MacBook Pro boot up taking forever
I have been strains at the start up screen of my 17" MacBook pro for over 15 mins.
I had just cleaned up a lot of hard drive space and decided it would be a good idea to reboot.
What to do?

Why wont my brand new macbook pro boot to an external disk?
why wont my brand new macbook pro boot to an external disk? I have the 10.7.4 on both. The MBP came with it so I installed it onto the hard drive i have been using the same way with an older macbook pro but the new MBP does not see the startup disk. So i installed the same version of the os onto the MBP by hooking it up to my imac as a target disk because it would not recognize the install usb stick. Now the brand new MBP doesnt start up
I had the same issue. The 2012 macbook pro has a different 10.7.4 build that is not yet available for public release. It won't boot no matter how much you try. You need to wait for Mountain Lion and create a start up disk from ML. Apple most likely will release a 10.7.4 update for the 2012 models, but they are focused on ML now.

Macbook pro boots to white screen and a ?
macbook pro boots to white screen and a ?
Gus@MaggiesFarm,
try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get past the white screen now? -

Can someone please Interpret this EtreCheck for me? Macbook Pro Boot Time Really Slow.
Can someone please give me detailed instruction on what to do no next. I've read several forum discussion on this subject and seen various examples. i would like help with mine. Reason being is because my MBP boot up time is almost around 2-3mins long sometimes it can even be upto 5mins. reason i ask is because i know this is not normal. compared to my macbook (mid-2010) this is REALLY slow. And all the specs of my MBP should in theory make my MB a thing of the past. (Why i bought the MBP in the first place). i've done PRAM reset and booted in Safe Mode. i've removed several applications using the correct uninstalls where required.
i have ran a terminal commands to clear the kernal caches and got these results (not sure if it will help). And neither have made a difference.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutesafter the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
Today my Macbook Pro (about a year old) started acting very strangely. I got the spinning beachball and the whole thing froze up. I rebooted it, and I got the little folder with the question mark. Okay... Anyway, rebooted it and selected the appropriate drive (the only one) and it got me through the login screen, but then froze there. I rebooted again and started up in safe mode. That worked okay, and I backed up my important files and ran Yasu. Rebooted it again, and it started up okay, I figured I was out of the woods but after using the computer for a little while the same thing happened again—spinning beach ball, and had to reboot. Got the folder with the flashing question mark again. Tried to do the boot into safe mode again, but got the question mark again. Tried the boot select, and it just hanged. Put in my Snow Leopard disc and tried to boot from it, but to no avail: I got the "You need to restart your computer" message.
The next step was to reset the PRAM, and that seems to have worked, for now—I'm working on my laptop. However, I'm worried that this is all a sign of some problem with the computer. Should I be concerned? It's covered by AppleCare, and I was thinking of taking it in to the shop to get them to look at it. But, I can't really afford to be without my computer for too too long.
I thought I'd see what you kind folk thought. I need this computer for work. I have an old Macbook I can use in a pinch, but I originally replaced it with the Pro because it wasn't always reliable.Hi Marek,
I do keep my system updated. Actually, now that you mention it, the last crash came after I finished installing all the updates through System Update. I did repair the permissions before I took it in to the shop the first time.
I booted in Safe Mode and opened up the error log. There are MANY errors coming up, so much that I can't post them all—this first set is just this morning, in the span of about five minutes. The second (below the ====) are from last night. There are too many to post from the same second, most of which are linked to sender "google.Chrome[158]" and give a message along the lines of "Bartleby.local Google Chrome Helper [253] <Error>: unknown error code: invalid context." Sometimes "invalid context" is changed to "invalid drawable" or "invalid numerical value"—just all kinds of invalid things. There are also a couple from Mail about "error getting audio property: 560947818."
My guess is that I should uninstall Chrome? I suppose it couldn't hurt. I would like to know why it is causing problems, though.
At any rate, here first is the error log from this morning (no crash yet; in safe mode) followed by a sample from just before the crash last night.

I just installed Mavricks over Snow Lepard, and my boot speed is really slow and so is the quit time. From boot to ability to use apps. is slightly greater than 1 minute. Once the desk top appears, the icons in the dock and all aps are not active for at least 25-30 seconds. I would really appreciate any advice anyone more knowledgeable that I can offer. I have attached my system boot log from BOOT_TIME to 1 minute past the time on the clock when I logged in. (I apologize in advance for the length of the log, but hopefully it will suply the needed clues):

