MacBook Pro Battery Life Draining After Updating to Yosemite

Hi,
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro. After updating to Yosemite a few months, I have experienced a severe loss of battery life. I was averaging around 6-8 hours on a charge, and that is now down to about 3. I have reset the PRAM, etc. and SOMETIMES that will work but not always. I typically have only one program running at a time, Chrome, but sometimes it's a mix between Chrome, Windows, iTunes. But my computer usage patterns have not changed since before/after updating. The only thing I can think of is that it is caused by Yosemite.
When I check my Activity Monitor, the apps with the highest CPU usage are WindowServer, kernal_task, and Chrome Helper. I have also disabled several plugins/features of Chrome to no avail.
Has anyone experienced similar issues or have any suggestions?
Thanks!

Is one of the 'etc.' a SMC reset?

My MacBook Pro battery was totally drained on Jun 11, 2013. Now the date for everything says either Today, Yesterday, or Jun 11, 2013

Hi there. You might want to do a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R while starting up holding down the keys for three chimes. If that does not help do SMC reset.http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295  Then check date and time in system preferences for set date and time automatically.

  • My macbook pro battery life is tremendously reduced after installing lion os x

I installed Lion OS X on macbook pro 13 inch- i7
I noticed that it was 100% battery full and the remaining time was less than 2 hours.
When I was using the snow leopard, it was said 6 hours which is fine.
How to solve this problem please.
    Best regards,

Hi all, thought i share some of my battery related issues i have with Lion.
As everybody already noticed, even my battery life took a deep dive into nothing really. From steady 5 hours to 2 hours !? I use my mac a lot on battery, and i can make it through the day whitout even touching a charger. But .. now that has apparently changed.
So, what i found out after installing Lion is 3 things ..
#1 "Kill your daemons" .. after i examined the Citrix fix, which i didn't had installed i had a look at what daemons i had loaded, and found a lot of google ones. So i killed those, whenever a use chrome i just have to manually check for updates. No biggie.
#2 "Battery calculation is different" Yeah, it really is .. it seems like they changed the way the calculation is done. Its more dynamic now, and it taking in consideration more about what you're doing atm on your mac. When iam writing this my battery is at 70% and i says that i have 4 hours left. When i start to surf for example it drops to 2 hours. I did the battery calc reset, altho it got a little better but not good still.
#3 "Dynamic switching" Nasty one, it seems that after i upgraded to Lion my Dynamic switching of the GPU stopped to work. All settings was according to the book, but still i had my AMD chosen all the time, which explains the furnace i got on my lap all of a sudden. So, since by default there is no way to switch the GPU i downloaded the gfxCardStatus that did the trick for me, temperature dropped radically and my battery time went up of course.
So, now iam back to almost 70% of capacity before installing Lion, and that with doing nothing other than just install Lion !. I know there is issues with Flash, and most likely there will be a fix soon from Apple and Adobe that fixes our battery issues.
Then there is the wifi issues, that everyone seems to have in different forms and shapes, so basically Lion needs a haircut and a shave.

  • OS 10.10 Yosemite and Macbook Pro battery life

    Greetings,
I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 15" that was getting 6-7 hours of battery life before installing Yosemite a few weeks ago during the initial public release.
Within the last week or so, if I am lucky, I now get maybe 3 hours before I'm down to less than 30%.
Twice this week, I have intentionally gone down to less than 5% before letting the laptop recharge for at least 12 hours before using it again, thinking maybe some sort of memory was being created; and it still drains power quickly.  And with the new formatting of the "about this Mac", I have not been able to locate how many cycles the battery has on record.
I'm not watching movies or gaming.  E-mail, Facebook, and web surfing.
If anyone has constructive ideas, I would be very appreciative.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Macbook pro won't boot after update to 10.6.8

