MacBook Pro beach ball of death after login
Hello. I have a MacBook pro 13 inch intel core i5that runs os x lion 10.7.1 that is 3 months old. I downloaded a game called prototype in partitions which was 9 Gita bites. After I downloaded it, I tried to concat the partitions with split and concat. However, when I opened the app, everything became laggy and every second a beachballl would pop out. I impatiently held down the power button and turned it on agAin. After a few minutes of waiting, the login screen pops up and I log in successfully. However, as soon as I click macintosh HD a beach ball comes out that spins for at least an hour not exaggerating. Then if I move my cursor a bit, another beach ball comes out. I am in the point that I am starting to think if I should change to windows. I also continuously rebooted too. But same problem....PLEASE HELP TT TT
It is a good idea to repair permissions after you download software.

Macbook pro, beach ball of death
I have a MacBook Pro, OS10.7.5, 2.2Ghz, Intel Core, 4Gb memory. It's annoyingly slow sometimes and the "beach ball" of death apperas regardless of the program I use. It sometimes appears even if I am in Finder and try to open a folder. After about 6 sec, the ball disappears, and I can operate the software. Periodically it comes back, I wait...then go back to using the laptop. Is it the OS causing it? My hardware? My drives? My memory? It's soooo annoying because I have to wait until it disappers so I can continue working. Any suggestions? Much appreciated.
I am having the same issue as above stated. Mac book pro 10.7.5 2GHz i7 4GB 1333 DDR3
The machine is freezing up perodically. Force qui will show Google Chrome as not responding. Trying to quit Chrome does nothing, and the force quit window sits there until there is an error. The error stats the a connection to a windows station had been interrupted and timed out.
The machine is running simultanious RDP sessions into two different Windows servers in addition to that one of the servers is given permission to access the local drive soreport save time is decreased. I followed instructions above and sadly was not lucky enough to find pacesupport. Here is a copy of the report from Etre Check:

