Macbook Pro boots to Darwin prompt after update

I updated my Macbook Pro using Auto Update this morning, and now I can only boot to a Darwin prompt. The computer would boot, go to the starting OS X screen, then straight to the prompt. If I exited the prompt, I would be taken to a user login screen (which would revert back to the prompt after an attempted login)
I checked the system log and it showed that SecurityAgent was crashing.
So, per the advice in this post:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1545778#1545778
I renamed the NetInfo Database, and reran the initial setup using the proper account short name.
However, now the computer goes to the gray timer circle before straight to the prompt, no Starting OS X screen.
The system log now shows the following:
loginwindow[66]: Login Window Started Security Agent
loginwindow[66]: AuthorizationRef doesn't have a username (<LoginAuthRefMgr: 0x336150>).\n
launchd: onoption repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping
I thought flushing the NetInfo Database would help, but apparently not.
I would appreciate any help, and thanks!

I am having the exact same issue!!!! The problem started as soon as I updated to 10.5.4. I sent my computer off to Apple's Depot to be fixed. The 6 day turn around really slowed me down. After my MacBook Pro was returned I had a note from Service that my Logic Board was replaced and my 3rd Party RAM was not 'Apple Friendly.' The RAM is fine and in Perfect Working Condition. I am assuming that after the Apple Techs got to my RAM they did not proceed to replace my Graphics Card or the Inverter Board (the small cable that sends power to the monitor). I took my MacBook Pro out of the box, re-inserted my 3rd-Party RAM and the computer worked fine for 3 weeks. That's until Last Night I had a FireWire Drive Mounting issue and had to Hard Re-Start my system it was then that the Black Screen Issue started again. Again, your notes are EXACTLY the same issue I am now having! I have called Apple Support and they will now take my computer to service with 'White Glove Treatment.'
After reading your post I am convinced that this is a software Bug. Apple please update. As of now I cannot even startup my computer to check for updates! Also, I cannot afford to be without my system for another week!!

  • New Macbook Pro does not start up after updating...HELP!!!

    Hi,
My new Macbook Pro does not start up after it got updated. The first time I used it, it was perfect. I updated it and restarted it when it told me to but it doesn't boot. It shows an apple and a spinning circle when it turns on but that's it.
    Can somebody please help me?

You should probably post your question in the MacBook Pro discussions:

  • Macbook Pro doesn't shut down after update

After downloading the update for Safari 5.1.2, I restarted my computer to finish the installation but it stayed stuck on a grey screen with the software update bar on top. Now I can't shut down my computer. Everytime I shut it down I'm brought back to the same grey screen and nothing other than the power button will shut my macbook down.
I'm running Lion on a Macbook pro 2.4 GHz

How long are you waiting? I've waited as long as 3-minutes in Leopard already. I was about ready to force shutdown, but then all of a sudden, it shut down.
If yo don't reboot that often, you may have a bunch of virtual memory swap files it's unloading. Try shutting down right after a reboot and see what happens.

  • MacBook Pro failure to start up after update.

I updatd to the new apple software to my MacBook Pro and on its restart it loads to the point that it shows the apple symbol with a progress bar and then shuts down before I can get to the home screen. Have attempted a restart on 3 or 4 occasion with no success.
I have also attempted a genius bar appointment with no success due to no availability of appointments.
    Any help would be appreciated?

    the following happens every time:
    Starts up with apple logo
Shows my profile, I click and type in password
Apple logo stays and a loading bar starts (update progress?)
Bar progresses about 5% and stops, progress disappears,, MacBook shuts down.
    Two possible issues.
    1: Failed firmware update
2: Corrupted OS X boot and the at boot fsck drive repair can't fix it.
Run through this list of fixes, hopefully you have backups of your data off the machine.

  • My macbook pro won't start up after updating it

I Have a macbook pro with Mavericks (I don't remember exactly which one) which I bought in 2012, yesterday night I updated it and it restarted but it took forever and I thought it was installing something, so I left it like that all night and day and is still in the gray screen with the apple logo and the wait spiral. I got worried so I entered the disk utility option and checked the disk, and it said everything was Ok. When I restarted it again, the gray screen never left so I tried with the "safe rebooting" ctrl + cmnd + V and the screen shows now endless rows of "disk0s2: 1/0 error."  and it's been like this for about half an hour now, I'm really worried I'll my data.

An 1/O error cannot be repaired by Disk Utiity.
That requires a more robust disk utility such as DiskWarrior
You can contact the developer using their email address here.
Best to get their recommendation before purchasing.
Hopefully you have a backup  to restore from once the drive is either repaired or replaced.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic report (with a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic") under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang report.

  • 24-inch Cinema Display and Mid-2010 Macbook Pro - Cinema Display still flickers after updates

I currently have a 15-inch Macbook Pro (mid 2010) hooked up to my 24-inch Cinema Display.  I have updated all the firmware for both the Cinema Display and the Macbook Pro but still get intermittent flickering.  Moreover, I have cleared the PRAM and VRAM.  I have done ever possible update I can find, the system is fully functioning.  Help?

