your MacBook or MacBook Pro battery does not have any of the symptoms noted above, your battery does not need to be replaced.
If you're replacing batteries every 3 months I would take a look at how you are maintaining your battery. Are you calibrating it when it arrives and then every 6 to 8 weeks afterword? Are you running graphically intensive programs? Do you have a lot of background process in your activity monitor that are taxing the system? Most folks I have seen post here find their battery issues resolved after a replacement, not recurring every 3 months.

  • HT204347 Do you connect the charger in the MacBook Pro battery damage if using device ?

Do you connect the charger in the MacBook Pro battery damage if using device ?
i am sorry i not good speak english

Provided you are using the correct charger for your Mac (13" have a 65 watt charger, 15" and 17", an 85 watt charger), it has enough capacity to power the computer for normal tasks, and the leftover power can charge the battery at the same time. If you are doing something very intensive, there may not be leftover power, but the Mac will take power from the battery if needed. Once the battery is fully charged, the pilot light in the charger plug will change from orange to green and no further charge will be applied to the battery.
You can use your Mac plugged to the charger with no damage to the battery or the computer.

  • Trackpad began to behave very strangely

After installation Mac OS X v10.7 Lion on my MacBook Air trackpad began to behave very strangely. I just moving the pointer but it's clicking during the movings (closing windows, tapping links etc).
    So, how to fix it?

48 hours ago, I installed Lion on my Macbook purchased in the spring of 2009.  Everything seemed normal, until I went to type.  Regardless if it was in Facebook to reply to a thread, Text Edit, Mac Mail, my cursor would erratically act possessed, cursor appearing in the middle of a blue highlighted portion of what I had just typed.  I was cursing my Macbook, wondering what on earth was wrong!
I should state that when I installed Lion, it was from Leopard.  I erased Leopard entirely from my hard drive from the Lion disk utility.  I did my updates.  Called Apple Tech Support today, ended up with a supervisor.  Both people I spoke to were terrific.  During this phone call, I was advised to reinstall Lion without erasing it from my hard drive.  Just to reinstall over the top of what was already on my hard drive.  Did this, and to my surprise two software updates arose for Airport Utility and iTunes!!  Did those updates.  It didn't require a reboot.
I still had erratic-possessed cursor problems.  At this point, I went to my iMac desktop, unplugged my new keyboard, and plugged the usb keyboard into my Macbook.  This worked beautifully.  At this point the lightbulb turned on.  With the wired usb keyboard plugged in, I shut down my Macbook.  I unplugged the USB keyboard, and rebooted my Macbook.  My Macbook keyboard, cursor, trackpad are now cooperating in the manner in which they should be.
I can only suggest to reinstall Lion, without reformatting your hard drive.  Check for updates.  Reboot.  Try my external USB keyboard suggestion.  GOOD LUCK!

MacBook Pro battery had accumulated more than a 1000 charges, and stopped functioning unexpectedly. Went and got the battery replaced. Just saw that SMC Firmware 1.6 update deals with this. Possible to get my money back?

The firmware update corrects an error that may occur, however the techs would have checked the condition of the battery prior to installing a new one.  If the battery was questionable, the firmware update was really not too important.
You can check the battery condition by going to the apple, left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power and see what it says about Cycle Count, Condition, Capacity: Condition anything but Normal needs to be checked and may need to be replaced.
The cycle count of 1,000 charge cycles is the typical life of a Lithium-Ion battery, the point at which the capacity drops to 80% of the as built capacity.

  • Address Book behaves very strange

    Hello members and outside viewers,
First thing: My Address Book behaves very strange.
    - After startup, the window freezes. Only if I minimize and click again, works OK. I began used to it, BUT
    - Since yesterday, Addresses gone, disappeared from every entry.
    - Under Preferences » Address Format is uneditable, it has "Item3" in it, unclickable drop down menu.
    - Under Preferences »Template » Add Field several options are grey: "Phone", "Email", "Related Names", "Instant Messaging", "Address".
Please can you help me! I deleted both plist files from Preferences folder and deleted the whole folder under Application Support/AddressBook, also reinstalled Address Book from Leopard DVD, but nothing helped so far.
Second thing: when I invoke Spotlight, and start typing after 2-3 seconds, it quits and also Dock unusable, restarts automatically. Spotlight is useless, it behaves every time like this. Spotlight in Finder windows are OK, system-wide menubar has this error. Also, it was suddenly gone wrong like Address Book. Can I think of some virus?
P.S. (off topic), might helpful to share: very frustating, that registering to Discussions took me over an hour.
    - With Safari 4.03 the "Name" and "AppleID" are blank fields on "Create New User Account", therefore impossible to proceed. ( Error: invalid AppleID. Please login with a different AppleID )
    - With Firefox you can actually see them, but "?" instead of accounted letters.
    - After changing My Info, I finally realised that Apple ID should be complete e-mail address.
    - That means my "visionfresh" account is totally different from "[email protected]" (or me.com, whatever..)
    - Not to mention that I created a new Apple ID, that was also not working.
    - Bottom line: my "[email protected]" account is working also in Safari after editing my Name (replace accented characters), but I could not proceed with the nickname "visionfresh", I chose "matyashuszar".

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

  • My Macbook Pro is running very slow, what can I do?

My Macbook Pro is running very slowly, what can I do?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with a visit to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

You don't need ANY of this external drive software, you should uninstall them.

Thats a start. Why are you using Chrome? Of the three main browsers Chrome is probably the worst. Try Safari or Firefox. I'm not familiar with GlimmerBlocker or BackBlaze, you might try disabling them to see if things improve. I don't see any other software related issues.
Edit: FlashPlayer is out of date. Update that by entering www.adobe.com into your browsers address bar and follow the links ro FP. Never click on a link to update software.....too many redirects to tainted installers.