Late 2010 17-inch MacBook Pro beach ball freeze
Hi all, this is my second to last resort (last is sending in for repair xD). Well anyways, hope that you guys can help me solve this problem so I won't have to go there .
Here's the story:
I recently purchased a custom, late 2010 17-inch MacBook Pro with these apple upgrades:
-2.8ghz intel i7
-anti-glare screen
After doing some research, I found out that the memory and harddrive upgrades from aren't any special. So, I decided to do these upgrades myself since it is cheaper. These are the components that I have installed:
-Corsair CM3X8GSDKIT1066 G (2x4gb 1066 ddr3 memory)- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233081
-Corsair P128 CMFSSD-128GBG2D (128gb ssd)- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233087
I purchased both of these items from newegg. The solid state drive came off of my old laptop, which I installed into about 6 month ago.
So, once my MacBook arrived, I didn't even turn it on. i went straight into unscrewing the back and installing the components. The process went smoothly and I booted up the machine afterwards. Everything looked fine at first, but the installation failed about midway through (due to failure to copy necessary files). But I tried and tried again and after about the 25th time (yes I know, it took the whole day), it finally worked. The reason for my persistency is because everytime it would fail, it would fail at different spots of the installation, so I figured that eventually I will get lucky. So I unchecked as many items as possible under the "what to install" list and it finally went through after many tries.
Now, with OSX running, the laptop would constantly freeze with the beach ball of doom.
Here is my thought process of what could be wrong (from most likely to least likely)
-installed ram is defect
-apple osx cd is defect
-compatibility issues with solid state drive (the drive must be fine since it worked in my old laptop for 6 months)
Once I installed OSX, I quickly went through the process of elimination to solve my problem:
-ran 15 hours of memtestosx with zero errors -> ram is fine
-since osx is running without a cd now, not the cd
-very unlikly that there are compatibility issues with harddrive
I did a TON of googling and found that many people have the same problem as me, but mostly on much older models (in which apple fixed through software/firmware updates) and also flash problems. I tried to installed these updates but OSX said that my system does not require them. So, I installed a beta version of flash and everything was much better, the computer started up 3 times faster and it did not freeze for a while. Hoever, after a couple hours of on-off use, it froze again . Knowing that it must be flash-related now, I uninstalled flash all-together. However, the problem still remains.
Here is a more detailed description of when this freezing occurs:
-mostly during safari operations such as loading a webpage or closing the browser
-it froze a couple of times while opening things such as the applications folder from the bottom dock or opening the "about this mac" window.
-before the flash beta update, it would freeze in the middle of a flash video playback from internet (like youtube). But after update, this freezing stopped occuring (did an hour of testing) and I actually got to the point where if I am loading a page in safari and it "looks" like it is freezing, I could close safari before my system goes into complete melt-down (once beachball starts spinning, all hope is gone)
Now, I am thinking that it might still be the OSX cd. Even though the installation was successful, it might have copied corrupt files that are freezing the laptop. I have order a replacement cd from apple and it should arrive within a couple of days. However, I still have big doubts on this being the actual solution.
I know that since this is a very recent model, it is hard for many people to have come across such problems yet (especially with my specific specifications). However, if anyone has an idea, or a past solution that is fits the description, any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for readingHi Dale,
Thanks for the replies. No, when I powered up the Mac, I put the OSX cd in first thing and press and held "c" until it started booting off the cd. Then I proceeded on reformatting the drive and etc.
I read all of that forum post. I reseted the PRAM, still freezes.
The new OSX cd came today, same thing happened, although it only took me 2 tries to install OSX. However, it would still freeze afterwards.
I very much realize that it could be a ram problem and how Corsair doesn't work so well with apple. However, Corsair has yet to let me down, that's why I chose it over crucial when I purchasing the ram. I did a lot of research and it seemed that as long as the ram meets spec, Macs will take it. And after 15 hours of memtestosx testing, I highly doubt that it is the ram.
However, I think I might have found the solution. I finally got the time to free up one of my external hard drives and installed OSX onto it to test the hard drive. I checked everything for the optional installs (except rosetta and the old quicktime) to further confirm my theory. After a very long install, it completed successfully! the odds of that happening on the first try using the old system is quite low (due to my countless install attempts with the old system and it failing with only half of the load of my new install).
And since then (probably around 3 hours of usage), my MacBook has not encountered a beach ball of death yet (well, sort of. it did it once when I was restarting, but I think that was due to the old drive because it is still plugged in and it was probably trying to read it while it was frozen in the closing phase of a shutdown). Anyhow, I think a few hours of usage will definitely confirm my theory and hopefully a ssd firmware update will solve my problem so I won't have to invest on a new ssd xD.
Ill update once I have made any progress -
New Macbook Pro Beach Ball Lag
Just got the laptop 2 weeks ago, and everything is updated to latest fixes and patches. One big problem I'm having is the constant beach ball showing while during simple things like opening a regular website, or chatting on adium. It will just occasionally start to occur and last for 10-20 seconds. I do not think its a heat issue since its running at 95 degrees. I originally thought it was xmarks, but I removed that. Currently I only have adium running, text expander, grabup.
Is this a known problem, or if anyone else has any suggestions?

Message was edited by: xtacI've been having the exact same problem since I got my laptop ten days ago. It's bugging the **** out of me. Every ten minutes: iTunes stops playing, beach ball of death, then just snaps back to normal as if nothing happened. I'm confident it's not the hard drive locking up because nothing like this happened on my old macbook pro, and it doesn't require any sudden movements to occur. I'm hesitant to take it to the genius bar because I can't easily recreate the scenario. I'm more than happy to provide any data from activity monitor to help the guys reading this forum that are obviously far smarter than me figure out the problem
Edit: Just happened again, took some shots immediately after

"beach-ball of death" after updates
My woeful story.
My macbook pro kept on giving me the beach-ball of death crash shortly after doing some updates so I ended up restoring the whole hard-drive from my time machine backup. No improvement so I tried another backup from my time machine - still no improvement.
I was convinced it was a hardware problem, however, I though I would try a fresh OSX install from the install disc just to rule out software. This fixed the problem and I spent the next 48 hours reinstalling everything manually.
Everything was going fine until last night when I ran the final mac update and installed Java 4, Safari and an HP printer update. The weird thing was that 2 separate check boxes came up for Java 4 that were exactly the same so I unchecked on of them.
Anyhow upon restart the computer was giving me the same kind of error except this time it crashed when I attempted to use any of the icons/dropdown menus in the tool bar at the top or anytime I tried to right click to use a menu. If I left these alone it would be fine.
I then downloaded the "stand alone" installers for Java and safari on my other computer. When I tried to instal them on my macbook pro I would get to the install screen but the computer would crash when I pressed the install button.
I tried re-booting in safe mode and everything seems to work fine, however, when I try to re-install the "stand-alone" updates nothing happens.
I have done everything I can think of including the usual repair permissions etc. but can't fix it.
Luckily I had backed it up on my time machine before the last update so I am attempting to reinstall again to a point that I know works okay.
Thanks for any helpStart with http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html

