MacBook Pro boots up... yet screen is black after repair.
So, after my 2007 MacBook Pro 17" kept crashing after overheating, I figured my issues may be due to dust. So after watching a bunch of tutorials on how to do this... I finally cracked open my MacBook Pro last night and began to clean out all the dust... and sure enough there was a lot of dust! I also removed the logic board and replaced the thermal paste that touches the heat sink. (I read somewhere that would also help.) After all that I put everything back together. Plugged it in... it did its apple chime and began to boot up... yet all I see is a black screen... CRAP! I'm thinking the power connector underneath the logic board didn't get connected right, since that was the hardest one to connect! Needless to say, I need to tare it apart again and try reconnecting everything again...
If that's not the problem... any other suggestions? Besides overheating, the computer has been working fine. I hope I didn't royalily screw up my logic board when reconnecting things.
You didn't put it back together correctly or you damaged something in the process. the only thing you can do it take it apart again and then put it back together making sure everything is connected correctly. If it still fails to light up the screen then you damaged something.

Macbook Pro 2008. My screen stayed black and is unresponsive and sleep light is on. I shut down and then restarted and nothing happened on screen but sleep light came on and is solid.
It could possibly be the video card, or the logic board. You could try a smc reset if you have not done s yet. smc reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
I had an issue similar to this, and there was a bad logic board, hard drive and video card.
You might want to bring it in to the Apple store, they do the diagnostic for free and give you a repair price.
They offer a flat repair rate, which they fix what ever is wrong as long it was due to liquid damage.
The repair cost me about 1/3rd the price of a new machine and the machine has been fine ever since.
It's worth getting it checked out.

Gus@MaggiesFarm,
try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get past the white screen now? -

Hello mac community, I am new,
I updated a program today everything was working fine yesterday and now today I was updating PLAY a music engine program it seems to have caused the mac to go crazy. I also updated VE PRO 5 another music program. Everything has gone crazy. It turns on but then then the screen goes black after a while 5-10mins. I managed to get the crash report.
Why is the graphics card all of a sudden effected by program updates.

Yesterday upon startup for the first time the screen went black. Had to do a force shutdown. Unplugged all external devices. Reset everything as well. Slowly checked everything was on the phone with Apple even during the process. Seemed to correct the issue. Then of course I get off the phone, restarted my computer and it goes black randomly again.
Rebooted fine. Checked all my hard disks internal and external, verified and repaired permissions on main drive and clone. Since then nothing yet...But I still feel its either the Video Card or the Monitor as everything else is fully operational.
I plan on taking it in to look at as my applecare is up in November but I cant point my finger on it. And really am trying to avoid lugging the mac pro and monitor in at the same time...(Not the easiest thing with lack of parking in nyc..)
If the display was dying I feel like it would have konked out already.
The funny thing is I have had to replace video cards and monitors in the past but this time I cant quite figure out what the **** is going on.
I am leaning towards the video card as I noticed it flickered a little when opening plug in windows in pro tools or multiple windows in sfari but it doesnt make sense.
Worst part is I cant do a hardware test cause for some reason this computer doesnt have the software installed. It does nothing when I hold down the D button...
I totally baffled but the randomness of this. -
MacBook Pro boots to grey screen
I have a non-booting MacBook Pro that will POST (Apple chime) and boot to a grey screen.
I consider myself a pretty advanced troubleshooter but this one stumps me. Here is a summary of most of what I have tried so far, not necessarily in this order:
Reset NVRAM
Reset PMU
Attempted to boot to DVD Command + C
Attempted to boot to Target-mode Command + T
Attempted to selected startup disc manually Command + Option
Attempted to boot to SUM Command + S
Attempted to re-image firmware using CD
Attempted to boot diagnostic CD Command + D
NONE of these work. I have fixed many Macs in my day and have not encountered an issue like this!I've been through both a logic board failure and a hard drive failure on my iBook, and neither had these symptoms. Since the article I referred to had to do with having no video, my guess would be that it is the logic board but I don't really know. It doesn't really sound like hard drive failure to me, or at least it's nothing like the way mine failed.
Since the article wants you to reset the PMU in an older Mac, and I suppose the SMC in a newer Mac, I wonder if actually it is the SMC which has gone bad. The SMC is an integrated circuit after all, and if it were to go bad and not be able to be reset, then that might explain what's going on here.
But I'm just speculating. It will be interesting to see what Apple has to say. Please let us know.
Good luck! -
Yosemite - MacBook Pro: Boot loop/Blue screen
Hi, I've been running Yosemite on my MacBook Pro for about a week now, then while using it yesterday the screen randomly went blue with black lines through it.
At the time I was playing a beta version of Football Manager 2015, so I thought that it was an error with the game. I forced a shutdown and left it for a minute or so. I turned it back on and now it continues to reboot itself during the status bar on startup (after about 40%).
I have already tried a couple of solutions:
Command + R: Blue screen
Command + Shift: White screen freeze during status bar startup
Option key: brings up Recovery but after clicking that the screen goes blue.
Command + Option + P + R: Still reboots. No change
Any suggestions/knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.I Have the same problem. Did you find a solution .

