MacBook Pro: Blank Screen and Random Crashes After Yosemite Update

Hello All!
So I'm living with the regret of updating my MacBook Pro to Yosemite. My MacBook Pro is an early 2011 version, and ever since I updated it - I literally cannot turn off the computer because when I go to turn it on, the screen is completely black. Performing the flashlight trick, the computer eventually lights up, on average three minutes later. However, that's not the only issues I have been having. My computer constantly loses WiFi signal and is crashing every two hours or so. It's not even that I have a lot of programs running; I literally only have Chrome running... So I'm not sure what I should do now. Is it even because of the Yosemite update?! Help please?!

Nothing obvious here, but better get rid of that remnant of CleanMyMac2. Also check if all software with kernel extensions, launch agents and launch daemons is still necessary and up to date (if not uninstall or update).

In any particular app, or all of them?

  • Macbook Pro heating up and draining battery after yosemite upgrade.

On Friday, I upgraded to Yosemite and I really like it. However my computer keeps heating up very quickly when doing simple tasks and the battery also drains. About 1% every 2 minutes when on Safari and having Pages open in the background. What can I do to slow down the battery drain. Before, on Mavericks I could get a whole day on Safari but now about half a day.

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2012 not starting up after Yosemite Update

I'm using a MacBook Pro mid 2012 model , enrolled into Yosemite Public Beta Program ...
After the official public launch , app store suggested that i rather update from beta 5 to beta 6 , as downloading extra 5 gig of OS data seemed unnecessary for me , I just updated from the app store.
Post the update , after shutting down my MacBook , I tried starting it up after 8 hours , it failed to respond to any of my prompts .
    Keyboard not responding
    Power Button not responding
Li-Po Battery indicator alone works ,
When plugged MagSafe , it indicates charging .
The Sleep Indicator (in the front - that of hard disk drive ) blinks occasionally.
Later, when i tried powering up with MagSafe , It booted luckily , after some 20 hours of work , i shut the system down ,
Again when i tried booting up  , it failed .
The problem persists since 3 days.
I tried booting up in Safe Mode - No result
Tried Verbose Booting up - No result
Cleared NV RAM - No result
Cleared SMC as Apple instructed for Intel Based MacBooks - No result.
Removed Battery and kept aside for a while , After an hour tried powering up , It booted up , Went till Apple Logo , The loading bar was some 45%
Then it started to go down with a black screen ,
    It never starts up again.
After regular intervals of removing and installing battery , it starts up to white screen and goes off.
I am really worried and desperate now.
I am not sure whether my HDD is dead or my Battery is dead  or my Logic board is dead or my Yosemite Install was not right ?
After hours of online research , nothing seems to be helpful .
People at Apple Care (Premium ReSeller , India) are so irresponsible in attending the issue ,
They say its helpless without even doing some basic troubleshoot.
Where would it have went wrong and What am i supposed to do now ?
    PLEASE HELP !!

    darkrider92,
I have the same model MacBook Pro as the one that you got from your mom. Were you able to install the 10.6.8 update successfully onto the factory drive? Were you using the factory RAM when you tried to install the 10.6.8 update on the SSD?
Have you checked  the Web site of the SSD’s manufacturer, to see if there’s a firmware update available for the SSD?
You can download the 10.6.8 update outside of Software Update from Apple here; in case you need to try to install this update several times, running it from your local disk would be more convenient than waiting for it to download again.

  • Macbook pro (retina) keyboard backlight not working after Yosemite update

    Help,
My keyboard backlight stopped working when I upgraded my Macbook pro (retina) from Mavericks to Yosemite. Nothing in System Preferences -> Keyboard makes a change. This is a feature I use a lot. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

  • MacBook Pro Blank Screen (Built - in & External) - continued

This thread is a continuation of [MacBook Pro Blank Screen (Built - in & External)|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1478474]. The thread was getting too long and some browsers were timing out.
    Thank you,
    Apple Discussions Staff

I brought mine into the Apple Store last night. I had not left it for service last time as I had not cleared it of some confidential client data. This time, I encountered a much more knowledgeable Genius who seemed to have heard of the Nvidia problem.
So, my MBPro is on its way to the depot. It will apparently be $310 total, flat fee, supposedly ready within a week.
I do expect Apple will do the right thing eventually and extend warranties for the defective Nvidia subsystem. However, I can't wait until they do. I need my Macbook Pro to be functional.
    Again, my strong advice...
*At the first hint you are getting this problem, turn on screen sharing.*
If you have this specific Nvidia problem, you will still be able to access the machine remotely, which can be incredibly valuable in terms of saving data before you send it for repair. When you hand it over, you will initial a statement saying you have backed up your data and Apple is not responsible if the machine is wiped during repairs. Set up screen sharing so you can operate the machine during the Nvidia failure.

