MacBook Pro battery: Conditioning and using

So, my question is mainly this: Is it harmful to ALWAYS leave the power cord attached and plugged in on my wonderful MacBook Pro? Or is it best to use on battery power only until it is nearly drained?
Also, does one need to condition the battery after so many hours of use?
Thanks

Most of the time my Macbook Pro (first generation) is plugged in, running on A/C power. I have done so for about 7 or 8 months when I first got it. Lately I've been using the battery as it should be used and I've noticed some minor changes with the battery and battery life. Occasionally the battery power meter would show it at only 47940 mWh (at 100%, fully charged), then when I recallibrate it, it would jump back to around 55000 as it was designed straight from the factory.
Again I would take the charger off and use it, and it would only be on a/c when it was being charged. Sometimes it fluctuates drastically, (usually once or twice a month) but a simple recallibration fixes the problem. I'm thinking the reason why it's not constant and steady is because for the first 7 or 8 months of its life it has always been running off the a/c power.
I don't know if this is irregular, it certainly doesn't bother me, but it's just an example that you can look at if you decide how to condition your battery in the future.

i am sorry i not good speak english

Provided you are using the correct charger for your Mac (13" have a 65 watt charger, 15" and 17", an 85 watt charger), it has enough capacity to power the computer for normal tasks, and the leftover power can charge the battery at the same time. If you are doing something very intensive, there may not be leftover power, but the Mac will take power from the battery if needed. Once the battery is fully charged, the pilot light in the charger plug will change from orange to green and no further charge will be applied to the battery.
You can use your Mac plugged to the charger with no damage to the battery or the computer.

    Reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
It's clear that the battery has got enough capacity to work correctly, so something happens with the MagSafe port or its charger. If you have another charger, try it, and if not, take the MacBook and the charger to an Apple Store or reseller. It's better to do this as we don't know if the problem is in the charger or in the MacBook Pro

  • HT1695 Ipad will not find wireless networks that it used yesterday, but MacBook Pro still finds and uses these networks.

Our ipad will not find wireless networks that it used yesterday.   Our Mac Book Pro finds them and uses them.
we have reset the cable modem and wireless router, turned off the ipad and turned it back on.   Turned wireless off and back on.
but it just spins trying to find networks but finds none.
    What do do next?

Settings for wireless network connections are actually stored in two separate places on your Mac, so in addition to the correct advice offered by Jolly Giant, you will also need to delete old network listings in KeyChain Access.
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access
Locate the name of the wireless network that you want to delete and click it to highlight it
    Click Delete on your keyboard
It would be a good idea to go ahead and also delete the current connection as well in case it has become corrupted. This will clear out the old settings and when you next connect to the network and enter the password, the new settings will be preserved.

  • MacBook Pro Battery overheating and expanding

I purchased a MacBook Pro three years ago and have not had any problems with it. However, during the last month the battery has been getting very hot. And within the last week or two, the battery cover has been expanding and coming loose. I'm guessing that the battery needs to be replaced. But at the moment I don't have the funds to purchase a new one. Can I still run the laptop with the AC power connected and the battery out of the computer? Or will this hurt the laptop?

It's perfectly safe for your hardware to run without the battery. You should be aware however that should there be even the briefest interruption of power, you will lose anything you might be working on if you have not saved it.
Your MacBook will also run at nearly half its normal speed if you use it with the battery removed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2332
Regardless of the two issues raised above, you should not continue to use your machine with that battery installed. It is possible for the expanding battery to create enough upwards pressure to damage the logic board or to cause trackpad/keyboard problems.

  • Early 2013 13" MacBook Pro runs slow and uses a lot of RAM, why and what can be done?

    Problem description:
My computer is using a lot of RAM. Wondering if there’s a hardware issue, or a software issue, or something else. I currently have no programs open in the Doc, besides EntreCheck. and the RAM is showing about 75% used. I’m looking for suggestions on what I can do to speed it up and make it more functional, and efficient for doing design work. I recently upgraded from the original 4GB RAM (2x2GB), and from the original HD to a 512 GB SSD drive, and upgraded to Yosemite. Perhaps that was too much for this machine? Please help with anything that I can do to make it better! Thanks in advance!
I have a recent back-up, I'm open to saving user files and starting from scratch with the current hardware, etc... but would need some direction on how to do this. I did upgrade myself using Apple provided instructions.

Here's the new EtreCheck that I just ran. At a glance, it seems I may have missed deleting some things or they are stored in an additional location? I haven't jumped into anything yet to really test if there's a difference in performance for me. Once I do I will post that information.

