Macbook Pro Beeping?

I just purchased my macbook pro 15" yesterday! On the first day I owned it, it started doing a weird beeping thing.
At first I thought it was when the drive was hot or something. But that doesn't seem to be the case.
First there is a short clicking sound and then there is a single beep from the top right of the computer. It is definitely not coming from the speaker. Was I sold a defective computer?

It's a very odd problem.
One hour after I unboxed my Macbook Pro, the screen turned gray and told me to shut down my computer. At first, I thought it was a graphics issue because it stopped doing so after I downloaded all the latest updates.
Upon upgrading to Snow Leopard last week, I began to notice similar problems but didn't put much though into it. After 2 nights ago, my laptop refused to turn on. Instead, I was stuck with 9 beeps.
So... after doing some research, I was told that there is a problem with my RAM. I begged to differ! Although, I have installed new RAM, the problem reared itself with the stock RAM Apple sent me. Then I read somewhere that I should try to boot up with one RAM instead of 2 to see which socket is malfunctioned. Upon doing so, I noticed that when there is RAM in the top socket, the computer does not boot up at all and just beeps.
I'm not sure if this could be fixed via Firmware Update as it seems it is a hardware issue. Does anyone think Apple will replace my laptop on the spot or will they have to send it in and etc.?

Hmm. The problem still may be the RAM - Apple buys the RAM it puts in its machines from third-party vendors (usually Hynix) so it could be a RAM problem.
There are a couple of things that you can do yourself before taking your machine into an Apple Store or an AASP... download and run an application named Rember that will run a RAM test for you - let it run for a couple of hours or even overnight. If it turns out that your RAM is faulty, Rember will let you know. If it is faulty, then you have a couple of options - replace the RAM yourself or (particularly if you're under warranty still) take the machine to an Apple Store or AASP and have them replace the RAM.
If Rember finds no fault with the RAM, then you'll need to take it into an Apple Store/AASP and get a free diagnosis on the machine. Three beeps do usually indicate faulty RAM, but if it tests good with Rember you likely have another problem - it could be something as simple as the RAM, somehow, not seated correctly or signs of another hardware problem.
Run Rember first... call back with results.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • My MacBook Pro beeped when I started up. Never happened before. I want to get it looked at, but I'm living in Antalya, Turkey right now. I will be in Athens, Greece until January 1st-are there any Apple stores in Athens? Please help. Thank you.

I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro and it started to beep for the first time when I started up today. I think it was 3 continuous beeps then a pause. It sounded like an alarm and totally freaked me out. Then I pressed the on/off button for about 5 seconds and it restarted. I was able to get online, but then I had trouble with the trackpad, which is okay now. I have AppleCare and want to take it to an Apple Store, but I'm currently residing in Antalya, Turkey. I will be in Athens, Greece until January 1st. Are there any Apple Stores in Athens, Greece that I can take it to or Antalya, Turkey???  Thank you.

  • MacBook Pro beeps and briefly freezes in predictable pattern

    I have an early 2011, 15" MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.8.
Recently, it's been making fairly quiet but high-pitched beeping noises, not sporadic, but in a regular pattern. When this beeping occurs, whatever I'm using briefly freezes: If I'm using Chrome, the next page will load only after the beeping stops. If I'm using VLC, the video freezes typically for 10 seconds; once the beeping stops, the video turns gray for a second before continuing normally. If I'm using iTunes, the audio similarly freezes. I've also noticed these hitches occur about once an hour.
I don't know what caused this. A week or so ago I moved out of my apartment. There it was fine, and now it's like this. To my recollection, nothing else major has happened. I'm very delicate with my laptop, so I'm sure I didn't bang it up or anything.
If you're curious about console messages during the hitches:
VLC says:           main input error: ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR is called too late (jitter of 9408 ms ignored)
Chrome says:      The GPU process hung. Terminating after 10000 ms.
    Any ideas?
P.S. More about the beeping noise: It's the kind of noise a healthy computer makes during run-of-the-mill processes, only in a peculiar, regular pattern. I may be confusing beeping for subtle clicking, by the way.