Thanks again... Happy upcoming Turkey Day!In the future please don't post so much information unless you are asked for it. Most of what you posted is useless.
Here's what you can try:
Try these in order:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Macbook Pro Booting Unattended
This has been an odd problem. I am now GMT +3 and have what is now a very consistent problem: my Macbook Pro will Boot without input from me at 3:00 AM (that is 0:00 GMT) every single night IF the power supply is attached. If not attached, it will not boot.
I have been shutting it down and have the lid closed (as we are in a high dust environment), but then it is sleeping in the morning. When I open the lid, it wakes and is at the "blue screen", quickly resolving to the login screen. Each night it boots at 3:00:17.
I only have 1 account on the machine, and nothing is selected in the energy savings/ "scheduled start or wake" settings.
If I leave the power unplugged, it will not boot like this in the middle of the night. This morning as I was out I observed the following: I had the power unplugged overnight, so it was not booted in the morning. I then plugged in the power and walked away (wanting to ensure my battery is topped of). When returning, I notice the machine sleeping! As I look at my log it appears as if it must have booted very shortly after I plugged in the power! I have tried looking at the logs, but don't see what is tripping the boot. Any advice?
I will post a log, but not for the faint of heart:
First log is from April 28: I kept the prior shutdown log messages (from April 27) as well.
Second log is from this morning, May 12 (where it booted almost immediately after plugging in power supply). I will also include the previous night's shutdown log in this cutting.

Grey screen on Macbook Pro boot up
I've got a Macbook Pro 15" laptop (mid-2011) running Mac OS X Lion. It recently broke down and I can't get past the grey screen on bootup. It gets to the Apple logo and the circle loading animation then straight to grey screen.
I've tried Safe Mode, zapped the PRAM, plugged everything out of it including the power cable, even tried to boot the recovery HD using the Option key. When I clicked Recovery HD, it went straight back to the grey screen. Nothing seems to work.
I bought the computer the same week Lion came out so it had Snow Leopard on it and came with the Snow Leopard installation disc. I downloaded Lion from the App store for free. What would happen if I booted the computer from the Snow Leopard install disc? Would I lose anything that was previously on my computer like software I downloaded for Lion (Pages, Numbers, Keynote etc.)? Would I be able to get these back if I reinstall Lion after the boot and where would I get Lion from as I don't have the installation disc. Could I access my Apple account history on the App store and reinstall Lion from there somehow as I've seen Lion is no longer available on the App store?
HELP!!What would happen if I booted the computer from the Snow Leopard install disc? Would I lose anything that was previously on my computer like software I downloaded for Lion (Pages, Numbers, Keynote etc.)?
Booting the computer from the Snow Leopard install disc alone won't do anything. Only if you were to attempt an installation from that disc might you run into trouble. Kind of like trying to put a propeller on a jet airplane. It just can't be done without removing the entire engine!
The 10.6 installer disc won't get you to the App Store. For that you need to boot with command-R.
If your data isn't backed up, you seriously need to consider some data recovery options before attempting even a command-R. Once your data is backed up, contact the App Store support to get the Lion or Mountain Lion installer program to show up on your App Store, depending on where your software compatibility lies.
In the future, it is always wise to keep a clone of your system in event something should go wrong. That way you don't need the store to have the correct installer for your system. -

MacBook Pro boots up really slow
Hello everyone!
I have a couple of issues with my MacBook Pro and I was hoping someone could help me.
It's about a mid-2010 i7 2.66 GHz MacBook Pro, 8 GB ram, running Mavericks.
The problem is as follows:
My MacBook takes between 3 and 6 minutes to boot up. It is the kernel stage that takes really long. The rest is fine. Besides that, the battery is also empty very quickly. After about 1,5 or 2 hours of surfing on the internet, the battery is empty.
I recently put in a new battery because the other one said it should be replaced. I hoped this would fix the battery issue and maybe even the boot up issue, but unfortunately the battery is still empty very quick and the boot up is still slow.
I think the boot up started to get slower around a year ago. It then took like 1 or 2 minutes instead of the couple of seconds it used to take. About half a year ago that boot up time significantly got worse. And I think it may have gotten a little more worse after I installed Mavericks a little less than half a year ago.
Besids that, there are a few more issues. I'm not sure though if they are related to the slow boot up or to the battery.
When I connect or disconnect the adapter to my MacBook Pro, everything freezes for a while. I usually can still move my cursor around, but video or audio freezes and I can't open new windows or something like that. The freezing takes between 30 secs and 2 minutes. This is something that started to happen about a little more than half a year ago I think.
Also, when I try to save something, a document or an image from a website, it takes a while for the Finder-popup to show my folders. It used to immediately show all the folders, but now it takes a while to load them. This is something that started to happen a couple of months ago.
I honestly have no clue why these things are happening.
I already checked my harddisk. I used Disk Utility and then the First Aid tab to check my harddisk and everything is fine. I also have over 100GB still available, so the harddisk is not too full or something.
I also checked the activity monitor. I'm not too sure what to look at on the monitor, but as fas as I can tell, there is nothing strange going on.
I also already reset my PRAM and SMC.
Does anyone have any idea how to solve these problems? Or maybe just point me in the right direction?
Many thanks in advance!I just performed a normal AHT test (I don't have time of an extended one right now), but it said "No trouble found".
So I guess we can say it's not a hardware issue?
Is there a way to find out what software could be causing these issues? I rather not format/reinstall the whole thing, so it would be nice if there is a way to find out what is causing the problems. -
Macbook Pro boots to a blue screen. Only boots in safe mode
Hi, I am a long time reader, first time poster.
OK so I just go a new Macbook Pro 13' from my school (my school made it mandatory to get a mac this year) and I was installing some of my applications. Then I got the "You need to restart your computer" message. I restarted, and all i got was a blue screen with my pointer. Then after a while it says the same restart message. Also I have tried booting from the Snow Leopard Disk, but I get the same message before the actual SL installer comes up. I have been able to get the Macbook to boot in safe mode and I repaired permissions and the disk, however that does not seem to help. I have also reset the PRAM and that did nothing. I am running out of ideas... how can I fix this?!? Help! You should not be having kernel panics on a new Mac. Kernel panic causes is sometimes hardware related. Your computer is still under warranty since it's new. You can either call Apple tech support or try the suggestions mentioned in User Tips: Kernel Panics and this article - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392

