Macbook Pro "Battery not available" + kernel_task cpu usage

Hi everyone,
I have done some searching around and I see that both of these problems are reasonably common, but I don't see much discussion of them happening together.
First up, a description: My early 2011 15" mbp (240gb vertex 3 ssd and 750gb hdd in optibay, running OSX 10.7.3) became sluggish a week or so ago. I noticed unusually high cpu use by several tasks in activity monitor (usually kernel_task but also finder, itunes and others). Usually when I am epeiencing this problem I also notice that the battery icon has changed to a cross and reports "no batteries available". If I unplug the power, the machine instantly powers off and will not power back on without the power supply connected, at which point the white lights on the front of the machine flash for a few seconds before the machine boots as normal. Pressing the battery meter on the side causes all LEDs to flash. Interestingly, if I power on with the power supply connected, but then unplug it as the machine boots, the machine continues to run (although the system still fails to detect a battery). This leads me to believe that the battery itself is sound. Sometimes these problems happen independantly of each other. For example, I have noticed the resource use is high even in the brief periods where the battery is detected.
Now the twist: if I boot into Windows 7 the battery is detected as normal. If I then reboot into OSX everything works normally for a random amount of time before the problem reoccurs.
Things I have tried:
Clearing various cache's
Resetting the SMC (power button hold method is what I tried, though I got no feedback from the machine itself that anything had happened and I am unsure if this is the correct method for my model).
removing all login items for my user account
deleting finder preferences
removing all non-apple startup kexts
So what do people think? Broken SMC? If it did turn out to be this issue, is this a relatively easy fix? Will they replace the whole machine? I have 3 years of apple care, but this is my main work machine and I can't do without it for more than a couple of days. Also my nearest apple store is a train ride away.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

Since you have tried the SMC reset, I suggest that you make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be free regardless of warranty status.
Ciao.

  • Why does my Macbook Pro battery not even last me 2 hours even just browsing the internet or typing a document?

So my Macbook Pro 2011 that isn't even a year and a half old only lasts me about 2 hours of battery.  My brightness is set to only 4 notches most of the time and I mostly have google chrome and itunes or spotify open when I am using it.  I have to charge it about 2 times a day.  My old original unibody macbook lasted a longer time than this.  Today, my fans were running faster than normal and my battery drained 20 percent in less than a half hour.

  • 2011 MacBook Pro Battery Not Charging

17" 2011 MacBook Pro 2.2ghz i7 8GB RAM (upgraded OWC), 128GB SSD (in optical bay), and stock 750 GB HD. Running Lion. Battery cycle count: 15
Battery is not charging after a heavy GPU or CPU load (gaming, editing, HD movie streaming). Tried multiple SMC resets and a PRAM reset. It was charging after you let it sit for several hours. I sent it into Apple for a repair and was rejected because of the missing optical drive (that's another story), anyhow, when it came back it won't charge at all. Battery says (not charging) but running on AC power. The Magsafe light is not lit. The Magsafe port was replaced on the computer, but that didn't fix it.
Trying to avoid having to reformat and send into Apple (change it back to stock config).
    Anyone have a solution?

The battery can't be charged when the cpu is under full load because in that situation it is using power from the battery.  Shut the MBP down (not sleep) to see if it will charge in that mode.

  • Macbook Pro Extremely hot with NO cpu usage

I have a Macbook pro 15" (Mid-2010). Recently my mac is running extremly hot specially when connected to the AC power.
I'm using iStat Pro to monitor sensors, and while charging sometimes CPU reaches 101 degrees celsius. When I detach the power cord, it stays at about 80-85 degrees. My cpu usage is normal, about 1-4%. All the bottom of my mac feels hot, specially under the CPU, but the middle parts too. Fans are also working with highest speed.
Is it a known hardware problem?
Another problem which I've had around the same time, I use "Hardware Growler" to check for usb connections. When I connect a USB flash disk, sometimes it shows a lot of connections and disconnections for Keyboard, Trackpad, IR Remote and stuff. Pushing the usb around doesn't show the same symptom, so it's not a broken board or connector or something.
Have you seen a similar problem? What can I do?

