Macbook Pro Brightness Setting

Long time listener, first time caller-
New apeture user here wondering if there is a proper, or exact, monitor brightness setting on my macbook pro I should be using when viewing and adjusting images?

The only way to get consistent color is to use a hardware calibrator.
Even with hardware calibration, the MBP screens are not good enough for exacting color work.
If you use a hardware calibrator, you must turn off "→System Preferences→Displays→Display→Automatically adjust brightness ... ". I recommend Aperture users turn this off even without hardware calibration.
Also turn off "→System Preferences→Energy Saver→Battery→Slightly dim the display ... ".
If you want to match display and printer outputs, calibrate the monitor brightness to 100 cd/m^2 or less. I use 85, as that gives me the best match with my printer (Epson 3880), my studio, and my eyes.
The environment in which you edit your images is probably as important as your monitor. Things to be aware of are: overall luminance, glare, color of ambient light, intrusion of direct light, contrast between display and surround.
Aperture allows you to set the background luminance of the Browser and the Viewer. Set them to 18% unless you have reason to do otherwise. "Aperture→Preferences→Appearance→Viewer {Browser} Brightness".
There are many sources on the Web -- search for "color calibration OS X" or "Color calibrated workflow" -- but no one place that I know of that spells it out.
The quick answer -- now that you've got this far -- is set the brightness to something that appears gray rather than light. This is probably close to the middle of the available range, and two or three steps lower than you might chose for comfortable viewing. Implicit in that is that what is best for editing photos is often different from what is best for doing other work on a computer.

The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem. Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page. Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

you can reset the input source to Spanish by selecting the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, selecting the Input Sources tab, and pressing the “+” button in the lower-left corner to select one of the Spanish input sources. The “Spanish – ISO” input source is most similar to the physical Spanish keyboard layout.

I bought my wife a new MacBook Pro, in setting it up for her, I took her Time Machine external drive to migrate onto the new machine but her old MBP not only was on 10.6, it was my old machine which I was still Administrator for.
i plugged in the external drive to start the migration process after entering her name and username from the old machine which gave me the options on transferring the old data over.
I also unchecked the Administrative end that had my info hoping that ONLY her data, files, etc., would be the ones sent over to her new machine which I wanted her to be the ONLY Administrator for. All went like clockwork until the restart.
Normally the screen should show the username and only need the password but both entries were blank, as in ‘Other’ sign in option available only. I entered her name and password, nothing….used her username and password, nothing. Used my old Administrator name and password, NOTHING!
I tried defaulting to factory settings from the Restore feature but it directs me to notify Apple. I tried in Terminal to change the password, nothing. I tried to boot from MY external drive and it doesn’t recognize it. I tried to even use my external drive which actually has the Mavericks upgrade, nothing!
Basically I can only get the startup screen which isn’t accepting the username/password or the Restore feature which doesn’t offer any options helpful!
Please, how do I start from scratch and start over here? Or simply change the Administrator name and password so I can proceed with everything thats already on there? I wish I could even boot from another drive but no luck on anything!

First, on the old machine, make your wife's account an admin one. Log into it and delete yours. Then, update the TM backup. Finally, use Internet recovery mode, ⌘⌥R, erase the HD, and restore the OS. One first boot, follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

New 17" MacBook Pro Brightness always changing

Just got a brand new MacBook Pro. Like it but the screen brightness keeps changing and its driving me nuts! Often the lights on the back lit keyboard come on and off, for apparently no rhyme or reason. Crazy. Anyone know what's going on? Or how to turn off auto-brightness, or lower its' sensitivity to light changes? This is ridiculous.

hummm....even after turn the "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes" the lights that backlight my keyboard continue to blink often!! Often several times in a row....on/off/on/off!
It appears the keyboard back lighting is controlled separately from the screen, as I suppose it might be.
Ahhh......yes in the Keyboard control panel you can turn off "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions"....and manually set the back lighting with the F5 and F6 keys. Ok, new stuff to learn about that was not on my old PowerBooks

Macbook Pro Brightness Fluctuating

I am experiencing an odd display issue with my Macbook Pro 13" mid-2010 model. The display, at random intervals, fluctuates from full brightness to quite dim... and sometimes to off and then back on a few seconds later.
It is not the ambient light sensor, as that is turned off. This happens, too, when the computer is plugged into AC power. I have noticed that the brightness controls do not work, but I don't know if that is related or not.
It appears to be software related, because the display often returns to normal after moving the mouse cursor. I have set all "power saving" options to off and this issue remains.
Any ideas?