  • Macbook Pro beeps on close lid -Bootcamp XP

Recently my Macbook Pro began beeping (like a system beep) a solid tone whenever i close the lid in windows xp, running under bootcamp. I have no clue how to fix it or why its doing it. The computer is of course trying to go to sleep when the lid is closed. It only lasts a couple of seconds most of the time, but when windows takes a little while to sleep it will continue producing a tone until the computer is asleep...
    Any ideas?

    Try resetting your SMC.

  • Macbook Pro Beeping Sound

Hey, i just recently updated my Macbook Pro mid 2009 from 2gb Ram to 4Gb
    (original came with 2 1Gb Ram , so i Bought 1 4gb Ram (KingstonDDR3 4GB  PC3 10600 Pin SODIMM)
and at the time I put it ony the macbook and turning it on, it started making 3 beeping noise, support told me it is because i didn't place the ram correctly, but I tried again and nothing, the beeping noise again. So i tried putting the old one; (the 1GB) and it started up and worked perfectly, and changed again to the 4gb and it didn't work.
Why is that? What should I do?

  • 2008 macbook pro beeps after installing new hard drive

I install a new hard drive in a 2008 macbook pro and it just beeps. three quick beeps repeatedly. I cloned the new drive from my 2011 macbook pro
Is anybody experience this same problem? please help
    thank you

You can't reliably use the clone from one Mac on another Mac of a different vintage.  Boot off an external hard drive after installing the operating system from Apple or the original discs on the external hard drive, and use the migration assistent to import data from the internal hard drive.  You'll want to make sure the copy on the external hard drive does not excede the internal hard drive capacity by more than 85% before cloning and overwriting its contents.

  • Why is my macbook pro beeping continuously suddenly?

Hey everyone! Got my macbook pro in 2010 February.
    It's a 13 inch 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
    8GB memory.
    NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Been dropped a couple of times and done a bit of gaming on it. Worked just fine after being dropped (that was like 2 years back anyway, if there's any serious damage it should have shown then)
It just started beeping (a long, continuous, monotonal beep) a couple of weeks ago. I thought it overheated, so I just turned it off.
I shut it down and restarted it, it was fine for awhile (couple of days).
Today it started beeping again. It's really annoying. There are no answers online about it.
To clarify, it is NOT a 3 beep or 5 beep etc
Just ONE, LONG BEEP. Still ringing.
then suddenly it goes like random beeping
Then back the the continuous long drawn out one.
    It's driving me crazy.
It can't be storage problem. Out of the 499.25GB, I have 310.06GB unused.
I want to know if anyone else has this problem, what the beeping means, and how I can fix this without losing any memory/stuff saved in here.
Please note I am totally noob at all this stuff. I have my finals in a couple of days, and I can't afford to lose any work.
Thanks so much for any help, gladly appreciated.

Try resetting your PRAM. If that doesn't work, you may need to get it looked at. It could be a power supply or hard drive issue.

  • 13" Macbook Pro Beeps Black Screen on Startup

    Hi all,
My 2 month old 13" Macbook pro won't startup and I get a series of beeps and optical disc noise at start-up.
My only modification to the machine is the addition of an intel X25 SSD drive that I have had installed since day 2 and two 2GB sticks of ram with no problems whatsoever.
Yesterday, I ran the battery down all the way until the machine turned itself off (I guess it went to sleep or some hibernation mode).
I plugged the MPB in and charged it over night. Woke up this morning and the charge light showed green.
I tried turning it on and all I got were some beeps (longish) and the optical drive sounds like it is making some noise, but there is no disk in the drive. The beeps/optical drive noise seem to just cycle on and off and the machine never boots up.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the replies. I'm on vacation at the moment and don't have the proper tools to remove the aluminum cover to get at the RAM.
Upon startup I hear a beep folowed by the optical (DVD) drive making some noise as if it wants to read a DVD but there is nothing in the drive. Then I get another beep followed by the optical drive noise. This happens cyclically like this indefinitely. I am using the laptop to charge my iphone. While it's beeping/cd drive is making noise I can still charge my iphone, so I think the battery is ok.
    Thanks again for you help!