Mail Plagued by Spinning Beach Ball of Death After 10.6 Upgrade...
Hello,
After the upgrade to Mac 10.6, Mail is plagued by the spinning beach ball of death. I did get the confirmation that the Mail database had been successfully rebuilt and the window looks fine for a few seconds before the program stalls. I have tried removing the Preferences and Envelope Index files before a restart without any change. Activity Monitor shows Mail eating up just shy of 100% CPU and the infamous "Not Responding" phrase.
Any clues from here?

New MacBook Pro beach balling after transfering account.
Hi,
My new 15" MacBook Pro (non retina) arrived at work this morning. I have an '09 MacPro at home and the first thing I wanted to do was migrate my account from that to the new MacBook. I keep a recent Time Machine back up disk in my locker at work and the MBP gave me the option of transfering an account from that. So I connected them together via usb and left it running whilst I got on with a few jobs and then had lunch.
I came back from lunch about half an hour ago and the MBP says "Thank You, Your Mac is set up and ready to use." with a button beneath to click for "Start using your Mac". So I click on the button and I get the spinning beach ball. I still have the spinning beach ball half an hour later and the screen hasn't changed.
Any ideas what's going on? Should I force shut down or leave it?
Regards,
Dave.Did the force shut down and restarted. Everything seems to be ok, fingers crossed....

Macbook Pro Beach Ball Problems
I have a '08 MBP that has the spinning beach ball showing up in all the apps during use and everything runs slower.
Web pages take 5-10 seconds to load.
Lightroom photos take 5-10 seconds to load. Commands and mouse selections take 4-5 seconds to respond.
It slows down even more with an external monitor being used.
The fan runs high 85% of the time.
Hard drive was replaced with an SSD about 2 years ago, which helped calm HD noise.
The HD has 15.5 GB left right now, but the beach ball problem has been there even with half the HD full.
Problem has been going on for a couple of years, but I've managed around it.
This issue occurs even with only 1 app running. For instance, I'll shut all apps except one application, and it still drags, whether that one app be Safari or LR.
I realize the MBP is older, but it used to be very responsive with the same apps. Never used to see the beach ball during app usage, only at startup of app if anytime.
I believe the RAM is maxed out for what this machine can handle at 4GB, but again, the system didn't slow down before.
I believe the problem may be some processes running in the background that are dragging down everything, but not sure what to look for.
Any advice any fixes are greatly appreciated.

Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

10.6.6 is making my Late 2008 MacBook Pro Beach Ball more than usual?
For much of the day, my MacBook Pro, late 2008, was working flawlessly.
Then, I upgraded to 10.6.6.
After that, I repaired permissions. For the first time ever, there were several permissions that were repaired.
I ran repair permissions again, and all was good.
Except now, opening programs like Firefox, Outlook 2011, or even certain folders, will cause a beach ball lag of a few seconds.
This never happened before.
It happens more so after a fresh restart and tends to go away after some computer usage.
Does anyone have any insight on what could be causing this?
Thank you!Unfortunately, i have the same problem in my macbook pro late 2009. I saw that downgrading the EFI system to 1.6 (actually is 1.7) solves the problem for a lot of MBPs but for me such was not the solution. I face every day the same problem and i am worried because any solution is working. Maybe downgrade could work for you.