I've solved my problem by resetting PRAM and SMC. I'm writing my solution here so others can try it if they have the same problems.
To reset PRAM, follow instructions in this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
and to reset SMC, follow this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
I think my problem started when I upgraded Parallels Desktop to version 7 (from version 6). I'm not sure if it was the cause, but some kernel extension in parallels could've corrupted SMC and/or PRAM.

  • Macbook Pro battery not charging suddenly

    Hi,
This morning, I was using my computer, no problem. And then I plug it in and start writing a paper. Then I saw the battery indicator as green so I pulled it out and the computer shut down. When I turned it back on I realized that it was running on charger. It said that battery condition "Replace Soon." Then I turned it off again, reset the SMC and I saw an X on battery icon, saying no battery is there. I restarted it again and now it saysreplace soon again.
What is causing this? Do I have to get the battery replaced and pay or is it apple's fault since the battery died in like 2 hours? It was fine this morning, used it on battery power for almost 3 hours.
    Any suggestions??

  • MacBook pro battery not charging anymore, Replace Now, Unibody 2011

    Hi everyone
I have a MacBook pro unibody from 2011 (usually used on power but sometimes dischared) and suddenly my battery is indicating "not charging" (is constantly to 0%) and I have the following diagnostic (in the about my mac).
If I remove the plug, the Macbook shutdowns immediately, I cannot connect it to any wifi network, and the date & clock are reset if I unplug it.
I tried the SMC reset and event the reset the NVRAM (PRAM on intels) (I am not sure about the SMC reset as there is no evident signs it has worked...).
My battery only has 120 charge cycles... and my warranty is of course finished. I have read on some forums that I maybe have to "unplug the battery" manually ? And changing the so few used battery seem to be too expensive...
Does anybody has an idea ?
    Thanks for your help

Whether you had the Applecare extended warranty or not it would not cover the battery on a 2011 model. Apple considers the battery to be a consumable item that will fail eventually. Because of that after the first year of ownership Apple does not replace the battery for free, in warranty or not.
That is not necessarily the case.  I had a battery replaced free of charge well after one year of use.  There is latitude exercised by Apple in determining if and when a battery should be replaced for free.  I suggest that there is a strong argument in the case of one with 120 cycles.  As is the case with any part, some that are produced are defective and fail prematurely, whether it is a battery, HDD, RAM chip etc.

  • MACbook Pro battery not work

My New Macbook pro i7, during update, black out, when restart, battery not working. connect with AC adapter, Mac auto starting up, and battery not charge, disconnect the AC adapter, Mac cut off.
This just new one, and we do not have store in our country. I bought this from Austrilia store in Brisbane. Please assis me how to reset this matter, as if I need sent back to store may need spend lots of money on the air tikets.

    Hi Meck PNG,
although it seems to be a firmware or software problem (just after you updated), I think it could be a problem with the charger. It could be the connector, did you clean the connector and the Magsafe Power Port (compressed air/ soft brush). If that doesn't solve the problem, visit the apple store, you still are having guarantee (I suppose).

  • Macbook Pro battery not charging after getting new charger

Dog ate through my Macbook pro's charger, so I went to the apple store and bought a new charger.  The big one, that states it is for Macbook Pros.  85w, I think?
Anyway.  The Pro runs on the charger, but its battery is not charging.
I suppose it is possible the battery just up and died, but that would be a heck of a coincidence that it happened the moment I got a new adapter.
Do all adapters labelled for macbook pros charge all macbook pro batteries?

I had recently the same issue : my battery didn't want to charge anymore. I bought a new charger. Same problem. The battery didn't want to charge (a message near the battery icon at top right of the screen : "battery is not charging").
I tried the SMC thing. Ever the same problem.
I checked I got the latest firmware for my MacBook Pro Unibody mid-2009 (with the non-removable battery). I got it.
My battery was less than 2 years old and got only 138 cycles.
And the green light on the charger was not so shining as usual.
Before going to an Apple Store, I just tried to clean my MacBook Pro power connecter.
    And... It works !
The Power connector was just dirty.
Now my battery is charging again.