I am having this exact same problem.  2010 iMac with NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256MB.  I have it hooked to a 30" display through a DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter.  The 30" is fine, but I have graphical corruption constantly on the main iMac screen.
This all started as soon as I updated to Yosemite a couple days ago.

  • MacBook Pro won't start up after update

I just updated my MacBook last night and now when I turn it on it gets to the grey apple screen and shuts down.

    Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    Try a normal boot.
    Perform a Safe Boot:  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204?viewlocale=en_US
Try a normal boot.  If it boots reliably with a Safe Boot but not a normal boot then it is probably a software issue.  Post back for more instructions.
If you do not have a recent backup create one in case your disk is failing.  (Post back if you need instructions on how to do that w/o booting OS X.)
Boot in Recovery Mode.  (Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.  If you are running 10.6 or earlier boot from an installation disk.)  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left system disk icon.  Does S.M.A.R.T. report “Verified”?
If it does not say “Verified” then the disk or the disk cable is failing and will need to be replaced.  As noted above, if it is failing the first priority is to back it up. Post back for more instructions for emergency data recovery and replacing the disk or its cable.
If the S.M.A.R.T. status is “Verified” then repair the disk.  Click on the icon underneath and indented to the right, usually called “Macintosh HD”.  Repair Disk.  It should finish normally with a green OK message.  If it does not try to repair it again.
If it will not finish with a green OK message then having a backup is again essential.  The remedy is a clean install:  backup, reformat the drive (erasing all the data), reinstall OS X, and then restore form the backup.  (Post back if you need instructions on how to do any of those steps.)
If it repaired all errors (green OK) and is still not booting normally “Macintosh HD” icon again and Repair Permissions.  Ignore the numerous messages in black.  It should finish with a green OK message.  If not, run it again.
Once you have repaired the disk and the disk permissions, if it will not boot properly, reinstall OS X:
Boot in Recovery Mode and then install OS X.
If it is still not booting normally after the reinstall then, as a last resort, perform a clean install.  Make sure you have a current backup (Time Machine or a clone).  Boot in Recovery Mode.  Use disk utility to erase the system disk (deleting all data).  In the Erase tab click on Security Options… Select “writes a single pass of zeros.”  This will write to every block on the disk, mapping out bad blocks.  Install OS X.  Reload your data from the backup.  (On the first boot the Migration Assistant should as you to restore from your backup.)

  • MacBook Pro not turning back on after updating

When I update my software (using system update), the computer updates perfectly. However, when the update is completed, the computer turns itself off, instead of restarting like it used to.
After this, when I hit the power button to turn it back on, the power light comes on, but then it turns itself back off again. I usually have to hold the power button in for about 5-10 seconds, and repeat this a couple of times to actually get it to turn on.
I have also noticed that a file in the recycle bin called "recovered files" is being created after the process.
A while back, I made the huge mistake of hitting the power button in the middle of an update (eeeek!) and I think this may have caused the issue.

IF you DO NOT KNOW your administrative password, then SKIP the following procedure.  It will make things worse.
Otherwise (if you DO KNOW your password) then try...
    1)     Apple -> Restart but starting up in Safe mode by holding down left shift key after the chime until the spinning gear.  The gear will spin a long time, as it's clearing your caches.
    2)     Running Verify Disk and Repair Permissions with /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app.  If anything red shows up, copy it to a text file of some sort.  Your problem is of the more interesting kind.
    3)     Looking at System Preferences -> System -> Accounts -> Login Items to see whether there might be something there that shouldn't be there.
    4)     Apple -> Restart to reboot back to ordinary mode.
    ...That help?

My MacBook Pro 10.6.8 prompted me of a new itunes update this morning, so i downloaded it. Since then itunes has been starting up randomly on its own, and starts playing the first song on the list. I pause the song, and it resumes it on its own again. I'm not joking. So, I end up quiting out of itunes; but, it starts right back up again on its own. After quiting out of the app a few times, it eventually stops reopening; however, about an hour later (or less) it opens again. HOW DO I MAKE IT STOP? I'm just about to delete itunes, because I've had enough of this crap. I hope someone can help. I've restarted the laptop, and it seemed like that fixed it, then itunes started up doing the same thing again an hour later. ituneshelper is unchecked; bluetooth is off; i only have speakers and a mouse plugged in (also charger).

Read this Apple Discussion Thread and possible solutions. The audio jack has been the main culprit, also certain sync and automation settings including connected remotes.

    I have a macbook pro core i7 mid 2012
And update to the latest version 10.8.4 system after updating the system I have the problem appeared to take off the device and stops at the apple logo for about 5 minutes and then enters the desktop How can I solve this problem and thank you

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