Unless you have a lot of bus-powered peripheral devices plugged in and run extremely processor-intensive software, it's very unlikely that your 60W AC adapter was inadequately powering your computer and causing the screen brightness to fluctuate. Absent an extremely high power demand, the likelihood is good that your 60W adapter was faulty or damaged, and another 60W adapter in good condition might have eliminated the problem just as effectively. But I'm glad to hear you're back to normal now in any event.

Macbook Pro - Brightness

On my laptop I can not adjust the screen brightness and when I try to change it manually I get the following result.

I have 'nvidia-bl' installed and configured however I think the issue is that I cannot modify the brightness setting itself. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply but I have tried the suggestions with no success. When I try to manually change the brightness or fan speed for that matter I get the same message as the original post (cmp-daemon fails to load). It's like the system is denied access to these components. I should mention that the model is a Macbook Pro 6,1.

Macbook pro brightness problem

my macbook pro contantly change brightness after turning off and on the computer. even though i uncheck "automatically adjust brightness" in System preferences-Display, it still changes after turning off and on the computer. anybody else having the same problem, any advice?

When i move my hand towards the build in camera nothing changes, the brightness remains the same, its only when i turn my computer off and on it happens. When i turn off the electricity and run my mac on battery only nothing happens, brightness remains the same.
It seems like every time i turn my computer on it automatically adjust to the light in the room, but only at the time when the computer is turned on, not at any other time.
how I discovered this was by watching the bar in "system preferences - displays". I repeat that i have unchecked the box "automatically adjust brightness".

Macbook Pro date setting problem

I have a macbook pro running 10.6. Today, twice, the computer told me that my date and time were set to 2008. I was able to reset it, but I'm afraid it ill do it again. What would cause it to suddenly lose the date and time settings? And what should I do about it?

I would try that and run the benchmark test again...

Macbook Pro Brightness Controls Not Working

Ok, this is really weird. I have a Macbook Pro and after installing the new aluminum keyboard with the Keyboard 1.2 update my brightness controls in OSX no longer work. The weird part is if I go into Windows via Boot Camp my brightness controls (F1,F2) work fine. In Display Properties in OSX there is no brightness slider.
Can anyone help? Thank you.

Hey, thanks for the tip Neil. I was trying to figure out why my computer would dim and then get brighter. It would keep changing after every little thing i'd do. Honestly, it was freakin annoying.

Macbook Pro Initial set-up

I just started to use my dad's old macbook pro, and everything is set-up under his name. He got a new imac and set up his mail in imac and it showed on the macbook pro. I was wondering if this is because of the initial set-up, and how I can change it. THANKS!

It sounds like the MBP is still set up for your dad. There are a couple of choices.
One choice would be to go to >System Preferences>Accounts and create a new account with administrative privileges for you. Then you just log into your account from then on and ignore his account. Once your dad has everything he wants from the machine, he could simply delete his account.
Another choice would be to do an erase and install and set up the machine fresh for you. You would only want to do this if your dad has everything he wants removed from the machine and is willing to have the hard drive erased. You will need to have all of your software discs available for this option.
The second option is more trouble, but you will end up with a fresh installation of all of the software, which you will need to update, and it will truly be your machine from then on.

Plugged iPad into Macbook Pro - initial set up

Just got an iPad 4 a few days ago and liking it.
Today I plugged into my macbook pro, wanting to transfer some music over, and it asks me whether I want to either restore from a backup (only my phone backups are there or set up as a new ipad. I don't want to do either! I already set up as a new device when I got it and I've done a bunch of work on the ipad already that I don't want to lose.

iTunes sees your iPad as a foreign device because you set your iPad up without using iTunes and haven't synced yet.
However, you do have a couple of options to accomplish what you want to do. If you just want to move some music to the iPad, you can turn off auto sync and manually manage the songs.

I'm new to macbook pro and wondering if i need to download microsoft word/excel or is there an equal application already installed in my laptop but i just can't find it? and if i have to download microsoft, do i need to download antivirus software as well? If you have a need for MS Office, there is a Mac version for download. Just google the website. Microsoft gives you a 30-day trial period, after which you can decide if you want to purchase or not.
iWork is one alternative to MS Office. OpenOffice and NeoOffice are free office suites that run on the Mac.
No, you don't need antivirus software for OSX.
The is a wealth on information on Apple's website for new Mac users. I suggest you view some of the video tutorials and come back if you have more questions.

Macbook pro. Setting the 4k resolution

You know I just changed the resolution on my macbook to get more space. I expected to get 1920 x 1200 resolution but right now my mac says I have 3840 x 2400. So is it just an erorr or I really have 4k display now?