  • Macbook pro as [MacBook Pro Blank Screen ] with voided Warranty ?

I have the same issue as told in this post.
MacBook Pro Blank Screen (Built - in & External)
However, I have manually replace my HDD to another. Since my HDD die before and want a bigger one. And I think my warranty have voided.
So does it include in the replacement program of the logic board with free of charge ?
Will apple help me do the replacement if I'm able to charge that fee even my warrany voided ?

It really doesn't make a bit of difference whether someone else had an experience similar to yours. It's still up to AppleCare to deal with it.
But you can certainly waste your time here for whatever you think you'll find. Good luck.

  • Mac mail CRASHING after Yosemite update 10.10.3

mac mail CRASHING after Yosemite update 10.10.3
The program is completely unusable and crashed after update.
Computer is less than 1 month old and can't run a basic mail program
I REALLY HOPE APPLE FIXES THIS BUG ASAP
Without fix I will return the computer

    True,
I also have AppleCare, but unfortunately, after calling them they can't determine what is creating the problem either.
Other forums have shown other troubleshooting steps which didn't solve my problem, but may help others:
Mail app keeps crashing after Yosemite update
Mail crashing after upgrading to 10.10.3
Lets cross our fingers that 10.10.4 will be out shortly to fix this

  • Premiere cs6 continues to offset screen and freeze/crash after only seconds.

When opening premiere the issue sometimes happens instantly, or other times it happens after the first thing I click.
The Issue freezes the laptop and makes my laptop screen offset similar to the "offset" effect, where my screen is pushed to the left. and the left side of the screen is pushed off onto the right side of my screen.
I unfortunately have updated to OS X Yosemite and am currently running 10.10.1 on. Up to this point premiere has been running fine.
It started one day while I was in the middle of editing a video and then all of the sudden my screen went black... my laptop instantly shut off.
Since then, Premiere Pro CS6 has been completely unusable.
I was able to run premiere in safe boot mode, however my laptop runs far too slow to do anything in premiere in safe boot.
I have a project that I must get done in 2 weeks! Somebody please get back to me ASAP!
    Thanks,
    Eric

Well, it's been a while since my last report, mostly because I haven't been using the program as much... however, today I needed to use it and well... it happened.  And it happened on a blank document too.  I made sure that all my other applications were closed at this time, and when I rebooted it, it continues to freeze.  Here is what I saw on the task manager.  Seems to be pretty similar to last time:
I use Flash to do Timeline animation and sometimes vector art.  The program has crashed before on a reset of preferences.  You also noted that there is a Flash.exe instead of a Flash 32.exe, I don't see it in the task manager at all... I only see the Flash 32 that I've been posting.
Perhaps I may be missing something, but the reasons for crashing that you listed do not seem to be the reasons why I am crashing and freezing.  While I can understand loading up a bloated file and having it crash the program, I have never seen this program until CS6 freeze once, and then from then on out, until I restart the computer, it will freeze time and time again.  It's bewildering as to why that is happening.
The Application doesn't seem to be sucking in a ton of memory.  The application will crash out-of-the-blue.  Sometimes when I simply click into the program on a blank doc (like this last crash), it will freeze up.  And if the program isn't even able to work with a blank doc, I don't think the content of ANY file is the problem.
I'm really at a loss.  I might have to downgrade back to CS3.  This is one of my most used programs, and if it's impossible to have it run smoothly without me having to restart my computer every few hours, I'm not really sure what to do.

The update could have exposed this hardware issue
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
However, I have noticed the same problem on my Mid 2012 Retina MBP when I have it plugged into my external display so it may be a software issue as well.
Anyways you should probably try and get it fixed by Apple first if your laptop was bought within 3 years ago.