Macbook Pro Boot Issue, White Screen with Apple
Having a similar issue with my macbook pro. When I press the power button, a white screen appears with an apple icon in the middle and a small cirle on the bottom that is like a timer. I thought that the computer might be downloading something, but I left it on for hours and the computer didn't get out of that mode. I have tried several things such as the installation cd, first aid repair, but both said repairs weren't needed and that the drives were fine. Any suggestions on why the computer is doing this? It's been several days and I shut if off, leave it off for an entire day and when I turn it on, the same screen with the apple appears and nothing else.
Any ideas are appreciated!
Thank you!Hi Claudiat :
You could try a SMU reset, which may solve your problem,
from Apple:
MacBook, MacBook Pro
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.

Macbook Pro boots to grey screen but won't start up. How do I fix it?
Today I set my Macbook Pro on the couch but it slipped of and landed on its side (closed) on wood floor. Nothing broke, it all seems pretty normal. I pushed the power button to turn it on, but it only loaded to the grey screen with the apple and the spinning circle. I left it sitting there loading for several minutes, but nothing happened. I tried force shut down several times and restarted it. It still did the exact same thing. How do I fix it?

MacBook Pro Boot Problems Yet Again
Earlier last month, I posted a topic about how my Macbook Pro "crashed" and I ended up having to reformat my HD and it was working fine afterwards as long as I didn't install any OS X updates.
Just yesterday my Macbook started to just randomly freeze every two seconds when I went to open something, or type a simple word, or just when it started up & loaded the desktop period.
I ran the disk utility to try to verify/repair the disk and that did not work, I kept receiving the message "disk cannot be repaired, please backup, reformat and restore, blah blah" ...
PROBLEM IS.
Now when I turn it on, it always wants to boot in safe mode, but as the little bar is loading, it shuts the entire computer off before it even finishes loading (it starts to load and about less than a min later it shuts off). It happens EVERY TIME I turn my Mac on. What is the problem? Does AppleCare cover this? I've only had my Mac less than a year and already I'm experiencing problems that I shouldn't be having AT ALL.
I don't live close to an apple store, and I'm in college, so I can't just up and drive hours away to find a store.
I have an iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4th Generation now I'm afraid to even sync it with the Mac when it is fixed because I don't want to lose everything.Look at these data recovery tools if you aren't backed up:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html#RECOVER
Purchase AppleCare if you haven't already. You can do so anytime in the first year.
AppleCare by phone can usually with notebooks setup a mailin to repair with as little as 36 hour turn around in the U.S. The issue you are having may actually be a dying hard drive, or it may just need purchasing Alsoft Disk Warrior, or it may be a power supply issue or RAM issue. As long as it is Apple installed RAM, that's normally covered under warranty if nothing was dropped or damaged by bumping. Same with power supply. A bad power supply in the room can cause power supplies on computers to fail. A good APC surge protector can help protect a computer against spikes and surges not caused by lightning and some poor power. Other poor power has to be diagnosed by an electrician. Good luck! -
Hi everyone!
So I've had this problem from my macbook since months ago. It sometimes just shuts off by itself, the screen turning black and won't turn on until like after a few hours (sometimes a day, but sometimes you could also immediately open it just like that.)
When it shuts off and you plug the adapter it is still charging, the lights on the side of the macbook book still lights up just fine if you press the button on the side. the only problem is that it wont open until after a few minutes, hours or days (very unpredictable) (also tapping the macbook helps, I dont know if it "really" helps or not, but it works sometimes.) But when it open it will be working fine until another couple of weeks or 3 or a month (again unpredictable)
I dont know what's wrong with my laptop, please help me. It would be greatly appreciated! thank you so much in advance!Hold the power button down for 10+ seconds. Then bring the MBP to an Apple store for an evaluation.

MacBook Pro hanging with blue screen and spinner after installing Software Update
Hi I was wondering if someone could help me with this current issue. Just a few hours ago I finished reinstalling Mac OS X Snow Leopard in my MacBook Pro. I performed a clean installation as part of a yearly spring cleaning that I do on all my systems to keep them optimized. So there was I downloading some software updates which included the combo update of OSX 10.6.8 and others. The updates finished downloading and the system logged out to install the updates, when the updates finished installing my MacBook proceeded by logging out into a blue screen and show a gray spinner similar to the one seen when you start your Mac. Here's the problem after 2 hours the system is showing the spinner and the blue screen, I think that my computer has just hanged in the reboot process.
I was wondering what should I do? Do a force restart? Or leave it overnight?
Also, where can I find any information on what error is causing this issue?
I appreciate your responses and help.
By the way, I installed Mac OS X from a USB stick that has the original image of the disk installer that came bundled with my computer.Kappy wrote:
Force a shutdown. Do not restart yet, but first do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next, boot into Safe Mode then restart normally.
Hi Kappy,
Checked the hard drive after forcing a shutdown and booting from my Snow Leopard Installer USB Key and the status of the HDD says "Verified". I ran the repair and the volume was repaired successfully. Clicked on "Verify Disk" and it says "Macintosh HD appears to be OK". So I ran a second repair and again no errors were reported.
As suggested I booted back again in Safe Mode and restarted normally. All software appears to have been installed successfully. But I don't understand why my computer hanged and showed the spinner after installing the updates in the blue screen that appears just before rebooting. I am aware that the system shows that spinner after a OS update but the longest it lasts is 30 seconds at the most in my previous cases. -
Have a MacBookPro. The computer will not boot up. the screen has black and white bands with multi color bands as well.
Yeah it's dead. Take it to an Apple Genius Bar and have it checked out. Then buy a new one.

Take it in for service. Your screen probably needs to be replaced.