    Hi everyone,
Yesterday I bought an used macbook pro (15 inch early 2008). When looking at it, it was in good shape and the previous owner just did a fresh install of snow leopard. I took it home and whas happy with it. In the first two hours of using it, everything was fine. After installing the update to 10.6.8 my macbook needed to be shut down.. After shutting down it started up again but the screen stayed black. I had no idea why. So I rebooted it by pressing the power button. The same problem remained, it seemed to start up (I could hear the harddrive and fan) but it didn't boot into Mac Os. After a couple of attempts, it now shutsdown immediatly after pressing the powerbutton (3 seconds after). No chime or nothing.
At first I thought this would only be a software problem, because the problem started immediatly after updating. So I put in my snow leopard dvd to boot into that, but I can't even get it to boot into the install dvd. Because it shuts down immediatly after pressing the power button. Then I started suspecting an hardware failure, which would be a very big coincidence to show up immediatly after booting up. These are the things I have tried so far, to no avail:
    - Plugging of the power cord and removing the battery, then pressing and holding the powerbutton for at least 5 sec
    - Holding the option, command, P and R keys during boot.
    - Replacing the memory
    - Replacing the hard drive
    - Unplugging the super drive
    - Starting up holding the d key
At a certain point I was hoping that It would be an harddrive or memory problem. I replaced both with examples I know for sure they are working. But still the same problem; macbook shuts down  almostimmedialty after pressing the power button.
There is no warrany anymore, and technical support would cost me 49 euros per incident.. to probably hear that the macbook is beyond repair. I feel i have just thrown away 300 euro's for an nightmare experience. Does anybody now anything to try, i'm really desperate here

After installing the update to 10.6.8
    What update was that?
So I put in my snow leopard dvd to boot into that, but I can't even get it to boot into the install dvd.
Did the previous owner also give you the discs that originally came with the computer?  Those are what you need to troubleshoot with.  You also need disc 1 to run the Apple Hardware Test.
There is no warrany anymore, and technical support would cost me 49 euros per incident..
Apple Store and AASP diagnostic testings are free.  Suggest that you take full advantage of it.  This way you can find out exactly what is wrong with your computer.  Post back here with the diagnosis and someone will post DIY repair sites.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot after update

I have a macbook pro3,1 (early 2008) that I received from someone else.  When I received it, it had os x 10.8.3 installed. Initially I tried to update it to maverick, but after it rebooted it would not boot, just continued to reboot over and over.  I then was able to boot into restore mode and do a repair on the disk. After that I was able to boot into 10.8.3.
I decided to update to 10.8.5, and received the same results as before. This time I was unable to restore with a disk repair.
I also created a bootable usb with Mavericks on it. Again, it will not boot to allow an install.
I was able to boot into safe mode, but that did not fix the installation. I tried repartitioning the hard drive and install mavericks on the new partition, but that failed also.
After looking at the logs, I see that there is a kernel panic that happens.  Everytime I boot normally, it seems to get just before the login screen before it reboots.  Below is the log.

I received the macbook from someone else without installation disks. Also, when try to do a re-install of 10.8.3 from the internet in restore mode, it tells me that the account does not match the one the purchase was made from.  I would rather not run 10.8.3 anyway if I could install mavericks.
Below is the system information for the macbook

I have tried to reset nvram as well as smc with no result.
I have also done a extended apple hardware test which found no errors.
The macbook does have a bad battery, so I have tried booting without the battery.  The results did not change.
I have searched the internet for the kernel panic error and can not find a consistent issue for macbook pros.  Some say it is a hardware problem.  Others say it is an install problem.  What does not make sense to me is if it is hardware problem, why was I able to restore it back once and get it to boot consistently.  It seems to be directly the result of updating the software.
I also read that 10.8.5 consistently had boot problems upon install, so I tried re-installing the combo update for 10.8.5
I feel like I have exhausted almost all the resources except taking it to the genius bar.
Please let me know if you can help.
    Thanks,