Beach ball of death after Mountain Lion install
I never saw the beach ball until after I installed Mountain Lion. After this started, I installed an VirusBarrier X6, which helped clean up the machine. I also ran the First Aid utility, to no avail. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Arthur, you are my new hero! There is a lot of info on the link you sent. Most of the things regarding the disk I already did ... to no avail. But ... just now I did reset the PRAM and SMC ... and no more beach balls!!! I've only been up and running for 15 minutes since the reset, but so far so good!
Anyone else having the same problem: resetting your PRAM and SMC may be the answer!!! -
Spinning beach ball of death after crash with fans running full speed
I recently put my machine to sleep - came in the next morning to find it running all fans at full speed and frozen. Did a hard reset (power button in for 5 seconds waited 15 secs and then power on. It rebooted after a long re-boot period. Since then it has slowed down. Many apps take an age to open. Many freeze and there is the infamous SBoD. I have rebuilt permissions, installed 10.5.8 combo, done a permission repair from a separate firewire disk, run onyx - which at time never ends and has to be aborted. Activity monitor shows no exceptional activity when the SBoD is running. I had significant issues until last December when i did a clean rebuild and installation of leopard and put all essential software in from clean install disks - all in all had a pristine machine which was working perfectly until the week before last when the full fan and freeze crash occurred. I notice that it speeded up after the 10.5.8 combo install and permission rebuild from external disk but gradually slows down and gets increasingly unstable requiring forced reboots more and more often. I have no hacks or other background processes other than Virus Barrier 6 which ran perfectly before the crash.
As expected after running well at about 11:40 Mail slowed down and the SBoD started.

MacBook Pro, 10.6.3 hangs after login with external monitor
Howdy:
This is a weird one and if this isn't the correct forum, please let me know.
I have a two year old MBP that I use 99% of the time with a 30" Apple monitor. It has always worked well. Now, if it is attached to the monitor and I log in, the machine just hangs after I put in the password. It does this also in the troubleshooting "blank" account I have. If I shut the machine down and detach the monitor and external drives, it logs me in nicely. (I'm using it now)
I have restarted from the 10.6 install disk and repaired permissions twice. I have reloaded 10.6 and then did the updatede to 10.6.3. I have used Disk Utility and TechToolPro to repair everything and both say all is okay. Still the problem persists. However, when I reloaded 10.6 and updated it, it logged me in with the monitor once and then when I logged out to restart it, it stopped again.
Could it be a problem with 10.6.3 and external monitors? I don't think so as it worked for a while with it before this started.
The only connection I can find is the monitor.
Does anyone have any clue what is going wrong and what I might do to fix it? ThanksI need to hang my head in shame. The solution, once found was simple and took only seconds and it was merely a software conflict. I should have gotten that one myself but didn't, because, believe it or not, I didn't think the software was running and I simply forgot about it to begin with.
It turns out, I had Intego Software's Virus Barrier on my computer and it was running. I knew I had it, but thought I had disabled it because it was forever throwing a hissy fit every time my Apple TV checked in. Last week, I updated it without thinking. Apparently, that re-enabled it and it was rejecting the internal process change from the machine-wide log-in screen to the account log-in screen.
The point is I should have remembered that I had updated it and I didn't. If I had recalled the change, I would have zeroed in on that before I spent hours at the Genius Bar, befuddling everyone. On the other hand, it was nice to take my 30" monitor for a nice outing. -
My MacBook Pro shuts down almost immediately after login.
I just installed my banks security software, Rapport, and an Adobe flash update. Does anyone know why it's shutting down, and have any hints on how to solve the problem please?
I don't even get time to see what programs might be running. Is there a way to start up in safe mode.nigelneedsanswers,
yes, there’s a way to start in Safe mode. -
I have no idea why this is happening. I normally use Word, Excel, Google Chrome and sometimes Photoshop when using my computer and then one day it started getting super slow. This is my etrecheck.
Computer running slow all of the sudden. Getting spinning beach ball of death through all applications all the time. Computer losing charge while not plugged in.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The beachball is literally every other minute. I tried to take the time to it's most basic second and it was 4:01:04 - I am currently backpacking in Laos with my bf and we are travel writers/photographers and he is helping me get this info.
We didn't know what anonymyze meant but we tried to make sure you couldn't see my name. So far the spinning beach ball has occurred 4 times in just writing these 4 lines.
We tried to make sure we didn't overwhelm you with the 4000 lines or more but just did a couple days worth of text. Thanks again for your time.

I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!