Help: Windows XP on MacBook Pro Boot Camp Partition via Target Disk Mode
Firstly, let me lay out my situation. I have an old MacBook Pro (2,2) with a broken disk drive. It was dropped in its youth and can no longer read from or write to CDs or DVDs of any kind. I have just recently bought a new MacBook Pro to replace it (6,2) and am currently trying to convert the old computer into an XP machine through Boot Camp. I'd like to be able to do so without having to buy an external disk drive.
After a clean install of OS X (10.6.3) onto the old machine, I successfully partition 85GB of space (although I previously attempted the same with a 32GB file system to no avail as well) for XP to be installed upon. Because I cannot boot my XP install disk directly from the broken disk drive, I then close Boot Camp Assistant and shut down the computer. I start it up in Target Disk Mode to be accessed from the new MacBook (6,2).
Once the old MacBook is connected, I insert my XP install disk into the new MacBook (6,2) and boot from the disk. After allowing the XP (Professional) boot to load the install files, I arrow-key down to my 85GB partition (FAT32, named standard as "BOOTCAMP") on the old MacBook (2,2)'s hard drive and select it as the partition I would like to install to. This is where I am directed to a new boot window that tells me in a series of paragraphs that the XP installer cannot reach the selected partition for what seems to be a number of reasons. What it seems to be trying to say to me is that it cannot do a remote install of XP on a Target Disk Mode-connected machine, while not "knowing" that I am trying to do so. It's a similar message to the one that Boot Camp Assistant shows when one tries to create a Boot Camp partition on a machine that is being accessed via Target Disk Mode (Apple puts it much more clearly than Microsoft).
I'd be perfectly content, albiet slightly vexed, to conclude here that it is not possible, shuttle over to the nearest Best Buy, and purchase an external disk drive if it weren't for one thing: I tried the same thing two weeks ago with Ubuntu 10.10 and it installed perfectly on the Boot Camp partition I had created then (I have since wiped all and installed OS X cleanly on the laptop).
Here comes the point/questions:
If the Ubuntu boot disk can access the partition, why can't the XP boot disk?
Is there some way to convince the boot system that the drive is local, rather than being accessed via Target Disk Mode?
Is there an easy solution that doesn't even require that, and will allow me to install to the disk over a firewire connection?
If anyone's knowledgeable and/or brave enough to tackle this one, I'll be eternally grateful. Heck, I'll be grateful if anyone even attempts to tackle it.
Thanks,
-Alec PageWindows XP will only install from the optical drive. Target Disk Mode does not work with Windows volumes. Windows will not install from any external device.

Built-in iSight, MacBook Pro, Boot Camp, XP
Though the Apple website suggests that Boot Camp has support for the built-in iSight, I cannot seem to get it to function in XP on my MacBook Pro. Following is a summary of my configuration. The built-in iSight works perfectly within OS-X.
Here is my configuration summary...
Hardware: MacBook Pro
Software: Latest public release of OS-X, XP-Pro, and all patches for both.
Firmware: Latest public release
BootCamp: Latest public release, all drivers up to date
Access : Admin on both OS's
Using the Windows XP Device Manager, here is the status of the built-in iSight on my MacBook Pro.
System Properties: Hardware: Device Manager: Imaging devices: Apple Built-in iSight - Unprogrammed: General: Device status:
"Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)"
I've gone through uninstall / reinstall of the driver multiple times with no change in status.
Has anybody gotten the built-in iSight on a MacBook Pro to function properly in XP?
Thanks in advance, Randy
Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.6)Yes, the built-in iSight camera functions properly under Windows XP Pro on my 2.0 MHz MacBook computer. But the built-in iSight camera on my 1.83 GHz iMac does not function at all under Windows XP Pro.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why it does or doesn't work, so I can't tell you what you can do to solve the problem. I spent several hours trying to get functionality back (at one time it worked) on my iMac but eventually gave up pending the next release of Boot Camp.
Unless it's extremely important to you, you might be better off to wait for a fix from Apple.