  • MacBook Pro Battery Not Holding a Charge

    Hi there,
I have a MacBook Pro, purchased Sept. 2007, and the battery seems to have lost the ability to hold a charge. Even after a full charge, the battery only lasts for about 10 minutes before the system reports that it's running on reserve power. I know that similar questions have already been answered, but I would appreciate any analysis of my specific battery information per below.
    Thanks!
    Machine details:
    MacBook Pro 15 Glossy, 2.2Ghz/2GB/120GB

    Firmware Version: 102a
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0303
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 433
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 571
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 95
    Condition: Check battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 879
    Voltage (mV): 12549

Your battery does not look particularly healthy to me. I also have a MBP purchased in Sept. 2007, and it still holds a charge for hours.
By comparison, here is some of my battery information:
    Charge remaining (mAh) 6313
    Full charge capacity (mAh) 6586
    Cycle count 28
    Condition: good
After only 95 cycles, your battery health should be good. And your charge capacities look very low.
Since your Mac is less than a year old and your cycle count is well under 300, your battery should still be under warranty and you should qualify for a free replacement.
You might want to try resetting the SMC, although I don't think that will help. Also, here is a link to a battery replacement program which may not apply to your specific battery, but which does give a good description of the characteristics of a defective battery.

Unfortunately, that firmware update do not applied to

...because the SMC update is not required for the 17" or the new 15" MBPs - the update was already applied at the factory.

  • Macbook pro battery not charging since lion upgrade

I have a Macbook pro 13'' (2010 Mid) and my battery doesn't charge since last night. I installed Lion 3 days ago, and the battery was charging correctly, but since last night it doesn't charge anymore.
At first, I thought it could be the magsafe problem, but after a few hours the battery started recharging again.
    Any idea?

You're lucky, my friend, because at least you can use your MBP corded.
Mine doesn't work even with MagSafe plugged. I have an almost dead MB with less than 30% battery... it's like "the final countdown" ...
What the h... is Apple waiting for to release any solution or at least talk about this officially ?
    Grrr...
This didn't happen to me since I bought my first iBook G3 computer and its Sony optical drive was working poorly for months !!  Finally, Apple "decided" to release a new firmware, just when I had bought an external recorder...
    This issue also stinks...

  • MacBook Pro Battery Not Lasting More that 4 Hours

Hello! I just got my new MacBook Pro and I have calibrated the battery. I have noticed that the battery meter is terribly inaccurate and jumps around from 1 hour to 6 hours of estimated lasting time! I usually only get 3 and a half to 4 hours and this is with the keyboard backlight and the display backlight on its lowest setting and using the integrated graphics! I am doing nothing more that some word processing and internet browsing. On the Apple Tech Specs it states that one could easily get 5 hours and thats with the backlighting on the mid point! I am wondering if I have a defective battery. When running coconut battery it used to say my battery had 98% of its charge and that was with 3 charge cycles! Now after calibrating it, it states it has 100% however what is odd to me is that it says it has 4648mAh when the batters compactly is only 4000mAh.
    Thanks for any help!

under the preferences of the coconut battery prog. you can change the mAh settings to the desired mAh.

Lyssa, not doing much, surfing the web and looking at word documents. Checked my activity monitor, nothing clogging the CPU, 70%+ idle most of the time... Just looked at other posts & people are saying they started experiencing this after installing SL. I just remembered that I have also installed my SL from a CD because I did a time machine backup our of the box & that reverted my OS back to Leopard. It's weird, it looks like there's some general issue with something here. Even if you are heavily using your CPU etc., it should still last 5+ hours at the very least, given that the advertised time is 7+ with surfing the net on wireless. My early 2008 MBP lasted for 3+ hours, and in this one the battery capacity is supposed to be 2x bigger...

  • Late 2011 Macbook Pro loud fan at 30% cpu usage...

Im new to to MBP (about 2 a month and half now...) and its whisper quiet when idle or in the first hour ive started using it... but after writing papers or surfing for a few hours the fan kicks on and its surprisingly loud!  My CPU isnt above 30%, and the case even gets pretty hot.  Yesterday I swear it almost burned my lap within an hour of use it was so hot on the bottom!
Ive just never heard of the fan getting this loud or complaints about a hot case from fellow users. So im wondering if this is normal...
Ps. the fan doesnt sound like its rubbing or performing poorly, just at a very high speed.  My old custom desktop pc had 8 x 80mm case fans and at time this is almost about the same volume!

Mac Notebooks are not meant to be used on your lap.  They need to be placed on a flat surface such as a desk to allow for proper ventilation.  Also, define "hot"  add the iStat widget to your dashboard and report back with what the temps are.  Also, MBP's are known to run hot..