  • Macbook pro beeps multiple times but will not start. Unit is two years old.

two year old MacBook Pro won't start. Beeps multiple times and black screen.

On startup, are you hearing three beeps, then a pause, and repeating three beeps?
If so, that indicates a problem with loose or bad RAM sticks.

  • MacBook Pro Beeps Three Times on Start-Up

I recently got a used MacBook Pro from my uncle, so I would have a laptop for college. When I start it up (with a new Snow Leopard install disc), it beeps three times. I've looked this up to determine it's an issue with the RAM, so I bought a new 8GB stick from OWC, and installed it. It is still beeping three times on start-up.
When I boot without the start-up disc I just get a flashing folder with a question mark in it (no OS found, that's why I need the install disc).
It no longer has a service contract (from early 2011).
Help on why this thing is beeping at me would be appreciated.

What kind of RAM is in the second memory chip slot?
Usually these are sets of two, and matching is best.
•Maximum Memory    16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    •Memory Slots    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Rarely would anyone install only one RAM chip, and
when a computer such as yours can use say, 8GB a
credible path to 8-GB would be two 4-GB/matching.
Or if you had a good 2 or 4 GB chip, it could occupy
the second slot for a slightly uneven workable match.
{What were the two RAM chips removed from the MB/Pro?
    ...At this point, I'd venture to guess they probably are OK.}
And there can be an issue even with RAM of the same
spec numbers, some of them for a PC or iMac will not
do well in an Apple portable, though of similar spec.
However I get the impression there is a hardware failure
at some other point, to include a bad hard disk drive..
A diagnostic is recommended since most usual startup
sequences do not work; so troubleshooting isn't possible
in the sense that most users would be able to at home.
Also a retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should be of a
newer version than the one your MacBook Pro shipped
with, since the original system discs would have been
one of two Snow Leopard versions. However being
unable to boot from the DVD and have it run the Mac
the issue may be a logic board failure, if not RAM.
    •Original OS    Mac OS X 10.6.6 (10J3210)
    •Later OS    Mac OS X 10.6.7 (10J4139)
    {specs from http://mactracker.ca database}
Anyway, perhaps another volunteer contributor has
ideas that may work, so I have to go about other
obligations and have to go offline now.
PS: I just noticed your other post, and Recovery
could be helpful, but may rely on the Apple ID
of the previous owner if an older OS X 10.7 or
later was installed & still present in the MB/Pro.
Usually a purchased code was involved in a
new install of Lion, via the Mac App Store while
MacBook, etc was running in SL OS X10.6.8...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • New Macbook Pro beeping on startup + showing progress bar

    Hi;
Yesterday I bought my new 13inch MacBook Pro. When I came to turn it on this morning, it first made a beep sound; then it showed the Apple logo with a progress bar under it. The bar made no progress, suddenly it rebooted again but without making any sound, and the Apple logo re-showed again with the bar. This happeded 3 times before the Mac booted.
    Any ideas?
Please help, I am new to Mac, and I'm Lovin' It.
    Thank you.

It is true; the past day I had updated my software and I turned it off. This all started happening the next day. I understand that it might be updating the EFI firmware, I remember I did install it; but the problem is that it happened twice in a row (I shut down the computer and re-turned it on again) and the same things happened. But it never happened again. I just wanted to know that my new MB is OK. (I am new to Mac and not familiar with MB beeping at startup, is it normal?).
    Thank you.
If the issue got fixed that means that the MacBook was updating its EFI. The "bong" sound is normal at start up, however the "beep" sound will be heard only when the EFI is update or has a problem.

  • MacBook Pro beeps on power up

I used my macbook last night and when I was finished put it on the charger and closed the lid. This morning when I woke up and opened it the display was black and it began beeping. The beeping had no pauses and was continuous, about every 7 seconds or so. The macbook would click every once in a while because I dropped it about a month or two ago, so could this be it for my mac? I probably need to replace the hard drive?