  • Macbook Pro battery drained and now it won't turn on

I have an early 2012 Macbook Pro. A couple of weeks ago my charger broke and I couldn't get a new one straight away, so the battery drained and it shut off. I don't normally let that happen, but there wasn't a whole lot I could do about it this time. I have a new magsafe charger now and the LED is solid orange as normal, but the macbook still wont turn on even though it's been charging for a good 50 minutes now. It sounded like it was booting up a couple of times and the first time the screen lit up grey and the loading animation (grey bars) showed up, but now it's just black again. I know it's going to take longer than normal to charge after the battery being completely drained for so long, but is it normal for it to take so long or does it sound like it's bolloxed?

    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/ht3964
If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.
    Ciao.

The firmware update corrects an error that may occur, however the techs would have checked the condition of the battery prior to installing a new one.  If the battery was questionable, the firmware update was really not too important.
You can check the battery condition by going to the apple, left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power and see what it says about Cycle Count, Condition, Capacity: Condition anything but Normal needs to be checked and may need to be replaced.

    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
Apple has recently discovered that some batteries used in its MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks may have battery performance issues. Apple is offering a software update that is designed to improve battery performance.
The battery update is available immediately via Software Update or downloadable here.
Note: The factors causing the performance issues do not present a safety risk. You may continue to use your current battery.
This battery update should be run on all MacBook and MacBook Pro computers and extra batteries that were purchased between February 2006 and April 2007.
If, after you have installed the battery update, your battery has any of the symptoms listed below, please make a reservation to bring your computer with its battery to your local Apple Retail Store, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), or call your local Apple Support Contact Center. If Apple or an AASP determines that your battery is eligible for replacement, you will receive a new battery, free of charge, even if your MacBook or MacBook Pro is out of warranty.
For MacBook and MacBook Pro systems with Intel Core Duo processors, this program extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer.
    Identifying an affected battery
Affected batteries will have one or more of the following symptoms:
Battery is not recognized causing an “X” to appear in the battery icon in the Finder menu bar.
Battery will not charge when computer is plugged into AC power.
Battery exhibits low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count (as shown in System Profiler) of less than 300.
    Battery pack is visibly deformed.
Note: If your MacBook or MacBook Pro battery does not have any of the symptoms noted above, your battery does not need to be replaced.
    Next Steps
To participate in this worldwide program, your MacBook or MacBook Pro battery must show the symptoms noted above. If it does, please make a reservation to bring your computer and battery to your local Apple Retail Store, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), or call your local Apple Support Contact Center. The U.S. support number is 1-800-275-2273. If you are located outside the U.S., please see Apple's international contact list for your local Apple Technical Support phone number. An Apple technical support representative or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) will determine if the battery is eligible for replacement, free of charge. Customers are responsible for transportation costs to eligible AASPs and retail stores.
If a replacement battery is sent to you via airmail, it is important that you return the older battery to Apple so that it can be properly recycled.
This program extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer for Intel Core Duo-based MacBook and MacBook Pro computers. Apple will continue to evaluate the battery update program and will provide further extensions as needed. Apple also reserves the right to modify the program if other solutions that address the battery performance issues become available.

For MacBook and MacBook Pro systems with Intel Core Duo processors, this program extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer.
Pretty nice change for those C2D's

  • Dota 2 and Macbook pro battery

My early 2011 15 inch macbook pro battery drains while connected with 85w charger when i am playing dota 2. Dota 2 runs faily well with very little lag in almost high setting. Shouldn't 85w charger provide adequte power for gaming. Dota 2 is not even a very demanding game. I have only played few small 2d games in my pro and this may be the first time i am playing a 3d game. And also sometimes it doesnt drain even when i play 2-3 matches but most of the other times it drains in single match. I have yet to see it drain down 90% but still. What options do i have to fix this? I am graphic designer so i sometimes do video editing in my macbook pro and i m quite sure some of those renderings are more system hungry than dota 2 and no drain while doing that. Thanks in advance.

What do you mean it didn't work? Are you having a battery issue that the update did not fix? Need some more info. If you look at the webpage that I linked to, it advises to have affected batteries replaced.

If you're replacing batteries every 3 months I would take a look at how you are maintaining your battery. Are you calibrating it when it arrives and then every 6 to 8 weeks afterword? Are you running graphically intensive programs? Do you have a lot of background process in your activity monitor that are taxing the system? Most folks I have seen post here find their battery issues resolved after a replacement, not recurring every 3 months.

  • How do I use my serial number to find information about my MacBook Pro's Processor and RAM?

So I want to find information about my MacBook Pro's processor and RAM using the serial number because the MacBook no longer works. I remember being able to find this information on the apple website before, maybe by using the coverage checker. Did they take this information out of the coverage checker? Is it no longer possible for a costumer to obtain this information?

Append the last three characters of it to http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords= and load the page.
This won't reveal how much RAM it currently has installed.

DVD drives read the bottom of the disk, not the top. Smooth out the paper & try again.