  • Early 2011 Macbook Pro - Black screen at random

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro, running Mac OS X (10.7.5). Seemingly at random, the screen will go black and the only way to get it back is to hold the power button down. When it turns back on, everything is running as normal. It's been happening more and more frequently, so I'm wondering is this a problem I can fix on my own? Can it be fixed or is it just a glitch I should just deal with?
(Please explain everything to me as if I were a 5-year-old)

    Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro.
Add me to the long list of customers experiencing display issues.  HUGE problems with a blank screen when waking from sleep and difficulty starting up (video glitches & hi fan speed).  After about 6 months and 2 genius bar visits I finally did a complete HD wipe/clean install of Mavericks with all of the default settings.
The situation has improved only slightly overall, but at first things were great.  I was confident I had it licked.
As I restored apps & profile settings things start to get wonky.  The last install I did was Picasa (I thought this app was the culprit before the wipe).  I successfully restored my Picasa settings and all was fine.  I even closed the lid and when I opened it the next day the screen came right back on.  Then I tried to sync my iPhone and BAM!  Screen goes out and the system is hung (no response to keystrokes or sound events).
    Power button shutdown.
Restarted and the Macbook hung as the previously opened apps reopened.
    Power button shutdown again.
Restart this time was normal and everything opened just fine.  The console logs show NOTHING indicate any issues or that the machine experienced a kernel panic or anything like that.
It's been 1 whopping 36 hours since my clean install and I've already crashed twice.
But now I use my Macbook with anxiety as I never know when it's going to crap out again.  Maybe it's time I switch back to Linux on an inexpensive wintel laptop as I won't buy another Apple laptop if this is the what I should expect from a $2000 machine.
Incidently, I also have a 2010 MB pro which had dispaly issues and Apple replaced the logic board at no cost (out of warranty) as part of a replacement program.   I've seen MANY forum posts suggesting that Apple should step up and provide the same level of service for the Early 2011 MB Pros...  I tend to agree.

  • Macbook Pro - Black screen and external monitor

    Hi there,
I'm new here and it would be great if anybody could give me some advice about my Macbook Pro issue. First of all, I would like to thank all the contributors for your comments. I'll go to an Apple Store asap, but I'll really appreciate any of your comments so I'll know more about this issue and how to manage it.
    My device details are:
    Macbook Pro / 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 / 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 / Macintosh HD / Mac OS X 10.6.8
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
    Other connected equipment:
HP Monitor Pavilion 22xi (with an official Apple adapter - projector's plug)
Wacom tablet Bamboo Fun (USB connection)
I usually work with graphics software (Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.), since I bought my laptop (3-4 years ago) it has worked faultlessly. But I started to notice some problems about two weeks ago. The problem is basically always the same: After some hours of work, suddenly and randomly (it tends to happen when I click on a button) the screen turns off but the computer is still running (I can hear the fan and hard disk). As I said I use an external monitor, and it also turns off at the same time. That's why I thought it may not be a problem with the screen, it's probably related to the graphics card ?¿?
The troubleshooting steps that I've tried are:
After waiting several minutes and without any response, I have to restart my laptop. When it turns on a Panic Report message pops up. It says that a severe problem made me turn the laptop off suddenly (or something like that). The Panic Report says something about "kernel_task", I have no idea what it is, just in case it could help to clarify more (I've printed all these panic reports).
I also have to mention that this laptop gets really hot on the left side, which I reckon it's a very common thing in these devices. I have to use a desktop electric fan to provide relief to both of us
I've also disable the "Automatic graphics switching" tab in Energy Saver menu.
Despite all of this, the screen and the external monitor are still turning off.
    Any idea?
    Thanks a lot,
    Clara

I would suggest that you run AHT using Using Apple Hardware Test. You can either reboot the machine and press the D key, or use your second Grey disk. This would potentially show you any HW problems.
Typically these older machines exhibit GPU issues. There is a third-party application called gfxCardStatus, that can provide some insight as well.
This may or may not help if there are GPU issues - About NVRAM and PRAM (reset NVRAM/PRAM/SMC).
It is possible to enable remote access (via SSH) and even if the screen is not working, the machine can be accessed remotely. Please see System Preferences -> Sharing.
Can you run a test with both the lid of the MBP and the external monitor plugged in. Does your external monitor disconnect, but the internal one still show a screen?