    bereanmh,
since your MacBook Pro didn’t originally have Mountain Lion installed at the factory, the former owner erred in leaving it on its internal disk when transferring it to you; Mountain Lion is non-transferable when sourced from the Mac App Store. The former owner should rather have provided you with its original pair of grey installation discs, which hold its original version of Mac OS X, its iLife apps, and its model-specific Apple Hardware Test. If you didn’t receive these discs, you can contact Apple directly to purchase a replacement pair. (They’re not available in Apple stores.)
That being stated, regarding the panic report above, the prime suspect is that NullCPUPowerManagement kernel extension — try uninstalling it to see if that makes a difference.

  • HT1490 battery life reduced after updating to osx mountain lion

I used to have a battery life of 7hrs+ but after updating my os to mountain lion 10.8 it has reduced to 3hrs. I've bought this macbook in august and i dont think there'll be any issue with the battery for just 3 months. I guess this has to be something related to mountain lion. Can anyone please suggest any method to increase my battery performance again...

Battery life on my 2012 mbp is also terrible, getting 2 hours out of it. They checked the battery and said its perfectly fine..

  • Mid-2010 unibody 15-inch  macbook pro battery life

The battery on my son's mid-2010 15-inch unibody macbook pro has a cycle count of 360 and shows its condition is "normal." What is the normal battery life on this computer? The reason I'm asking is that the trackpad is malfunctioning and he was told the battery could be the cause of the problem.

  • Macbook Pro won't sleep after updating to 10.4.11

    Hi,
I just updated to 10.4.11 reluctantly from 10.4.9 as whenever I do update I always have issues...I basically just went to software update last week and updated to everything I could. I've just been reading the forums and noted that updating is not always that easy...
Well basically my computer won't sleep if the lid is left open, this is IMMENSELY annoying since I often leave my desk to work on drawings, and I don't want energy being wasted like it is at the minute. Call me picky but I just want my computer to work.
I've reseted the PRAM, (option, alt, p and r), closed all applications, etc, but no luck...

The important thing for the future imho, is to always Repair Permissions before & after any update... seems to ward off most of these problems. Of course that is only good if the disk is Verified once in awhile.
Using Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later to verify or repair disks...

In fact I'd start with those 2 now, if that doesn't help you may need to reapply some updates by getting them directly from apple>downloads.

  • Macbook pro 13" running slow after update

After the iTunes update(version 10.7) and OS X Lion update that was rolled out a few weeks ago, my macbook pro 13" has been runnning slow at times. These are mainly those times when I am listening to music on itunes and browsing on safari (and no other activity). In case I am using more than these two applications, it almost certainly runs VERY slow and I am forced to restart. Without itunes, it runs fine though.
    Any help anyone?

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Macbook Pro Wont Start Up After Update

    Hey All,
I was in the middle of installing the most recent update for OSX when my computer froze completely. I shut it off by holding down the power button. Now, when I start it up, right after the apple, it goes to a screen with some script in the upper left hand corner, and a box in the middle with a picture of the power button telling me I need to restart. I've restarted it several times and it just keeps going back to that screen.
I have booted it up from the install DVD and run disk repairs and verifications, as well as checking the system profiler and utility, and nothing seems worng. I've tried starting it up by choosing to start up from the folder and it still didnt work.
If you've got any ideas, let me know. All your advice is appreciated.
    Thanks!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I meant to say that the system would have been made unstable after the semi-complete update (if it was in the middle of replacing a crucial system file).
An archive and install would replace all system files, so wouldn't hurt anything. You might have to reinstall any system-intrusive applications (Palm Hotsync springs to mind, if you have that) but it will certainly fix system corruption, if that is your issue.
After the reinstall, if you encounter a complete freeze again, then I would definitely be suspicious of hardware. Possibly the original RAM, but it could be somewhere else in the system, such as the logic board. In those cases, you would have to go back to Apple for repair. (Your Macbook Pro, that is, not you.)