  • Macbook pro won't boot, or crashes after boot

My 2009 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.5 either has difficulty starting up, or after start up, it crashes. However, it seems to only crash when attempting to stream video from any web browser I've tried using (Firefox & Safari, (Chrome not supported by 10.5)).
When the computer starts up successfully, all seems ok until I try streaming video, usually from YouTube or similar. Then after about 2 minutes of it playing the video, the screen will freeze, audio will continue, and then the screen flashes wildly like a strobe light, or sometimes a checkered/plaid-like pattern appears on the screen in weird reds and blues.
When the computer does not boot at all, it will either appear to be booting, then freeze on the blue screen. Or as soon as I power up, I'll get the grey screen but it will have the checkered/plaid-like pattern on it, and it will stay there forever until I hold the power to turn it off.
Most of the time booting in safe mode will be successful, and from there I will run Disk Utility, my hard drive appears OK, but I have to repair disk permissions a few times before it says everything is OK. Sometimes attempting to boot in safe mode is not successful, so I will boot in Single User mode and run fsck -fy code until I get the "OK" message.
I'm out of ideas, and the problem doesn't seem to be going away. Do I need to erase the disk and reinstall OS X or  update to a newer version of OS X?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds a bit like a heat issue.
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
Sadly, it also sounds like this, which doesn't cover the 2009 MBP...

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last crash  & the Startup right after that for clues.
Click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v
A few dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.

  • Macbook pro: blank screen on start up? help!

my macbook pro had a blank screen on start up. I tried restarting it and nothing worked. I could hear the computer running, but nothing would show up on the screen. When I would shine a light at the screen on start up I could faintly see the apple, but after startup it would go completely black. Then, off a whim, I tried plugging it in to our tv via an HDMI cord and it shows up now on the TV but still nothing on the computer display. How do I fix this?

Can you try Command+S for Safe Mode boot? OS X Mavericks: Start up in safe mode

  • MacBook Pro blank screen-frozen.

I have the Macbook Pro early version 2011. For the past couple of weeks, my macbook kept saying strtup disk full. I erased as much possible, but it continued. I ignored it, and my laptop still worked fine. Yesterday,I went to turn it on and the login screen appeared as usual, once I entered my password the screen tuned white and went blank. I waited thinking it would load but it didn't. I restarted it and shut it down various times. I plugged it in and left it off over night, this morning the samer thing happened. The guest user seems to work fine. Now when I login a message pops up saying startup disk full. It is still frozen. It just so happens, that yesterday I disabled my phone due to a student messing with my passcode. My iphone says iPhone is disabeld connect to iTunes. I don't know if plugging it in to my macbook could have been the cause of this. Please Help. Although I am good with a macbook, I am not so good with the technical terms and programs so if you could dummy proof this for me it would help alot. Thanks.

    Hello imawsm
I have sort of the same problem, mbp 15" early 2011.
The first major thing that got broken was the HD - luckily it happened when it was still under the initial warranty and apple replaced it for free, but unluckily I lost all of my files during that time.
After the replacement I've had no problems and no symptoms, when a few weeks ago I was watching a youtube video and suddenly the screen froze and would get stuck on the white screen when I bootup.  I had to force shutdown, verify and repair disk, reset the PRAM and it seemed to work for a time, but it kept getting stuck on a white screen, sometimes pixelized or blue screen with vertical lines.
I brought it to the authorized store for diagnosis where they were able to recover my files and had it updated to Lion but they said the screen is starting to get broken.  I mean - !?@#$! this laptop usually sits on my desk and I rarely take it out or move it around for work, I'm sure I never bumped the unit.  I always plug it in an AVR, and all the other necessary precautions. I take good care of it since it's also my first mac, I keep it well ventilated and shut it down every night.  I work on Adobe graphics software which is not heavy and monitor the temp with iStat, and if I can hear the fans, I let it take a break.  Right now it's still on the white screen
That's why it's so frustrating to have invested on what is claimed to be a quality product only to have its hardware break down before its second year.  Apple should definitely provide longer initial warranties, and focus on quality hardware the way it focuses on making their products look pretty.  We have an Acer laptop here at home working great, and it's older than my mbp.
